Channing Tatum, Serious Actor: The Outlook For America’s Most Ambitious Beefcake

He may look like an impossibly chiseled slab of flesh – and, well, he is – but this past weekend Channing Tatum proved to America (and that foreign country called Hollywood) that he is capable of much more. With Magic Mike wildly overperforming at the box office to the tune of $39 million, it’s time to acknowledge that this one-time piece of eye-meat has opened the door to a new chapter in his career. It’s widely known that it was Tatum who approached auteur Steven Soderbergh with the idea for Magic Mike , as the film was inspired by Tatum’s own experiences as a male stripper when he was 18. For as long as he’s been entertaining audiences, Tatum has been seen primarily as nothing more than an object, but his aspirations are clearly to have a career that involves some brains, too. Below, we take a look at where one of the most buzzworthy actors in the world is headed, by way of his upcoming films. The Bitter Pill Tatum will appear opposite Rooney Mara in his next feature, which is apparently Soderbergh’s penultimate flick. The film stars Mara as a woman caught in a love triangle between her husband (Tatum), who has recently gotten out of prison, and her doctor, played by Jude Law. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vinessa Shaw round out the cast. The film is billed as a “psychopharmacological thriller,” so whatever that means, expect a dark, gritty, intellectual tone, somewhere between Soderbergh’s last two pics: Contagion and Haywire (which also featured Tatum). This is clearly a film that should enable Tatum to show off some acting chops once again, and going up against a natural talent like Mara is sure to bring out the best in him. G.I. Joe: Retaliation Well, the guy’s got to put bread on the table, too. The last G.I. Joe film was woefully received by critics, but it made $300 million worldwide, enough to cover its $175 million budget (although with P&A expenditures and how revenue is divided, it’s unlikely Paramount made real money on it). In any event, this is the side of Tatum we’ve come to expect to see – but how much longer he’ll work these roles remains in question. Clinging on to action films for as long as possible is certainly a plausible route, but as the careers of co-star Bruce Willis or, say, Harrison Ford indicate, it’s not always the wisest one. Foxcatcher This is a great example of the type of highbrow fare Tatum has had trouble breaking into (until now). A long-gestating project for Moneyball helmer Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher is based on the true story of an eccentric, schizophrenic millionaire who would up building an enormous wrestling facility on his property – and then killing a US Olympic team wrestler. Mark Ruffalo will play the wrestler, Tatum will play his brother, and Steve Carrell has been cast as the schizophrenic. It’s obviously not the lead role, but visibility in a project like this – which could even be up for awards consideration – is a step in the right direction for Tatum’s serious side. White House Down This, like G.I. Joe , is basically standard genre fare, albeit with a little more prestige: Tatum will play a Secret Service agent tasked with protecting the President (rumor has it Jamie Foxx will play the commander-in-chief) from an imminent terrorist threat. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also on board. The film will be going head-to-head next year with a similarly themed project titled Olympus Has Fallen , starring Gerard Butler. (Now that’s a guy who needs a career makeover!) Jupiter Ascending The Wachowskis’ follow-up to the hotly anticipated Cloud Atlas adaptation will be an original film whose concept makes Cloud Atlas seem simplistic. (If you haven’t read Cloud Atlas , get thee to a bookstore!) The idea, in a nutshell, is that the film takes place in a world where DNA is the most highly prized commodity, and different strains of DNA enable humans to achieve different goals. One woman (Mila Kunis) has a perfect genetic code – too perfect! – and so bounty hunter Channing Tatum is dispatched to, well, dispatch of her. Unfortunately for the powers that be, they fall in love. Whether they succeed or fail, the Wachowskis always aim big, and this film has the potential to be a huge crowd-pleaser in the realm of Blade Runner or, of course, The Matrix . Lego: The Piece of Resistance Tatum will voice Superman in this animated film from Phil Lord and Chris Miller , who directed him in 21 Jump Street , another recent profile-booster that showcased Tatum’s talents. Tatum hasn’t done an animated film yet, so this is a smart expansion of what he’s capable of from a business standpoint, as well as with regard to his personal brand; being able to appeal to kids helps soften him out from getting typecast as the guy in the action movies. Plus: It’s Channing Tatum as Superman – LEGO Superman, but still. The Contortionist’s Handbook This adaptation of a 2002 novel has been in development since 2010, but Tatum (who is also a co-producer) is still looking to get it made. Tatum would star as a forger and con artist who is constantly creating new identities in order to evade the law. There’s no director attached, so it’s tough to say which direction the adaptation might head in, but the novel was released to acclaim upon publication, and it sounds like it might turn into a passion project for Tatum. Cast your own predictions for Channing Tatum’s post- Magic Mike output below. Zachary Wigon is a writer based in New York. Prison To Primetime? Casey Anthony Says She’s Inspired By Kim Kardashian And Wants To Be A Reality TV Star!

