Beastie Boys’ ‘Fight For Your Right Revisited’: Five Things You Might Have Missed

Star-studded film is packed with nods to the Beasties’ past and present. By James Montgomery John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black in the “Fight For Your Right Revisited” video Photo: Capitol Records By now, you’ve probably watched — and subsequently re-watched — the Beastie Boys’ new “Fight For Your Right Revisited” film, which premiered at midnight Thursday morning (April 21) on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia. In theory, it’s a tongue-in-cheek retrospective on the Beasties’ early License To Ill days, picking up where their sublimely stoopid “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)” video left off, following Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA — as played by Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride, respectively — on a drunken spree that culminates in an epic dance battle against their future selves (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black, just in case you’re keeping score at home). But really, it works just as well as a rather-involved exercise in cameo spotting, as seemingly everyone in the universe pops up for a frame or three. Thankfully, the Beasties were nice enough to include a list of co-stars in the closing credits. Our favorites include Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci as the bewildered parents who interrogate the Beasties post-party, Will Arnett as a businessman who gives a shout-out to “Arrested Development” (“COME ON!”) and Orlando Bloom’s inexplicable three-second cameo as a window washer in a Def Jam windbreaker. But there seems to be a batch of uncredited cameos too — we’re pretty sure we saw Danny Masterson and Zach Galifianakis in there. In fact, outside of some of Michael Jackson’s biggest videos (“Liberian Girl” and “Remember the Time” come to mind), “Fight For Your Right Revisited” might very well be the most celeb-heavy video of all time. But, as we said, “Fight For Your Right” is also so much more. And while you were busy trying to keep track of all the cameos, you probably failed to notice some of the film’s subtler moments — nods to the Beasties’ past and present, the majority of which pass by with blink-and-you’ll-miss-it speed. Here are five we’ve noticed. And while we’ve watched the thing no less than a dozen times, we’re sure there are some we missed. Let us know in the comments below! Chateau Ted el Michel D

Lady Gaga Feels She’s Been ‘Probed Endlessly’ About Who She Is

‘Judas’ singer goes on curse-filled rant in new issue of NME. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Lady Gaga is on the defense these days. Fans aren’t sure how they feel about her Born This Way cover art , and in the new issue of British music magazine NME , the singer felt the need to let the world know that she’s not some gimmick and her shtick is the real deal, protruding face bones and all. “Let me tell you something. If you f—ing rip my hairbow and my wig off my f—ing head, my shoes, my bra, every single thing on my body, and you throw me on a piano with a microphone, I will f—ing make you cry,” she proclaims in the magazine, which hits newsstands on Tuesday (April 19). On the cover , Gaga appears in a see-through body suit, with zippers over her lady parts, wearing heavy eye makeup, her now signature “BTW” prosthetics and a wig she wore in the “BTW” video. “I feel I have been probed endlessly about who the f— I am,” she continues. “I have been quite open about it. And still nobody seems to have a clue.” Gaga recently unveiled her second single, ” Judas ,” off her May 23 album release. Parts of the song may pay homage to some of her past hits, but it is certainly not the type of pop song that Katy Perry or Britney Spears would record. “I’m not going to start churning out what you expect,” she said. “If you want me to be a manufactured act, you can f— off.” The star also defended her prosthetics recently in Harper’s Bazaar . “Well, first of all, they’re not prosthetics. They’re my bones,” she said in the issue. “They’ve always been inside of me, but I have been waiting for the right time to reveal to the universe who I truly am. They come out when I’m inspired.” She mirrored that sentiment on her Twitter page on Tuesday, writing, ” Born This Way is who I am. An artist in a constant state of half-fantasy/half-reality at all times.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Chris Brown Says ‘Look At Me Now’ Is ‘My First Rap Video’

