BOSSIP Exclusive: Twin DJ Duo Two Fresh Talks Merging Electronic Music & Hip Hop, And Working With Family

Twin Producer Team Two Fresh Talks Taking On The Industry You may not have heard of Two Fresh quite yet, but the twin brother DJ duo is already highly respected in the production world and doing collabs with up-and-coming rappers on the trap/hip-hop scene. With a sound that fuses the hip hop and electronic dance worlds and connections to Mad Decent, the twins are set to skyrocket in the next year — they just dropped an EP featuring Vic Mensa, Joey Purp and more last October and the buzz is building more and more. Take a listen to their latest track off their “Torch” EP, ‘Still Got It’ feat. Vic Mensa & Joey Purp: BOSSIP caught up with Two Fresh during Coachella Weekend to get the details on their performance at the Heineken House, find out more about the evolution of their sound from wild and crazy dance beats to hip-hop tracks, and what it’s like to work with a family member 24/7. So, for those unfamiliar, tell the people who you are and what your sound is: Kendo: We’re Two Fresh. We’re from Nashville, but we live in LA right now, and majority of our music is Hip-op/Rap/Trap/R&B — that’s the core and the vibe. Coachella is really a dream stage for a lot of artists, and you’re already here at such a young age. What do you feel like got you to this point? Shweez: I feel like it was the progression of our music. In the past two years, we’ve gained notoriety being producers for MC’s and vocalists. Kendo: Right, so we’re shining. We we started out making music, it was all like electronic music — more like the Flying Lotus, J. Dilla, weird beats stuff. After traveling, producing, and just being artists, and even from our move to LA, we finally found our lane and our sound. So that’s why I say this is our first time at Coachella as “Two Fresh.” This is it. Nice! Now coming from Nashville, it’s not exactly known as a hub for the type of music that you make. How did you get into DJing and producing your unique style of music? Shweez: It came with progression. Our older brothers listened to like Three Six [Mafia] and stuff like that, so that’s been an influence. Now that we produce more rap stuff, it shows. Kendo: Yeah, now that we’ve moved a little away from EDM and more toward rap, the influence of hearing stuff like that early, and how to make a rap beat so that someone can actually rap on it really shows. Shweez: Yeah, kind of holding back in some aspects. Three years ago, we’d make a beat and it it would be wild – just be weird, no rules, whatever. Now we’re able to listen to it with a mature ear and think “okay, this is where we can have a bridge,” and think of it as a song, so we can work with more artists and work together rather than just taking over. Now, even though electronic dance was born from us, you really don’t see a lot of Black faces dominating that space — it isn’t really considered “ours.” Being that you don’t really look like all the popular DJ/producers in that world, how do you navigate that space? Kendo: I feel like that’s why we are Two Fresh. We’re still going to play some EDM stuff, but we’ll also be playing some hip hop, some rap, because it’s all in the same vein. I mean, trap comes from hip hop. So, taking that ride of going to our live show, taking that wave of playing the EDM stuff and playing rap and it all works together is why Two Fresh is who Two Fresh is. Is it easy for you all working with your twin brother and being around each other 24/7? Kendo: Yeah, that’s my best friend. Schweez: It’s cool, because we can be brutally honest. There’s no holding back. Even if we’re not right, we can tell each other “oh, that’s not tight,” or “yeah, that’s ill.” I feel like with people who you just meet for the first time, you’ll compromise and you’ll keep your mouth shut because you don’t know them as well. But, we’re brothers, so we can keep it real. Be sure to check out their Torch EP HERE . We can’t wait to hear more from these brothers… Mad Decent

Tarica June Takes On Gentrification In D.C. With Conscious Rhymes “But Anyway” [Video]

