Jessica Willis: My Father Toby Willis Molested Me Since I Was 3 Years Old

In 2016, The Willis Clan star Toby Willis was arrested for child-rape . It was immediately suspected that the deeply religious father of 12 homeschooled children had raped his own child . Jessica Willis, his oldest child, is speaking out about her father, who is thankfully serving a lengthy sentence in prison for the horrors that he perpetrated upon his family. Jessica, now 26 and married, is opening up for the first time about her father’s sexual and physical abuse. In a heartbreaking post to her website, Jessica Willis details her father’s abuse . “As far back as I can remember, I was sexually abused by my father.” She’s not exaggerating, either. “I figure I was around three years old in some of the earliest memories.” Horrifying. “Initially, I had no way to know that anything was wrong. When I did eventually come to realize the fact, I had no way to accurately express what was happening to me.” This is not uncommon at all in abuse victims. Many survivors also find it difficult to speak because they instinctively fear retaliation. “There followed immense shame, distrust and hurt throughout my childhood — even in the happy times. Thus ran the two parallel storylines that became my life.” Like countless children who endure abuse, she felt that what was happening was wrong, but did not fully question it. That changed when she was 9 and her mother asked her some questions about how her father acted, to which she responded by nodding her head. After that, she heard her mother raise her voice to her father for the first time. “I didn’t understand that my father simply denied any wrongdoing and became more secretive and dangerous from then on.” Pro-tip: if you suspect that your spouse is molesting or otherwise abusing your child, go to the police, not to your spouse. Things did not get better for Jessica from that point on. Over time, her father tightened his grip on his growing family. “Suffice  it to say my father controlled the family in every single area of life.” Even when they became reality stars, they were no safer than before. “Underneath the outward foundations of family, religion and homeschooling with an emphasis in the arts, there was a constant current of manipulation, domination, fear, and favor.” Like countless children who grow up under those circumstances, she could not conceive that her life could be different or better. “There was very little room inside the bubble of my world to imagine that there was any alternative.” Like countless abuse survivors, reflecting upon her childhood fills her with disgust. “Looking back now, it’s almost impossible to face the fact of what my life once used to be.” When you are living through trauma like this, your mind conjures up coping mechanisms that “help” you to adapt to the unspeakable. “Many things were normal for me that  should have never been met with anything other than outrage.” “The abuse  developed and ebbed at various intervals over the years and into puberty.” Over time, he seemed to lose some interest in sexually abusing her. “The most graphic sexual abuse faded off for me when I was around seventeen years old but many inappropriate actions and attentions continued.” She came to the grim realization that she was not his only victim. “I feel like I truly knew that certain other members of my family were being sexually abused and I felt they knew this about me too. Conversations were had, tears were cried and we questioned how to ‘deal’  with the ‘situation.'” She was almost 23 before something happened that caused the coping mechanisms that she had developed begin to break down. “I came into my hotel room that night to find  my mother and some of my sisters sitting on the bed crying with that look on their face I had seen so many times before.” Sometimes, it takes one event to shatter the denial. “The coldest, blackest pit opened up in my stomach because no words needed to be said for me to know something had happened.” Some survivors are haunted by needless guilt and the feeling that they failed to protect their younger siblings from suffering as they suffered. It is never their fault. “How was I here again? I could not stay in denial about my past because it obviously wasn’t staying in the past even though at times I had tried so hard to forgive and forget.” Part of what makes PTSD so difficult is the P — for post . Everything that you’ve been denying just to survive comes back to you. Even if you aren’t yet safe. “Things were not over. They had never been over. Sexual abuse was still happening.” Eventually, she wrote 14 pages of details of what her father had done to her. She showed it to her mother, who was outraged. “I had taken my first step towards speaking out, but I had shared my story with another victim trapped in the same prison as me.” Sadly, many children who are abused find that the only people who know are also victims. “My father lashed  out at both of us with whatever threats necessary to maintain his control and began consistently threatening my mom with the lives of the entire family.” Her father fits the profile of a potential family-annihilator very specifically. When they fear losing control, they can turn turn a house of horrors into a house of hostages. “My father sought to stamp out my rebellion and became increasingly violent towards me even in front of the family.” It was this abuse, from assaulting her in front of the family on a tour bus to beating her with a belt, that made her realize that his threats of violence if she tried to leave were no longer effective. Just before her 24th birthday, she finally made her escape. “Around  4 months after I left, another friend stepped forward to save the rest  of my family. He reported my father for suspicion of sexual abuse and  the official investigation started. The case was given to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.” And yes, she helped. “When they contacted me, I went in and ended up speaking with them the whole rest of that day.” She had an entire lifetime’s worth of unspeakable trauma to share. And that was just about what had happened to her . “I was able to give them a long and confident testimony which was eventually used to create the arrest warrant.” Her father was, of course, arrested. Given the limits of the US legal system, he was sentenced to 40 years, and he will be required to serve all of that time. Jessica is now married to the man who first helped her to come to terms with what had happened to her. She ends her post with a message of affirmation and hope. “If you too are a survivor, you are not alone.” View Slideshow: 21 Celebrities You Probably Want to Keep Away From Your Children

