REVIEW: Johnny Depp Channels an Urbane, Dissolute Hunter S. Thompson in The Rum Diary

After years of watching Johnny Depp give performances from behind thick rings of pirate eyeliner or masks of outlandish Tim Burton makeup, it’s a relief to see him, more and more often these days, acting with nothing but his real face. In Bruce Robinson’s The Rum Diary — liberally adapted from Hunter S. Thompson’s novel — Depp plays a wayfaring, hard-drinking journalist, Paul Kemp, who has drifted to Puerto Rico, circa 1960, where he lands a job at a floundering, two-bit newspaper, The San Juan Star . Its editor, played by a cigar-chomping Richard Jenkins, hires him reluctantly; never mind that he was the only person who applied for the job.

In Honor of Anonymous, 5 Reimaginings of Shakespearean Classics with Today’s Auteurs

This week’s new feature Anonymous is alluring for two reasons: It explores the possibility that Shakespeare didn’t write his masterworks, and it looks unintentionally hilarious. If I could dress up for Halloween as Vanessa Redgrave’s line-reading of “None of your plays will ever carry your name,” I would. In tribute to this dubious drama, let’s explore what the Bard’s plays would sound like if they were written or retooled by current auteurs. Ready for Why Did I Get Jealous Too ?

James Franco loves his little stunts , and this one’s an Evel Knievel-grade spectacle: On the new issue of L.A.’ s Flaunt magazine, Franco graces two different covers — one where he’s staring innocently from a school desk (boring), and another where his naked ass crowds the lens, boasts a tramp stamp, and looks like it’s about to speak. Need I say more? Click through for the cover.
