REVIEW: The Divide Drowns Flat Characters in Arty, Apocalyptic Gloss

Mickey (Michael Biehn), the paranoid building superintendent unwillingly responsible for allowing the characters in The Divide to survive the apocalypse, didn’t plan for or want company. And who can blame him? These people are awful . Like so many groups left in a survival situations (at least in movies, books and MTV reality shows), they shed their veneer of civilization with alarming rapidity as their lives take a turn for the worse. Written by Karl Mueller and Eron Sheean and directed by Xavier Gens, who earned a place for himself in the New French Extreme movement with his 2007  Frontier(s) before heading to Hollywood to make Hitman ,  The Divide is a stylish and would-be shocking variation on a familiar scenario, in which the horrors isolated survivors inflict on each other turn out to be worse than those lurking outside. Gens has talent, if also tendencies to steer the visuals into the music video realm, but he treats the characters here like mobile props and nothing more — the curve of a shaved skull or a tear trickling down a cheek just another bit of nice art direction on the gradual path toward the inevitable destruction of everyone on screen. What happened to the outside world is left to speculation — what looks like a bomb hits the city in the first scene, sending the inhabitants of a New York apartment building scrambling downstairs in search of shelter. Eight people force their way into Mickey’s shelter in the basement before he locks the door. There’s angular heroine Eva (Lauren German), her whiny French fiancé Sam (Iván González), Delvin (Courtney B. Vance), Bobby (Michael Eklund), brothers Josh (Milo Ventimiglia) and Adrien (Ashton Holmes), and Marilyn (Rosanna Arquette) and her daughter Wendy (Abbey Thickson). Mickey has food and water saved up, though not enough — at least not after strange men in hazmat suits barge into the underground shelter, kidnap the little girl, and weld the door shut on the remaining inhabitants. Hell may be other people, but it can also be scenarios in which people endlessly bicker their way to certain doom (this is why I find  The Walking Dead so hard to watch). Power games, alliances and divisions break out as time passes with no hope of rescue or an end, and as the characters grow more unstable and unhealthy, teeth falling out, hair growing patchy as they sit in the dark. Josh establishes himself as the alpha male, sharing Marilyn with Bobby in a scenario that degrades into violent sexual slavery — Arquette deserves either kudos or condolences for the degree to which she surrenders to a role that finds her being chained up, continually degraded and humiliated, treated like a dog, and smearing makeup on her face like some kind of crazed goth dolly. Eva is forced to protect Sam, who’s at the bottom of the totem pole, though she’s drawn to Adrien, who holds on to his sanity as the situation falls apart. These characters are at best doodles, and none of the performances are able to tease more depth out of them — the hints at history between them, like how Sam and Eva met, or the strained relationship between Josh and Adrien, are so sparse that when they’re thrown in they confuse more than they illuminate. The sprinkles of political relevance are clunkier and more problematic. Any film these days that includes the destruction of the New York skyline is going to calls up echoes of 9/11, but The Divide  strongly suggests that Mickey was a firefighter working that day whose issues and isolation are all related to that trauma, from his convictions that “the ragheads” are responsible for bombing the city to his creation of the underground bunker, decorated with an American flag. (Admittedly, Gens makes the Frenchman the least likable character — if the film’s a rough metaphor for a world in decline, the U.S. isn’t alone in taking on the chin.) At two hours, with its elegiac tone and deliberate pacing, The Divide  may lose gorehounds before it gets around to the finger chopping and corpse dismemberment. While there certainly are moments that will have the sensitive covering their eyes, the film’s most disturbing imagery isn’t actually related to carnage. A segment in which Josh heads outside to attempt to figure out what the suited-up soldiers are up to has a hallucinatory, medical nightmare feel to it, rich with the promise of terrible things going on just beyond our comprehension. Later, two characters shave their heads and eyebrows and transform themselves into near-alien figures out of a Matthew Barney video. Gens’s deftness with these visuals, and with the claustrophobic glide of his camera through the dim warrens of the underground space in which The Divide is almost exclusively set, is undeniable. It’s his apparent disinterest in the people filling it that makes the film such an uphill battle, in which the world ends and you can’t wait for the survivors just kill each other off already. Looks like police are getting a little smarter than criminals these days. There was a huge drug bust that took place in Washington, D.C…ATF agents acted as undercover officers and “music industry insiders” during the year-long sting. Police created the “Manic Enterprises” studio in Northeast Washington, for fictional rap artist Richie Valdez in November of 2010. Agents then told the underground world and black market that they were seeking to purchase weapons and drugs. In a year’s time agents confiscated 161 firearms (including a rocket launcher), 29 assault weapons, 80 pounds of methamphetamine, 21 pounds of cocaine, 1.25 gallons of PCP, 24 pounds of marijuana, heroin and Ecstasy. Yelawolf Recruits YouTube Fan For Radioactive Debut