Y’all ready for a new female MC on the block ? DC Hip Hop Artist Tarica June premieres music video for the politically inspired single “But Anyway,” created over a patchwork of old school tracks utilizing the nostalgia of songs by Suzanne Vega, Eric B. & Rakim, and P.M. Dawn, cleverly illustrating the pangs of a city in deep socioeconomic flux *** It’s no secret that the presence of the female emcee in the landscape of mainstream hip-hop culture is severely underrepresented. A culture that seems to undervalue the non-conforming female voice unwilling to bend to trends and commercial viability. But Washington, DC based hip hop artist Tarica June has a unique and celebrated skill set that undoubtedly gives her quite the edge on the competition, male and female. Her dossier flaunts high praises from the likes of seminal hip-hop artist Chuck D (Public Enemy) and upcoming collaborations with hip hop artist M-1 (Dead Prez). With an effortless flow that sits haughtily at the nexus of diverse influences such as Sonia Sanchez, Yasiin Bey, and T.I., it’s easy to see why media outlets called her debut “one of the most important projects in recent Hip Hop memory.” And with her upcoming EP Stream of Consciousness and full-length debut on the horizon, the rapper and Howard Law School graduate is destined to shatter stereotypes and transcend categorization in one fell swoop. To satiate fans eagerly awaiting her follow up, Tarica releases “But Anyway,” a thoughtful and refreshingly honest take on DC’s current wave of gentrification. Over a patchwork old school track that utilizes the nostalgia of songs by Suzanne Vega, Eric B. & Rakim, and P.M. Dawn, “But Anyway” cleverly illustrates the pangs of a city in deep socioeconomic flux. The video, Tarica June’s directorial debut, is a colorful and celebratory collage of shots on the streets of her hometown that serves a dual purpose. “Everybody knows that DC was the site of a crack epidemic. I definitely witnessed that growing up, so I won’t discount that. But there was also was a very potent sense of community here.” The searing track “But Anyway” prompted an invite to perform for the delegation of the United Nationas Human Rights Council in early 2016. Her upcoming Stream Of Consciousness EP offers listeners an even more intimate peek into the mind of Tarica June with subtle hints about her forthcoming album. The city’s seismic cultural transition and shifting landscape caused Tarica to reflect on how to best preserve the memory of the city she calls home. Traveling in the same vein, another EP track “Four Unit (My Life)” finds Tarica discusses the pangs of an artist struggling to exist in a city with a soaring cost of living. The track “Uncompromised” is formulated as a push-back on the oft pedaled, well meaning, yet maligned advice that every female emcee likely knows all too well. The pulsing “S.O.C. (Cray)” is a trippy trap laden excursion where Tarica June rhythmically elaborates on her unique musical perspective. “The Cover Up” fashions a thought provoking commentary on how readily society constructs facades in the age of social media – in effect making us less social while normalizing a contrived existence via artificial intelligence. With her guitar and her experiences as her mediums of choice, Tarica June aims to paint an unbridled lyrical portrait steered by authentic sound and vision. At this point in her career, she is well aware of the boxes that categorize her. As an emcee, a conscious rapper, and a female artist. More About Tarica June: Raised in the nation’s capital, Tarica June was reared under the musical influence of her father, a jazz aficionado, her mother, who played Bob Marley daily, and her generation’s chosen mode of fearless expression: hip hop. Away from home in high school, Tarica June was exposed to a new musical vernacular as she found her hip hop heroes juxtaposed with the music of her dorm mates in the form of Tracy Chapman, Grateful Dead, and U2. She began to further expand on her musical tastes in college. Yet unbeknownst to her classmates, she was simultaneously honing a nascent talent that she’d kept hidden for years. Upon graduation, Tarica June relocated back to DC where she found a burgeoning community of Black artists in the midst of a renaissance aptly dubbed The Movement. After one of these musicians used a song that she had written without crediting her, Tarica June decided to attend law school. “I figured that as a creative person I should learn my rights because I saw how easy it is to get taken advantage of if you don’t know the law” she explains. She enrolled at Howard University School of Law, where she focused on intellectual property. While in law school she continued to work on her music, and in 2010 Tarica June bowed with the release of her bold debut mixtape Moonlight Revolution. Waxing poetic over a diverse array of instrumentals from top 40 hits by artists such as Common, 50 Cent, and U2, Moonlight Revolution finds Tarica June firmly establishing herself as a formidable solo artist wielding her dynamic lyrical torch to illuminate a bleak space. Embroidered with nods and references to lauded writer Ntozake Shange as well as trailblazing recording artists Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, Moonlight Revolution was a bold proclamation of fortitude from agile mind of a new, independent, Black female hip-hop artist. Moonlight Revolution struck a chord, putting Tarica June on the radar of various media outlets and festival organizers. Respected website Soul Bounce featured the album in their Bounce-Worthy section, calling Tarica “young, fresh and talented.” HipHopDX wrote an exhilarating, heartfelt 1,700 word editorial in response to Moonlight Revolution, calling it “the logical manifestations of a free mind” and “one of the most important projects in recent Hip Hop memory.”

