CBS Shoehorns Palin ‘Refudiate’ Gaffe Into Story About NYC Mosque

On Tuesday’s CBS Evening News, correspondent Jeff Glor managed to squeeze criticism of a gaffe made by Sarah Palin into a story on a controversial plan to build a mosque just blocks from Ground Zero in New York City: “…on Twitter she called on peaceful Muslims to ‘refudiate’ the plan….Liberal bloggers pounced on the made-up word and Palin retracted her tweet.” While describing the opposing sides in the debate, Glor noted how Palin “upped an already raucous debate” with her comments on Twitter. After showing her tweet on screen, Glor played a clip of her using the word “refudiate” during a television appearance. He noted her response to criticism: “‘Shakespeare liked to coin new words, too.'” Glor then clumsily shifted back to the topic at hand: “Grammatical debates aside, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come out firmly in support of the plan.” Here is a full transcript of Glor’s July 20 report: 6:45PM KATIE COURIC: There’s a heated debate going on here in New York over a plan to build a mosque and Muslim community center near the World Trade Center site. And as national correspondent Jeff Glor reports, just about everyone is weighing in. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: I speak before you as a concerned citizen of New York. JEFF GLOR: Opponents call it a mosque in the worst possible place. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: This building, in particular, should be turned into a museum. GLOR: Supporters call it a cultural center in the best spot to encourage understanding. DARISA DARWISH [MOSQUE ADVOCATE]: If a mosque were built, then you guys would know what Islam was about. GLOR: At issue: This building in lower Manhattan, the proposed site of a 13-story community center and Islamic prayer space. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: This is the Muslim community’s effort to rebuild lower Manhattan. GLOR: The controversy? It’s only two blocks from Ground Zero. This week, Sarah Palin upped an already raucous debate when on Twitter she called on peaceful Muslims to ‘refudiate’ the plan, calling it ‘a stab in the heart for America.’ SARAH PALIN: They have power in their words. They could refudiate what it is that this group is saying. GLOR: Liberal bloggers pounced on the made-up word and Palin retracted her tweet but not her sentiment, saying ‘Shakespeare liked to coin new words, too.’ Grammatical debates aside, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come out firmly in support of the plan. MICHAEL BLOOMBERG: Everything the United States stands for and New York stands for is tolerance and openness. What is it you’re hope that this center will do?              UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: My hope is that this center will attract a lot of people who don’t know about Islam. GLOR: Do you feel like the debate is shifting at all? TIM BROWN: Yeah. It’s on a national stage now. GLOR: But Tim Brown, a former New York City firefighter who lost 93 colleagues on September 11, calls the proposal a slap in the face. Your message today to the developers behind this? BROWN: Stop it. Stop hurting the families. Everyday there’s some stories in the newspaper, they’re hurting the families again. They don’t deserve it. These American families have paid too much. GLOR: Brown and others, including New York gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio, are calling for an investigation into the financing behind the $4.8 million building purchase. Their concerns spurred in part by comments the center’s imam made to ’60 Minutes’ in 2001, just weeks after the 9/11 attacks. IMAM FEISAL [ABDUL RAUF, PARK ST. PROJECT DEVELOPER]: I wouldn’t say that the United States deserved what happened. But the United States’ policies were an accessory to the crime that happened. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Because that is the point- GLOR: Citing anti-Americanism, opponents are pushing to have the building declared a landmark, which would make it far more difficult for any Muslim center construction to begin. Jeff Glor, CBS News, New York.

Don’t Forget Home Star: The Green Bill Everyone Can Agree On

Image via Energy Star In the arena of green politics, the spotlight has been hogged by the troubled energy reform efforts in the Senate. Many are watching as the best chance to reign in carbon emissions and stimulate clean energy development on a large scale is slipping away, with Barack Obama perhaps helpless to do much about it. But another tragedy would occur if the bill that just about everybody can agree is a good idea disappears with it: the fantastic Home Star bill , which would make homes across the nation more energy efficient, and… Read the full story on TreeHugger

