Taylor Lautner Talks ‘Breaking Dawn’ Split, 3-D Possibility

‘I definitely think it was the right thing to do, for the movie and for the book,’ Lautner tells MTV News of making two ‘Breaking Dawn’ films. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Lautner Photo: Charley Gallay/ Getty Images Once “Eclipse” hits theaters at midnight, there will only be one book left in “The Twilight Saga” to mine for the big screen. But thanks to Summit Entertainment’s decision to split “Breaking Dawn” into two films, fans can look forward to two more installments of their beloved franchise. It’s a decision that was universally embraced not just by fans of the series, but by several of the films’ stars as well — like Taylor Lautner , for instance. “I definitely think it was the right thing to do, for the movie and for the book,” Lautner told MTV News of the “Breaking Dawn” split. “It’s hard enough to condense 500 pages into a script, but to condense 800 and everything that’s going on in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ it would have been impossible.” Lautner will spend his summer shooting the lead role in the action/thriller “Abduction,” but he returns to the role of hunky werewolf Jacob Black when the cameras roll on “Breaking Dawn” in the fall. Already a veteran of the “Twilight” franchise, Lautner confessed that there are elements of “Breaking Dawn” that have him a bit on edge. “It’s the part I’m most looking forward to and the part I’m most nervous about: Renesmee, the baby,” he said, referring to the vampire baby spawned by Edward and Bella. Upon Renesmee’s birth, Jacob finds himself inexplicably drawn to the baby, effectively ending his feud with Edward over Bella’s heart. “That should be very interesting to film. But I’m looking forward to it! I’ve got the direction of Bill Condon , so I’ll be fine.” Speaking of Condon, Lautner said he’s already met the recently appointed “Breaking Dawn” director. “I met him briefly, very quickly, but not about ‘Breaking Dawn.’ He seems like a very nice guy,” the actor said. “Obviously, he’s ridiculously talented, so I’m excited that I’m getting to work with him twice.” As the shoot date on “Breaking Dawn” draws ever nearer, there are fewer and fewer questions about the film left to answer. One question that lingers, however, is whether it will be released in 3-D. “Usually, 3-D is best when it takes you into another world,” he explained. “I could see it going both ways. As long as we have the story line down and as long as we bring what was written on the pages in the book to life, then we’ll be fine no matter what we do.” Would you like to see “Breaking Dawn” in 3-D? Chris Brown’s BET Awards MJ Tribute Was ‘Spectacular,’ Jermaine Jackson Says

‘He deserves to perform, because it’s healing for him,’ Michael Jackson’s brother tells ‘Extra.’ By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown performs during the 2010 BET Awards on Sunday Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Chris Brown wasn’t the only one getting misty-eyed at Sunday night’s BET Awards during his tribute to Michael Jackson . The King of Pop’s older brother, Jermaine, told “Extra” that he was also overcome with emotion during the dance routine, in which Brown paid homage to some of MJ’s most famous moves and then attempted to sing “Man in the Mirror” before being overcome with emotion and weeping onstage. “To see [Chris’] performance, it was very emotional for me, because it was an acceptance from his fans from what has happened to him and also paying tribute to my brother,” Jermaine said. “It was just a spectacular moment.” Fans and critics have been split on the performance, which some saw as the bursting of an emotional dam for the singer, making his first major public appearance since he pleaded guilty to felony assault in his assault of former girlfriend Rihanna last June. Others speculated that Brown may have manufactured the tears to gain sympathy from fans who abandoned him in the wake of the Rihanna attack. Jermaine Jackson said he thought Brown — a longtime devotee of Michael’s and, at one point, considered a modern heir to the R&B throne — had every right to pay homage to his brother. “He deserves to perform, because it’s healing for him,” Jermaine said. “How can he learn from his mistakes if you don’t give him a chance? He needs that. I love Rihanna, and I’m not supporting what he did, but I support him [as a singer] 100 percent. … I’m just very emotional just knowing what has happened. Chris Brown is a human being, and we all make mistakes. We can’t condemn him for what has happened. We hope he has learned from it.” Brown hasn’t made any public statements since the BET performance, but on Monday, he did tweet , “My fans are my world,” a follow-up to a message earlier in the day when he wrote, “I Love you … (ever single one of #teambreezy).” What did you think of Chris Brown’s emotional performance? ‘Eclipse’ Werewolves: Five Secrets Revealed

