Coen Brothers Folk Music Movie Gets Co-Financing, Title

Remember that folk music movie Joel and Ethan Coen were working on back in June? It has co-financing and a title. Variety reports that StudioCanal will co-finance the film, now titled Inside Llewyn Davis , with Scott Rudin set to produce. The film — which will reportedly feature “live music” — is inspired, in part, by the life of famed musician Dave Van Ronk, an important figure in the growth of the folk music scene in New York’s Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Don’t Be A-Freud of The Dark: Watch the Trailer for A Dangerous Method

It’s not often that I’m intrigued, bothered, titillated, confused, and exhilarated after watching a trailer, but A Dangerous Method does the trick. In the new preview for the dazzling Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender Freud drama, we watch as Knightley begs to be beaten (not sexy), Fassbender reinvents Talented Mr. Ripley sailboat glamor (sexy), and Freud (Viggo Mortensen) drops in for some insight (id-tickling sexy)!

Josh Hartnett, Gackt, and More Navigate the Hyper-Stylized Samurai Wild West in Fantasy Mash-Up Bunraku

A hyper-stylized, genre-mashing fantasy actioner involving cowboys, samurai, and an axe-wielding Ron Perlman with dreadlocks isn’t exactly what you might have imagined in a film with a title like Bunraku , named for an obscure, 300-year-old form of Japanese puppet theater rarely performed these days. But that’s the film director Guy Moshe made — starring Josh Hartnett , Demi Moore , Woody Harrelson ( Indecent Proposal reunion!), and Kevin McKidd as a dapper, Fred Astaire-like cold-blooded killer, no less — and you’ve got to give him credit for his ballsy vision.

5 Oscar-Worthy Female Roles This Fall and Their Place in Academy History

Though the Oscars aired just six months ago, we’re already gearing up for next year’s decadent — perhaps Gervais-aided — ceremony. In scanning the release list for this fall, Movieline picked out five female roles that are shoo-ins for Academy attention. How can we be so sure, you ask? Because every role is a combination of past nominees and winners. Let’s divvy up the gold!

Lady Bus Driver Files Charges Against Matthew Fox Following Altercation

An update in the curious saga of that one time Matthew Fox allegedly got too drunk while in Cleveland (where he’s filming I, Alex Cross with Tyler Perry ) and punched a party bus driver in the… well, he allegedly punched her in multiple parts of the body. Let’s leave it at that. The 29-year-old woman has now officially filed assault charges against the actor, who was not arrested by police following the Sunday night incident. (Incidentally, Fox plays a mob killer opposite Perry’s titular hero in Alex Cross .) Developing… [ CNN ]

Ryan Reynolds and Willem Dafoe Do Tree of Life-Lite in Delayed Fireflies in the Garden

If Sean Penn didn’t love the abstract narrative Terrence Malick employed in Tree of Life , maybe he’ll dig the pretty-similar, much more conventional stuff in the long-delayed Fireflies in the Garden — a Tree of Life Lite starring Ryan Reynolds as a middle-aged man who returns to his Texas childhood home to deal with his strained relationship with his stern father (Willem Dafoe). Period flashbacks, memories of an angelic mother (Julia Roberts), and a pivotal death that inspires exploration into deep emotional scars? The only things missing are the cosmic clouds of particles laden with meaning. Would Penn approve?
