Everything Is Racist Now!: Coke Super Bowl Ad Said To Be Racist By Arab-Americans! [Video]

Is this commercial racist, or is everything racist nowadays? NBC Reports: Arab-American groups have sharply criticized a Coca-Cola Super Bowl ad depicting an Arab walking through the desert with a camel, and one group said it would ask the beverage giant to change it before CBS airs the game on Sunday before an expected audience of more than 100 million U.S. viewers. “Why is it that Arabs are always shown as either oil-rich sheiks, terrorists, or belly dancers?” said Warren David, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, or ADC. Coca-Cola released an online teaser of the commercial last week, showing the Arab walking through a desert. He soon sees cowboys, Las Vegas showgirls and a motley crew fashioned after the marauders of the apocalyptic “Mad Max” film race by him to reach a gigantic bottle of Coke. In its ad, Coke asks viewers to vote online on which characters should win the race. The online site does not allow a vote for the Arab character. “The Coke commercial for the Super Ball is racist, portraying Arabs as backward and foolish Camel Jockeys, and they have no chance to win in the world,” Imam Ali Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Institute for Interfaith Studies, said in an email. “What message is Coke sending with this?” asked Abed Ayoub, ADC’s director of legal and policy affairs. “By not including the Arab in the race, it is clear that the Arab is held to a different standard when compared to the other characters in the commercial,” he said. CBS declined comment. Coca-Cola spokeswoman Lauren Thompson said Coke took a “cinematic” approach with the ad, employing the characters as a nod to movies of the past. “Coca-Cola is an inclusive brand enjoyed by all demographics,” she said in an email. “We illustrate our core values, from fun and refreshment to happiness, inspiration and optimism across all of our marketing communications.” Ayoub said ADC intended to contact Coke and CBS Corp on Thursday to “hopefully start a dialog.” “I want to know why this happened and how can we fix this if possible before Sunday,” he said. The ADC garnered attention back in 1992 when it complained that lyrics in the Walt Disney animated film “Aladdin” were racist. Ronald Goodstein, professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, said he was surprised by the image as well. “If Coke’s vision is to be an arm’s distance away from every customer, why would they want to offend the Arab world?” said Goodstein. Ayoub said the commercial could harm Coke’s business with the Arab community. “Coke should understand and respect their consumers and have a better understanding of the market they are sharing,” he Ayoub. The company has a large market share in the Middle East and North Africa, he noted, and many convenience stores and other retail outlets in the United States that offer Coke are owned by Arab-Americans. It’s A Dirty Game: Lance Armstrong Planned To Use Testicular Cancer As “Card To Play” If Questioned Over Doping

The balls on this guy! Lance Armstrong plotted to use his cancer diagnosis as a defense if he was ever questioned about using steroids! Via NYDailyNews reports : A former teammate of Lance Armstrong testified in a sworn affidavit that Armstrong planned to use his testicular cancer as his “card to play” if his doping sins ever caught up with him, according to a source. Jonathan Vaughters, Armstrong’s U.S. Postal teammate, said in his affidavit that Armstrong blamed the spread of his cancer on the fact that the International Cycling Union (UCI), the sport’s governing body, didn’t detect high levels of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin in Armstrong’s body when it tested the cyclist. The drug, known as hCG, is taken by males who are steroid users to boost their natural testosterone levels and prevent testicular atrophy. According to a Daily Mail report, which printed portions of Vaughters’ affidavit, Vaughters said that during a U.S. Postal training camp, “I had a conversation with Lance in which he told me that the UCI should have detected a high level of hCG in his doping controls when he had cancer but failed to do so . . . Lance said, ‘If I ever have a doping problem, I have this card to play.’ ” Last week, Armstrong admitted to doping during his two-part interview with Oprah Winfrey, and said the PEDs were behind his seven Tour de France victories, titles which have since been stripped from him by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. USADA’s reasoned decision on Armstrong, released last year, includes information from numerous affidavits from his former teammates. Armstrong told Winfrey that he did not think PEDs were responsible for his cancer, which he was diagnosed with and battled before his Tour victories. This guy truly ain’t isht! Just think about all those people fighting cancer who thought this guy was a hero, when he was actually a zero! SplashNews

‘The Last Stand’ Director Kim Jee-Woon On Arnold’s Age And His ‘Jin-Roh’ Adaptation

