See Mark Wahlberg Return To a Life of Duct Tape-Assisted Crime in the Contraband Trailer

Did you guys realize that Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale were starring in a little heist movie called Contraband ? Me neither, but that’s probably because Universal has quietly scheduled the film, from Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur, for a quiet box office death release next January. But we’re going to need something to watch during that winter wasteland month so let’s take a look and see if super-angry Mark Wahlberg, his abs, and and Kate Beckinsale undressing for the camera can’t motivate us to buy tickets.

A Few Things About the First Trailer — and First Rumors — for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

This week’s edition of Oscar Index made the point of allowing for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close as an awards contender on paper, while withholding any specific hype until we’d all seen at least a trailer. Hours later, that trailer arrived. But even more interesting than the footage therein? How about the test-screening gossip trickling out around Stephen Daldry’s magic-realist 9/11 tearjerker? [Warning: Spoilers ahead.]

Is Faith-Based Courageous Shaping Up to Be the Sleeper Hit of the Fall?

Here we go again: Almost three years to the day after Sherwood Pictures — the filmmaking enterprise of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga. — uncorked its self-funded Christian drama Fireproof to a shocking $6.8 million opening weekend, along comes the church’s faith-based follow-up Courageous . And while no one should necessarily be surprised to hear that the film’s early box-office estimates are strong, its potential hardly ceases to amaze.

REVIEW: Anna Faris Draws the Short Straw in What’s Your Number?

There are hundreds of reasons we should welcome the new trend of movies featuring women who aren’t afraid to admit they enjoy sex and who use language that isn’t always granny-approved. In theory, the Georgia O’K eefe-like flowering of the genre should speak of a newfound freedom in how we think and talk about women’s sexuality. There’s just one problem: The movies are crap.

VIDEO: Stephen King Reads from His Vampires vs. Psychic Sequel to The Shining

Accepting an award last weekend at George Mason University, novelist Stephen King treated the audience to a reading of a passage from Dr. Sleep , his still-in-progress follow-up to The Shining . Remember little Danny Torrance, running from his deranged father (Jack Nicholson) in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film version? Well, Danny’s all grown up now, using his gift to help people die peacefully. And there are vampires, because why not?

Roman Polanksi Finally Picks Up Lifetime Achievement Award in Zurich

Love him or loathe him, Roman Polanski has officially, finally been recognized by the Zurich Film Festival. His acceptance of the fest’s Lifetime Achievement Award comes two years after his previous attempt, when authorities arrested the notorious U.S. fugitive upon arrival at the airport. Thus commenced a 10-month culture-war odyssey that found Polanski in and out of jail while lawyers, commentators, detractors and defenders alike shouted over each other for what seemed like ages. Technically some of them still shout, but Polanski himself may have had the last word in Zurich.

Bad Movies We Love: Halloween H20

Since Joseph Gordon-Levitt is titillating you with cancer this week in 50/50 and Josh Hartnett is storming the art-house circuit with Bunraku , we have no choice but to revisit their joint alma mater, the hallowed halls of Halloween H20 . It’s not the best Halloween movie, and it’s certainly not the worst, but as October dawns and the season of the witch descends, we’re due for a fright — and Halloween H20 delivers. It’ll loosen the Activia from your trembling constitution.

Thought Jack and Jill’s U.S. Poster Was Scary? Check Out Argentina’s

Let’s not belabor this: However Adam Sandler’s forthcoming dual-role family comedy Jack and Jill turns out, there is no denying that its marketing campaign is deeply , profoundly disturbing. Like, nightmare fuel. Unbelievably misguided, lazy, slapped-together and unsightly. And really, that’s not even counting the American marketing at this point.