AP Touts Stimulus in German Recovery, Ignores Tax Cuts

If it worked for Germany, it should work for the United States, right? In a July 21 story , AP writer Geir Moulson praised government stimulus for helping Germany “bounce back” from the recession. Moulson highlighted two government stimulus packages totaling $104 billion and a government-sponsored program that cut back workers’ hours instead of laying them off as reasons for Germany’s endurance: “The various government measures are all part of the upswing.” However, nowhere in Moulsion’s 25-paragraph story did he acknowledge tax cuts over the past decade as a reason for Germany’s success. As reported in Deutsche Welle , a German media outlet, the European Union’s statistical office indicated Germany’s corporate tax rate was cut to 29.8 percent in 2010, a 42-percent decrease from the 51.6-percent rate in 2000. Germany has also cut income taxes by 3.6 percent over the past ten years. Moulson did acknowledge Germany’s role in the world economy as a factor, but for the most part, he took every opportunity to praise the government stimulus: “The main driving force for Germany, a major exporter, remains the growing world economy, the Bundesbank said. Still, there’s general agreement that the way to recovery was paved in part by government spending.” The AP story is only the latest example of media outlets championing government stimulus packages as a solution to economy woes while downplaying the benefits of tax cuts and other conservative solutions.

Oh man, this keeps getting better and better — can’t BP do something without lying or deceiving the public about it? How about something as simple as posting actual photos of its command center in Houston on the company website? Evidently not. No, a sharp-eyed blogger over at Americablog has uncovered that the company has photoshopped its command center . He quips, “I guess if you’re doing fake crisis response, you might as well fake a photo of the crisis response center.” Indeed. NPR Mourns Global Cooler-Turned-Global Warmer Scientist

Few seem to remember now, but throughout the 1970s, the advertised threat to society from global cooling was as prevalent as the current global warming alarmism. Publications including The New York Times, Time and Newsweek – the same ones hyping the dangers of a warming planet in 2010 – were warning about global cooling then . A prominent global cooler from that era has recently passed away. Stephen Schneider, a Stanford University climatologist and United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change member died in London on July 19 , as noticed on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” (h/t Tim Graham ) In an interview with NPR’s Michele Norris, White House Science Adviser John Holdren remembered Schneider, not for getting the science wrong at first but for inventing this field of science, with its acknowledgement that mankind could change the climate. “Steve would come up with crucial insights that really opened up whole new dimensions of research in climate science,” Holdren said on the July 19 broadcast . “One of his big contributions was that the influences that humans were having on climate was not just the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane and others, but our influence also included the effects of particles. And he was sometimes criticized for being too extreme. But, in fact, he was very middle of the road. Steve was as fierce in his criticism of people who he thought were overstating what we know about climate as he was in his criticisms of those he thought were understating.” Holdren is a curious but perhaps appropriate individual for NPR to turn to in remembering the work on Schneider and his theory of human’s impacting nature extensively. In the 1970s, Holdren made his own controversial statements. In a 1973 book he co-authored with Paul R. Ehrlch and Anne H. Ehrlich, Holdren called for a “massive” campaign to “de-develop” the United States .  However, according to Holdren, Schneider saw the light and got on the global warming bandwagon – not because the theory of global cooling was proven false, but just because the theories were competing and global warming seemed to have won out. “In the early 1970s, everybody was in doubt as to the outcome of the competition between the cooling effects of particles and, on the other hand, the warming effect of greenhouse gases,” Holdren said. “And it was only with the emergence of additional data and additional analyses that it became clear that the greenhouse gases were going to win this competition. And at that point, he was one of the first to point out that, in fact, overall, we were heading for a much hotter world.” In 2007, the Business & Media Institute looked at news media coverage of climate change and found alarmism stretching back 100 years. BMI’s Special Report: Fire & Ice exposed the media’s warnings about impending climate doom during four different times in the last century switching from worries over global cooling to warming to cooling to warming again.

