Jennifer Lopez concerts are always eye-popping, titillating events … but the show she put on in Italy last Thursday took the experience to a new level. Performing in a sexy sequined suit before a sold-out Bologna, a tricky dance move caused the top of her outfit to shift near the chest, resulting in a nipple slip: Of course, this pro’s pro doesn’t duck for cover. After a quick adjustment with the aid of her dancers, J. Lo went right on performing without missing a beat. No word if Casper Smart helped her “adjust” after the show. Click to enlarge the J. Lo photos above! [Photos: Pacific Coast News]
Is the media grossly misreporting the taxes paid by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney? According to one review of his 2011 return , very much so. Mitt and Ann Romney ‘s 2011 adjusted gross income (AGI) was about $18.6 million, with their total federal income tax coming to $1.9 million, or 14.1 percent. This number is a bit misleading, however, when analyzing Mitt Romney tax returns . It implies the Romneys kept 85.9 percent of what they earned, which isn’t the case. First off, they clamed $4.6 million in itemized deductions, including $1.3 million in state and local income taxes and $215,000 in real estate taxes. That’s more than $1.5 million they never saw, and the generous couple also donated $1.3 million in cash and another $921,000 in securities. Another $2.21 million they did not keep for themselves. The Romneys earned $2.2 million in qualified dividends and $6.8 million in capital gains in 2011, income taxed at the favorable rate of 15 percent. While this rate seems low, it has been taxed at the corporate level first at a higher rate – 35 percent. The government has been paid twice, in other words. Finally, the Romneys paid $103,000 in foreign taxes, which has nothing to do with offshore accounts, but global investments taxed in their nation of origin. According to this analysis, on $18.6 million of productivity, they paid $10.8 million in taxes and gifts to charity, keeping just 42.1 percent of what they produced. Yes, this still makes them extremely wealthy, and no, it does necessarily make Romney any more (or less) qualified to be President of the United States. Viewed through a different lens, however, Romney’s generosity and tax burden is not the example of responsibility-shirking greed his opponents might like you to believe. The manager of Denver Chipotle restaurant has become an Internet celebrity thanks to a photo of himself with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. One look at it and you’ll know why: Marty Arps, 20, posed for a group photo with Romney and other Chipotle employees Tuesday, during a break in his preparations for the presidential debate . Arps’ wide-eyed expression while pointing at Romney is priceless, and brings to mind a similar photo of a Colorado bar-goer who met President Obama this year: In Arps’ case, he said, “It’s just a facial expression I do when I’m excited. It’s like, ‘Ah, it’s them, right there in front of you!’ They’re not from another world!'” He said he made the same face when meeting Nicki Minaj . Hard to say if that’s even more exciting than the possible future President of the United States.
From leading the free world at the United Nations General Assembly to leading a political discussion on The View, President Barack Obama had quite an eventful day. He and First Lady Michelle Obama sat down with the ABC show’s panel today and contrasted his and challenger Mitt Romney ‘s differing views on tax policy: Obamas on The View This is an election year? Who knew. The ladies of The View also asked he thinks the country would fare if Republican opponent Romney were actually elected. Obama diplomatically replied that America is strong enough to survive any leadership, but “the American people don’t want to just survive, we want to thrive.” Nicely played. As for her own aspirations, don’t expect Michelle Obama to attempt to follow in her husband’s footsteps, a la Hillary and Bill Clinton . She addressed that topic laughingly, saying, “It takes a lot of patience to be the president of the United States, and I’m not that patient!” Barbara Walters also asked Michelle to describe her husband’s personality, noting honestly that “we hear aloof, cold, unemotional.” “He’s very loving. He’s very giving. He’s very open,” the first lady gushed. “He’s funny. I’m funnier. But we understand that!” Point, Michelle! The couple recounted their first date back in 1989, eating ice cream outside a Baskin Robbins in Chicago. They shared their first kiss, a fact commemorated by a plaque (seriously). The president also described daughters Sasha, 11, and Malia, 14, “spinning around” backstage and reenacting Hannah Montana at the Democratic National Convention. He quipped that he walked out on stage before his DNC speech “thinking about Hannah Montana.” One can see how that would be a little awkward. Kids … Decision 2012: Obama-Biden Romney-Ryan View Poll »