Becca Kufrin as The Bachelorette: First Promo Pic!

After getting her heart shattered into a gajillion pieces on national television, Becca Kufrin wants the world to know that she’s back. With vengeance. The scorned winner of The Bachelor Season 22,  Kufrin was dumped by Arie Luyendyk Jr. mere weeks after he proposed to her on the show’s emotional finale. It was a stunning and horrific development for the franchise, but fans at least had their concerns over Becca eased a little bit upon learning that she had been chosen as the next Bachelorette. Her journey to happiness (we really hope!) gets underway on May 28at 8/7c, with host Chris Harrison teasing Kufrin’s season on Twitter this week via her very first promotional photo. It features Becca in a beautiful gold gown, a red rose in hand… and a straightforward tagline plastered across the front. Let’s Do The Damn Thing . It’s pretty clear Kufrin is not messing around, isn’t it? This is a woman ready to find love on her terms for once, and she doesn’t plan on letting anyone stand in her way. The slogan seems to has become somewhat of a mantra for Kufrin, who actually used it when she was announced as the show’s lead back in March. “Words can’t express everything I’m feeling tonight, but I’m so beyond grateful for the love, support and well-wishes,” Kufrin wrote on Instagram alongside a slideshow of images from After the Final Rose. She then added: “I’m beyond excited for this next chapter of my journey and to have shared the start of that all with you tonight. “Now we’re doing the damn thing.” Yes you are, Becca. Kufrin handled her very public embarrassment about as well as anyone could possibly expect. She really only called out Arie one time, shortly after he tried to claim that he dumped her in front of ABC cameras specifically because he wanted to turn her into a sympathetic figure and, therefore, prompt the network to make her The Bachelorette. That was a crock of nonsense. “I don’t think he ever expected me to be [the Bachelorette], or how everything played out,” Becca said in response to this assertion. And that was basically it. Becca has had a chance to slam the living heck out of Arie and has constantly chosen to mostly take the high road. She isn’t looking for attention in this manner, a source recently told Entertainment Tonight. She’s really just looking for a loving husband. “She’s not one of those people who went on the show for Instagram followers,” the insider told this outlet, adding of the 28-year old Minnesota native: “She’s got a killer job, she’s a good person and she really wants to find somebody.” We sincerely hope she does. Based on a recent set of The Bachelorette spoilers , we have a clearer idea of who this somebody could be. And we also know he will come from the following pool of suitors. Professor Celebrates Death of "Racist" Barbara Bush