Arnold Schwarzenegger warned us he’d be back, but the ex-Governator’s big action comeback as a small-town border sheriff in The Last Stand fizzled over the weekend with a tenth-place box office finish. Shame, because The Last Stand also marks a milestone for director Kim Jee-Woon, who makes his English-language debut with the tongue-in-cheek contemporary Western after building an eclectic resume in his native Korea including the horror pic A Tale of Two Sisters , the Eastern-Western The Good, The Bad, And The Weird , and the crossover thriller I Saw The Devil . Movieline spoke with Kim (via interpreter) about dipping his toes into Hollywood and his plans to put a Korean twist on Inrang , his upcoming adaptation of the anime Jin-Roh: Wolf Brigade . Despite the language barrier your creative stamp is evident here, especially in your set pieces – but why make your Hollywood debut with an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie like The Last Stand ? After my film The Tale of Two Sisters I received a lot of offers from Hollywood to direct, but because A Tale of Two Sisters was a horror film I received a lot of horror films. But I wasn’t interested in working in the same genre, and the scripts I received for films in different genres were for projects that were near completion. To participate in those I felt a little rushed, but with The Last Stand I not only had the opportunity to work with Arnold, it was in the early stages of development so I was able to take my time to mold the script and the story and characters. The Last Stand is a contemporary Western, and with The Good, The Bad, and The Weird you crafted an ode to the genre. How did you want to filter the Western film through your unique perspective in The Last Stand ? The Western is as American as a film can get – there’s the discovery of a frontier, the element of a showdown, revenge, and determining the best gunman. There’s a certain masculinity to the Western that really appealed to me and I’ve always wanted to do a Western in Hollywood. But it wasn’t just about action; rather, it was about good vs. evil and the story of a certain character defending a certain value, defending justice. I feel that with The Last Stand I was able to put a modern twist to it and add a new flavor to the genre. You were a big fan of Arnold in Last Action Hero , which was a great vehicle for him – it allowed him to embrace his action hero status with a sense of self-awareness. Your film also has that spirit: It is his potential comeback after years away from the screen, and Arnold constantly acknowledges his age. How did you approach directing “Arnold Schwarzenegger” the returning action legend? I’m a big fan of Last Action Hero and also Terminator and True Lies , and directing this film was sort of like being in Last Action Hero – I was the little boy in that film. Just to be directing a huge action star was like being in that movie. In that film the little boy says, ‘My hero can’t do this, my hero can’t be like that,’ and there were certain limitations I wanted to put on Arnold as a hero. The perfect limitation was his age and fatigue, but I wanted to show Arnold overcoming these limitations to take part in the biggest battle, the biggest struggle of his life. I talked about it the first time I met Arnold. A lot of people remember him as the Terminator but I wanted to portray him as a weary hero – I thought it would allow for a deeper connection with the audience. When I first met Arnold I was concerned about mentioning his age, but Arnold actually brought it up first – he said he wanted to act his age. I realized Arnold’s insight and wisdom. You’ve said you might return to make another American film next – what can you share about that and your immediate future plans? I’m working on a feature length film in Korea and will be finishing that up this year. That would be your adaptation of the anime Jin-Roh , correct? I’m preparing that but modifying the story to fit into the Korean setting [from the original Japanese setting]. Then I’ll be back in the United States early next year and there are two projects I’m considering. What’s the greatest lesson you learned about how filming in America differs from making movies in Korea? The biggest thing that I’ve learned in Hollywood is the process of execution. In Korea, how I used to work is I would have a vague idea, process that idea, and work with that idea [as I was filming], but here I realized that every crew member and every person involved needs clear vision and clear directions. Through that I’ve learned to bring out a clear idea from within myself. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Hi Hater: Babbling Bigot Ted Nugent Says President Obama Is ‘An Evil Dangerous Man Who Hates America And Hates Freedom’