School Blues: Is Your Child Being Treated And Graded Fairly?

After a particularly frustrating week with some the teaching staff at my son’s school, I happened to stumble upon a short video titled “The System of Racial Inequality.” In this just over 60 second soundbyte, a white woman, Tilman Smith, who has experience in the education system, pretty much confirmed my greatest concern with a certain race of teacher and my son. Her brief dialogue was alarming when describing the way white teachers tend to judge children based simply on race of school-aged black boys in particular. Smith gave an example and explained how white teachers would think highly of an “animated and cheeky” white boy in the class, label him “smart” and would all but dismiss his behavior because, “boys will be boys.” On the other hand, however, if a black child in the class displayed the same behavior she wouldn’t be so quick to think his “animated and cheeky” demeanor is smart but instead would raise an eyebrow and take mental note that, “I might need to keep an eye on him…” [ MadameNoire ] Would You Get A Tattoo At Whole Foods? The Flash Season 2 Episode 11 Recap: In Revese

Barry faced an unexpected visit from a former enemy on The Flash Season 2 Episode 11 . Elsewhere, Cisco enjoyed some extra-good vibration… Patty put her brain to good use… and an unfortunate incident brought the Wests together. Watch The Flash Season 2 Episode 11 Online Let’s run it all down, shall we? Back present time, Eobard Thawne sought out Mercury Labs’ Christina McGee. He needed to use her tachyon tech in order to get back to the future. (We know, we know: How is he actually alive?!? Because this marked his first trip back in time… therefore, he had not yet become the Nora-killer who got “erased” on the The Flash Season 1 finale. Got it? Good.) Cisco, meanwhile, aspired to fine-tune his unique ability, which Harry solved by figuring out that an adrenaline rush is its trigger. So Harry came up with a cool visor for Cisco to use, a visor that enabled Cisco to see that Eobard eventually kills McGee… nearly four hours from the moment he saw it. We’ll get back to that shortly, but first: Iris went to her sick mother’s bedside after learning about her battle with cancer. We had to fight back the tears as she forgave her dying parent and as she later reached out to Wally in order to reunite the family before their mom passed away. It took Iris telling him about Eddie for the estranged siblings to bond over loss and for Wally to eventually let go of his anger and show up at Iris’ doorstep, asking if she’ll go with him to see Francine one final time. View Slideshow: 15 Best Shows in CW History: Ranked! As for Caitlin? She shared with Barry the news that Jay is dying, recommending they track down his Earth-One doppelganger to get some healthy DNA to transfuse… or something along those lines. Barry, however, failed to find our Jay. After learning of the search, Jay took Caitlin to the park to point out his counterpart: bespectacled Hunter Zolomon, who evidently was adopted and raised under a different name. Alas, since the speedster process mutated Jay’s DNA, Hunter is sadly of no value, although his DC Comics origin story sure makes one’s mind go… zoom. (Get it?!?) After Barry mentioned that he and Joe assist the S.T.A.R Labs team sometimes, Patty investigates and realizes that Barry’s cases often involve The Flash. They also contain details that the CSI had no way of knowing. Joe remains quiet when asked about these pieces of information, as does Barry… even after Patty says she’ll stay in Central City if he just tells her the truth. Patty laments his silence, leaves for Midway, but then phones in a false alarm to Barry about a gunman. When he arrives and Patty learns his secret, she assures him that she understands and everything is “good,” but she still leaves. View Slideshow: 18 Sexy Small Screen Superheroes Finally: Cisco tracks down an activated tachyon gizmo and Barry races to the scene to stop Eobard from killing Christina. Barry wins their battle and Reverse-Flash gets locked up, but Cisco’s nose bleeds subsequently worsen. He starts to seize and actually phase away. Harry deduces that this is happening because they affected the timeline by capturing Thawne – and therefore must release him and get him back to his future. Barry hesitates, but understands. He sets his mother’s killer free and then combines their speed to catapult Thawne to where/when he came, instantly reviving Cisco. Thank goodness, right? Go ahead and watch The Flash online via TV Fanatic if you need to catch up on anything you may have missed.