C.Breezy gets assists from Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes and dons Jordans for his best Mars Blackmon impression in bouncy new clip. By Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: MTV News It’s gotta be the moves. Chris Brown , all rubbery limbs and sporting a Mars Blackmon-inspired bicycle cap, shows off some fleet-footed footwork in his new “Look at Me Now” video. With looks from Young Money captain Lil Wayne and a fire-breathing Busta Rhymes, a pile of ’90s-era baggy sweats and tees, a series of ferocious dance battles, as well as an ode to those classic Nike/Jordan spots, the dizzying clip leaves you breathless. And that’s exactly how Chris wanted it. ” ‘Look at Me Now’ is kind of like my first rap, rap video,” Chris laughed when he sat down with MTV News on Friday. “I wanted to do like old school, not really old school but, like, back-in-the-day [style].” Back in the day, for the 21-year-old, meant reviving 1990s staples like “big baggy clothes” and “a lot of art, graffiti.” “I tried to blend all of those components into one and make it fun and exciting,” he told us. With the song’s swirling production (courtesy of Diplo and Jean Baptiste) setting the breakneck pace, the Collin Tilley-directed video for “Look at Me Now” lets C.Breezy showcase his inner-MC — Brown instructs his doubters to “say hi” to a section of his anatomy some fans may now be all too familiar with — but it also lets him play with his budding Renaissance Man thing, capturing Chris as crooner, dancer and artist. In several hilarious frames, the FA.M.E. singer turns up cheesing in the horn-rimmed glasses and baseball jersey that were the signature of director Spike Lee’s Mars Blackmon creation, a bespectacled superfan who hawked Jordans in the early-’90s for Nike. In those vintage ads, Mars set out to decode just what made baller Michael Jordan “the best player in the universe” — eventually ruling out the extra-long shorts, the haircut, etc., and zeroing in one element: “it’s gotta be the shoes.” “I kind of did the Mars Blackmon outfit with the Brooklyn [hat] and the whole [outfit], I always was a fan of that and that was always fresh to me when I saw Spike Lee with Jordan,” Chris explained. “So I was like, man, i’mma do that outfit just to pay tribute to him.” Of course, Chris didn’t pull off his first official hip-hop vid on his own. Assists from Lil Tunechi and Busta give the visual added heft. And Brown said the song, like the video, works because the collabos are organic. (Weezy’s a longtime collaborator and Busta’s rapid-fire flow feels tailor-made for the track.) “Working with Wayne is always incredible. I’ve had Wayne on every single album I’ve done,” he added. “Being able to work with these guys is incredible,” he said of Bus and Wayne. “I think I build most of my collaborations off of the relationships that I built with these guys over the years.” Chris’ new album, FA.M.E., drops on Tuesday. A Tribe Called Quest Say Nas ‘Initiated’ Documentary

But soon, the crew recalls to MTV News, Michael Rapaport took the reins. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip Photo: MTV News A Tribe Called Quest were approached with the idea of doing a documentary, and they couldn’t have been happier with the producer. Fellow Queens native Nas first introduced the idea of capturing the story of one of hip-hop’s greatest groups of all time. But by the time filming began, Nas receded into the background as actor Michael Rapaport took control of the project. ” ‘I want to shoot a documentary on you,’ ” Q-Tip told MTV News, recalling a conversation with Rapaport. “I had already breached Nas with the guys, and everyone was loving that idea. So I was thinking in my head … It’d be great to have someone we respect tell our story, who’s a part of it as well, and then Mike’s enthusiasm. I spoke to everyone about it. It was some hesitation [about Rapaport’s involvement]. … I think it was because Nas had initiated it.” Jarobi, who joined Sway by phone, added: “The Nas involvement kind of sweetened the deal for everybody.” According to Tribe DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad, his reservations came from Rapaport not being part of the hip-hop community. “My hesitation was purely from a position that we’re bringing someone from the outside to be a part of the inside life,” he said. “We have to make sure that people understand who this family is and capture it and deliver it the same way we live our lives. It didn’t matter if it was a rapper or not. Nas being part of it is good, ’cause it’s someone from the inside who, from a producer’s perspective, makes sure everything is what it’s supposed to be.” The project has been controversial, with Q-Tip speaking out against Rapaport and the actor still moving forward with the doc, called “Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.” Tip said the friction stemmed in part from the group’s lack of control over the story, despite being listed as producers. An e-mail from the production team was inadvertently sent Tip’s way, the rapper told MTV News, detailing plans to silence the group. That was one too many red flags for him. “All of this stuff is going on, and we’re still trying to move forward in good faith, and we see this e-mail, inadvertently, which was a godsend,” he said. “I believe that that was the universe giving that to us and showing us who we were dealing with.” Stick with MTV News all week as we reveal more of our interview with A Tribe Called Quest and their concerns about the “Beats, Rhymes and Life” documentary. ‘Thor’ Director Kenneth Branagh Dishes Plot Details After Trailer Drops

‘The story involves a clash with an ice planet and the frost giants who live therein,’ Branagh explains. By Eric Ditzian “Thor” trailer Photo: Paramount Pictures The latest “Thor” trailer spends far less time exploring the fantastical world of Asgard than it does delving into the mighty warrior’s Earth-based, conspiracy-filled, fish-out-of-water story. That’s hardly surprising. Even given the film’s Marvel badge-o-cool, a film that spans the unknown universe, touching on American scientists and mythical frosty villains, can come off a little hokey — more “Masters of the Universe” than previous Marvel blockbusters like “Iron Man.” Thus the new trailer hits on Thor’s humorous side, his ass-kicking abilities and the enemies he’ll face after being banished from his planet to our world. Precious little from Asgard can be found. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Kenneth Branagh discussed several villains that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will face. “The story involves a clash with an ice planet and the frost giants who live therein,” he said. “They — as might be suggested by the name — are enormous creatures of incredible power who have been robbed of their power and glory by Odin, Thor’s father. What fuels a lot of this intense battle is revenge. This is an angry race, trying to get back at Thor and the Asgardians, the self-proclaimed guardians of the universe.” The new footage also features several looks at the Destroyer, a metallic, fire-shooting machine that will provide a serious challenge for Thor. “This series of metal bands form a giant, walking beast and open to reveal terrifying firepower,” Branagh explained. “In the right hands, this incredibly powerful device — awesome in its killing quality — is potentially a creature of extraordinary protective powers. In the wrong hands, it is a nightmare.” Co-starring Natalie Portman, Kat Dennings and Anthony Hopkins, “Thor” hits theaters in 3-D on May 6, 2011. Will Eminem Or Justin Bieber Rule The Grammys? Oddsmakers Weigh In

Ladbrokes and Bodog both like Em and Bieber’s chances on Sunday night. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: Getty Images The 53rd annual Grammy Awards air Sunday from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and while most will be tuning in to see if Eminem can capitalize on his industry-leading 10 nominations or catch Lady Gaga performing “Born This Way” for the first time, we’ll be watching to see how all our bets panned out. See, we love gambling nearly as much as we love the Grammys (and that’s a lot ), and, with the big show just a few days away, we figured it was time to place our bets in the Big Four categories: Album, Record and Song of the Year, plus Best New Artist. And to help insure our wagering success, we’ve once again gone to two of the best oddsmakers in the universe — Ladbrokes and Bodog — to get their take on music’s biggest night. And, strangely, their picks sort of mirrored our own opinions : They both see a big night for Eminem. But unlike us , they also see Justin Bieber hoisting the hardware. And, really, who are we to disagree? After all, they’re professionals. So here, for your last-minute wagering, are Ladbrokes’ and Bodog’s odds for the 2011 Grammy Awards. Ladbrokes “The odds reflect the sensational musical year we’ve had, which makes our jobs considerably harder. When it comes to arriving at our conclusions, personal tastes do come into play, but our main job is predicting public sentiment and where we think the money will go,” Ladbrokes’ Alex Donohue said. “Some of the categories look like they have nailed-on winners — namely Eminem and Jay Z and Alicia Keys — whereas others are much closer. The quality of the short list means we can’t rule anyone out, and we’d expect one or two surprises along the way.” Album of the Year
