For Discussion: Black Ebola Patient Dies, Whites Are Cured — Did The Hospital Do All They Could?

Is the care of Black Ebola patients secondary? Family And Friends Question Deceased Ebola Patient’s Care The Texas Ebola patient has succumbed to the effects of the deadly disease . However, we already know of multiple cases of White Americans infected with Ebola who have made recoveries from their seemingly deadly condition. Is it any coincidence that the man of African heritage didn’t receive all the experimental treatments and emergency care that others in his same condition have been treated to since this epidemic surfaced? Via LA Times : Family and friends of the first person to die of Ebola in the United States condemned the medical care that Thomas Eric Duncan received and called for a full examination of the case. Duncan, 42, who was from Liberia, died Wednesday in Dallas after being infected with Ebola in Africa. He had been in isolation, being treated with an experimental drug, since Sept. 28. Hours after Duncan’s death was announced, his fiancee, Louise Troh, called for an examination of how Duncan was treated. “I trust a thorough examination will take place regarding all aspects of his care,” she said in a statement. Duncan, who had left Liberia Sept. 19, was treated at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital with the experimental antiviral drug brincidofovir. However, he did not receive any transfusion of blood from an Ebola patient who had recovered. That treatment is considered experimental and was used on another American who has since recovered. There also are questions about how Duncan was treated when he first arrived at the hospital Sept. 25, complaining of symptoms and telling personnel that he had traveled from West Africa. The travel information should have been a warning sign, officials have said. Duncan was released with antibiotics. He was rushed back to the hospital three days later with more severe symptoms. Troh’s daughter, Youngor Jallah, condemned the hospital’s actions. “The hospital didn’t treat him right,” Jallah said. “That’s what everybody thinks,” added Aaron Yah, the father of four children with Jallah. But what it really all boils down to — according to Duncan’s family and lawyer — is the fact that he was Black and uninsured…thus not really “worthy” of the hospital’s time and attention. Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, raised questions over whether Duncan was initially released from a Dallas hospital because of his race and lack of health insurance. “The real elephant in the room is, the man was black, he had no insurance, and therefore he was basically turned away,” Price told the Los Angeles Times. When asked how he knew Duncan didn’t have insurance, Price said, “If he had pulled out an insurance card, he wouldn’t have had a problem. I’m willing to stake my life on the fact he didn’t have insurance. He’s from Liberia!” Price called Texas Health Presbyterian a “boutique” hospital that doesn’t normally serve indigent patients. Price added: “I make the claim, we know he didn’t have insurance, and he was black. They did what they traditionally do: They gave him some pills and sent him on his way, basically ignoring all the CDC protocols. “If you’re of color and present without insurance — they’re not going to call it ‘dumping,’ but in the final analysis, that’s basically what they did,” he said. A hospital spokesman responded: “Mr. Duncan was treated the way any other patient would have been treated, regardless of nationality or ability to pay for care. We have a long history of treating a multicultural community in this area.” Hey, maybe the hospital would have ignored anyone who came in very obviously ill. But the situation does raise a few red flags. What do you think? Did their lack of value of Black life and the uninsured move the hospital to disregard Duncan’s symptoms early on — and possibly lead to his death?

Supernatural Season 10 Episode 1 Recap: A Man of His Word

We kicked off Supernatural Season 10 Episode 1 with Sam torturing a demon in order to learn the location of Crowley and Dean. Upon slicing her throat, Sam was told: “Whatever soul you had, whatever Boy Scout code you cuddled up to at night, it’s all gone.” So… yeah. It was a nice and bright opening few moments. Cut to four weeks later and Sam still has no idea where to find his brother. Neither does Castiel who admits to missing Dean and wonders: is the real Dean even still out there? Or has the demon taken over completely? We then do finally see Dean, as he’s enjoying some karaoke, not caring one bit that everyone’s booing him. He also hooks up with a waitress, casually dismisses her afterward and beats up her abusive boyfriend. Badly. Oh, and he kills a number of Abaddon’s groupies with the First Blade. However, as Sam later discovers, they were actually sent by Crowley, who’s attempting to keep Dean at the ready for their professional future. Sam vows to save Dean, but Crowley comes back at him by saying it’s not what Dean’s become that bothers him. “You can’t stand the fact that he’s mine,” he states. “Dean Winchester completes me.” Yup, move over, Jerry Maguire! Crowley’s mission? To “create the perfect Hell” with Demon Dean’s assistance, telling him they’re just “moving the party” and leaving Dean to contemplate this offer. Meanwhile, another hunter named Cole is after Dean, unaware of what’s he’s turned into. He kidnaps Sam in the process, as we lean that something went down between Cole and Dean many years ago and “now he’s prey, and I’m the monster,” according to Cole. He then phones Dean to demand a trade. However, he’s not about to to go save his sibling, instead just telling Cole that he’ll find him one day. And kill him very dead, of course. We cut back to Castiel for a minute as Hannah pays him a visit, seeking assistance with two rogue angels (Daniel and Adina) who murdered one of them own for trying to bring them home. Once this pair is found, Castiel kills Daniel to save Hannah’s life, while Adina escapes. Cas is left to wonder if he’s been on Earth for too long. “There’s seemingly nothing but chaos,” he says. And that applies to the Winchesters certainly, as Dean tells Cole after the latter threatens to kill Sam: “I told him to let me go, so any jam he’s in now, that is his problem… He knows damn sure that if I am one thing, I am a man of my word.” EEK! Bad Girls Club Season 13 Episode 1 Recap: Judi Needs More Than a Little Redemption

