In television news nearly as shocking as The Walking Dead receiving a fifth season pick-up, ITV has announced Season 5 is a go for Downton Abbey. The British sensation is currently airing Season 4 in The UK and will premiere those new episodes on PBS on January 5 at 9/8c. Season 5, meanwhile, will air overseas in the fall of 2014 and not until early 2015 on American airwaves. Still… tea and crumpets for all! This is exciting news.

The Blacklist: Renewed for Season 2!

The Blacklist has received a green light. Following just two episodes – and an average of 12 million viewers per week – the NBC drama has been renewed for a second season. Said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke of the James Spader-anchored drama: “The many layers of Red Reddington and his mysterious reasons for getting into bed with the FBI seem to be fascinating to fans of this show. With great talent like James Spader and Megan Boone on board, as well our stellar executive producers and the whole cast and crew, we believe this outstanding series will continue to make NBC a big destination on Monday nights.” Among other TV pick-ups and renewals this week: Lucky 7 has been canceled. The Simpsons has been picked up for Season 26. Sleepy Hollow has been renewed for Season 2.

Breaking Bad Recap: "Granite State"

Breaking Bad took viewers to New Hampshire this week – and it also showcased a new side to Walter White. He’s emaciated, he’s no longer in control and, for the first time in ages, he’s simply… defeated. Breaking Bad Rundown: “Granite State” Yes, in the wake of the craziest episode ever, AMC aired one of the quietest, as fans spent a lot of time with a Walter White we hardly recognized. The pork pie hat? Nothing but wall decoration. The money meant to represent his one-time fortune? Used as a bribe for mere companionship. The bald head? The menacing goatee? Gone and gone. Walt is far past the point of redemption – a point driven home in heartbreaking style when we witnessed Andrea being executed, the latest victim in Heisenberg’s wake – but this episode’s story and Bryan Cranston’s acting still made you feel something for the man who truly duped himself into believing he’s been acting this whole time in the best interests of his family. That same family which is now broke and which now just wants him to die. If last week’s knife fight kept viewers on the edge of their seats, this week’s phone call between father and son tied our stomach in knots. It was gripping and emotional and heartbreaking and seemingly enough to inspire Walt to turn himself in. That is, until Gretchen and Elliott showed up on Charlie Rose and toyed with Walt’s ego once again. If you don’t want to make The Incredible Hulk angry, you don’t want to make The Incredible Meth Maker a sidenote. He’s The One Who Knocks, not The One You Casually Dismiss as Unimportant to Your Million-Dollar Company. And now he’s The One With a Machine Gun and Ricin. The former to rescue Jesse and the latter for himself? Is that how this tale will end? We’ll find out on next Sunday’s finale. But you tell us: Is that how you want Breaking Bad to conclude? Do you want Walter White to die?   Yes, he clearly deserves to No, he should live happily ever after Only if Jesse kills him View Poll » Breaking Bad Series Finale Promo

Jayma Mays Confirms Impending Departure from Glee

It may pale in comparison to the drama surrounding Glee these days in the wake of Cory Monteith’s death, but Jayma Mays has confirmed in a new interview: She will exit the series at the conclusion of Glee Season 5 . “This is going to be my last season,” the actress told Access Hollywood on the red carpet of this weekend’s Smurfs 2 premiere in Hollywood. Mays’ Emma Pillsbury got married on the May finale, but the star said she isn’t sure just how she’ll be written out or how the series will handle Emma’s relationship with Will. Mark Salling, Heather Morris, Amber Riley and Harry Shum Jr. have all been demoted as Glee regulars, while Adam Lambert will play an unknown role on the musical comedy this fall. Mays did acknowledge that she would “love” to return as a guest star someday, but Ryan Murphy have far weightier issues on their minds right now: They are writing the tribute episode for Monteith and to his character of Finn, who will be killed off in some way off screen on Season 5.

Johnny Depp: Ready to Retire?

Despite  The Lone Ranger  dying an absolutely spectacular death here in the United States, Johnny Depp and company are currently overseas doing publicity for the film, which has enjoyed a staggered international opening. The film premieres in the UK on August 9 and this weekend Johnny Depp sat down and talked with the BBC, revealing a major tidbit in the process: He may soon call it quits. In the discussion, Depp makes mention of looking forward to doing “quieter things” rather than making movies. “I wouldn’t say that I’m dropping out any second, but I would say it’s probably not too far away,” Depp said , adding: “At a certain point, you start thinking, and when you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year, for example, and you realize that you’ve said written words more than you’ve actually had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking of that as a kind of insane option for a human being.” Far be it for me to say when someone should retire, but you’d have to imagine that Disney, with whom Depp recently signed a multi-year first look deal , has to be giving this the side-eye. Not only is he confirmed for Pirates of the Caribbean   5 , but was also recently in talks for an  Alice in Wonderland sequel as well. Depp might be looking at retirement, but logistics wise, he’ll be looking at it for a long while yet.

David Kernell, Sarah Palin Email Hacker, Finally Out of Prison, Off Probation

David Kernell, the former college student who hacked Sarah Palin’s email in 2008 looking for politically damaging information, is FINALLY off probation. Kernell’s prison term ended in November 2011, and a judge has now ended his post-prison probation, The Commercial Appeal of Memphis, Tenn., reports. He was scheduled to remain on probation until late 2014, but Judge Thomas Phillips agreed to Kernell’s request to end his probation early. As NBC affiliate WBIR notes, Kernell’s attorney Wade Davis continues to argue, five years later, that his client only committed a youthful prank. When he did hack Palin’s email, the young man was a student at the University of Tennessee. He did complete his degree after he was out of prison. Phillips didn’t want to send Kernell to prison in the first place. In fact, he had ordered the college student to report to a halfway house in Knoxville. However, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons overruled Thomas and instead sent the 22-year-old prankster straight to the slammer for his cyber “crime.”

Ryan Braun Suspended by Major League Baseball, Admits to Performance Enhancing Drug Use

Ryan Braun, the 2011 MVP of the National League, has been suspended without pay for the duration of the 2013 season as a result of failing the sport’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Braun did not contest the suspension and admitted to taking performance enhancing drugs in a statement. “As I have acknowledged in the past, I am not perfect,” Braun said in the statement. “I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions. This situation has taken a toll on me and my entire family, and it is has been a distraction to my teammates and the Brewers organization.” He continued: “I am very grateful for the support I have received from players, ownership and the fans in Milwaukee and around the country. “Finally, I wish to apologize to anyone I may have disappointed — all of the baseball fans especially those in Milwaukee, the great Brewers organization, and my teammates. I am glad to have this matter behind me once and for all, and I cannot wait to get back to the game I love.” Braun – along with Alex Rodriguez and about a dozen other players – has been linked to Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic in Florida with ties to PEDs. He also tested positive for elevated testosterone levels in 2012, but successfully got his suspension overturned at that time due to a “chain of command issue.” “I am deeply gratified to see Ryan taking this bold step,” MLBPA association executive director Michael Weiner said in a statement. “It vindicates the rights of all players under the Joint Drug Program. It is good for the game that Ryan will return soon to continue his great work both on and off the field.”