Visual-effects master Phil Tippett tells MTV News how he remade Jacob Black and the wolf pack into primordial animals for third installment. By Eric Ditzian Photo: Summit You’ve met Jacob Black and his pack of werewolves before, but you’ve never seen them like this. Fans were first introduced to the hirsute shape-shifters last November in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” but when director David Slade took over directing duties from Chris Weitz on “Eclipse,” he brought with him a new vision for the wolves. And it was up to visual effects legend Phil Tippett — his studio engineered a dizzying array of hits, including “Cloverfield,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Men in Black II” — to translate Slade’s vision into computer-generated effects worthy of the big screen. With just hours to go until the midnight opening of “Eclipse,” Tippett called MTV News and gave us on a behind-the-scenes look at these cinematic wolves. The Wolves Have New Fur, Eyes And Behavior Weitz requested wolves that had more of a rangy look to them, with matted fur and eyes that more closely resembled human eyes than wolf ones. By contrast, Slade wanted his wolves just a bit more, well, coifed. “They weren’t supposed to look like poodles, but [Slade] wanted them a lot sleeker looking and with shinier, shimmering coats,” Tippett explained. Slade was also adamant that the “Eclipse” wolves revert to the wolf eyes you might see in nature. But it wasn’t just the wolf pack’s physical attributes that got a makeover for the third installment. Tippett and his team were also directed to adjust the wolves’ overall behavior. “The ‘New Moon’ wolves, we played them as heroic sentries,” said Tippett. “When the wolves met the humans, we attempted to make it appear as though the wolves had a center of conscience that was definitely human. And David really wanted to play it that the wolves were far more primordial and much more wolf-like. The wolves became less sentries sent from God and a lot more twitchy, uncertain, fairer animals.” Perhaps the biggest similarity between both film’s wolves, however, is that neither set actually has genitals — a compromise necessary to secure a PG-13 rating. “We just deal with it by putting extra fur down there,” he laughed. Taylor’s Wolf Is Sad Tippett and his crew spent countless hours perfecting each member of the wolf pack, but obviously Taylor Lautner’s wolf receives the most screen time and thus required the closest attention. Specifically, they had to capture Jacob’s unrequited love for Bella while he was in wolf-form. “Through non-language pantomime on the wolf’s part, he had to appear to be engaged and try to make his expressions telegraph the tragic love that is their relationship,” Tippett said. “So there is a sad kind of a longing and protectiveness that we try to imbue him with.” To get the look right, crew members traveled up to a wolf preserve, and actually got into pens with the 200-pound animals and sketched out what they observed. “I’m a huge advocate of that. Anytime you can get close to an animal, that’s the closet model you can find,” he said. “And the animators are cast just like actors. Certain animators are really strong on action and there are animators that are really strong on the emotional moments. And the animators strong on emotion were the ones creating the emotional response of Jacob’s wolf.” The Vampires Fought With a Potato Since the wolves are entirely CGI creations, the actors are presented with a challenge: how to interact with — and often fight hand-to-paw against — imaginary beings. What’s more, they had to do all this in such a way that would allow Tippett and his animators to plug in their digital creations. The solution they hit upon was what came to be known as the “potato.” “We came up with this object that we called the potato,” Tippett said. “And the potato was roughly a very rudimentary wolf form that was kind of like a big pillow that matched the dimensions of the wolves without hair. And those would be set on location by the special-effects department, and they would rig these potatoes with wires so they would hang and we would be able to manipulate them in a way that we knew later on we would be able to match with the wolves in a realistic confrontation. Taylor Dressed Up In A Gray Leotard Alas, the potato wouldn’t always suffice. For one scene in which Jacob’s wolf nuzzles up against Bella, filmmakers required something just a bit more lifelike than a big pillow. “David was very insistent that Taylor actually perform with Kristen, and so he had the wardrobe department make up a grey leotard and a hoodie that Taylor wore, and he would kind of crouch down and try as best he could to fit that space where we knew later the wolf would be,” Tippett said. “And Taylor could remain in character and ensure that the performance was a performance based on contact between two performers, not just Kristen talking to a golf ball or something like that.” Fantasy Trumped Physics In the climatic fight scene, when the wolves take on a newborn army of vicious vampires, the effects team found itself in a conundrum: How could a 1,200-pound wolf and a 180-pound vampire get into a realistic fight? “We have to be true to Earth’s specific gravity in the performance work to make it seem like the wolves are really there,” Tippett said. “But if a 1,200-pound object is slamming into a human being at 30 miles an hour, it’s going to have pretty severe consequences. And so there are these scenes where it’s like, ‘Oh my God, how are we going to pull this off?’ ” Their solution was to sprinkle a hefty dose of magical realism into their physical calculations. “David’s justification for it was, ‘OK, the newborns are made out of some material that increases their mass and that they are closer to 500 pounds,” Tippett said. “The actors didn’t actually play it like that — I don’t think they ever told them that because they didn’t start walking around like the Hulk or anything — but what it did is gave us an excuse to be able to choreograph these things. So when a wolf runs and attacks and slams into one of the newborns at the tail end of the third act battle, we have a performance justification for how that works. That was actually planned out and made sense and didn’t look stupid.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Kristen Stewart Dishes On Her Real-Life ‘Wolf Pack’