Bad Girls Club Season 13 Episode 1, the premiere of Bad Girls Club: Redemption, reassembled nine familiar faces from previous seasons of the hit show. You can only imagine how that turned out. Totally drama-free (not). No, Bad Girls Club Season 13 Episode 1 served as a fitting premiere to a season Oxygen has billed as “the best of the bad.” So bad, it can only be good. The cast members have been assembled to learn under the tutelage of Life Coach Laura, in a bid to control their tempers and reach their full potential. Watch Bad Girls Club Season 13 Episode 1 Online The BGC cast: Alyssa “Redd” Carswell, Camilla Poindexter, Danni Victor, Jada Looney, Judi Jackson, Julie Ofcharsky, Natalie Nunn, Sarah Oliver and Rocky Santiago. You can watch Bad Girls Club online to check out all their shenanigans, which we can’t really do justice to, but here’s a brief rundown on the premiere … Camilla wants to change for the better. Julie reflects how she was known on her season as the villain, but this time hopes to make lifelong friends. Judi just wants to get her DRANK on. Sarah regrets instigating so many fights during her season, while Redd also admits she was a bully during her season in Chicago, which also starred Jada. The two see that the other is there. No fists flying yet. Baby steps. Although they admit there may be drama down the line if one of them starts something with the other, so who knows. Here’s hoping it does not come to that. Also, Redd tells the girls she is gay, but will only look and not touch. So there’s that. Danni hopes to be more mature this time around, and Natalie? Well, Natalie is being all nice. It’s weird, but she looks ready to turn over the newest of new leaves as everyone goes outside and toasts to growing together and working on themselves. Perhaps headed to the club on a party bus wasn’t the smartest way to kick off the season, but that’s where we are, and the positive mood starts to unravel. Judi loses RIGHT on cue. Drunk Judi spills her drink on Danni, and finds living Natalie to be causing a lot of anxiety, which of course leads her to drink, and then she has beef with Julie. Back at the house, Judi continues to drink more, and says that everyone there is fake. Later, Redd confronts Judi about her psychological problems. Danni tells Judi that she’s acting like a “psycho three year old” and that “you and me are never going to be cool again,” as she kicks her out of the room. Redemption? Anything can happen in the morning, she notes. Here’s hoping, because things did not start off on the best foot for her here on day one.

New Girl Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: We Are All Micro

Jess tried to prove a point to the guys on New Girl Season 4 Episode 4, which is a recipe for comedic gold nine times out of 10 with this FOX comedy. Her goal? To prove that women are, collectively, less shallow than men. Her proof? She will date a less-than-perfect guy and she will love it! The problem? Said guy has a “micro” penis and is a general d-bag! Watch New Girl Season 4 Episode 4 Online When New Girl Season 4 Episode 4 kicks off, Jess gets annoyed at the guys, who are having a graphic and hilarious conversation about boobs at the bar. Her claims that she is not as shallow as they are quickly laughed off, then forgotten about as Nick points out her wonky knee. That is not structurally sound. Fleeing her friends, Jess meets a hunk named Matt, who seems like he would be the perfect guy until he reveals his “Micro” penis. It’s REALLY small. The guys, and likely more than a few people who watch New Girl online , immediately research what that means, and the jokes follow in rapid succession. Jess agrees to buy Nick a porn site subscription if she will date Matt for more than a month, while Nick will donate $500 to charity if he loses their bet. Unfortunately for Jess, she finds that Matt is quite dumb and not her type at all, regardless of what is going on (or barely even visible) below the belt. Meanwhile, Coach and Schmidt can’t stop thinking about “Micro” manhood. What results is a Classic Cece and Winston Thing as the latter asks if they ever thought about modeling. Come to think of it, that is totally Schmidt’s dream. Winston and Cece help Coach take photos at the apartment and Cece mentions that her agent is only looking for one male model, triggering a competition. Jess tells Nick she wants out of the bet for non “Micro” reasons. Nick refuses to believe that she doesn’t actually like him, but even he can’t avoid it when he meets the guy and Matt takes the hint before long as well. After she comes clean about why it’s not working, Matt explains his douche personality is a direct result bullying he’s received because of … well, you know.  As Jess comes over later to apologize and make her profound point about how we all have “Micro” flaws, they are interrupted … by his girlfriend. The girlfriend leaves. Good riddance, Matt says. She’s a little fat. After Jess finally lays eyes on the “Micro” penis, she leaves for good, while Coach bows out of his battle with Schmidt, realizing his real insecurities. Cece and Winston somehow manage to get a billboard up featuring Schmidt in Koreatown, realizing the ruse will only crush him more if it’s ever revealed. Coach asks when Schmidt gets is cut. Wintson is not happy.

