Taylor Momsen Calls Pretty Reckless’ Light Me Up ‘Honest’

‘I would consider myself a musician that also acts,’ the ‘Gossip Girl’ star tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Momsen Photo: MTV News Taylor Momsen has been teasing fans for quite some time now about her debut album . This week, she and the Pretty Reckless finally dropped Light Me Up, a searing rock album that features the “Gossip Girl” star growling over guitars. Momsen said she’s been talking about it so much that finally having it out is still kind of unbelievable. “It doesn’t exactly feel real yet. I’ve been talking about it for a long time,” she told MTV News. “I’m very excited for people to hear it.” Momsen has had a big task as she pushes to get people to hear the album. She needs to somehow convince the world that she isn’t just another starlet thinking it might be cool to release an album. For her, music is what it’s really all about. “It’s still something I have to overcome,” she explained. “I don’t think it’s fully transitioned. I would consider myself a musician that also acts. I’ve been writing songs since I was 5. It’s the thing that I chose for myself. I wasn’t put into it. I made the decision and couldn’t live without it, and hopefully people will give the record a chance and they’ll hear that. They’ll hear that it’s not some side vanity project [but] that I really, really worked on it for a long time, really my whole life.” While many of her peers in La La Land have opted to release more top 40-friendly tunes, Momsen has embraced grunge alt. “I wouldn’t have ever put out a dance record and probably never will,” she said. “I think there’s a place for all types of music, but it’s not my cup of tea. “I love classic rock,” she continued. “What I love about music is I love playing. That’s what I loved about music to begin with; that’s what I fell in love with. It was the rawness and hearing the imperfections and having the imperfections be what makes it so unique and honest. I really wanted to make an honest record. That was the outlook that kept me sane and honest.” Out of the 11 tracks on the record, Momsen said she can’t really nail down her favorite. “I think there’s something for everyone on the record,” she said. “There was no real formula to the way that we wrote. It’s hard to define that, but ‘Make Me Wanna Die’ [is my favorite song] if I had to pick one. It was the first song written for the record, so it kind of defined the direction.” Related Artists Taylor Momsen

‘X Factor’ Judge L.A. Reid Hints At Another Record Label Gig

‘I’m nobody’s fool, I didn’t give up my day job,’ former Universal exec tells Hot 97 of Sony rumors. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Jim Cantiello L.A. Reid Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Could L.A. Reid have another music executive gig up his sleeve? The music mogul resigned from his chairman post at Island Def Jam to become a judge on Simon Cowell’s “X Factor,” but he’s been dropping hints that he hasn’t completely abandoned the record label boardroom. When MTV News asked Reid whether the relationship “X Factor” has with Sony Music — the winner will get a recording contract from the label — means he may be taking on an executive role at the company in the near future, he didn’t totally dismiss the notion. “You’re good, you are so good, you’re good, let’s have that conversation another time,” Reid coyly told us. “Just hold that one for a little while; slow down, pal.” On Tuesday, during a phone interview with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, Reid dodged a similar question from the radio personality while also noting that his gig on “X Factor” is only one of his gigs and “just a little bit of a shift.” “Listen, I’m nobody’s fool, I didn’t give up my day job,” Reid told Martinez. “I had to leave Universal Music Group and try my hat on someplace else that we’ll announce. We’ll announce that one in a little while.” While at Def Jam Reid, reported to Doug Morris, who recently left his post as chairman of the Universal Music Group. Morris will formally assume the role of CEO of Sony Music on July 1. Besides a recording contract from Sony Music, the eventual winner of “X Factor” will take home $5 million in cash. Cowell, Reid and the rest of the still-unannounced judges will be seeking artists with astronomical talents to match that windfall. “I’m personally looking for artists that are along the lines of today’s pop stars,” Reid said. “Whether it be a Rihanna or a Justin Bieber or a Kanye West or a Beyonc

Mariah Carey Reportedly Not Joining ‘X Factor’

Pop diva ‘politely declined’ Simon Cowell’s offer to sit on judges’ panel, according to Essence.com. By James Dinh Mariah Carey Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images As anticipation grows for the debut of Simon Cowell’s “X Factor,” there’s one industry vet who will not appear on the reality singing show’s judging panel: Mariah Carey . Despite previous whispers about her joining the celebrity lineup , it appears that the soon-to-be mom has turned down Cowell’s request to judge the talent show, according to Essence.com . While Cowell did approach the iconic pop singer/songwriter with the request, the songstress “politely declined,” as she’s gearing up for the arrival of her twins and writing material for her next studio album. News of Carey’s decision comes just days after the pop megastar’s longtime label boss, L.A. Reid, joined the forthcoming Fox show . On Thursday, the record executive resigned from his chairman position at Island Def Jam for a spot on the judges’ panel. Reid joined the record label in 2004 and is most noted for assisting Carey with her comeback the following year. With Reid free to take up a position at Sony Music, the label that will provide the “X Factor” winner with a recording contract, rumors have swirled that Carey will wrap up her contract with Universal Music Group and follow the executive to Sony Music. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out the remaining judges who have signed on for “X Factor.” Last week, Cowell told MTV News that he was days away from unveiling the lineup. He also opened up about his efforts to collect a top-notch panel for the show. “It’s gonna be a balance between guys and girls, and it should be a balance between people who have been singers and also, like me, have worked behind the scenes and know what they’re talking about it,” the former “American Idol” judge MTV News. “It will be the best judging panel so far. I promise you: If I get the people I want, I’m really happy.” Who do you want to see judge “X Factor”? Share your ideas in the comments! Related Artists Mariah Carey

L.A. Reid, Enrique Iglesias Reportedly Tapped For ‘X Factor’

Announcement regarding judges expected this week. By Jocelyn Vena Enrique Iglesias Photo: Kristian Dowling/ WireImage With names like Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger all still floating around as possible judges, multiple sources are confirming that music executive L.A. Reid will be one of the judges on Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” when it premieres this fall. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that “it’s a done deal.” Simon Cowell told MTV News earlier this week that an announcement regarding the judges on the show would be made “within the week.” Reid will reportedly be let out of his contract with Universal Music early and may take a position with Sony Music, who will provide the show’s winner a recording contract in addition to the $5 million cash prize. Sources confirmed Reid’s departure to Billboard . In addition to the news that Reid is joining the show, there’s talk that Enrique Iglesias has been approached to host the reality singing competition, according to Deadline Hollywood . Iglesias reportedly was interested in becoming a judge rather than the host of the show, but with his own music career as red hot as ever, he may choose to stick with performing. A rep for the show had no comment regarding the rumors when contacted by MTV News. Reid’s involvement would make sense, given what Cowell shared with us regarding what he wants in the judges on the panel. “I’ve got to have people on the panel with me who can judge American talent because I’m 51 years old, I’m British and we’ve got people as young as 14 entering this competition. So I’ve got to make sure I’ve got people sitting alongside me who genuinely know what they’re talking about so that we don’t lose somebody in the audition process.” Related Artists Enrique Iglesias
