Hurricane Irene definitely blew big in coastal areas of North Carolina and Virginia — so big that nearly half a million homes have been left without electricity. Hurricane Irene so far has left about 438,000 utility customers without power in North Carolina and Virginia as line crews begin assessing storm damage, two of the region’s largest utilities said Saturday. Progress Energy Inc. reported around 250,000 customers without power concentrated in coastal North Carolina. Dominion Resources Inc. reported about 188,000 customers in northern North Carolina and southern Virginia without power. “We have begun feeling the effects, and there is more ahead,” said Karl Neddenien, a spokesman for Dominion. Utilities crews in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions such as Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. and Consolidated Edison Inc. are preparing as Hurricane Irene moves up the coast as a Category 1 storm carrying maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. Unfortunately the power outages have not been the least of the devastation. Three deaths have already been reported from North Carolina. One person died in a vehicle crash in Pitt County, a man was killed in Nash County after a branch fell on him. Emergency officials there said he was crushed to death outside his home by a large tree limb blown down during high winds from Irene. Another person died in Onslow County on Thursday of a heart attack, as he was trying to board up his home. Source

Despite what Hustler claims, there is no Rihanna sex tape , according to the singer and J. Cole. His lost cellphone contained the tape, Media Takeout reported. Not the case, they say. Justin Bieber announced Thursday (August 25) on Twitter that he’ll be releasing his first Christmas album later this year. “So it’s true…been in the studio doing something special for christmas. we are going to try and raise alot of money this year for charity!” the 17-year-old Canadian pop star tweeted . This will be Bieber’s second studio album, since his first release, My World, was technically an EP. Barring the release of Never Say Never — The Remixes, which featured the new single “Never Say Never,” this will be the first new music Bieber has released in more than a year. He didn’t share whether he will be collaborating with any other artists on his holiday record or when fans can expect it to hit stores. Bieber is no stranger to using his musical talents for charitable causes. In 2010, he took part in “We Are the World 25” alongside Miley Cryus, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. Bieber has supported charities like Give Back Hollywood, Jumpstart and Children’s Miracle Network in the past, though he did not specify which charity he would be donating the proceeds of his Christmas album to in his tweet. As the tweeting community continues to grow exponentially each year, the VMAs drive even more activity and trends. Last year, the second in which we used the VMA Twitter Tracker, there were approximately 2.3 million VMA-related tweets sent during the East and West Coast broadcasts. Looking back at what people were the big trends were that night provides a pretty accurate picture of the big show’s onstage spectacles. On average, Lady Gaga was the subject of 9,200 tweets per minute (which, for Gaga, was probably a barely noticeable bump). Her meat-purse holder, Cher, was also popular that night as the subject of 7,100 tweets per minute. She was followed by Eminem, with 5,000 tweets per minute, and Rihanna, who had 4,700 tweets per minute. Here are a few other interesting stats from 2010 VMAs trending topics. ‘Gossip, gossip,’ rapper J. Cole tweets, in response to Hustler’s claim it has the tape. But after adult entertainment company Hustler told Radar Online that it had obtained video of the “Man Down” singer and rapper J. Cole, both artists tweeted denials of the tape’s existence. “We don’t believe U, U need more people…AND of course an actual sextape! #slownewsday,” Rihanna posted on Wednesday night. Cole, who opened for Rihanna’s Loud tour , also used his Twitter to react to the report, writing early Thursday morning (August 25), “Gossip Gossip, n—a just stop it.” The denials came after a rep for Hustler delivered a statement to Radar , saying, “Hustler [is] in possession of the Rihanna and J. Cole tape. We have seen it and we do not know what we are going to do with it yet.” While Rihanna has spoken out against this latest controversy to befall her, some of those closest to her have opted to focus on other news. “@rihanna #Cheers is gonna go #1 for sure!