Ted Nugent Says President Obama Hates America And Hates Freedom Gun activist and resident radical rambler Ted Nugent is known for making out-of-pocket statements aimed at President Obam a, and it doesn’t sound like he’ll be slowing his roll any time soon. via Huffington Post Rocker-turned-gun rights provocateur Ted Nugent is willing to say just about anything to attack President Barack Obama and his administration for what he believes is an imminent effort by the government to snatch up guns. During a recent interview, Nugent again raised the bar, invoking a Revolutionary war milestone to suggest that he and his “buddies” were prepared to fight such an effort at all costs. “I’m part of a very great experiment in self-government where we the people determine our own pursuit of happiness and our own individual freedom and liberty, not to be confused with the Barack Obama gang who believes in we the sheeple and actually is attempting to re-implement the tyranny of King George that we escaped from in 1776,” Nugent said in a recent interview with Guns.com at the NBC-sponsored Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show. “And if you want another Concord Bridge, I got some buddies.” Nugent appears to be referring to the beginning of the Revolutionary war, when colonial and British troops assembled at the North Bridge in Concord, Mass. in 1775 broke a standoff when one soldier opened fire. “The president of the United States goes to the Vietnam Memorial Wall and pretends to honor 58,000 American heroes who died fighting communism and then he hires, appoints and associates with communists,” Nugent said. “He pretends to pay honor to men who died fighting communism, and then he hangs out with, hires and appoints communists. He is an evil, dangerous man who hates America and hates freedom. And we need to fix this as soon as possible.” Call us crazy but, these sound more like threats than empty talk. Teddy better quit talkin’ that talk before the POTUS and First Lady Shelly O go south side Chi-town on him…

Protect Ya Neck! 18 Severed Human Heads Discovered In Package At Chicago O’Hare Airport

WHAT THE HELL ??! 18 Human Heads Found At Chicago Airport Via Fox News and Chicago Sun Times reports: The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Monday night that it had received 18 human specimens that were found at O’Hare International Airport on Monday. Sources said the specimens are human heads, still covered in skin and wrapped in plastic. Sources tell FOX 32 News that they came from Italy, and may have been sent to be used for some kind of scientific research or a medical experiment. Authorities said no foul play was suspected. U.S. Customs and Border Protection were investigating but declined to comment Monday night. The 18 human heads that arrived at O’Hare International Airport just before Christmas — and remained there until this week — now appear to be on the last leg of their final journey. The medical specimens had been in limbo since just before Christmas, when they arrived on a flight from Rome and were held up due to improper paperwork, said Mary Paleologos, a spokeswoman with the Cook County medical examiner’s office, whose office took custody of the heads this week. “Now the cremation service has showed up with the proper paperwork,” Paleologos said. “The medical examiner’s office will photograph and X-ray each of the heads” before they are released. The heads were originally shipped from the United States to Rome for medical research, and were then shipped back again to be cremated, Paleologos said. She said she doesn’t know the name of the cremation service or where the heads began their journey in the United States. There are 18 headless torsos somewhere filing lost luggage complaints…

Michael Richard Landers’ Wife Defends Abductors, Says They "Made Him the Man He is"

The pregnant wife of Michael Richard Landers, abducted in 1994 but found this January, is speaking out in defense of his abductors (his grandparents). She says they “made him the man he is, my husband and best friend.” They’re still close, too … literally. The couple lives next door to them! Yes, the grandparents who ran away with Landers, now 24, when he was only 5 years old are getting support from the woman he grew up to marry. Michael’s wife, Bobbie Landers, declared in an emotional Facebook post, “His ‘grandparents’ didn’t follow the law, but they did what was right .” “Sometimes, United States laws don’t help or protect the people they should. He was five. He remembers his birth parents and what they were like.” “He had been [under their care] since he was a 6 month old baby. He was where he wanted and needed to be to be safe and become the man he is today.” “My husband and best friend.” Michael, then known by his real name, Richard Wayne Landers Jr., and Bobbie are expecting their first child; she has two sons from a previous relationship. Landers’ grandparents, living in a nearby Minnesota town under an alias, recently confirmed the identity of the child they stole so many years ago. According to the police, they abducted him in July 1994 because they were “upset over pending court proceedings” regarding the boy’s placement. They were charged with “interference,” but that count was dismissed in 2008 after the case went cold. However, it was reopened in September. The boy’s mother and stepfather were apparently “jumping up and down for joy” when investigators said he had been found; it’s unclear if they have reunited.

After Golden Globes Win, Is ‘Argo’ The People’s Film?

