Jay-Z Infected By Rita Ora’s Energy

‘When she walks into a room, her energy picks you up,” Hov tells MTV News of his Roc Nation signee. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News Jay-Z sure knows how to make dreams come true. Through the years, Hov has provided platforms for quite a few key artists like Kanye West and Rihanna — maybe you’ve heard of ’em. He has also lent a hand to a few less notables — Rell, anyone? — but when it comes to Roc Nation’s new pop starlet Rita Ora , Hova has high hopes. “She’s one of the people that, if you were in the position, you say, ‘I’m gonna help her get her dream out and then we’ll see what happens,’ ” Jay-Z told MTV News about the Kosovo-born, West London-bred singer when we caught up with him in Philadelphia on Monday. “I think her energy is infectious, because out the gate, two #1s in London and she’ll just continue to grow from there.” The later of the two #1s that Jigga references is her current single “R.I.P.,” a track that was co-written by Drake and features Tinie Tempah. The fiery electro-love ode finds Ora staking her claim in a convoluted love triangle, making sensual offers that her boo simply can’t refuse. “R.I.P. to the girl you used to see,” she sings with a sexy wit. What’s not to love about Rita? She perfectly balances over-the-top talent with a simple, around-the-way-girl charm. Her debut U.S. single “How We Do (Party)” is a nod to the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1991 underground track “Party and Bullsh–,” doesn’t get more around the way than that. (She told us last month she’s a ” huge Notorious B.I.G. fan.”) You’ll be hard-pressed to find a bigger B.I.G. fan than Jay, and it just so happens he’s pretty fond of Rita as well. “She was the cool girl that worked in the sneaker store in the hood and everyone knew of her. She was just in there dreamin’ and she just wanted it so bad,” he said, describing Ora with awe. “You could just feel the excitement and the energy when she walks in the room, the room really changes. I know a lot of people say that and it gets to be clich

Nicki Minaj And Nas Seal ‘Right By My Side’ Video With A Kiss

Rap superstars get cozy in just-premiered clip, which also features Chris Brown. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj and Nas in her “Right By My Side” video Photo: Cash Money/Young Money/Universal Music Nicki and Nas —it has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? It’s no secret that Nicki Minaj has a flair for the dramatic, and on Wednesday (May 16), when she debuted her “Right by My Side” video on MTV, Nicki surprised many by casting the Queensbridge rap great as her leading man. The bright and cheery video opens with a pensive Nicki seated in a high-backed chair fit for a queen; her mind is clearly elsewhere, unaware of the camera’s gaze. Only a few seconds pass before Nas struts into the scene and the two lean in to share a smooch only to find their lives subjected to a rewind sequence before their lips touch. “It all comes down to this, I miss your morning,” Nicki sings on cue as the viewer is taken back in time. It’s all pretty rosy as the lovesick couple share deep conversation and an inside joke as Nas hands his honey a silver dollar, which she flips into a wishing well. The clip has all the makings of a Nicholas Sparks romance flick: There’s PDA, hand-holding, shopping trips and outdoor lunches. In one scene, Nas — who sports his trademark half-moon Caesar and big-framed 1980s-inspired glasses — surprises Nicki with a new car, topped off with a pink bow, of course. The reigning rap queen is so excited she leaps into his open arms. When Chris Brown shows up for his guest verse and duet-styled hook, he is set outside of the video’s story line, delivering passionate performance scenes but never interrupting the two lovebirds. Breezy is no doubt a superstar, but he sits as a third wheel on Nicki and Nas’ romantic ride. The vibe of the soft love song switches by the time the Female Weezy’s rap verse rolls in. It’s quite the verbal display as she sits beside Nas, wearing his hoodie and rapping in double-time of her own sexual prowess. “My p—y game so cold, that he always seem to come back/ ‘Cause he knows that it be a wrap when I’m riding it from the back,” she spits while wearing God’s Son’s oversized medallion around her neck. For the most part, the couple can’t stay away from each other, but there is clearly some separation between the two lovers, even if only for a brief, undefined moment. In the closing scene, a lonely and longing Nicki sits on a park bench under a full moon with a sullen look on her typically animated face. Her frown is quickly remedied when Nas pulls up besides his boo and takes a seat next to her. They first hug and then share a deep and sensual kiss that is sure to get the rumor mill spinning out of control. What did you think of Nicki Minaj and Nas’ kiss in the “Right By My Side” video? Katy Perry Isn’t Looking To Top Herself On Next Album

‘I’m gonna follow my heart as I always have and hopefully people will like it,’ singer tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi Katy Perry Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images One would think that after Katy Perry releases Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, the final chapter of her highly successful album Teenage Dream, later this month, she would be ready to take a break. Think again. Following the chart-topping success of her single “Part of Me,” which she insists is not a jab at former husband Russell Brand , Perry has already begun thinking about the concept of her next album. “I don’t want to jinx myself ’cause I haven’t stepped into the studio. I have an idea — I always have an idea. Like, I have an idea for the next two records; it just depends,” Perry told MTV News in Los Angeles. “What I say is, I’m gonna kind of put my finger out there and test the pulse or test the waters of what the world wants, or what I need to say, which is probably most important rather than what the world wants.” Coming off the success of Teenage Dream, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and produced five #1 singles, Perry is not looking to outdo herself on her next musical effort. She’s just going to follow her instincts. “I don’t want to give too much away. I also don’t want to play the game of trying to continually top myself because eventually it may not always go as I planned,” the singer said. “I may not get to be able to have another #1, so I’m just gonna do what feels right for me artistically. I’m very inspired at the moment, and so I’m gonna follow my heart as I always have and hopefully people will like it.” Perry, who also revealed that she “has a lot to say” on her next album, told “Saturday Night Live” star Kristen Wiig in Interview magazine that her music is “about to get real f—ing dark.” But she promises that her die-hard fans will still be able to relate to this next step in her musical journey. “I imagine that maybe my next record would be a little bit more of an artistic venture,” Perry said. “Not that I’m going to self-sabotage either and be like, ‘I’m going to make a crazy record that nobody really understands.’ ” What do you hope to hear on Katy Perry’s next album? Demi Lovato’s Music Reflects Her ‘Open Heart’