Physicians Recommending ‘IUD’ Option Become Available For Teenage Girls The teen pregnancy epidemic in the United States has long been a controversial topic of discussion from doctor’s offices, to high school sex education classes and even into the homes of parents with teenagers across America. In the latest effort to decrease the occurrence of teen pregnancy , a prominent group of health physicians are suggesting that doctors begin offering IUDs as contraception to sexually active teenage girls. via ABCNews A leading group of physicians who advise on women’s health has issued new guidelines recommending for the first time that doctors offer intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implantable contraception — methods commonly referred to as long-acting reversible contraception — to teenage patients. More than one third of young people ages 15 to 19 are sexually active, yet most teens are not using, and may not even know about, these birth control methods, according to statistics from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) issued a paper Thursday evening containing new guidelines to offer IUDs and implants as first-line birth control options for teens. What say you Bossipers…is this recommendation going too far? Would you allow your teenage daughter to get an IUD? Images via Shutterstock
Ahead of Thursday’s trailer premiere, Steven Spielberg and Co. have released a first-look teaser for Lincoln , starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th President of the United States. Get a taste of what Spielberg has in store with this somber (but stirring!) bit of footage from the film. Gettysburg Address, y’all! I like the conceit of Lincoln hearing his own inspirational words recited back to him, feeling his impact on his fellow man even in the sparest of moments in what looks to be a quiet Union encampment. Synopsis: Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln,” a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come. Lincoln hits theaters on November 9 and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, Lee Pace, Jackie Earle Haley, John Hawkes, and more. With just under 300 features, the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival is a yearly behemoth that regularly churns out a number of films that will head to U.S. theaters and vie for the year-end awards race. In fact, Toronto is considered a launch pad for the long, long awards season that will culminate in the Oscar ceremony February 24th. Some recent Oscar winners that played TIFF before heading out to audiences in North America include The King’s Speech and Slumdog Millionaire . Over the next several days, ML will preview some of the titles we believe will be catching attention either with audiences, the awards race (or of course both). The ten titles that follow range from returning auteurs like Terrence Malick and Noah Baumbach to Toronto veterans that have managed to surprise audiences with their unique vision and will likely do so again. And there are some newcomers we just found interesting. This week, ML will profile some of the top “high profile” titles we’ll be watching closely. Docs, Midnight/Genre and Foreign-Language titles will follow this week. Take a look and by all means, add your opinions. To The Wonder , directed by Terrence Malick Famously reclusive, Terrence Malick nevertheless shows his work ethic with many projects on tap. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Director for his last film, The Tree of Life as well as Best Picture and Best Cinematography. His latest film, To the Wonder is a romantic drama who reconnects with a woman from his hometown after his marriage to a European woman falls apart. The film stars Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck (who directed Argo , which is also screening at the festival) and Javier Bardem. Yellow , directed by Nick Cassavetes Nick Cassavetes added director to his resume back in 1996 with Unhook the Stars starring Gena Rowlands, Marisa Tomei and Gérard Depardieu. The next year, he took She’s So Lovely to Cannes. Known for his acting, including The Hangover Part II last year, he directed Sienna Miller and Lucy Punch in his latest project Yellow , which is TIFF-bound. The “dramedy” revolves around Mary Holmes, a young woman with a drug habit and that’s just the beginning of her problems. Inescapable , directed by Ruba Nadda Canadian director Ruba Nadda is