This Old Trout Needs To Keep Michelle Obama’s Name Out Of Her Mouth

Joan Rivers is still talking yang yang about our beloved FLOTUS, Michelle Obama: “We’ve bonded. We have bonded over shitty phone service all over the United States,” Joan Rivers remarked to us on Friday, after a few frustrating rounds of phone tag, thanks to AT&T and some botched lines. But “Can you hear me now?” aside, the comedienne is totally impossible to catch up with, anyway. As of late, she’s been making the media rounds, promoting her new reality show for We TV and sounding off on a variety of subjects all along the way. Check out what Joan had to say to HuffPost Style about Michelle Obama’s State Dinner dress, Tiger Mom and how she got into the fashion commenting business to begin with. HP: One thing that has been making headlines in the fashion world this week is Michelle Obama wearing McQueen to the State Dinner. JR: Wrong. Wrong. Sorry! Sorry, sorry, sorry, but we’re pushing America and we’re so behind in everything that we’re doing. We’re trying to push our own industries, the president’s coming out and saying we’ve got to make more American stuff, you know what, darling? Buy American. Wrong. I like the Obamas, I voted for Obama, but totally wrong. Very badly advised. It was like Jackie Onassis used to sneak the French couture into the White House. At least she had the decency to have Oleg Cassini copy it. So she would say, I’m wearing Oleg Cassini when in reality, he had just copied a lot of the fashions. HP: Do you think there are occasions when the first lady could wear a foreign designer? JR: In private, God bless her, she can wear what she wants. When she’s sitting around with just their friends or if [Obama]‘s not re-elected, or even if he is re-elected, she’ll have all those years ahead of her to wear what she wants. HP: Shifting gears, you’re on a reality show now with your daughter. What do you think of Tiger Mom? JR: I adore the Tiger Mom. I think a child should be strapped to the piano. The only thing is, she says, “This is the success,” and I don’t want to break her heart but if every child learns to play the piano or becomes a pianist or a violinist, how many are in each orchestra? You’re setting your children up to fail, you idiot. There’s one pianist per orchestra. So if you’re strapping your kid to the piano, you’re making your kid fail if he thinks he’s going to be a pianist. And if you’re strapping your kid…how many violinists? There’s a first violin, second violin, maybe a small string section. So unfortunately, poor Tiger Mom got it a little screwed up. I think she should strap them to the computer. Or let them make clothes for Michelle Obama. I think Tiger Mom should have all the kids in America designing clothes for Michelle Obama so she wouldn’t have to buy outside of our coasts. Katy Perry Reveals Tour Will Have ‘Smell-O-Vision’

‘I’m definitely bringing the pizzazz with a lot of bells and whistles,’ the singer says about her upcoming California Dreams trek. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic She just released the artwork for new single “E.T.” and now Katy Perry is dishing on her upcoming California Dreams Tour . In a chat with Rolling Stone , the pop starlet admits that she really has to bring it in order to compete with the high touring standards of fellow stars such as Lady Gaga and Pink. “I just really want to raise the bar,” she says, adding that she’s working with Pink’s touring director. “Touring is no longer an ordinary thing where you play an instrument in jeans and a T-shirt. It has some pizzazz these days, and I’m definitely bringing the pizzazz with a lot of bells and whistles. The show has a Broadway feel to it. It’s got a story line that’s going to be very interesting — kind of loosely based on my life, but a cartoon version.” For her tour, Perry’s got some tricks up her sleeve in the form of Smell-O-Vision. “It’s the first concert that’s going to smell good,” she reveals. “It’s going to smell like you’re in cotton candy heaven. It’s a fun little nuance. I am a woman of detail, and you will be seeing that — even down to the 15 outfit changes I’m doing in concert.” The singer also is seeking inspiration from artist pals like Will Cotton, who worked with Perry on her “California Gurls” video and Teenage Dream art , and Mark Ryden. “I have this whole thing in my show that is about candy and cupcakes and meat,” Perry explains. “It’s both really sweet and shocking, but not in a sexual way.” Perry adds that, unlike her previous tour, she plans to take in the sights around the world while on the road. Perry has been busy tweeting up a storm about her California Dreams Tour, which kicks off next month. “Cotton Candy angel is working up a treat you’ll NEVER forget for GRAMMYS & TOUR!” she wrote earlier this week about what is sure to be one fine-smelling spectacle. The California Dreams Tour kicks off February 20 in Lisbon, Portugal, and will touch down in the United States in June. Are you excited to see Katy on her California Dreams Tour? Kush Chronicles: Most Popular Youtube Town Hall Meeting Questions For President Barack Obama Are About Marijuana