‘It’s nice being able to tell the truth,’ Lovato says of Unbroken and her ‘Stay Strong’ documentary, which debuts Tuesday on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Universal Music Group Demi Lovato is no stranger to being honest with her ups and downs. When she dropped Unbroken last fall, several of the cuts, including the album’s staggering lead single, “Skyscraper,” seemed to reflect on her own personal journey. Recorded after she left a treatment center in 2011, the album was full of not only girl-power anthems, but also reflective ballads about the struggles of loving both yourself and others. “The album I wanted to keep upbeat and uplifting; I didn’t want to come out with this depressing album. I think it’s important that I kept a lot of my heart open on the album because I talked about my personal issues,” she told MTV News about the release before Tuesday’s premiere of her MTV documentary, “Stay Strong,” which also touches on many of her personal issues and trying her best to put her life back together after entering rehab in October 2010. “But I also had some fun dance songs on there for people to enjoy,” she added about the album. Whereas some pop stars tend to shy away from their own lives on their albums, Lovato fully embraced the joys and the sorrows of her life. “I think it’s nice being able to tell the truth and being able to really talk about these issues rather than hiding it and not talking about it and sharing it,” she added. “So I think I enjoy it more than anything I’d done before when I was trying to hide everything.” The album’s next single is “Give Your Heart a Break.” Lovato is set to welcome fans into her life when “Stay Strong” debuts on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV followed by a live Q&A with the star during “The After Show” at 11 p.m. ET/PT. “I’ve just been working at it a day at a time and have been trying to continue to fight my hardest,” she told us about still dealing with her problems in the public eye. “And I’ve had my ups and downs, and I’m still trying, but overall it’s been a really great journey, and I’m thankful for everything that I’ve been through.” Don’t miss “Demi Lovato: Stay Strong,” debuting Tuesday, March 6, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Swizz Beatz’s Megaupload Shut Down By Feds

Action is among largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States, Department of Justice confirms in statement to MTV News. By Rob Markman Swizz Beatz Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Megaupload’s problems continue to mount. On Wednesday, news broke that the popular file-sharing site had come under fire after Universal Music Group took issue with a promotional video featuring Universal Music Group artists like Kanye West , will.i.am and Diddy. Now, the site run by Swizz Beatz has been shut down. On Thursday (January 19), the federal government took the action against Megaupload.com, and also arrested several members of the company, hitting them with multiple racketeering and copyright infringement charges, according to a statement issued to MTV News by the U.S. Department of Justice. A federal indictment alleges that the site, which allows users to transfer large files, has generated more than $175 million in criminal proceed and costs copyright-holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated movies, albums and other materials. Swizz Beatz, Megaupload’s CEO, was not charged in the indictment which was handed down on January 5, and as of now, it is unclear how the producer/rapper’s involvement with the company will play into the case. The Associated Press reported that Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom (also known as Kim Schmitz) was arrested Thursday in New Zealand along with three others. The Department of Justice said that this is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States. The news broke a day after major websites like Wikipedia and Google protested against the U.S. House of Representatives’ Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA , and the Senate’s similar Protect IP act. Representatives for Swizz Beatz had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. Related Artists Swizz Beatz

Google Music Launches, Plans To Take On iTunes

Users can store up to 20,000 songs on the Google cloud. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Google/ MTV News After a summer of beta testing and months of rumors, Google officially launched its long-rumored Google Music service on Wednesday in an attempt to compete with the undisputed champion of digital downloading, Apple’s iTunes. The initial reaction from Silicon Valley tech writers was that the service was, well, pretty similar to iTunes, but, you know, not as great. Google’s bid to break Apple’s decade-long supremacy in the digital music realm allows users to store up to 20,000 songs in their personal locker on the Google cloud service. That is similar to what Apple’s Match cloud server offers its users, except, according to one Google exec, his company won’t be charging an annual fee to allow users to listen to their own music on the cloud. (Apple’s Match charges a $25 annual fee for storage.) So far, Google has signed up three of the four major record labels — Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and EMI — but has not yet reached a deal with the Warner Music Group, which has a 20-percent share of the U.S. market. Among the Warner acts you won’t find on Google Music are Wiz Khalifa, Nickelback, Frank Sinatra, Green Day, Gucci Mane and Mastodon. Google has signed up a number of independent labels as well and there was the vague promise of a potential Warner deal in the future. For now, though, the search giant is differentiating itself from the competition by allowing artists who self-release their music to directly upload their songs for purchase on Google Music and set their own pricing schemes. Google Music also lets users share the music they’ve bought with friends via the Google+ social networking platform. Once you’ve purchased a song or album from the Android Market, you can then send a stream to a pal using Google+ and they can listen to the tune once for free. The service, with prices similar to those on iTunes, will also be offering a free song of the day and is currently touting exclusive tracks from a number of artists, including Coldplay, the Rolling Stones and Busta Rhymes. Will you check out the Google Music service?