no stranger to the Toronto International Film Festival. Her 2009 feature Cairo Time , starring Oscar-nominee Patricia Clarkson and Alexander Siddig won Best Canadian Feature at the event. Her latest film, Inescapable , which also stars Alexander Siddig along with Joshua Jackson, has been dubbed a “Syrian-flavored Taken “. In the film, Siddig plays a father who is forced to return to Damascus after 30 year after his vacationing daughter goes missing. Ginger and Rosa , directed by Sally Potter British-born director Sally Potter made a splash in 1992 with Orlando starring Tilda Swinton and Billy Zane. It won a prize at the European Film Awards as well as a string of nods at film festivals worldwide. Her follow-ups include The Tango Lesson (1997) and Yes (2004). Her latest film screening in Toronto’s Special Presentations section revolves around two teenage girls in London around 1962. They are inseparable friends and dream of lives beyond the domestic work their mothers had. As the Cold War and the sexual revolution heat up, however, their friendship is threatened. Disconnect , directed by Henry Alex Rubin Filmmaker Henry Alex Rubin received an Oscar nomination for his second film, Murderball back in 2005 (shared with Dana Adam Shapiro). The documentary debuted at the Sundance Film Festival that year and continued to gain notoriety throughout the festival circuit. His new dramatic thriller Stars Alexander Skarsgard, Max Thieriot and Jason Bateman about a group of people searching for human connections in today’s wired world. Frances Ha , directed by Noah Baumbach Noah Baumbach received a Best Original Screenplay Oscar-nomination for The Squid and the Whale back in 2005 and has won fans and nods for penning other popular films including this summer’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and Fantastic Mr. Fox . His latest film stars Greta Gerwig as New Yorker Frances. She has no apartment and is an apprentice at a dance company, though she’s not really a dancer. She plunges straight into fulfilling her dreams even as their reality dwindles. Much Ado About Nothing , directed by Joss Whedon Joss Whedon has had quite a year so far and he will be heading to Toronto on the heels of directing the year’s biggest box office draw, The Avengers . But his latest film may not quite have the same mass appeal as his super-hero movie, but Shakespeare fans will likely be interested in his Toronto offering. Whedon’s latest is a modern re-telling of Shakespeare’s classic comedy about two paris of lovers with different takes on romance and a way with words. Spring Breakers , Harmony Korine Harmony Korine made a splash on the filmmaking scene as the co-writer of Kids in 1995 (along with director Larry Clark) and he moved into the director’s chair with Gummo in 1997, receiving a critics-centered FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival. Korine is courageous in his story-telling, his long list of features and shorts include 2007’s comedy Mister Lonely about a Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe lookalikes living on a Scottish commune, while 2009’s Trash Humpers , which played in Toronto that year, is well…pretty much as the title suggests. His latest, Spring Breakers , follows four teens in a spring break that goes awry. After landing in jail, they are bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do more dirty work. Peaches Does Herself , directed by Peaches Peaches fans will undoubtedly flock to see their idol in her first film in which she stars as herself. In the film, she makes sexually forthright music and then decides to do what her fans want – a transsexual. And if things aren’t complicated enough, she falls for a she-male and gets her heart broken. Laurence Anyways , directed by Xavier Dolan The Quebecois wunderkind returns to Toronto with his third feature, not bad for a filmmaker in his early 20s. He won festival accolades for his debut I Killed My Mother and followed it up with Heartbeats , which Dolan said he wrote on a train to Toronto from his home town, Montreal. Dolan starred in his previous films, but stayed behind the camera for Laurence Anyways which centers on the challenge a couple face when the man decides to have a sex change. The Toronto Film Festival runs September 6-16. Stay tuned for more from TIFF here at Movieline. Follow Brian Brooks on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