‘They’re really sweet. I cook for them when they’re hungry,’ Stewart says of her pet wolf hybrids on ‘Late Show With David Letterman.’ By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart visits “The Late Show with David Letterman” on Monday Photo: James Devaney/ Getty Images Kristen Stewart visited the “Late Show With David Letterman” on Monday night to promote the latest “Twilight” film, “Eclipse,” opening Wednesday, and the conversation quickly turned to Stewart’s real-life wolf pack. You see, the actress actually owns wolf hybrids. While Letterman held up a photo of her pet wolf, Stewart explained, “This is my pet. This is Jack. He’s our oldest male. I know he looks kind of scary. He’s a wolf. He’s really sweet.” When asked where she got the wolf, Stewart replied, “[We got him] from Florida, actually. … They told us [he’s a wolf]. The dark ones are apparently European. They’re wolf dogs. They’re hybrids.” If you’re wondering how Stewart got the idea to have wolves in her home, it has nothing to do with “Twilight.” “It’s my mom’s deal. Maybe it’s a bit of empty-nest syndrome and she needed to raise more children, because they really are hard to take care of. She’s awesome. She’s just a little funny,” the actress explained. When a photo of Stewart cuddling with one of her wolves was shown, she added, “See, they’re really sweet. I cook for them when they’re hungry,” adding that it is legal to own wolf hybrids in the U.S. But the talk wasn’t all about Stewart’s wolves. Letterman asked about her “mixed” relationship with a vampire in the form of Robert Pattinson. “That’s very prejudiced Dave,” she joked. She then pointed out that the relationship won’t be “mixed” for much longer. In “Breaking Dawn,” she’ll become a vampire. “Well, I’m not spoiling it for anybody, Dave. I’m gonna make the transformation,” she said. When Dave asked who might “sponsor” that transformation, she joked, “I haven’t thought about that. Maybe ‘True Blood’ will sponsor us.” What do you think of Stewart owning actual wolves? Tell us in the comments! ‘Eclipse’ Director David Slade Reveals Kristen Stewart’s Deleted Scenes