Ho sitcho azz down!!! Not happy with just trying to seal a book deal as well as not locked up in a cell somewhere, Casey Anthony has dreams of hitting the small screen and becoming a reality star. According to an article in People magazine, the former murder suspect has abruptly ended spiritual and grief counseling, focusing instead on rebuilding her life — and her image. “She loves being notorious,” revealed an insider. “One day she said, ‘I need to work on my brand,’ which is so strange for me and so foreign from what she should be doing. I said, Casey, what brand? You’re not selling anything. You’re a lost girl who got in a lot of trouble.’” When asked what her next move is going to be, Casey smiled slyly, said the source, and replied: “I am one of the most famous people in America. I’m on Saturday Night Live.” While she aspires to follow in the footsteps of reality queen Kim Kardashian, Anthony, 26, will not be asking for any tips from the Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s star as she is still extremely upset over tweets from her idol following last year’s verdict in her 2-year-old daughter Caylee’s death. Casey, you are not a celebrity! You are in the news because you are a thief that stole from your grandparents, parents, and friends and you are responsible for your child’s death. Rihanna’s Grandmother Dies of Cancer; Chris Brown Tweets Condolences

Chris Brown disses Drake on his new remix track following their nightclub brawl, but he’s still got nothing but love when it comes to ex-girlfriend Rihanna. Rih is dealing with the death of her beloved grandmother, Ciara “Dolly” Brathwaite, in recent days, and has posted touching tweets and photos of her. “Goodbye #grangranDOLLY get your beauty rest until I see you,” she wrote. Brathwaite died of cancer late last week, and in the wake of the passing of “Gran Gran Dolly”, Brown posted a nice Tweet about Rihanna’s grandma. “Praying for family and the lost loved one. She was like my grandmother. Love you GRAN GRAN DOLLY! RIP,” said the 23-year-old R&B star. Brown’s mom, Joyce Hawkins, shared similar sentiments. “@rihanna ANGEL MAY GOD BE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IN YOUR TIME OF SORROW. LOVE YOU ANGEL,” Hawkins tweeted Saturday as well. Clearly, Brown was once close to the singer and her family. Of course, Rihanna unfollowed Chris awhile back so it’s unclear if she’s seen this. Maybe he can mention it at their next hotel rendezvous .

Meek Mill ‘Hollered’ At Chris Brown And Drake Following NYC Brawl

‘I don’t really be having those controversies like that, man. It’s just that the more hotter you get, they start talkin’,’ MC tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Meek Mill on “RapFix Live” Photo: More money, more problems; that’s the only conclusion that Meek Mill can come to when pondering why he has been the subject of so many rumors lately. After news broke of the June 14 New York City brawl between Drake’s and Chris Brown’s entourages, Meek’s name swirled in reports. From the start, the Maybach Music MC insisted that he had nothing to do with the incident that left a number of people injured. When he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (June 27), Meek continued to steer clear of the controversy. “I don’t really be having those controversies like that, man. It’s just that the more hotter you get, they start talkin’,” Mill said. Meek seemed to be taken aback by the amount of negative press he’s been receiving. In the weeks leading up to the infamous melee, many blog sites reported that Chris Brown, Drake and the Philadelphia MC were sending subliminal tweets to one another in a beef over Brown’s ex-girlfriend Rihanna. When all three ended up in the same club on June 14, a brawl definitely broke out, but the cause still remains unknown. It is widely speculated that the fight began over Rihanna, whom Drake and Meek had both been romantically linked to. The brawl has made headlines all over the world and the “I’ma Boss” spitter has noticed his name being dropped in media outlets that normally wouldn’t cover him. “People fight in the club every week, I just be there. The name’s gettin’ a little bigger, I guess they startin’ to mention me now,” he said, distancing himself from any of the drama. “I’ve never been mentioned on none of those blogs or none of those shows or whatever, but things must be goin’ well over there.” As far as his rumored Twitter beef with Brown, Meek warns fans not to believe everything they read. “Twitter don’t count in real life, I tweet anything,” he said. “I try not disrespect nobody on Twitter, no artists or anybody, period.” In an interview with XXL, Meek said that he didn’t see Chris or Drake throw a bottle, but he did tell “RapFix Live” that he reached out to both of the stars following the fracas. “I hollered at Chris Brown immediately, I talked to Drake immediately,” he said. “I don’t be on no negative vibes, man. … We blessed, we get money, we rich and leave it at that.” Related Videos ‘RapFix’ Gets ‘Made’ With Rick Ross And MMG Related Artists Meek Mill Chris Brown Drake

