Paramore’s Ups And Downs: A Timeline

First taste of possible drama came when the group canceled a European tour back in 2008. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by James Montgomery Paramore in 2007 Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic The rock world received jarring news just before the end of 2010 when band co-founders (and brothers) Josh and Zac Farro announced they were leaving Paramore behind. Since then, the brothers issued a scathing statement about why they exited the group, and the remaining three members — singer Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis and guitarist Taylor York — sat down for an extra-long interview with MTV News to lay out their side of the story and react to the Farros’ statements. (You can watch that entire conversation as “Paramore: The Last Word” right now.) But how did the band get to the point of breaking up? There has always been upheaval with the lineup (no fewer than eight people have been a part of the band since its inception), but the first taste of possible drama came when the group abruptly canceled a European tour at the beginning of 2008, citing “a lot of internal issues.” Rumors flew about what those particular issues were (there was even speculation that Williams was pregnant), but the band remained closely guarded as to why they specifically backed out of the tour. It appeared as though the time off did them some good, as they managed to finish 2008 strong, touring the United States and playing the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards . When it finally came time to record a new album, the group addressed many of their internal issues head-on in the songs that make up Brand New Eyes, their most mature release to date. The group admitted that many of the songs on the album directly dealt with the turmoil they had experienced the year prior. “There’s a lot of calling out and pointing the finger, but then it starts to change,” Williams said at the time of Brand New Eyes ‘ release. “We’ve gone through these things, we’ve worked out most of our issues, and it’s much more positive and hopeful.” Their star continued to rise, though Williams began to experience success outside of the realm of Paramore. Just before the release of Brand New Eyes, her first ever solo track, “Teenagers,” appeared on the soundtrack to the horror movie “Jennifer’s Body.” And in early 2010, “Airplanes,” a collaboration with Atlanta rapper B.o.B from his album The Adventures of Bobby Ray, became a gigantic hit. Still, the band kept on trucking, headlining sold-out concerts all around the world and producing eye-popping videos for the singles from Brand New Eyes. As their tour wound down in December, the group was ready to move on to the next project. “We’re doing a tour of South America, and then we’re taking time off to write a new record,” York told MTV News. “We’re at the end of this record, and it’s bittersweet.” A few days later, rumors started to swirl that the Farros would be exiting, which led to both the band’s statement and the Farros’ reaction. The remaining members of Paramore have committed to continuing on as a unit, and no matter what the future holds, they are already experts in handling upheaval. Lesley Manville on Another Year and Why She Doesn’t Care About the Golden Globes

When speaking with Another Year star Lesley Manville, it’s hard to not walk away with the impression that she feels this is her big break. Sure, her career has spanned over 30 years — and Another Year is her sixth film with Academy Award nominated director Mike Leigh — but, as Manville points out, no other performance of hers has ever generated this much buzz in the United States during awards season. An awards season that has already garnered Best Actress accolades from the National Board of Review.

Tucker Carlson on Michael Vick: Execute Him!

Many football fans, including President Barack Obama, are happy about Michael Vick getting a second chance from the Philadelphia Eagles. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson is not one of those people. We know it’s a 24-hour news world, and Fox anchors are mandated to embrace the opposite view of anything Obama says, but listen to this: Tucker Carlson on Michael Vick: KILL HIM! “I’m a Christian, I’ve made mistakes myself, I believe fervently in second chances,” Carlson said. “But Michael Vick killed dogs, and he did in a cruel, heartless way. Personally, I think he should’ve been executed for that.” “He wasn’t, but the idea that the President of the United States is getting behind someone who murdered dogs? Kind of beyond the pale.” So … the Christian thing to do is execute Michael Vick? What if he can truly be rehabilitated and people can learn from his example? Michael Vick loves animals now. What more do you want? For its part, the White House reiterated that Obama condemns his crimes (running a dogfighting ring) but believes convicts should get a chance to contribute to society when they are released from prison (Vick served nearly two years). Tell us, was Michael Vick’s sentence fair?

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton Top ‘Most Admired’ Poll

Obama was named most admired living man for third year in a row. By Jayson Rodriguez Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama Photo: Jason Reed-Pool/ Getty Images President Obama can continue to brush the dirt off his shoulder . The embattled politician was named the most admired living man for the third year in a row, according to an annual poll conducted by USA Today and Gallup. Obama bested past presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton in the poll. Even though the Democrats lost control of Congress in the November midterm elections, the president was able to pass historic legislation during the subsequent lame-duck session, including repealing the miltary’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy regarding gay soldiers. Ever since Obama took office he has placed first in the poll; the 44th President of the United States, however, has seen his percentages in the poll dip each year, from a high of 32 percent in 2008 to 22 percent this past year (Bush and Clinton took 5 percent and 4 percent, respectively). Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has proven to be more dominant than Obama on the women’s side. The former First Lady notched the most admired living woman title for the ninth year in a row. She narrowly slipped past 2012 presidential hopeful Sarah Palin and media mogul Oprah Winfrey. Overall, Clinton has topped the poll 15 times since 1992. Rounding out the top 10 on the men’s side were Nelson Mandela, Pope Benedict XVI, former president Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama, the Reverend Billy Graham, Glenn Beck and Bill Gates. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Queen Elizabeth, Margaret Thatcher, Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, Burmese democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi and Angelina Jolie comprise the top 10 most admired women. The results are based on telephone surveys with a random sample of 1,019 American adults.