‘There’s a lovely scene between Angela and Bella where they’re just two girls getting along,’ filmmaker says of possible ‘Eclipse’ DVD bonuses. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz David Slade Photo: MTV News Last November, “New Moon” director Chris Weitz told us that the DVD release of the second film in the “Twilight” franchise would deliver 20 minutes of deleted footage for hungry fans. But when the disc dropped in March, no such scenes were included on virtually any available version . Weitz eventually copped to the mistake, but “Twilight” fans might remain wary about promises of deleted scenes for the DVD of “Eclipse.” So approach director David Slade’s statements with both the usual enthusiasm and abundant caution, because he’s promised MTV News that the DVD will definitely contain deleted scenes — and at least two will feature Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan. “There’s a lovely scene between Angela and Bella where they’re just two girls getting along and they’re just talking about girl stuff, about jealousy,” said Slade of the two high school friends. “Bella’s so completely and utterly wrapped up in all of this stuff — that Angela has no idea about — [and Bella] is blind to the basic human stuff in front of her. It’s a lovely scene, and I’m sure it will be on the DVD. It just stopped the film dead. The film had a pace and it just stopped dead.” Indeed, there is very little in “Eclipse” of Bella in her high school setting: one or two scenes in the cafeteria, a brief graduation scene, and not much else. Rather, the movie focuses on the Bella-Edward-Jacob love triangle and the growing threat Victoria and her army of newborn vampires pose to the community. With a film that runs just over two hours, a director is simply forced to make tough choices. “It was one of those things we ended up reluctantly removing, but it will be there for later, for prosperity,” Slade said of the scene. Aside from Bella and Angela’s conversation, Slade admitted that not much was left on the cutting-room floor. “There’s not much fat,” he said. But there is a touching scene between Bella and her father that fans can get excited to see. “We did this one scene of Charlie just telling Bella how proud he is of her, which was wonderful and really touching,” Slade said. “But again, it just kind of stopped you.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Taylor Lautner’s ‘Abduction’ Co-Star Maria Bello Says Movie Is ‘Badass’

‘It’s an incredible script,’ the actress says. By Eric Ditzian Maria Bello Photo: MTV News Taylor Lautner has thrown himself into boxing and fight training in the last few months. He’s learning to work movie magic on a motorcycle. And he’s likely going to have to jump into a pool and figure out how to swim like an action hero . That’s just what it’s going to take to slip into his starring role in “Abduction,” a flick that’s being compared to the Jason Bourne films. And it’s a good thing he’s committed himself so fully, because as co-star Mario Bello told MTV News , the movie will be nothing short of hardcore. “It’s an incredible script. It really is,” she told us at the red-carpet premiere of “Grown Ups.” “John Singleton is directing. I’m so happy to be a part of it. It’s going to be a badass movie.” The story follows Lautner as a kid who, thanks to a visit to a missing-persons website, discovers that he has actually been abducted and the parents who raised him are not his flesh and blood. Jason Isaacs plays his faux-dad, while Bello is his faux-mom. “Do I look like Taylor’s mom?” she asked. Judging by the look she was rocking the red carpet — a form-fitting blue dress and short, sun-kissed blonde locks — Bello should have no problem convincing audiences that she could have birthed a good-looking kid like Lautner. “He is such a gorgeous guy,” she said. But, of course, in the film it turns out that she’s not his real mother. And when Lautner makes that discovery, he’s thrust into a run-and-gun-style thriller. Lautner himself has clearly been training hard for the requirements of “Abduction,” but what about Bello? Might we see her kick a little ass on the big screen? “You never know?” she said. “You’ll have to see the movie!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

‘Eclipse’ Premiere: Xavier Samuel Drew Inspiration From ‘Wild Things’

Australian actor thought about the Denise Richards movie when emerging from the water as Riley. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Xavier Samuels at the “Eclipse” premiere Thursday Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images In trailers and clips, fans have already been teased with what it will look like when Riley and the army of newborn vamps emerge from the water, on their way to the final battle in “Eclipse.” Australian up-and-comer Xavier Samuel , who plays Riley, new the image would be dramatic, and he had a very interesting movie reference in mind as he got into character for that particular scene. “Well, I’m lucky it was kind of covered the first night at drama school,” he joked to MTV News at the red-carpet premiere of “Eclipse” in Los Angeles on Thursday night. “Let me say a large source of inspiration for that scene was Denise Richards in ‘Wild Things.’ ” Of course, movie buffs may point out that when Richards and Neve Campbell rise out of the pool in the 1998 movie, they’re actually referencing a scene in “Apocalypse Now,” but if it worked for Samuel, we won’t argue with him. And with “Eclipse” set to open on Wednesday (June 30), he said he now has a game plan for his next big Hollywood move. ” ‘Wild Things 5,’ ” he laughed when asked about his next project. “And hopefully that will continue on for a while.” Samuel said that there are few things in this world that would get him as hyped as the fans who had lined up for days outside Hollywood’s Nokia Theatre to catch a glimpse of their favorite “Twilight Saga” stars for the premiere . “I was really into Australian football when I was younger,” he said. “But I wasn’t writing posters or anything like that, but I can understand the degree of hysteria.” So, did he get any marriage proposal from any of the aforementioned fans? “I’ve only had one,” he revealed. “Not [married] yet, but I just thought I’d say, ‘Look let’s get to know each other. We should meet first, perhaps.’ Absolutely [I’d date a fan].” What other movie references have you seen in the “Twilight” movies? Talk about it in the comments. ‘Twilight’ Actors Recall Interesting Fan Encounters At ‘Eclipse’ Premiere