Chris Brown/ Drake Bar Brawl: Meek Mill Speaks Out

‘I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle, and I was there,’ MMG rapper tells XXL of last week’s club fight. By Nadeska Alexis Meek Mill Photo: Chris Brown’s and Drake’s reps have issued statements about the NYC brawl between their entourages last week, but so far, the only direct words from the artists themselves have been via Twitter. Brown and MMG rapper Meek Mill have both tweeted about the incident in the past few days, but now Meek is finally speaking up about what he saw in the club that night as he stood next to Drake. In an interview with XXL, Meek was asked if he threw a bottle during the melee, which left Chris Brown, his bodyguard and several club patrons wounded. “F— no,” the Philly rapper responded, adding that Drake and Brown didn’t either. “Chris and Drake, them two was there, but it’s other people that be around that take sh– to the next level,” he said. “Things just happen in the club. I seen girls in there throwing bottles, all types of sh–. All types of people. I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle, and I was there.” In the hours following the brawl, Meek’s brief tweets didn’t add any clarity to the situation. He began with the coy line, “It wasn’t me…. (shaggy voice) lol,” and later responded to messages from Roscoe Dash, who blasted him along with Drake and Brown for fighting. Meek snapped back, “You gotta chill b4 you b tweeting my name in some sh– i wasn’t even really in! Stay in ya lane!” Later in the day, Brown — who had already deleted his initial tweets and the photo of his injury, which he posted right after the brawl — sent a follow up message, writing, “Me and @MeekMill ain’t on that bullsh–. Real respect Real….” Although the statement seemed odd, right after reports that Meek had played a role in instigating the fight, Meek confirmed to XXL that things were all good between him and Brown. “What [Brown] tweeted was just that me and Meek Mill ain’t got no problem,” he said. “I talked to him immediately after that, on the phone afterwards, like immediately. There’s nothing there, this-that-and-the-third. Chris Brown be in clubs. He be around situations like this. Things get out of hand. That don’t mean it’s out of hand with me and him or whoever, not even him and Drake.” Drake made his first public appearance since the brawl at his Club Paradise Tour stop in New York on Saturday night, bringing Meek along with him, but he made no real statement on what went down last week. Instead, he told fans that he’d had a rough couple of days but was in a much better mood by the time he hit the stage. Details from that night are still being revealed. The nightclub where the incident took place was shuttered this weekend, and clubgoers present at the time are reporting injuries from the brawl . Related Artists Meek Mill Chris Brown Drake

Fifty Shades of Grey: Bret Easton Ellis Dream Casts Ryan Gosling, Lena Dunham

American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis made clear via Twitter who he’d pick as potential leads in Fifty Shades of Grey , the best-selling erotic drama by E. L. James that he claims he’s hoping to adapt for the big screen. If it ever comes to pass, Ryan Gosling and Girls creator/actress Lena Dunham are clear favorites — or so he insists. What would rumored potential director Angelina Jolie say? Reporting on Ellis’ Tweets — which should be taken with a sizable grain of salt, obviously — Orange UK noted that the Less Than Zero author speculated that Scarlett Johansson or Kristen Stewart would be the likely victors to play the novel’s Ana opposite a theoretical Gosling as Christian Grey. “I would love it if we lived in a world where [ Girls actress] Lena Dunham could be Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey but I don’t think we do,” Ellis wrote. “Hope E.L. James doesn’t think I’m being a prankster. I really want to adapt her novels for the screen. Christian Grey is a writer’s dream…” The novel’s Christian Grey is a wealthy man tormented by demons and a need for control who begins a BDSM affair with college grad, Ana. Ellis has additional thoughts on a director too, should the Jolie thing not work out — or is just an elaborate rumor — or both: “I think David Cronenberg is a great idea for directing Fifty Shades of Grey and we worked together on American Psycho in its initial phase.” He gave a shout out to his supporters and a nudge to the powers that, well.. “BEE”: “Thanks to everyone supporting BEE adapting Fifty Shades of Grey : the response has been huge and amazing. Hope E.L. James feels the same way.” [ @breteastonellis via Orange UK ]
