Do they deserve to die? Couple Accused Of Killing Girlfriend’s Mom In Bali Could Face Death Penalty The American couple arrested in Bali over the slaying of the woman’s mother, Sheila von Wiese-Mack may be charged with premeditated murder according to police in Indonesia. The charge carries a maxiumum penalty of death. According to AP reports: Heather Mack, 19, and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, both from Chicago, were arrested in Bali’s Kuta area Wednesday, a day after the body of Sheila von Wiese-Mack was found stuffed inside a suitcase in the trunk of a taxi parked in front of the upscale St. Regis Bali Resort in the island’s exclusive Nusa Dua section. An autopsy Saturday found that von Wiese-Mack, 62, died of asphyxiation from a broken nose bone resulting from a blunt blow, said Ida Bagus Putu Alit, head of forensics at Sanglah Hospital in Bali’s provincial capital of Denpasar. She also suffered from a broken neck, Alit said. Mack and Schaefer were charged with murder on Friday. Col. Djoko Hari Utomo, chief of police for Denpasar, said Saturday that police had enough evidence to charge them with premeditated murder. He reiterated that the couple was still refusing to talk to investigators without the presence of American lawyers. “But that does not hamper our investigation. We have enough evidence, including CCTV and fingerprints,” Utomo said. “And I am inclined to charge them with premeditated murder.” An FBI agent arrived Friday to help with the investigation, including on the couple’s possible involvement in criminal activity in the United States, Utomo said. In the meantime there are unconfirmed reports that Heather Mack is claiming she’s pregnant… Would that help her case? Pregnant or not, the results of the autopsy are pretty revealing: The autopsy found that breaks in von Wiese-Mack’s neck and nose extended to her upper right and left jaws, causing respiratory disorders, Alit said. It also showed hand wounds suggesting she was trying to fend off an attack. “We also found blood aspiration, which meant the victim was standing when assaulted,” Alit said. “The conclusion is that the victim suffocated from lack of oxygen because of influx of blood from the broken nose bone.” Alit said von Wiese-Mack was believed to have died Tuesday morning. “The victim was last spotted on CCTV at 3:45 a.m. (Tuesday), and three hours later she called receptionists asking to wake her up at 10 a.m.,” Alit said. “However, she did not respond when awakened.” Meanwhile, Bali’s deputy police chief, Brig. Gen. Gusti Ngurah Raharja Subyakta, said psychological tests showed that there were no psychiatric disorders with the couple. So no claiming insanity for these two. Do you think they’ll end up dying in Indonesia? Ironically, we recently learned that Heather’s dad was a noted classical and jazz composer who also died at a hotel abroad. James Mack, who was also the director of music at Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago, was 76 when he died in Greece in 2006 — also at a hotel, while on vacation. Could we have two Black presidents in a row? Dr. Ben Carson A Potential Presidential Candidate Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and conservative political figure, just might be a contender for the 2016 Presidential race. Apparently Dr. Carson wowed a conservative crowd at a Republican Club meeting recently and they fervently urged him to put his bid in. Via PageSix : We’re two years away from the next election for President of the United States, but the race is already heating up. Among the contenders: Dr. Ben Carson, who gave it good to President Obama at last year’s National Prayer Breakfast — and who had more digs for the commander in chief last Wednesday at the Women’s National Republican Club on West 51st Street. “People say to me, ‘Dr. Carson, you’d make a great president, but Obama has ruined it for another black candidate.’ I say, ‘He’s half-white, so I guess he ruined it for them, too.’ ” Carson, who retired as director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital, gave a speech, answered questions from a crowd of about 300 and signed copies of his sixth book, “One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future.” “A PBS reporter asked me, ‘How come you don’t talk more about race?’ I said, ‘Because I’m a neurosurgeon. When I open up a patient’s skull, I’m working on what makes him or her a human being — not his skin. ’” Carson also had quips on several other subjects, including legalizing marijuana (“Data show it reduces IQ. We have enough stupid people. We don’t need to create more of them.”) and unions (“They will strangle the goose that lays the golden egg for that last egg.”). The partisan crowd was hanging on every word, and urging Carson to run for president. Well he certainly seems to pander well to Republican views. Do you think he has a chance?