Mona Moua’s video lands her on rapper’s ‘Write Your Name.’ By Rob Markman Yelawolf Photo: MTV News It’s not every day an artist takes a fan and gives them a feature on an album, but with Radioactive, Yelawolf did just that, placing singer Mona Moua on his debut LP. After Moua failed to get into a sold-out Minneapolis show, she went home and recorded “Ode to Yelawolf” and uploaded the original composition to YouTube . “It was actually really good,” Yela told MTV News about the song and video Moua uploaded back in April. “Her melody was good, she could play guitar. … I was a bit blown away by how talented she was.” In the video, Moua strums the guitar while singing about her disappointment after not getting into the sold-out show. “No Trunk Muzik for me,” she sang before integrating Yela song titles like “Mixing Up the Medicine” and “Pop the Trunk” into the rest of her sullen lyrics. Little did Moua know that the heartfelt display would land her on ‘Wolf’s “Write Your Name” on Radioactive, which dropped last week. “We had a record called ‘Write Your Name’ about the unsung hero, and it just so happened that her tone, it just fit perfectly,” he said, crediting the idea to Ghet-O-Vision head Kawan “KP” Prather. “KP had the idea to bring her out and put her on the hook and she killed it.” Produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, “Write Your Name” mixes the drums from Rick Ross’ “Aston Martin Music” with a new, melancholy piano melody. On the track, Yelawolf uses his small-town come-up from Gadsden, Alabama, to exemplify how much more untapped talent may be waiting in the wings. Moua sings the all-too-perfect hook, “I’ll write your name across the sky and take away the stars, ’cause you light up the night/ You’re as high as the moon, when you’re here with me/ That’s why I’m gonna write your name for the world to see.” Have you heard “Write Your Name” yet? B.o.B Drops E.P.I.C. Mixtape

Mixtape Daily looks at free Strange Clouds preview, E.P.I.C. (Every Play is Crucial), featuring Eminem, T.I. and Lil Wayne. By Rob Markman B.o.B Photo: Michael Roman/FilmMagic Mixtape Daily: Main Pick Mixtape : E.P.I.C. (Every Play is Crucial) Headliner : B.o.B Representing : Atlanta Real Spit : B.o.B is out of this world. From his underground 2009 single “I’ll Be in the Sky” to his Hayley Williams-assisted hit “Airplanes,” Bobby Ray has always fancied himself a different type of rap artist, and on his next LP, things will get stranger. His upcoming sophomore effort, Strange Clouds, aims to stretch the boundaries of music. “It’s all about the fusion between the outer limits and the inner limits, from the sky to the ground; it’s everything in between, above and below, so Strange Clouds, for me, it’s my ‘Twilight Zone,’ ” he told Mixtape Daily on the video set for his “Strange Clouds” single. But before B.o.B embarks on that particular mission, he gave fans a taste of what they can expect from the new album Monday (November 28) when he dropped his newest mixtape, E.P.I.C. (Every Play is Crucial) on DatPiff . During the course of 15 tracks, Bob serves an array of tracks that showcase his multitude of musical abilities. He’s spitting straight bars alongside Meek Mill and Playboy Tre on the title track, then experimenting with melody on “What Are We Doing.” The hard-as-nails “Boom Bap” is a hip-hop purist’s dream: The drum-driven track unites the multiplatinum-selling T.I. with underground hero Mos Def, and together with Bobby Ray, they go in without need for a hook, MC’ing just for the sake of MC’ing. Things get even better on “Things Get Worse” with Eminem, as Slim Shady brings the ATLien into his world of hysterical celeb-bashing. On “Welcome to the Jungle,” B.o.B tackles the Throne’s kinetic instrumental from their much-talked-about album. “Perfect Symetry” unites the “Nothin’ on You” star with Atlanta’s 2011 street king 2 Chainz — and then, of course, there is Lil Wayne on “Strange Clouds.” What a preview. Jackie Christie Talks “Mama Drama” [EXCLUSIVE]