Last night’s Golden Globes cemented Argo as the People’s Film from an awards season stand-point, setting the scrappy underdog to stand toe-to-toe with the monolithic Lincoln . Theoretically, the “People’s Film” would be The Hunger Games , which won Favorite Movie at the People’s Choice Awards, but in the context of the Oscars, the populism is relative to the awards — and none of the elite awards are more populist than the Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association established the annual Golden Globes as an opportunity to gather Hollywood’s elite, and the awards create the appearance of a competitive event instead of simply another gala. The goal is TV revenue, ostensibly to fund the HFPA’s philanthropic endeavors. The voting is dubious, with a body of less than 100 journalists with a penchant for press junkets that hinge on the interviewee’s charisma and charm. This is why the Globes live up to their reputation of grinning, drunken swagger: they can be loose and fun, because at the end of the day, it’s not about the awards, it’s about the audience. So the HFPA awarded Argo the title of Best Motion Picture – Drama, as well as giving Ben Affleck the award for Best Director — something he cannot replicate at the Oscars, where he’s not nominated for Best Director. But the narrative is shifting in Argo ’s direction. The film has always been a contender. With just three directed films and a severe image challenge as a personality, actor-turned-director Affleck has reconfigured himself as a filmmaker who demands respect. The fictionalized true story behind Argo , tying a Middle Eastern thriller to Hollywood in-jokes, was always the sort of smart film audiences could embrace. The box office reflected this, earning more than $111 million in the United States (ignoring a probable post-Globe, pre-Oscar rerelease), which is less than Lincoln to date but still nothing to scoff at for an R-rated political thriller. Along the way, Argo has quietly been picking up awards from various critics groups. It was one of the AFI Films of the Year and made the National Board of Review’s Top Films list. It won ensemble awards from the Hollywood Film Festival and Palm Springs International Film Festial, took the top prize from the San Diego critics and took 2nd place from the New York critics. This past week, it scored a major win at the Critics’ Choice Awards, taking Best Picture and Best Director on the same day the AMPAS directing wing blocked Affleck out. Like the Globes, the Critics’ Choice flexed the populism muscle, despite the assumed prestige from an umbrella group of critics. The Critics’ Choice tried something new this year by being broadcast on the CW, awkwardly combining the general intelligence of film critics with the popcorn atmosphere of the network. The organization received flack for poor decisions such as cutting away from the screenplay award (which went to Lincoln ‘s Tony Kushner) and for focusing on less prestigious nominees in favor of name recognition. What all of this amounts to, however, is a critics award that was aiming for Golden Globe-style populism. Argo winning both Critics’ Choice and the Golden Globe for Best Drama has set its tone and changed the popular conversation, commanding awards-watchers to take the film seriously again after losing momentum earlier in the season thanks to the thunder-stealing Zero Dark Thirty . What remains to be seen are the results of the Screen Actors Guild and the BAFTAs . Argo has received ensemble attention, so SAG’s big award isn’t out of the realm of possibility, but Argo has not received the individual acting attention that Les Miserables , Silver Linings Playbook , or even Lincoln have. This makes SAG the biggest landmark on Argo ’s horizon, because a win there would solidify the film’s narrative as the People’s Film, and the one that people want to win it all. Chime in below with your Oscar musings: With all this populist momentum, does Argo have a shot at Best Picture? Texas Teachers With Guns? Rick Perry Expresses Support in CT Shooting Aftermath

Texas teachers could be armed with guns themselves following Friday’s stunning Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The state’s governor, Rick Perry, has expressed support – at least for allowing districts to determine whether their teachers can carry concealed weapons. It has also been reported that one Texas district already permits teachers to pack concealed handguns in class; Perry says he is open to expanding the idea. Perry told the NE Tarrant County Tea Party on Monday evening: “In the state of Texas, if you go through the process, have been trained, and you are a handgun-licensed individual, you should be able to carry a gun anywhere in the state.” In addition, Virginia Gov. McDonnell said Tuesday, “I know there’s been a knee-jerk reaction against that [but] I think there should at least be a discussion of that.” “If people were armed, not just a police officer but other school officials … certainly there would be an opportunity to stop aggressors coming into the schools.” “So I think that’s a reasonable discussion that ought to be had,” he added. Virginia and Colorado have already seen gun sales spike this week. In the Harrold Independent School District in Texas, a policy was already implemented in 2007 that allows teachers to carry concealed handguns in schools. Harrold superintendent, David Thweatt, has said “We’re a rural community. We’re in a county about a little smaller than the state of Rhode of island.” “We’re 30 minutes from law enforcement. Thirty minutes is an extremely long time.” In Connecticut last week, 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot his mother dead, then drove to the nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. He broke his way in before murdering 20 children as well as six adults in the school. After the slaughter, Lanza turned the gun on himself and shot himself dead. It was one of the worst high school massacre shootings in United States history and has sparked a wide debate on gun control and regulations in America. What do you think: Should teachers be allowed to carry guns?   Yes, it could actually prevent violence! No, that would be utter insanity … View Poll »
