Fabolous Stops By MTV News’ ‘RapFix Live’!

Loso answers fans’ Twitter questions and (maybe) breaks down elements of his signature tending topics on Thursday. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: Jonathan Leibson/ WireImage Fabolous walks a fine line, maintaining his presence on the underground mixtape circuit and cultivating a mainstream persona with his album releases. His most recent project, There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music EP, stems from the similarly titled mixtape There Is No Competition 2: The Funeral Service. Both collections serve as a warm-up to Fab’s next album, Loso’s Way 2. According to the Def Jam rapper, if he had to choose another MC to take a turn on the mixtape scene, his choice would come down to two fellow New York lyricists. “A Nas mixtape would be crazy, a Hov one too,” he told MTV News. “We haven’t seen any of the icons do it [in a while]. I think somewhere, we need a place where Hov doesn’t have to talk corporate and Nas doesn’t have to get too deep on us. We need one of those. I just wanna hear Nas [rapping], ‘Splittin’ Phillies, sippin’ on Baileys with three Israelis.’ I don’t know if he’s still in that space,” Fab said, reciting one of the God MC’s memorable mixtape freestyles. “A lot of things have transpired since. And I wanna hear Hov talk his thing. He still talks his thing and Nas still talks his thing, but I wanna see them in their mixtape essence.” Fabolous will talk mixtapes and more on Thursday when he appears on MTV News’ “RapFix Live” live stream with Sway on MTV.com at 1 p.m. ET. So, wondering why Loso still releases mixtapes after all his success? Ready for the inside scoop on his next project? Want to ask Fabolous about his recent rift with Soulja Boy Tell’em ? Tweet questions to the Brooklyn MC at @MTVNews with #rapfixlive or upload video questions to him at Your.MTV.com and Sway may get them on-air. Fabolous follows past “RapFix Live” guests Rick Ross , Wiz Khalifa, Fat Joe and Lloyd Banks. What should we ask Fabolous? Share your questions in the comments! Related Artists Fabolous

School Named After Al Gore and Rachel ‘DDT’ Carson Built on Toxic Soil

A new school will be opening in Los Angeles next Monday that is named after Nobel Laureate Al Gore and Rachel Carson, the woman almost single-handedly responsible for DDT being banned in the ’70s. Even more delicious than the names associated with the new $75.5-million Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences is that it was built on land thought to be highly-contaminated with various chemicals which could pose a threat to students. As the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday: Critics say the campus’ location poses a long-term health risk to students and staff. School district officials insist that the Arlington Heights property is clean and safe. And they’ve pledged to check vapor monitors and groundwater wells to make sure. “Renaming this terribly contaminated school after famous environmental advocates is an affront to the great work that these individuals have done to protect the public’s health from harm,” an environmental coalition wrote in a letter to the Los Angeles Unified School District. Making sure the school is safe “would be an even better way to honor their contribution to society.” Construction crews were working at the campus up to the Labor Day weekend, replacing toxic soil with clean fill. All told, workers removed dirt from two 3,800-square-foot plots to a depth of 45 feet, space enough to hold a four-story building. The soil had contained more than a dozen underground storage tanks serving light industrial businesses. Additional contamination may have come from the underground tanks of an adjacent gas station. A barrier will stretch 45 feet down from ground level to limit future possible fuel leakage. An oil well operates across the street, but officials said they’ve found no associated risks. Like many local campuses, this school also sits above an oil field, but no oil field-related methane has been detected. Groundwater about 45 feet below the surface remains contaminated but also poses no risk, officials said. You really can’t make this stuff up. Of course, readers shouldn’t miss the irony of Carson and Gore’s names being placed on a school that could end up being hazardous to the health of attendees. After all, Carson has the blood of millions nay billions of malaria deaths on her hands as a result of her paranoid book “Silent Spring” leading to the ban of DDT many years ago. As for Gore, if he ever gets his way, and nations around the world adopt cap-and-trade programs to limit carbon dioxide emissions, millions will likely die as a result of being kept from modern forms of energy creation. As such, it’s quite fitting a school be named after these two radical environmentalists that could end up harming the very students that attend it.  On the other hand, one could make the case that if the toxic fumes don’t hurt these poor, unsuspecting young souls, the environmental nonsense they’re being taught certainly will. It’s like rain on your wedding day.

Afrojack Talks His ‘Freaky’ Lady Gaga ‘Alejandro’ Remix

Gaga’s people ‘were like, ‘we want that crazy Afrojack vibe,’ so I went really crazy.’ Dutch DJ/producer says. By Akshay Bhansali Afrojack Photo: MTV News “Lady Gaga, she’s a freak,” Dutch DJ/producer Afrojack told MTV News on Saturday, “so I thought, ‘Gotta make a freaky song!’ ” He’s referring to his remix of Lady Gaga’s most recent single and video, “Alejandro,” which is among a collection of remixes featured on Gaga’s recent Alejandro: The Remixes EP. In the electronic/dance music world, Nick van de Wall (a.k.a. Afrojack) is one of the genre’s rising stars: His mentor is crossover star David Guetta , and he has been instrumental in popularizing the “Holland House” — or as he calls it, “bleep” — sound. Interestingly, when Gaga’s camp put in their request for the remix, at first Afrojack thought it better to deliver a more pop-radio-friendly track. But as fans of Lady Gaga have come to know, she prides herself on keeping it real. Turns out Gaga wanted a dirty, more underground, Afrojack joint. “First I thought, ‘Let me just give them a soft mix,’ ” Afrojack recalled. “And they were like, ‘No — we want that crazy Afrojack vibe.’ And so I went really crazy. I was even in the studio like, ‘This is pretty damn hard.’ I sent it and they were like, ‘ F— yeah!’ ” Afrojack also told MTV News that he recently completed an official remix for Diddy/Dirty Money’s “Hello, Good Morning,” and that fans should expect some serious house. “It’s like really, really underground,” Afrojack said. “Even more than the ‘Alejandro’ remix — like even more back to the underground, purely for the house heads, because I know [Diddy] works with Felix Da Housecat. He’s really into that electro stuff, so I thought, ‘You know what? I’m gonna make him a really underground mix.’ ” Related Artists Afrojack Lady Gaga