See the article here:

Official basketball wife (check her credentials, she’s wedded 16 times!) Jackie Christie has been bad mouthed by the media for years as Doug’s ball-and-chain/parole officer, but she’s not the she-devil the media makes her out to be. Since production started for VH1’s “Basketball Wives LA,” Jackie Christie has been taking care of an ailing mother and playing mom to more than her three children. Here’s what she had to say when she spoke to TV One . BBWLA In reference to the cast of BBWLA, Jackie Christie says she is a mentor for the other women. Her wholesome yet spicy delivery can make even Draya calm down and adhere. “I don’t have an issue with anybody on the show,” Jackie says. “I’m more of the mentor. They come to me for advice, my intentions are to help them to be better people.” Jackie says when she lost her mother Cora last month, all of her cast members reached out to her, even the ones she didn’t necessarily get along with. “I was touched by the girls when they reached out,” Jackie Says, “It shows that they’re great people. Everybody put what they thought about me aside and reached out.” The Place This Basketball Wife Calls Home Losing Her Mother Before her mom’s death, Jackie and family made frequent trips from L.A. up to Washington to spend time with Cora, who was battling liver cancer. “Losing my mom, I’d say is the hardest thing I ever had to deal with my life,” says Jackie. They became close 19 years ago when Cora started helping raise Jackie’s kids. “I was a working mother,” Jackie says, “I said if you stop working and help I will make sure that I take care of you always. We’ve gotten closer in the 19 years; it’s amazing what I learned from her.” One of the things Jackie learned from Cora was how to be a great mother, even to her oldest daughter Ta’Kari, who was recently involved with some social media mishap. The Drama Surrounding Her Oldest Daughter Ta’Kari challenged Jackie’s mothering techniques and the authenticity of her relationship with her own mother on Twitter, but Jackie says her daughter didn’t do it on her own. “I love my daughter with all my heart. I was shocked when all that stuff came up because it couldn’t be further from the truth,” Jackie says. “When I asked about it, there were people who were trying to push my daughter to do that stuff. It is pathetic. I would never put my daughter out there and throw her under the bus.” Jackie says Ta’Kari, who was spending weekend with her at the time of the interview, apologized and they have prayed about the issue. “Some website tried to release that article.” Christie says, “It was a lot of people doing that, claiming they were with Ta’Kari; she had nothing to do with that.” Jackie, who is used to the media bashing her name, has not allowed the gossip to bother her. Even though her mother has passed and the first season of “BWLA” is over, Jackie continues to spread her wisdom on love, parenting, and friendships though her many entrepreneurial pursuits including inspirational books and Jean Rah Fya record company. Kaskade Talks ‘Sweet’ Skrillex Collabo, ‘Lick It’