Former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away on Tuesday. She was 92. A Fresno State professor tweeted out some accusations about the First Lady, and more or less danced on her grave. The backlash was intense. The personal consequences may be more so. A lot of people indulge the impulse to express delight when a famous person dies. Often, they deserve it. But most people agree that Barbara Bush’s death does not need to be celebrated. Professor Randa Jarrar, however, is not most people. She tweeted: “Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist who, along with her husband, raised a war criminal. F–k outta here with your nice words.” She received thousands of replies and even spent a few hours debating people. She has since made her Twitter account private. Free speech does not mean freedom from consequences, however. She has since revealed: “Currently on leave from Fresno State. This is my private account and represents my opinions.” Fresno State, in the mean time, has put out a statement reading: “On behalf of Fresno State, I extend my deepest condolences to the Bush family on the loss of our former First Lady, Barbara Bush.” That’s an appropriate way to start. “We share the deep concerns expressed by others over the personal comments made today by Professor Randa Jarrar, a professor in the English Department at Fresno State.” They emphasize something that is very important, however. “Her statements were made as a private citizen, not as a representative of Fresno State.” That won’t prevent certain anti-education opportunists from trying to frame her as a typical “university elite” or whatever. “Professor Jarrar’s expressed personal views and commentary are obviously contrary to the core values of our University, which include respect and empathy for individuals with divergent points of view, and a sincere commitment to mutual understanding and progress.” It’s difficult to prove that Barbara Bush was or was not a racist, so let’s look at the other “accusation” leveled against her — regarding who one of her sons grew up to be. Was the US Invasion of Iraq perpetrated under pretenses that were later revealed to be false, deceiving the international community and the American public? Yes. Did the Bush Administration commit acts that many consider to be war crimes during that extended conflict and during the global “War on Terror,” including torturing enemy soldiers and also some people who were found to be innocent? Also yes. But while he may have had the literacy level of a child, George W. Bush was a grown man. Like, in his fifties. Also, he was the President of the United States. And while it’s unlikely that he’ll ever be held accountable — unless you believe in Hell — for the atrocities committed during his Presidency, that doesn’t mean that we shift the blame to his mom . What is important to remember about Barbara Bush is that she was widely considered to be George H. W. Bush’s better half. For example, she supported the Equal Rights Amendment and was vocally pro-choice, unlike most of the Republican establishment in recent decades. She avoided commenting on her political views during her husband’s candidacy out of fear that she would alienate his voter base. But even if she had not been as good as she was, she was never President herself, nor was she a monster. With that in mind, don’t her grandchildren and great-grandchildren deserve consideration? Say what you will about actual Presidents, but it seems unethical to express this kind of glee simply because you disliked her husband and son. Personally, I’m not an advocate for pretending that someone was better than they actually were just because they died. But I certainly don’t support pretending that they were worse , either. Celebrate the deaths of bad people if you want to, but don’t target their relatives in your zeal. Randa Jarrar exercised her right to free speech. But that right does not exempt her from consequences of her words, personally or professionally. Now … does it make sense for her to be placed on leave for that simple tweet (and the tweetstorm that followed)? It might. This doesn’t seem like something that should get her fired, however. She’s not advocating violence or a violent ideology anywhere that we’ve seen. It seems that she’s just being unkind on her own personal social media. Southwest Flight Makes Emergency Landing, Passengers Relay CRAZY Details

WARNING TO ALL READERS: You may not want to read the rest of this post if you ever want to fly in an airplane ever again… On Tuesday afternoon, a Southwest Airlines flight en route from LaGuardia Airport in New York to Dallas made an emergency landing in Philadelphia after one of the engines blew and a passenger got nearly sucked out of a window as a result. As confirmed by a map via FlightAware, Southwest Flight 1380 was headed west/southwest when it took a sharp turn east, back towards Philadelphia. Accounts from passengers on board have confirmed that an engine on the left side of the plane exploded mid-flight, causing shrapnel to fly across the aisle. Incredibly, only one person was injured from the blast and he/she was tended to by medical personnel aboard the aircraft. “We are aware that Southwest flight #1380 from New York La Guardia (LGA) to Dallas Love Field (DAL) has diverted to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL),” said Southwest in a statement, adding: “We are in the process of transporting Customers and Crew into the terminal. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, has 143 Customers and five Crewmembers onboard. “We are in the process of gathering more information. “Safety is always our top priority at Southwest Airlines, and we are working diligently to support our Customers and Crews at this time.” As news continues to break regarding exactly what happened, passengers have started to share photos from the plane on social media. For example, Kristopher Johnson snapped the picture below and shared it to Twitter, thanking the Southwest crew “for a great job getting us to the ground safely after losing in engine.” Marty Martinez, meanwhile, shared a Facebook live video that depicts him with an oxygen mask on. “Something is wrong with our plane! It appears we are going down! Emergency landing!!” he says in the footage. Martinez later talked to CBS News after the plane had landed in Philadelphia, explaining something went wrong about a half hour into the trip. “All of a sudden, we heard an explosion and I come to find out that the engine exploded on the left side of the plane,” he said. “That explosion caused one of the windows to explode in row 17 of the plane, which was just two aisles over from me.” Added Martinez: “I thought I was cataloging the last moments of my existence. It was absolutely terrifying.” Then there was Todd Baur, the father of one passenger onboard, who told NBC Philadelphia that a woman was nearly sucked out of the broken window. She “was partially … was drawn out towards the out of the plane” and “was pulled back in by other passengers,” Baur said, adding that she was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Philadelphia Airport has Tweeted that passengers should expect delays following an order (since lifted) from the Federal Aviation Administration that had been preventing flights en route to Philadelphia from taking off. Crazy, right? While this near-catastrophe might scare some folks away some flying, it may actually encourage others to feel even safer in the sky. After all… an engine actually blew up and the plane was still able to land safely, with no fatalities. Pretty amazing, no? UPDATE : The FAA has issued its statement on what happened to Southwest flight 1380. It reads as follows: Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 landed at Philadelphia International Airport this morning after the crew reported damage to one of the aircraft’s engines, as well as the fuselage and at least one window. The aircraft, which departed from New York LaGuardia Airport, diverted to Philadelphia, where it landed at 11:20 a.m. Eastern. Passengers exited the aircraft using air stairs. Please contact local emergency response officials for information on the condition of the passengers. The FAA is investigating the incident and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.