CBS Celebrates: Democrats ‘Won A Major Battle’ On Unemployment Benefits

After the network pushed Congress for weeks to extend unemployment benefits, CBS’s Early Show cheered the expected passage of the legislation on Tuesday. Co-host Harry Smith noted how Democrats “have enough votes to break a GOP filibuster” and White House correspondent Chip Reid later added: “Democrats appear to have won a major battle in the long fight to extend unemployment benefits.” Reid portrayed the Democrats as standing on the side of the American people against obstructionist Republicans: “…this unemployment benefits extension has been stalled in the Senate since June. If it passes, millions of Americans will start getting about $309 a week.” A headline on screen read: “Jobless Relief; Senate Set to Extend Unemployment Benefits.” Describing White House attacks on the GOP over the issue, Reid declared: “President Obama accused Republicans of indifference to out of work Americans for refusing to extend benefits.” After a clip of the President was played, Reid explained Republican objections: “they support the extension but want the $34 billion cost paid for by an equal cut in the budget.” A clip of House Minority Leader John Boehner was played, but Reid chose to end with Obama: “The President fired back, saying the Republicans have a double standard.” Following Reid’s report, Smith had brief discussion with business and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis about the extension of benefits: “We’re talking about an awful lot of people who are very dependent on this. A lot because this economy, the rebound hasn’t happened the way so many people anticipated.” Jarvis replied: “…when they lose those $309 checks on a weekly basis, it not only has an impact on them individually, but it also has an impact on the economy overall. And that’s because when people get unemployment checks, research has shown it usually goes directly back into the economy.” Jarvis failed to offer any criticism of the extension. In addition, neither her nor Smith placed any blame for the still weak economy on Obama administration policies.      Here is a full transcript of the July 20 segment: 7:00AM TEASE HARRY SMITH: Unemployment battle. Senate Democrats may finally have the crucial vote needed to pass an extension of jobless benefits. But Republicans say how are you going to pay for that? We’ll have the latest on the battle. 7:09AM SEGMENT SMITH: Now to the ongoing battle over unemployment benefits. Senate Democrats are expected to have enough votes to break a GOP filibuster today. CBS News chief White House correspondent Chip Reid has the latest on that. Good morning, Chip. CHIP REID: Well, good morning, Harry. You know, this unemployment benefits extension has been stalled in the Senate since June. If it passes, millions of Americans will start getting about $309 a week, unemployed Americans, of course. And passage now appears all but certain. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Jobless Relief; Senate Set to Extend Unemployment Benefits] JOE MANCHIN [GOVERNOR, D-WEST VIRGINIA]: Let me introduce to you, officially, the newest member of the United States Senate, Carte Goodwin. REID: With that appointment, Democrats appear to have won a major battle in the long fight to extend unemployment benefits. Carte Goodwin, now interim senator from West Virginia, replacing the late Robert Byrd, should give the Democrats the 60 votes they need to end a Republican filibuster and send the bill for a final vote. Monday, President Obama accused Republicans of indifference to out of work Americans for refusing to extend benefits. BARACK OBAMA: It’s time to do what’s right, not for the next election, but for the middle class. REID: 2.5 million workers have been waiting six weeks for relief since benefits expired June 2nd. Republicans say they support the extension but want the $34 billion cost paid for by an equal cut in the budget. JOHN BOEHNER: We want to make sure they’ve got the help they need, but if Washington’s going to spend that money, then we ought to find offsets in other spending, so that we’re not adding to the debt. REID: The President fired back, saying the Republicans have a double standard. OBAMA: The same people who didn’t have any problem spending hundreds of billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans are now saying we shouldn’t offer relief to middle class Americans like Jim or Leslie or Denise, who really need help. REID: Now, in addition to Goodwin’s vote, Democrats are also counting on two Republican votes, the two Republicans from Maine, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Harry. SMITH: Chip Reid in Washington this morning. Thank you very much. Joining us now is CBS News business and economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis. Good morning. REBECCA JARVIS: Good morning, Harry. SMITH: Want to take this out of the political arena and put it into real life for a little while. We’re talking about an awful lot of people who are very dependent on this. A lot because this economy, the rebound hasn’t happened the way so many people anticipated. JARVIS: Harry, you’re making a really valid point there, which is that many millions of people have been unemployed for more than six months. It’s a problem that has lasted a lot longer for a lot of people. And so when they lose those $309 checks on a weekly basis, it not only has an impact on them individually, but it also has an impact on the economy overall. And that’s because when people get unemployment checks, research has shown it usually goes directly back into the economy. So if you’re unemployed, you get a check, you spend that check immediately as opposed to putting it in the bank and letting it sit there. SMITH: It’s very interesting, we talk about unemployment numbers a lot. Unemployment rate right now is 9.5%. It’s finally below 10%. But it seems to be languishing in this sort of state of it’s really so much higher than we’ve – we’re really accustomed to.          JARVIS: It is much higher than we’re accustomed to and that 9.5% number equates to about 14.6 million people who are out of work 8.5 million of them lost their jobs as a result of the recession. And what’s also scary about that number is that it doesn’t equate to numerous people who have given up looking for work and who aren’t collecting unemployment benefits and who aren’t accounted for in the system. So it’s actually an even a larger problem than what the numbers show. SMITH: Rebecca Jarvis, as always, thank you so much. Do appreciate it.

China in Denial About Becoming World’s Largest Energy Consumer

photo: Dieter Weinelt via flickr China passed the United States in terms of national carbon emissions a couple years back, and according to new data from the International Energy Agency also just passed the US in terms of total energy consumption. That doesn’t quite fit with China’s cultivated image of still being a developing economy in need of special international privileges, so it’s denying that the IEA figures paint a true picture. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