F*ck everything else, the citizens of the United States of America want answers about when that “yah-mean” is about to be legalized: President Barack Obama plans to take questions from YouTube viewers Thursday afternoon, and for the third time in as many years, the overwhelmingly most popular query involves the legalization of marijuana. Of the top 100 most popular questions as rated by YouTube users, 99 are about the drug war or pot. Of the next one hundred, 99 are again about drug policy. Somehow, two questions about clean energy made their way into the top 200. The pot questions don’t stop there, but HuffPost stopped counting deep into the 200s, as the president is unlikely to answer all of them. If past history is any guide, he may not answer any of them. A White House spokesman tells HuffPost that the president on Thursday will answer whatever questions YouTube puts before him. “A selection of top voted questions has been made to insure that as many of the most important questions as voted by the YouTube community will be asked,” a YouTube spokesperson told HuffPost. Obama did answer the question in 2009, addressing folks who asked if the president would consider legalizing marijuana to boost the economy and tax revenue. “Can I just interrupt, Jared, before you ask the next question, just to say that we — we took votes about which questions were going to be asked and I think 3 million people voted,” he said to aide Jared Bernstein. “I have to say that there was one question that was voted on that ranked fairly high and that was whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy — (laughter) — and job creation. And I don’t know what this says about the online audience — (laughter) — but I just want — I don’t want people to think that — this was a fairly popular question; we want to make sure that it was answered. The answer is, no, I don’t think that is a good strategy — (laughter) — to grow our economy in 2009.” That answer tortured legalization backers as much as being ignored, if this year’s questions are an indication. Many of them knock the president for laughing at their issue. SMH. Source

Michael Jackson’s ‘Moonwalker’ To Get U.S. Theater Debut?

A Hollywood cinema is searching for a print of MJ’s 1988 film with plans to give it a ‘one night only’ screening. By James Montgomery Michael Jackson’s “Moonwalker” Photo: Warner Bros. Michael Jackson’s short-film anthology “Moonwalker” may finally get a debut theatrical screening in the United States more than 20 years after it was released. Back in 1988, MJ first unveiled the ambitious project, which contained several long-form videos for songs off his then-just-released Bad album, including his famous 25-minute clip for “Smooth Criminal.” The film had been scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters that Christmas, but for whatever reason, that plan was scrapped. The movie was released on VHS early in 1989, and — surprise, surprise — became a massive success. But now, more than two decades after its debut, one theater is planning to give “Moonwalker” a proper premiere here in the States. According to TMZ , Hollywood’s Arclight Cinemas is actively searching for a print of the film, with plans to show it on the big screen … for one night only. The idea came after Jackson fans flooded Arclight’s Facebook page with requests to show “Moonwalker,” and the theater is now on the hunt for a copy of the flick. Even if the search is successful, there’s no word on when the premiere would occur. The theater had not responded to MTV News’ e-mail seeking a comment by press time. “Moonwalker” features videos for Jackson tracks like “Speed Demon” (directed by Claymation innovator Will Vinton), “Leave Me Alone” (which was released as a promo and won Jackson a 1989 Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form) and, as mentioned, the iconic “Criminal,” which features Jackson battling a group of mobsters led by Joe Pesci. The flick also served as the inspiration for the super-awesome Sega game “Moonwalker, which featured a digital MJ morphing into a laser-blasting robot with the aid of his chimpanzee pal, Bubbles. Martin Luther King’s Legacy Recalled By DJ Khaled, Bun B, Saigon