‘She was so excited … that she vomited as soon as she saw me,’ Alex Meraz says of one fan. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Alex Meraz Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images With the level of enthusiasm Twi-hards have for the series, it’s no surprise that the “Twilight” franchise’s three main stars — Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — have had their fair share of unique fan encounters. However, when MTV News caught up with fellow “Twilight” players Justin Chon and Alex Meraz, we learned that the fan enthusiasm extends to embrace the entire family. Chon, who plays enthusiastic high schooler and Bella fan, Eric Yorkie, recounted a particularly interesting offer from one eager female admirer. “I had a lady offer me her keys to her cabin somewhere in the mountains,” Chon remembered. “And she said I could come anytime [I] wanted, just [to] let her know because she’ll meet me there.” So did Chon take her up on the cabin getaway? “No, no. I didn’t go,” he said. “I passed on that one.” Alex Meraz, who plays wolf pack member Paul, described a similar encounter — though his fan expressed her enthusiasm in an entirely different manner. “I was in Miami [and] a fan was camped out for three nights [to see me],” Meraz said. “She was so excited and dehydrated that she vomited as soon as she saw me.” To his credit, Meraz didn’t balk at the unique reception — rather, he stuck with the fan. “I held her hair up, I patted her through it. It was a humbling moment because I thought a) she’s really excited to see me, or b) she’s really, really disgusted to see me,” Meraz rationalized. “It kept me very very humbled. I think that sums everything up for me.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Ashley Greene, Kristen Stewart Style Risks Pay Off At ‘Eclipse’ Premiere

Robert Pattinson deviates from traditional black suit with a maroon Gucci getup. By Jean Bentley Ashley Greene attends the “Eclipse” premiere Thursday in L.A. Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images As far as men’s style goes, it’s hard to vary too much from the classic dark suit. But at Thursday night’s (June 24) premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” Robert Pattinson tried his best. The dreamboat vampire walked the black carpet in a maroon Gucci suit, while his werewolf rival Taylor Lautner played it safe in a classic black suit/ skinny tie combo. Among the ladies, muted colors and embellishments reigned supreme. Human star Kristen Stewart chose a white, one-sleeve Elie Saab minidress with a fierce cutout back. Her bestie, Dakota Fanning, also wore Elie Saab, though the Volturi guard went much more feminine in a short, flirty, nude-colored look with lace and feather accents. Fellow evil vampire Bryce Dallas Howard also went lacy in her long, mustard Dior frock, which was a rare spot of color amid a sea of neutrals. Also in the neutral camp was Ashley Greene, looking gorgeous in a light-blue column dress by Alexis Mabille Couture. Several castmembers wore Marchesa: Nikki Reed’s feathered number looked a tad Ice Capades chic (though she brought the ultimate accessory — her adorable little brother), while new wolf pack member Julia Jones shined in a silver, beaded strapless dress. A couple of Cullen men looked dapper with their “90210” star significant others. Kellan Lutz echoed Taylor with a simple black suit and skinny tie, while girlfriend AnnaLynne McCord opted for a form-fitting champagne Nicole Miller and neutral makeup. Fellow Cullen Clan member Peter Facinelli also donned a black pinstripe suit, which complemented wife Jennie Garth’s metallic Marchesa and bright lipstick. Metallics also seemed to be a hit, with Catalina Sandino Moreno in a belted, big-shouldered gunmetal-gray dress and Anna Kendrick in a ruffled olive frock. The boys weren’t immune to the metallic trend either, with wolf pack member Alex Meraz donning a light-blue pinstripe suit. Who rocked your favorite fashion of the night? Let us know in the comments!