Two versions of song appear on Kaskade’s double album Fire and Ice. By Nick Philippou Kaskade Photo: MTV News Kaskade is making EDM fans’ dreams come true on his highly anticipated double album Fire and Ice, available exclusively on Monday (October 24). He teams up with budding dubstep icon Skrillex for “Lick It,” a track so tasty that you might try to do just that. We’ve secured a preview for your electro-fix, and it’s everything you would imagine from a combination of Kaskade’s progressive house vibe and Skrillex’s sound-crunching bass riffs. Kaskade predicted to MTV News that “Lick It” will definitely surprise people, in a good way. “I think most people went, ‘Wait, Kaskade and Skrillex — that’s two different things.’ But I think that’s what makes it interesting, you know?” Kaskade said. “Don’t take somebody who’s doing the exact same thing I’m doing, let’s find people that I really enjoy, but are doing something different than I’m doing.” Kaskade enticed an impressive group of collaborators from across genres for Fire and Ice, including Skylar Gray and alt rockers Neon Trees, but when pairing up with Skrillex, Kaskade knew he was enlisting one of EDM’s rising stars. “It’s crazy — Skrillex has had a massive year,” Kaskade said. “I think because not that many people knew about him last year, and then all of a sudden he’s just everywhere this year. It’s cool that he’s been able to do that. It’s been a massive impact on the underground.” Skrillex’s breakout stems from a rabid fanbase fueling tour demands after a steady stream of successes this year, like his remix of Benny Benassi’s “Cinema” and his recent single “First of the Year.” Those followed up his massive 2010 debut, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,” which opened at #1 on the Beatport Top 100. Kaskade told MTV News that he had so much fun doing a remix of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites for Skrillex that he immediately knew that he wanted to do an original song with the dubstep master of Generation Next. Now, thankful fans of both artists will get two new songs from the pair on Kaskade’s double LP Fire and Ice, with one offering a club-ready and revved-up Fire version of “Lick It” and the other a more down-tempo Ice rendition of the song. “I had already worked up a track and had something in mind, and I threw it to him and this is what we got,” Kaskade said. “Skrillex sent it back to me, and I was like, ‘Sweet, dude — we got that bass patch in there. Yeah!’ ” Who would you like to hear Kaskade, Skrillex or both team up with and do a song for? Maybe they’ll take your two cents if you leave a comment! Related Artists Kaskade Skrillex

‘Real Steel’ Sequel Will Focus On Story’s ‘Humanity’

‘I think that this movie works because of its humanity,’ director Shawn Levy says. By Kara Warner Hugh Jackman in “Real Steel” Photo: DreamWorks Pictures With its impressive TKO into first place at the box office this weekend, it’s no surprise that there is a “Real Steel” sequel already in the works. The cat was out of the bag back in April, when news leaked that the studio had already commissioned the film’s screenwriter/actor John Gatins to begin work on a second installment. So when MTV News caught up with director Shawn Levy at the movie’s premiere recently, we tried to get a few more details from him about the potential franchise. “Well, it has certainly been leaked that the studio would like us to make another one, and that’s based on the way we’ve seen the audience react to the movie — they react really emotionally. So we’ll see, if we’re lucky in the next month, for sure we’ll make another one,” Levy said. But what direction will the sequel go in? Will there be more robots? New characters? “I think that this movie works because of its humanity, so if we made a sequel, the humanity would remain the priority,” he said, only slightly dodging the question. When we tried the same line of questioning with the movie’s star, Hugh Jackman, he didn’t slightly dodge the question, he discarded it almost entirely. “Imagine asking a football player the night before the Super Bowl if he thinks they’ll make the Super Bowl next year,” he said with a smile, meaning that the first film will have to rake in plenty of cash before the studio signals for the go-ahead. “It’s a bit like that.” Levy was a bit more loose-lipped when he spoke about the subject with IndieWire , admitting that the story will continue with all of its major players. “I will produce and direct again, yeah. Hugh [Jackman]’s definitely in and, certainly, I can’t give away too much, but Dakota [Goyo], Evangeline [Lilly] and Hugh are all a big part of the sequel. It is the same characters, the next chapter. It delves into the fallout of the new fame and money that the Kentons are going to have as a result of the Zeus-Atom fight. It also delves into something I thought was a cool aspect of the movie that I didn’t have time to get into, which is the class warfare between the underground unsanctioned world of robot boxing and the monetized corporately funded league. The truth is, it’s not unlike the way boxing saw its popularity contested with the rise of a more violent, less rule-bound MMA.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Real Steel.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