Six Fired At Howard University For Stealing $1M Of Financial Aid Money

As if HBCU’s didn’t have enough issues finding funds, six Howard University employees were fired last year for stealing $1 million in student financial aid. This revelation comes at particularly difficult time for the university, whose students have demanded changes at the historically Black institution. The university’s president, Wayne Frederick has been under fire for some time. Earlier this year, in the arctic blast that hit the East Coast, the university’s spring semester was delayed by damages from weather related burst pipes. And as you may remember, Howard has not been the only major HBCU with issues with their sitting president.  Morehouse’s president was ultimately ousted as students demanded changes at that HBCU as well. NBC News reports: Six Howard University employees were fired last year for “gross misconduct and neglect of duties” following an independent auditor’s investigation into misappropriation of financial aid funds, according to  a statement from the school’s president Wayne A.I. Frederick. The firings took place in September, 2017, and were made public Wednesday in Frederick’s statement. According to the statement, some university employees received two kinds of benefits when they were only supposed to receive one. One kind of benefit is tuition remission, which waives tuition costs for employees who are enrolled in university classes. The other benefit was a university grant. The two benefits together added up to more than the cost of attendance, which resulted in the employees receiving improper refunds. Frederick said he was first made aware of the problem in December, 2016. He later brought in an outside auditor to supplement the school’s internal investigation. Howard completed its internal investigation of “individual employee actions” in September, 2017, and said it would refer any actions for “criminal prosecution” when appropriate. The employees were not identified. The University is still working with outside experts to determine the total amount of misappropriated money during the nine-year span. The statement also lists a series of new policies and procedures as a direct result of the investigation’s findings, including the hiring of a new chief compliance officer. The announcement comes less than 24 hours after an anonymous post published on Medium alleged financial abuses at the University. NBC News was not able to independently verify the specific allegations made in the original Medium post. The post was removed from Medium Wednesday afternoon. Howard University officials tell NBC News the president’s statement Wednesday was not prompted by the Medium post. In a  radio interview  with HBCU Digest, Frederick said he was very “concerned” about the results of the investigation getting out because criminal charges against individuals involved are still a “possibility.” One of the employees accused,  made this statement via Twitter:   ABC News has received the following statement on behalf of Tyrone Hankerson Jr. pic.twitter.com/hIA8uaIlG3 — Anastasia (@AnastasiaElyseW) March 28, 2018 Tyrone Hankerson via Instagram The revelations of financial abuses comes at a particularly challenging time for the prominent HBCU and its president. Sunday night, HUResist, a student-led activist group at Howard,  posted a list of nine demands  ranging from better university housing accommodations to greater administration accountability. The group also called for Frederick’s “immediate resignation.” Last year, faculty leaders  voted  “no confidence” in Frederick — though the vote’s legitimacy has been questioned. In addition to voicing their concerns on the availability of university housing, Howard students  have been critical  of Frederick’s visit with the Trump administration and his handling of certain student matters. School officials tell NBC News the University plans to “exercise all options to recoup the funds” and that any money that is taken away from students is “unacceptable.” As could be expected, social media had a field day with Hankerson, one of the alleged embezzlers, to the point that “Tyrone” was a trending topic on Twitter.