‘We should take every day and praise what King did for us,’ Khaled says of civil-rights fighter. By By Mawuse Ziegbe, with additional reporting by Hillary Crosley DJ Khaled Photo: Ben Rose/ Getty Images Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s tireless crusade for civil rights is synonymous with the social upheaval and progressive change of the 1960s. He’s since become a global icon and figurehead of a revolutionary movement, and even though he is no longer with us, his game-changing legacy is still strongly felt — especially in the hip-hop community. In celebration of Martin Luther King Day, MTV News reached out to a few rap names who reflected on Dr. King’s lasting impact on today’s stars, both personally and professionally. “Martin Luther King is definitely one of my heroes,” Brooklyn MC Saigon said. “He was a black leader and he took the road and responsibility to step up and do what a lot of us other men didn’t have the courage to do. It took a lot of courage to do what he did at a time when racism was very relevant. As he did lose his life, he knew there was a good chance he would lose his life taking the stand he took. He epitomizes standing for something — he’s the epitome of that.” Saigon, who name-drops MLK in his recently released single “Clap,” added that Dr. King’s efforts continue to inspire him as a rapper and, as he maintained, a de facto role model for today’s youth due to his public profile as a hip-hop artist. “That record is just an uplifting record. It’s trying to carry on what he left off, because he died untimely but he left enough for us to carry the torch,” he explained. “I think that’s what a lot of those leaders did. Rappers are the new leaders, so I think we should come in that same vein and still be about the growth and the development of our people and our community.” UGK O.G. Bun B noted that he may feel closer to Dr. King’s struggle since he’s “probably a couple years older than the average MC.” He maintained that much of America’s race-relations progress is intrinsically linked to the late leader’s fight. “I remember in my generation and the generation before me, the dream being that one day, being a black man, that no doors would be closed to you in this country and in this world. I’ve been around long enough to see that almost every door in this world has actually opened up, all the way up to the most powerful man in the world, the President of the United States,” he said of the country’s first African-American commander in chief, Barack Obama. “There are many achievements that Martin Luther King really would be very happy to see … but at the same time I still think we have ground to cover in this country.” Bun added that Dr. King’s work has also helped to foster an inclusive society, which prompts MCs to create music that anyone can relate to. “We do shows nowadays in not just the inner-city community but in every community, and we see people of every color and all walks of life at our concerts now. That’s due to the fact that we try to make music that invites everybody to be a part of the movement,” he explained. “You don’t have to be black to be ‘trill.’ ” Miami’s DJ Khaled also said that he strives to reflect the harmonious spirit Dr. King’s work engendered — especially in his star-studded posse cuts that can corral everyone from Usher to Plies on one track. “I celebrate [MLK Day] by giving respect and just reminding people [about] the word ‘peace’ and the word ‘love’ and unity ’cause, you know, that’s what I represent,” he said. “I love bringing people together with my records. That’s why you get sometimes these collaborations that you’ve never seen before come together on a Khaled record ’cause they just got ultimate respect for what I do. Martin Luther King is a person that I respect, that we respect, everybody respects.” Khaled added that upholding Dr. King’s legacy shouldn’t be a one-day event, but rather an effort that people should incorporate into their everyday lives. “I think we should take every day and praise and look at what Martin Luther King did for us, for us to be on this Skype right now and kick it, multicultures and just vibe,” he said. “It’s beautiful, so shout-out to MLK, everybody that support Martin Luther King, and R.I.P. to Martin Luther King and respect to Martin Luther King.” Share your thoughts on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the comments! $1.4 Billion Later: Where Did All The Haiti Relief Money Go?

It has been a year since a tragic earthquake left Haiti devastated and killed more than 300,000 people. Despite more than $1.4 billion in relief aid donated, little progress can be seen in the country and people are asking: Where’d the money go? PORT-AU-PRINCE—Last January, hundreds of thousands of Haitians lost their lives and millions lost their homes in an earthquake that flattened much of the capital. A year later, Haitians appear to have lost something else: hope. The impoverished Caribbean nation marks the anniversary of the Jan. 12, 2010, quake on Wednesday with little to cheer. Haiti’s government, which itself was hit hard by the quake, has been incapable of responding to the crisis. Foreign aid has trickled in, and a rush of well-meaning charities have led to chaos. Piles of rubble still clog the streets; at the current rate, it will take 20 years simply to clean up the mess. Nearly a million people still live in about 1,300 makeshift refugee camps that occupy every available parking lot and open space in the capital. With each passing day, the camps take on a more permanent look. “We are just completely discouraged now,” said Fai-na Bernadette, a 24-year-old nurse who has been living in a soccer field in Petionville, a suburb of the capital, alongside 3,000 other refugees. Carleene Dei, director of the United States Agency for International Development told reporters in a January 7 conference call that there was a “lack of understanding” about the pace at which pledges from March’s donors conference could be met, referring to the UN conference where nations pledged more than $10 billion to help Haiti rebuild itself. “A pledge is not a check,” she said. “A pledge has to be turned into legislation. Legislation has to be turned into plans. Plans have to be vetted and approved. And money has to be made available.” Tragic. Source

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson: The "Friendly" Dinner Date

Back in each other’s lives almost by accident (or so she claims), Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson have made up and are back on good terms. Navigating her way through life after rehab, Lindsay moved next door to Ronson in Venice, Calif., causing a brief period of tension between them. But after they made up and Sam welcomed her to the area, the two neighbors broke bread at a nearby restaurant for “a friendly dinner.” Cute. THE OLD DAZE : Might these two have a future yet? Typical of recidivist stalkers and their victims, “Lindsay has been begging Sam to see her and Sam finally gave in,” says a People source. Just kidding. About the stalking part. They really did hang out. Seems like it went well too. Earlier today, they Tweeted about the Knicks vs. Lakers game last night, with a little friendly trash talk thrown in. “I think the knicks are jet lagged. they’re getting sleepy right now – someone wake em up!!!” Sam wrote to her after the Lakers beat the Knicks. N.Y. native Lohan Tweeted back to Ronson: “They played well though :).” We’ll call it love at 3,941st Tweet, ladies and gentlemen.
