Deuces: “Gay Therapy” Ministry That Focused On Curing Desires For Same Sex Lovin’ Shuts Down

Gay Therapy Ministry Designed To Cure Same-Sex Attraction Shuts Down A Christian ministry program that was put in place for the purpose of curing gay people of their sexual orientation has finally decided to close its’ door after 37 years in practice. via NBC News Former participants in a controversial program aimed at ridding people of their h*m*se*uality congratulated its leader for deciding to shut down its ministry, but other groups said there was a role for the “reparative therapy” used in the “ex-gay movement.” The Christian ministry, Exodus International, was founded in 1976 and claims more than 200 branches, churches and counselors in the United States and Canada. It insisted that people could overcome same-sex attraction through prayer and therapy. But mainstream psychiatric and medical groups have said that program, also known as “reparative therapy,” is not founded in science and can be harmful. The American Psychiatric Association said 15 years ago that it could cause depression, anxiety and self-depressive behavior in patients. In a statement, Exodus International, which describes itself as the oldest and largest group of its kind, said that its board of directors had decided to close down after a year of talking and praying about its place in a changing culture. We’re surprised this practice even lasted 30+ years given all the gay rights activism that has surfaced over the past decade. What’s your take on this, Bossip fam? Shuttesrstock

For Discussion: The American Medical Association Labels Obesity A Disease…Do You Agree?

This is a step in a positive direction by labeling obesity a disease. Obesity Labeled A Disease According to CNN One word could have a big impact on the way doctors treat obesity in the United States. The American Medical Association has adopted a new policy that officially labels obesity as a disease “requiring a range of medical interventions to advance obesity treatment and prevention,” according to an AMA statement. The physicians’ group voted to approve the obesity policy, among others, on Tuesday during its annual meeting in Chicago. The U.S. obesity rate increased almost 50% between 1997 and 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Today, nearly 30% of American adults are considered obese, and the problem is almost as prevalent in kids. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years, the CDC says. Obesity for adults is defined as having a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. BMI is a way to measure body fat based on your weight and height. (Calculate your BMI here) Being obese increases your risk factor for developing many serious conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. In fact, obesity has been linked to almost every chronic disease in some way or another. “Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue,” AMA board member Dr. Patrice Harris said in a statement. Obesity has long been recognized as a disease by other groups, but this move by the AMA sends a strong signal to the medical community, said CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Some experts worry suddenly declaring one-third of Americans “ill” or “sick” will increase the desire for quick interventions or medications and discourage people from making the lifestyle changes known to combat obesity. On the other hand, AMA’s declaration could help increase funding for future obesity research. It could also lead to payment for doctors who want to simply talk to patients about nutrition or exercise — time that’s not currently reimbursed by insurance plans. Identifying obesity as a disease may also help in reducing the stigma often associated with being overweight, said Joe Nadglowski, president and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition. “Obesity has been considered for a long time to be a failure of personal responsibility — a simple problem of eating too much and exercising too little,” he said. “But it’s a complex disease… we’re hoping attitudes will change.” Do you think obesity is like other diseases or is it a result of people feeding their faces? Serena Williams Implies Steubenville Rape Victim to Blame For Ordeal, Sort of Backtracks

Tennis great Serena Williams is in hot water over incendiary comments she made in Rolling Stone about the victim in the Steubenville, Oh., rape saga. Williams came under fire this week after saying that “[the Steubenville rape victim ] shouldn’t have put herself in that position” at a high school party. Now Serena is issuing an apology, though she also appears to be deflecting responsibility and implying that she may not have ever made that remark. “I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article,” Williams says. “What was written – what I supposedly said – is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame.” So … what she supposedly said was hurtful. What did she say? Follow the link for the Rolling Stone article . You be the judge.

Obesity Now Defined as Disease By American Medical Association

The American Medical Association formally voted earlier this week to classify obesity as a disease, one that 35 percent of U.S. adults reportedly have. The classification is aimed in part to get doctors to tackle obesity as if they were treating a disease, rather than a mere lifestyle in need of modification. Dr. Patrice Harris of the AMA said in a statement: “Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles a complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans.” “The AMA is committed to improving health and working to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes, which are often linked to obesity.” Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) – a ratio of height over weight – of 30 or higher. People are considered normal weight with a BMI of 18.5-24.9. While obesity may not have formally been considered a disease before, it has certainly been linked to diseases by growing bodies of research. Studies have linked obesity to risk increases for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, liver disease, sleep apnea, breathing problems, and osteoarthritis. Moreover, experts believe it can lead to joint pain, infertility, sexual side effects and cancers of the breast, colon, esophagus, pancreas and kidneys. The 2013 “Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer” found significant rises in obesity-related cancers over the past three decades. Heart disease in particular is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women, doctors say. On and on the studies go. Obesity’s new disease classification may also make more Americans realize what inactivity and non- healthy recipes could be doing to their health. A January 2013 survey showed that as many as 70 percent of Americans know heart disease and diabetes are health risks tied to obesity. However, only 7 percent of respondents knew cancer was a risk and 5 percent knew asthma and sleep apnea could be helped by shedding pounds. The new disease classification could also have an impact on legislation in D.C. and with insurance companies, regarding procedures and medications. What do you think: Should obesity be considered a disease?   Yes, and it should be treated like one! No! People need to take responsibility for their lifestyles! View Poll »

Sebastien De La Cruz Responds to Racist Twitter Users, Takes Pride in Father

Sebastien De La Cruz is 11 years old. Yet the singer is clearly more mature than a handful of morons on the Internet, many of whom reacted to his national anthem performance on Tuesday by raining hate all over Twitter. Sebastien De La Cruz National Anthem Performance Sebastien De La Cruz Interview The former America’s Got Talent contestant sang The Star-Spangled Banner prior to Game 3 of the NBA Finals… only to become the subject of racist Tweets that couldn’t believe someone of Mexican heritage was honoring the United States. In response, De La Cruz appeared on a Fox affiliate in San Antonio yesterday and responded to the haters. “They don’t know my life,” he said. “My father was actually in the navy for a pretty long time, and I actually salute him today for that. I just wanna thank him and to be able to sing the national anthem.” “People don’t know, they just assume that I’m just Mexican. But I’m not from Mexico, I’m from San Antonio, born and raised. True San Antonio Spurs fan.” The admirable young man also took to Twitter himself and wrote: “Please do not pay attention to the negative people. I am an American living the American Dream. This is part of the American life.” Amen, Sebastien.