Drake Reps H-Town ‘Till The Day I Die’ On Away From Home Tour

The Toronto MC brings out Houston rap luminaries Bun B, Lil Keke, Trae Tha Truth and others. By Cynithia Allen Drake (file) Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Drake did the Texas two-step this week, bringing his Away From Home Tour to Dallas on Wednesday, and the next day, to Houston, where he closed out his initial run of U.S. dates. The 23-year-old Toronto MC’s show was highly anticipated in H-Town, a city Drake gave props to on “November 18th,” off the Chopped N Screwed version of his So Far Gone mixtape. He opened Thursday night’s show at Houston’s Verizon Wireless Theater with his club banger “Over,” whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Drizzy told his fans that “only three things matter at this time: Number one, I’m Drizzy Drake. Two, I’m part of the hottest team in the game right now — Young Money/ Cash Money. Finally, I rep H-Town till the day I die.” The Grammy-nominated artist showed his respect for the City of Syrup with a performance of the aforementioned “November 18th,” which true Houstonians know was inspired by the Screwed Up Clique’s late-90s posse cut “June 18.” One of the Clique’s original members, Lil Keke, was on hand to deliver his verse from the ensemble track. And the Houston rap scene was amply represented at the concert: In addition to Keke, Drake brought out Houston luminaries Z-Ro, Trae Tha Truth and the Underground King himself, the timeless Bun B. Cash Money’s Birdman, who has made appearances on several dates of the tour, came through for “Money to Blow,” and then performed the Big Tymers hit “Still Fly.” The theater seemed to shake to the rafters as the excited crowd began reciting lyrics — “Gator boots with the pimped-out Gucci shoes.” The stage was then turned over to Young Money members Gudda Gudda and Lil Twist, who came out to assist on “Bed Rock.” The show continued with the lovemaking theme on “A Night Off,” which saw Drake bring out a microphone whose stand was covered in female undergarments. The ladies went berserk, throwing bras and panties at the dynamic MC, a practice that has become a ritual at every Away From Home show. In an interview Drake gave to CNN , he said he was attempting to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most bras thrown at a performer during a single show. When Drake chose a 27-year-old Houston fan to join him onstage, he warned her that anything could happen, including licking, sucking or kissing. No one seemed to be left disappointed at this show. And while he may not have been given the key to the City of Syrup, Drake proved he already has the town on lock. Are you planning to see Drake in Concert now that he’s added more dates to his tour? Drake Talks About The Evolution Of Mixtapes

‘A mixtape can’t be the songs that don’t make your album,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images State of the Streets: Drake Talks Mixtapes On Mondays, we usually bring you our main pick, but we had to start this week by saluting mixtapes. We’re proud that so many MCs are stepping their mixtape game up. The mixtape world is strong, potent and competitive right now. This year alone, we’ve seen Fabolous, Wiz Khalifa, Jim Jones and Asher Roth drop product off in the streets and the Internet. The next few weeks are going to be flooded with ferocity, with Young Jeezy, the Game, T.I. and Rick Ross, just to name a few, dropping soon. Long live the underground! We asked Drake — the guy with the biggest mixtape of the past few years, So Far Gone — what he thought about the state of mixtapes right now. He said everyone has to come with their best. “I think that when creating a mixtape, you have to approach it with a selfless mind-set,” Drake told us. “A mixtape can’t be the songs that don’t make your album, or songs that aren’t good enough to make your album make your mixtape — unless you’re that good. There aren’t that many people that are that good. I’m not that good. That mixtape [ So Far Gone ] is me working my hardest. It wasn’t ‘Oh, here are the songs I’m gonna give away to you ’cause I have better songs coming.’ A mixtape has become an album. “Before, I remember people used to be in the studio cutting songs, and they would be like, ‘Oh, that song is OK. I’ll just put it on my mixtape,’ ” he added. “Now a mixtape is an actual tool. It’s a format you need. You don’t necessarily need it, but it can be useful. Like with Fab and the other guys, I know they do a lot of rapping on other guys’ beats. It’s hard to tour like that, as incredible as it may be. Now Wayne, when the No Ceilings set comes on, it’s ridiculous. It’s hard to rap over other people’s songs and have it be timeless. With So Far Gone, when I did flip other people’s songs, half the time people didn’t know what song it was. I tried to pick stuff that was new or rare or just like an album cut. But yeah, man, if I use somebody else’s beat, I try to make a song out of it.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . I had to go to Zone Six. Have I ever let you down?” Alley Boy gets the prize for wildest mixtape title this year (see above). The rapper said he wants to keep street rap in the spotlight. “I put that title on the mixtape because I wanted something to stand out,” Alley said. (Mission accomplished.) “Just to be different. The topics I went in on, it’s a lot of things people would call negative. My whole image, it seems it’s so negative. I went there with it. I feel that those words definitely represent my attitude. It’s so watered down in Atlanta right now. I wanted to let folks know I’m a force to be reckoned with. I wanted a strong concept and strong title.” He also has a story behind his MC name: “I’m from Zone Six. Edgewood’s finest,” he said. “The way I came up in these hallways, these cuts, these alleys, it just fit me.” Alley has a slew of guest spots holding it down for the A as well. “I wanted to go in with my boy [Young] Dro,” he said. “We got a song called ‘Tall.’ Yung L.A., we had some controversy goin’ on.