NCIS Season 12 Episode 3 Recap: And So It Goes…

It took only 12 seasons, but NCIS finally delved into Ducky’s past on NCIS Season 12 Episode 3 . On an hour titled “So It Goes,” viewers watched as a body was found in a car registered to Ducky’s old best friend. Fortunately, the victim did NOT end up being this former pal. But, with his friend missing, Ducky ventured back to England as the team attempted to figure what happened. Watch NCIS Season 12 Episode 3 Online This helped us get to know Ducky even better than before, as we flashback to a younger version of the character (played impressively by lookalike Adam Campbell) and learned that Ducky and this former friend, Angus, had a falling out over a girl. In present day, the victim turns out to be one of Angus’ employees, prompting the NCIS unit to wonder if he was bringing files to Ducky since the car’s navigation system had the Navy Yard programmed into it. The actual Case of the Week wasn’t all that fascinating (even if it did involve a prostitution ring), but the in-depth look at Ducky made this installment stand out from most others. Among ironic jokes and tidbits we discovered from his past: A woman Ducky secretly pined after gave him a bow tie, which he hated immediately. In the old days, he spoke about wanting to get into obstetrics because he’d “had it up to here with cadavers,” adding: “If I never see another dead body again it’ll be too soon.” HA! At one point, David McCallum’s character saved both his own life and that of his former love, Maggie, via the precise use of a scalpel, a gift he’d been given a long time ago by his close friend and romantic rival. It was a pleasure to see Ducky remaining smug and confident even with his life seemingly on the line. This is a man who has never lost an ounce of coolness. We ended things with possible hope for Ducky to strike up a relationship with Maggie. Not yet, of course. She did just lose her husband and everything. But who out there would not want to see her make her way to The United States so Ducky could have a shot? What did you think of this installment? Pure Evil: ISIS Terrorists Behead British Aid Worker David Cameron Weeks After Killing Two American Journalists

When will the madness end?? ISIS Terrorists Behead British Aid Worker David Cameron ISIS released video Saturday evening that shows the beheading of David Cawthorne Haines, a British aid worker. Haines’ death comes just weeks after the execution of two American captives, James Foley and Steven Sotloff . Via Gawker reports: The gruesome video, first reported by the SITE Intelligence Group, is nearly identical to those showing Foley and Sotloff’s executions. The clip begins with Haines reading a statement blaming British Prime Minister David Cameron for his death. From the video’s transcript: My name is David Cawthorne Haines. I would like to declare that I hold you, David Cameron, entirely responsible for my execution. You entered voluntarily into a coalition with the United States against the Islamic State, just as you’re predecessor, Tony Blair, did. Following a trend amongst our British Prime Ministers who can’t find the courage to say no to the Americans. Unfortunately, it is we, the British public, that will in the end pay the price for our Parliaments selfish decisions. The executioner, apparently the same man who killed Sotloff and Foley, then reads a statement, calling Cameron an “obedient lapdog” who “will only drag you and your people into another bloody and unwinnable war,” and pulls a knife to Haines’ throat. The video then fades to black, before returning to show Haines’ severed head on top of his body. The video ends with the executioner threatening to kill a second British hostage, identified as Alen Henning: “If you, Cameron, persist in fighting the Islamic State, then you, like your master Obama, will have the blood of your people on your hands.” Cameron appeared to confirm the beheading later Saturday, calling it an “act of pure evil” in a statement. Haines was captured in a small Syrian village in March 2013 while working with a French group to deliver humanitarian aid. His abduction had been a secret until the publication of Sotloff’s execution video earlier this month. Haines is survived by his wife, Dragana, and two daughters. On Friday, his family released a statement directed at ISIS. “We are the family of David Haines,” the message said. “We have sent messages to you to which we have not received a reply. We are asking those holding David to make contact with us.”