Oh, those Oogieloves — even a record-setting, all-time low worst box office opening of all time can’t keep ’em down. At least, according to Oogieloves mastermind Kenn Viselman, who managed to spin the G-rated kiddie pic’s abysmal $448,131 three-day take (that’s roughly $207 per screen) into something positive. Debuting to shockingly low $47-per-screen results on Wednesday, Oogieloves was headed for the wrong kind of notoriety even as business picked up ever so slightly over the long holiday weekend; by Labor Day, numbers across its 2,160-theater opening had risen to $72 per screen. Improvement! Speaking with The Wrap on Monday, Viselman, who boasted of turning the Teletubbies into a phenomenon and opened Oogieloves in wide release under his own Kenn Viselman Productions banner, embraced the silver lining: This was never about box office,” Viselman told TheWrap Monday morning. “It was about exposure. We’ve now got the notoriety we were trying to get for weeks before the film opened,” he said. He said that a financing glitch weeks before the release hurt the marketing of the film. “I won’t say we’re not disappointed, for our team and for the exhibitors who both did a great job,” he said. “But this wasn’t made to win the Academy Award — it was made to get parents to get up and dance with their kids. I know from talking with parents who did take their kids to see it, that they loved it. “The attention we’re getting as a result of this is going to help our video on demand and DVD campaigns,” he said, “and it’s going to help the next films, whether they’re theatrical releases or video.” Next films . Ahem. The “interactive” children’s adventure involves three giant candy-colored creatures called the Oogieloves trying to find five magical balloons in time for their friend’s birthday party. Along the way they cross paths with a veritable buffet of C-listers (Chazz Palminteri, Jamie Pressly, Cloris Leachman, Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, Toni Braxton) who sing and dance and encourage the kids in the audience to follow suit. It’s worth noting that in spite of the plot and box office response, Oogieloves did garner some critical support. Over at Rotten Tomatoes it boasts a 32 percent Tomatometer rating; one parenting-oriented publication called it ” enthralling for preschoolers .” My friend Nick Robinson took the liberty of Tweeting his Oogieloves theatrical experience yesterday in a mostly empty theater — if singing and shouting and dancing and blowing kisses at the screen is encouraged in Oogieloves , why not live-Tweeting? If you’re not among the target demographic of parents enduring talking vacuums and Doc Brown in a sombrero for the sake of their toddlers, this might give you the best idea of what it means to live through Oogieloves : From a narrative perspective the movie is troubled because it has failed to establish why the balloons are magical. #OOGIELOVES — Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 The vacuum cleaner is mad that the #OOGIELOVES drank milkshakes and he made sure the pillow was asleep so he could flirt w/ the window.— Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 I don't even like Cary Elwes that much but I feel bad for him as a human being. #OOGIELOVES — Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 The balloons sang a song and then they set the movie up for a sequel. #OOGIELOVES — Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 THE OTHER PEOPLE JUST WALKED OUT!!!!!!!!!! #OOGIELOVES it's not Over— Nick Robinson (@Nickrob) September 04, 2012 Reward Robinson for doing this so you don’t have to by following him on Twitter . And can we all have a moment of silence for poor Cary Elwes? Here’s a clip of him in Oogieloves as “Bobby Wobbly.” It’s worse than I’d feared . Previously: So, WTF Is An Oogieloves, Anyway? When Paramount moved their big-budget genre actioner Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters from March 2012 to January 11, 2013 — ostensibly to wait it out while star Jeremy Renner became a huge box office draw — many were appropriately skeptical. Now that the first trailer has arrived, see for yourself how director Tommy Wirkola ( Dead Snow ) updates the folktale with Renner and Gemma Arterton as the now-grown siblings/witch bounty hunters. Was the release date shuffle a case of brilliant thinking or a classic dumping ground offload? Watch it on YouTube . Gotta be real here: I love me some Renner. And Arterton holds her own as a quippy, capable lady hunter herself (well, except for the getting kidnapped and punched by evil witches part). But does it seem a little too Van Helsing ? Have audiences forgotten The Brothers Grimm ? Is it just me, or would you rather see Renner and Arterton as love interests than siblings? Also, they speak with American accents but she pronounces it “Hahhn-sel.” Sigh. Verdict: Looks too generic to get excited about, but the power of Renner compels me. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter .
