Kareem Hunt, NFL Star, Brutalizes Woman in Surveillance Video

Kareem Hunt, one of the top running backs in the National Football League, has been caught in the act. And the act is really quite awful. TMZ has obtained footage of Hunt violently beating a woman inside of a Cleveland hotel this past February. The surveillance footage is from February 10 at 3:22 a.m., to be exact, and it clearly depicts Hunt arguing with an unidentified 19-year old female. We see the Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro confronting his victim and then shoving her very hard, prior to the woman striking Hunt in the face. At this point, truly loses it: he pushes one of his friends into the woman and then kicks her while she's crouching on the floor. Law enforcement was called to the scene, but no arrests were made. Hunt, who led the entire league in rushing last year, was not suspended by the NFL nor disciplined in any significant way by the Chiefs. In August, team CEO Clark Hunt publicly stated in August he doubted Hunt would be suspended, meaning he was well aware of at least some kind of incident. We do not know if he saw this video or if anyone in the league office has seen the video. The situation is reminiscent of what transpired with Ray Rice. Also a talented running back in 2014, Rice was suspended for two games for punching his girlfriend. But then this CRAZY footage of Rice knocking her unconscious went public and the league increased its penalty, causing many to wonder why the NFL needed videographic evidence when Rice had already admitted to punching his loved one.  Commissioner Roger Goodell has become infamous for failing to appropriately deal with players who beat women. At the time of this Hill incident, the woman told police the entire thing started because Hunt kicked her out of his room after she refused to hook up with one of the men in his entourage. Sounds very classy of him. In December of 2014, meanwhile, Hunt's wide receiver teammate Tyreek Hill – then a star on Oklahoma State University’s football and track teams – was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery by strangulation. According to reports, he allegedly punched and choked his girlfriend… who was pregnant at the time. Watch the video now to be very disgusted by Kareem Hunt.

Stacey Abrams Is Not Done With Brian Kemp And His Jim Crow Tactics

Go here to read the rest:

S tacey Abrams  may have acknowledged that  Brian Kemp  won the election for governor of Georgia, but she is not giving up on fighting for every vote to be counted. Several lawsuits have been filed against Kemp, and now Abrams is reportedly filing another one. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction Abrams told Chris Hayes on MSNBC, “It was not a free and fair election. Brian Kemp oversaw — for eight years — the systemic dismantling of our democracy and that meant there could not be free and fair elections in Georgia this year.” However,  Abrams is doing something about it. She explained, “We have started an organization called Fair Fight Georgia. We are going to file a federal lawsuit — next week — that will allege the gross mismanagement that we have seen and that we have been able to document.” She continued, “In fact, we thought we were going to go forward with the case today or this week, but we have gotten so many more — so much more information from voters, so many more calls, that we’re continuing to gather affidavits and we’re going to push it to next week, given the holidays,” Abrams explained. Watch below: Kemp allegedly (and more than likely, fraudulently — considering he is legendary for voter suppression ) received 50.2 percent of the vote and he would have needed to be under 50 percent for there to be a runoff. Weeks before the election, former President Jimmy Carter called on Kemp to resign . He refused and waited until two days after the election to offer his resignation, arguably, after his corruption had already been done. Keep on fighting, Stacey Abrams! Although a doctor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston advised him to undergo chemotherapy treatments, he refused. The 63-year-old explained, “I’m deciding to really take my life and use it as a mouthpiece for other people. I just want to use my life in a way to help someone. So I can say, ‘I’m Gregg and I have cancer,’ but I will be a survivor.” Nene Leakes, 50, said, “Chemo is not something that Gregg is thinking about doing at the moment. Obviously we hear all the reports of people doing chemo and being very sick. So he feels like if there’s any other options that he can take, I’d rather take those options and let chemo sit on the back burner for now.” Imaging tests did reveal that after the surgery there was no evidence of cancer in his body. Nonetheless, the doctor strongly recommended chemotherapy so the cancer does not return. According to BlackDoctors.org , African-Americans have a 20 percent higher risk of developing colon cancer and a 45 percent higher mortality rate. Prayers up for Gregg, Nene and their entire family. Empire’s Toby Onwumere On How Jamal And Kai’s Relationship Impacts The Culture

Read the original here:

Source: Jean Whiteside / Fox Season 5 of Empire finds the Lyon empire in a dark place. The family business was stolen, money has dried up and Cookie and Lucious are scrambling to figure out how to get back on top. However, one of the brightest spots is Jamal’s new love affair with Kai. We knew it was meant to be after Kai managed to escape a hostile situation in Nigeria, and even before that, he saved Jamal from being drugged and assaulted. Jamal and Kai’s chemistry is undeniable and the actor who plays the latter, Toby Onwumere, is excited to take on such an important storyline. Audiences were first introduced to Onwumere as Capheus on Netflix’s Sense8 , but with Empire , his second major role thus far, he’s helping to shift the narrative about how characters with HIV are portrayed. Hello Beautiful caught up with the USC grad about how he landed his latest role and the impact he hopes to have on the culture.  —Starrene Rhett Rocque What do you look for in the roles you go up for and how did Kai match up to that? Considering that this is my second real role, I guess in general I like to look for some type of variety from the last one. Right. Because you’re in Sense8 and that’s completely different. Exactly. But I like both in like the storytelling and the character, and how it’s done, and I appreciated the juxtaposition between Sense8 and Empire . You know, something kind of, super niche on Netflix and this one is like, Empire is empire, as the name suggests. It is an empire. So, yeah, I really like that, and as far as Kai goes, I kind of knew, I didn’t have the script, but I knew about the character, and I definitely knew kind of the subject matter that we were trying to delve into. And, the manner in which that happened, telling the story is important. One, to the LGBTQ community and to educating the general populous at large. I think that’s important. The thing about Kai that I really like is you know with him and his HIV status—the character doesn’t feel sorry for himself and he’s not played in a terminal fashion. You see him hospital bed once as of now, but it’s not really due to the HIV, it’s more due to the injury he sustained when he was abroad, and he’s a character with integrity and with purpose and the HIV is not the totality of his life. And he still finds love. He finds love with one of the biggest pop stars in the world and they still have a very robust relationship despite the ailment. What was the process of getting the role like, did you get to meet Lee Daniels then? I didn’t meet Lee Daniels. It’s funny, I auditioned for it for maybe like two or three days. Then I [was] in New York about to go see some musicals and like kick it with some people I know, and I get a call from my agent, like, “You need to come home [to LA] because you have this chemistry read with Jussie.” So, I get my plane ticket back, and I think the next day I meet Brett Mahoney, some other producers, and then I meet Jussie. But, then I realized, the date that I was auditioning, Jussie was in the casting office with Leah Daniels Butler, and he passed by and I remember him saying, “Oh, I want to see who’s auditioning for this.” I remember that vividly. I always joke about it with him. I was like, “I saw you the first day”, and I looked at you like we’re about to do this together.” And then we had the chemistry reading; it was fantastic and I go home and I’m talking with my roommate later that night, and my agent and manager called me that I got it. That is awesome! You guys really do have amazing chemistry. Kai is actually my favorite boyfriend of Jamal. Talk that talk, please! Talk about their storyline and why it’s important. Well, you know that we meet in London and then we come over here. And then I get to see firsthand the quote-unquote energy of the Lyon family and how it’s affecting Jamal. And the beautiful thing about our relationship is, by telling the story I think we break a lot of stereotypes about relationships in general. We’re showing two normal people, and we’re really big on the normalcy of their relationship. And then if you bring the HIV into it—in mainstream culture—I don’t know that you see a relationship like ours. Somebody whose HIV positive, but it’s not treated in this super medical way. And I know that Jussie is really big, very very big on that. To like change the narrative of what it is to have, it can be undetected and bringing up things like PrEP. I just think we are changing the narrative a bit. Did you learn anything new because I think the PrEP thing is new information to a lot of people? I had known about PrEP, because I have some friends, I have maybe like two or three degrees of separation from people that have HIV so I know about PrEP. I know about being undetectable, but there are still quite a bit of people who maybe have outdated information on HIV. They might think it’s more terminal than it really is. That goes back to the 80’s propaganda of what HIV was and how it was a disease for the disenfranchised, and the LGBTQ community, but I do think that the scene with Cookie is such an amazing scene because it shows that nobody’s really immune to the lack of information. And there are people in your family who mean well, they mean the most positive, but due to the lack of information or the misinformation they kind of lead in the wrong way. What’s been the feedback thus far with you doing this role? Especially because, you know how sometimes, people see you in a role, and they think that you are actually that person. Oh, I get it so much, which is par for the course [and] that’s totally fine. My DM’s have been blowing up. Somebody even inquired if I really had HIV, which was interesting, but I think it’s all par for the course. The feedback has been, a sea of great stuff, it’s been fantastic, and that’s what I like. I’m actually interested somewhat in hearing it all. How’s your family reacting? My parents are in Nigeria right now, and my dad is a professor at this university in Imo State, and he is up to date. I was talking to him yesterday, and that’s so, pardon my language, that’s so fucking cool! He tells me, all the girls in his class watch the show religiously, and when they see the opening credits, they recognize the last name as the same name as their professor, and they’re like, “Wait, is that your son?” And my dad is like “Yeah, yeah, that’s my boy.” And they are like, “NO, I’m marrying him, I don’t know, what do I have to do, but we’re making it happen!” It’s just cool having my dad recap the events to me, and he’s like, “Why you let him talk to you like that?” Having him invested in the story like that, and talking to me about it, it really is special because I feel like my parents in particular afforded me this life. Empire can take you in twists and turns, so how can we brace ourselves to feel after tonight’s episode? You should brace yourself emotionally and hold onto people dear to you. I’m so bad at this part because I feel like if I say anything I’ll give it away. But we know it’s going to be a doozy, right? Always, it’s empire. We just want Jamal to have nice things, though. We’re gonna take care of him. RELATED POSTS ‘Empire’ Recap: Cookie And Lucious Kill Kingsley With Kindness ‘Empire’ Recap: Cookie Lands A Promising New Signee

Coincidence? Black People In Georgia Typically Get The Oldest Voting Machines, Increasing Chances Of Error

View original post here:

A n often overlooked way that suppression of Black votes occurs has been through the use of ancient, error-prone paperless voting machines. Many of these ATM-style pieces of aging equipment have been around for nearly two decades and were riddled with known problems. Still, they were being used for Tuesday’s pivotal Midterm elections that carry a world of political consequence. The practice was particularly problematic in Georgia, where all voters were using the same equipment. But there was an important distinction to be made: voters in the poorest communities, which many times is synonymous for where Black folks live, tend to have the oldest of the machines made available to them, increasing errors for a demographic that has traditionally been underserved politically. “The counties and cities with the fewest resources are voting on the oldest equipment that tend to have the most problems,”  Edgardo Cortés , an election security advisor at the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program, confirmed to NewsOne during an interview on Monday. Cortés said the Brennan Center, a nonpartisan law and policy institute at New York University Law School, has been making a big push nationally, including in Georgia, to get states and local governments to get rid of the paperless equipment. Using them could result in voters continuing to see their votes being switched, as was the case in Georgia during early voting in the weeks leading up to Election Day. That probability far outweighed the chances of any electronic interference, Cortés said. Making matters worse, there is no paper trail that could verify the voter’s intent. See Also: Judge Rejects Brian Kemp’s Georgia Absentee Ballot Suppression Attempt Not including printed paper or provisional ballots, there were only five states nationwide that were exclusively using paperless electronic voting machines that don’t provide printed documentation of the voter’s choices. Those states are Delaware, Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey, and South Carolina. Another eight states, including Texas and Pennsylvania, were also using paperless machines in some of their jurisdictions. Predictably, the problem all came down to money for these states’ underserved communities. “They don’t have the finances and resources to switch out the newer equipment,” Cortés said. “Because of that, you start to see a divide in the voting experience depending on where you live.” Georgia’s election was under a microscope for good reason. Electronic machines there have been  vulnerable to hacking and were  notoriously prone to errors . The main problem involved voters selecting a candidate on the screen before the machine automatically cast the ballot for a different candidate. Errors with the machines tended to involve voter selections automatically switching from Democratic to Republican candidates. All hands are on deck working overtime to help flex the power of the Black vote for the midterm elections. #RepresentTheVote https://t.co/SKgVhIeqHz — NewsOne (@newsone) November 2, 2018 Compounding those reports was the glaring conflict of interest from Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp , the Republican candidate for governor who was also overseeing the state’s election system. He was running against Stacey Abrams , who could make history as the nation’s first African-American woman governor. The two candidates were in a neck-and-neck race, so faulty machines could conceivably hand the election to Kemp. This all came against the backdrop of voting rights groups filing federal lawsuits against Kemp for rejecting certain absentee ballots , blocking approximately 53,000 voter registration forms and purging some 700,000 voters from the state’s voting rolls—all targeting Black voters. The problems with Georgia’s electronic machines were not new, and Kemp has long resisted using a paper ballot backup system since there was no incentive to change it because the errors favor his party. With Election Day here, it’s too late to make changes to the equipment. Cortés advised voters to review their summary screen before casting their vote to ensure that their choices were selected. And as a contingency, officials should maintain enough paper and provisional ballots on hand if machines don’t work. Ciara Sivels Becomes First Black Woman To Earn Nuclear Engineering Ph.D. From University Of Michigan

Link:

B lack women are raising the bar in the realm of academia. In July, Miami native Mareena Robinson Snowden became the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and now another woman has hit the same milestone at another institution. According to the Huffington Post , Ciara Sivels has become the first African-American woman to earn a nuclear engineering Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Dr. Ciara Sivels is 27 years old. https://t.co/tZXmP1JdoS — HuffPost BlackVoices (@blackvoices) November 2, 2018 The institution has one of the top nuclear engineering programs in the country, the news outlet writes. 27-year-old Sivels—who hails from Virginia—submitted her thesis titled “Development of an Advanced Radioxenon Detector for Nuclear Explosion Monitoring” last month and earned her doctorate degree. Sivels wasn’t always passionate about STEM. She initially wanted to pursue a career in the culinary industry. It was her high school chemistry teacher who convinced her to give STEM a try. “I was originally going to go to culinary school. In my junior and senior years, I was in culinary arts,” she told the news outlet. “I remember the teacher from that class saying, ‘Oh, you’re really smart, you should think about doing something other than culinary.’ So that’s kinda how I switched over into engineering and eventually ended up at MIT and ended up in the nuclear program.” Sivels’ academic journey was far from easy. Although at times she wanted to give up she decided to stay the course because she realized that what she was working towards was something that was bigger than her. Now that she has her Ph.D. under her belt, Sivels is focused on becoming a professor. She’s relocating to Baltimore and will work in Johns Hopkins University’s physics department. She believes in the power of representation and hopes that her journey will inspire other people of color to pursue careers in STEM. “My two big things are representation and exposure. I still feel like exposure is key and representation also helps, because you have people that look like you that can help pull you up when you’re failing,” she said. Sivels’ accomplishment is one step forward towards changing the narrative about Black women in STEM. According to Catalyst Inc. , Black, Latinx, and Asian women made up less than 10 percent of engineers and scientists in 2015.