Photo: Instagram Hate speech disguised as “Southern Pride?” Is The Confederate Flag As Hateful As The Swastika? Confederate flags flew as the South fought in defense of slavery, while Swastikas were the symbol of the Third Reich as they terrorized Jews in Germany. Do you think the flags are equal in the shameful bits of history they represent? Many Southerners (of many races) fly the flag in their yards, on their cars, or rock in on their clothing as a “symbol of their history.” But are they sending a racist message regardless of what they say their intention is? Peep this writer’s take on the flag as a hate symbol. Via WashingtonPost : Hubert Wayne Cash, 65, a Navy veteran and retired phone company worker, spent an hour at his home Tuesday explaining why he allowed the recent erection of a giant Confederate battle flag in his wooded back yard north of Fredericksburg overlooking busy Interstate 95. “I’ve got 50 ancestors who fought in the Civil War,” Cash said. “I honor their heritage.” The gray-bearded Cash was gracious and thoughtful. I applaud his willingness to answer skeptical questions from an incorrigibly pro-Yankee news columnist. But I still think Cash and his allies are wrong to display the flag. It’s the principal emblem today of a hateful cause — the protection of slavery — from which it cannot be divorced. Germans don’t use Nazi swastika flags to honor their dead from World War II. The same logic applies to the Confederacy, even if the Nazis’ sins were worse than those of Jefferson Davis and company. Of course, the United States can’t ban the Rebel banner outright, as German law prohibits the display of swastikas. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech. But the public can and should try to shame the Confederacy fan club into scrapping the emblem of a wicked purpose and leaving it to be displayed only in museums and history books. There are plenty of other ways to commemorate one’s Rebel ancestors. What about plaques, flowers or the Virginia state flag? The Confederacy was big on states’ rights. Here’s my main complaint about the flaggers, which Cash did little to dispel: Like many in the “Southern heritage” movement, they aren’t just committed to honoring individual Rebel soldiers. They insist also on trying to whitewash the Confederacy by saying the Civil War was about something other than slavery. Do you automatically assume those who fly the flag do so with racist intentions? Or…is there a way for Southerners to display the flag as a part of their heritage — separate from it’s association with slavery?
Finally…an honest lottery winner! Single Mother Wins $66 Million Jackpot Rather than telling the media she planned to keep working, pay of debts and all that common chatter…she told the truth and let everyone know she plans to BALL OUT. Via MailOnline : A 24-year-old single mother in Mt Clemens, Michigan has become America’s newest millionaire after turning in her winning $66million lottery ticket. On Thursday, Kelsey Zachow spoke about her win at a press conference, and later posed with her check and 7-month-old baby boy Benjamin. At the press conference, Zachow talked about how she plans to spend her winnings and how she went more than a week without knowing about the valuable Mega Millions lottery ticket tucked in her purse. Zachow says she has been buying lottery tickets two times a week for the past five years, spending an estimated $10,000 on tickets. She has since quit her two jobs as a bartender and medical assistant, which she previously worked to support her son and also her boyfriend and his 5-year-old daughter Evelyn. [Her boyfriend] has been laid off from his job in construction for about a year. Zachow says she first plans to spend her money buying a new SUV, perhaps a Jeep, and then a electric blue Mustang GTR convertible with dual exhaust and leather seats. She also wants to but the house of her dreams in the St. Clair area. Some place with acreage where she might one day be able to open a no-kill animal shelter. From there, she plans to treat herself to vacations in Europe, the Caribbean and Ireland – where most of her boyfriend’s family are from. The money will also go to pay the college tuition for her son, boyfriend’s daughter, and her 2-year-old little brother Gus Schmidlin. Zachow’s winnings were the largest ever won by a Michigan lottery player on a Friday the 13th. With $66 million in the bank, we bet it’s safe to say her unemployed boyfriend/babydaddy will make an honest woman out of her soon!
Do you agree? Education Expert Breaks Down Notion Of Black Parents Indifferent To Education We’ve all heard (and sometimes regurgitated) the idea that a child’s academic achievement starts with the parents. One Urban Education professor stresses that there are many other factors to consider before just assuming that if a Black child underachieves, his or her parents are probably lazy and don’t put value on grades and higher learning. From Andre M. Perry for WashingtonPost : Mayors, teachers unions, and news commentators have boiled down the academic achievement gap between white and black students to one root cause: parents. Even black leaders and barbershop chatter target “lazy parents” for academic failure in their communities, dismissing the complex web of obstacles that assault urban students daily. In 2011, then-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg exemplified this thinking by saying, “Unfortunately, there are some parents who…never had a formal education and they don’t understand the value of an education.” Earlier this year, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Tony Norman diagnosed that city’s public schools’ chief problem: the lack of “active, radical involvement of every parent.” And even President Obama rued last week that in some black communities, gaining education is viewed as “acting white.” Clearly, there is widespread belief that black parents don’t value education. The default opinion has become “it’s the parents” — not the governance, the curriculum, the instruction, the policy, nor the lack of resources — that create problems in urban schools. That’s wrong. Everyday actions continuously contradict the idea that low-income black families don’t care about their children’s schooling, with parents battling against limited resources to access better educations than their circumstances would otherwise afford their children. Research backs up the anecdotal evidence. Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research recently found that African Americans are most likely to value a post-secondary education in becoming successful, at 90 percent , followed by Asians and Latinos. Whites, at 64 percent, were least likely to believe higher education is necessary for success. When judging black families’ commitment to education, many are confusing will with way. These parents have the will to provide quality schooling for their children, but often, they lack the way: the social capital, the money and the access to elite institutions. There is a difference between valuing an education and having the resources to tap that value. A study released this month found 26 percent of ACT-tested students were college-ready in all four subject areas. Among low-income students, college-readiness dropped to just 11 percent. The study determined that it was poverty, not motivation or attitudes, that contributed to the lower performance. “Nearly all ACT-tested students from low-income families in the United States aspire to go to college — at an even higher rate than students overall — but many lack the academic preparation to reach this goal,” the ACT noted. So the problem seems to be far more socioeconomic than racial…but we live in a nation that associates “poor” with “Black/brown.” What are your thoughts?
