L ast year, law school graduate Ieshia Champs posted a graduation photo of her and her five children. The Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law graduate has had a tough journey. She grew up in the foster-care system where she encountered traumatic experiences, dropped out of high school, and became a single mom at an early age. She’s also been through a lot of loss. When trying to get on the right track she was laid off from her job, experienced homelessness, and the father of two of her children succumbed to his battle with cancer. She used those experiences as fuel and continued to focus on her family and education; which has ultimately led her to where she’s at in her career now. County Attorney Vince Ryan believes that her story can serve as motivation for others. “Ms. Champs is an inspiration to all who are faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles in life,” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “We are fortunate that her path has brought her to our Office where she can continue to make a difference in the lives of those impacted by Children’s Protectives Services in Harris County.” Champs says coming into the office is surreal for her. “Sometimes I forget that I’m an attorney until I walk in this office and realize, ‘Hey, this is real’,” she told KHOU11 . “I feel like as a mother, I gave them something to look forward to and something that they can also give their children in the future.” SEE ALSO: #BlackExcellence: Single Mother Of 5 To Graduate Magna Cum Laude From Law School Rutgers Law School Appoints First Black Woman Dean [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3844029″ overlay=”true”]

Catherine Agro: Meet This Season’s Bachelor Villain! See Her Bikini Body!

To those who tuned in for The Bachelor premiere on Monday, the following is not exactly breaking news. But it still must be said: Catherine Agro is not shy. The aspiring wife of Colton Underwood arrived at the ABC mansion this past Monday night showing off both her legs and her dog, Lucy. She made a solid first impression on the famous virginal star of Season 23, but she made a very different kind of impression on her fellow suitors. Argo swooped in and stole Colton away conversations with other women on four separate occasions during this extended premiere, setting an unofficial record for interruptions, according to the Internet. As you can see below, other contestants were not happy about it. The Bachelor Sneak Peek: Is This the Season 23 Villain? But it’s clear Argo doesn’t really care. Did she head into this season with the goal of acting as some sort of villain? We can’t say for sure. She just seems to be embracing it at this point. In her Instagram bio, which Catherine made public shortly after she started to gain some notoriety, the new reality star reveals that she is a twin, and an aspiring DJ. She also says that she is a Christian and a real estate agent who attended the University of Florida. Oh, and she also poses like this: “extra extra read all about it,” Catherine captioned this racy bikini photo. Doesn’t sound like someone who plans on running for the attention bound to come her way, does it? Catherine also tags the Bachelor Winter Games Instagram account in this picture, seemingly trying to get that program’s attention … and possibly hoping for an invitation to the show. This certainly wouldn’t be the first time a suitor used The Bachelor as a springboard to more appearances within the ABC reality show franchise. But it does appear as if Colton may need to ask himself whether Catherine is in this for the right reasons. Will her aggressive approach work? You can visit our section of The Bachelor spoilers to see who advances to the final four, final three and then who is chosen as the winner. You can also click down below and scroll all around to read some whoppers about the episodes ahead. Without giving too much away, let’s just tease that you’ll be stunned by how many women simply quit the series this season. It’s true! Once news spread about her accomplishments in the realm of sports, she became an athlete to watch. She was the first Little League player to grace a national cover of Sports Illustrated , she landed a spot on TIME ’s “25 Most Influential Teens of 2014 List,” and she secured a book deal. The world was watching to see what her next move in sports would be. Davis recently inked a letter-of-intent to play at Hampton. She was considering other schools that included Coppin State University, Southern University, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania, and Bethune-Cookman University, but thought that Hampton would be a good fit. Angela Nicholson —the head softball coach at Hampton—says she had no clue that Davis wanted to play softball in college until she received an email from her a few months ago. “She sent me an email, and I invited her to camp. She came to camp, and she was phenomenal. That’s how it all started,” she told the news outlet. “Having Mo’ne is great. I know she doesn’t want it to be about her, and neither do we. We want her to have a great experience and be like everybody else.” She will reportedly join the team as a middle infielder. Davis currently attends Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia where she plays softball, basketball, and soccer. #BlackExcellence: 83-Year-Old Earns Ph.D. From Louisiana State University

A n 83-year-old man is living proof that it’s never too late to bring your goals to fruition. After dropping out of school in the sixth grade, Vietnam War veteran Johnnie Jones received his doctorate degree on Friday from Louisiana State University, WFAB reported. On Friday, the 83-year-old will receive his doctorate in social work at LSU. He hopes to begin law school next fall. https://t.co/tkgSBnSflK — The Advocate (@theadvocatebr) December 11, 2018 The milestone was historic as he became the eldest student to receive a graduate degree during a fall commencement at the school and the oldest Black person to ever receive an LSU degree. When he was 18 years old, Jones joined the Marine Corps. While deployed in Vietnam he decided that he wanted to get back on track with his education. He noticed that individuals who had high school diplomas and college degrees were getting better employment opportunities. After earning his diploma, he took junior college classes and was then able to take advantage of a program offered by Louisiana State University while serving. After retiring from the military in 1973 he got his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Hawaii and went on to pursue his master’s degree at LSU. While chasing after his academic goals he worked at a restaurant and later as a warden at the Louisiana Department of Corrections to support his family. Although he has several degrees under his belt, he doesn’t intend on stopping his academic journey anytime soon. He plans on starting law school next fall. “Age is an artificial constraint. There’s nothing magical about 65, 75, 95, 105. Your behavior, your activities should be guided by your physical fitness and your mental fitness,” he told The Advocate . “We’ve been so socialized to believe that once you hit a certain age, I’ve done my thing, so I’m going to sit back and enjoy life. OK, if that’s your thing, that’s your thing. But to me, age doesn’t mean that much. It’s whether or not I have the ability to be doing the things I need to be doing.” SEE ALSO: Jalen Rose’s Detroit High School Has A 93 Percent Graduation Rate 63-Year-Old Father And Son Share Graduation Day Together [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3840439″ overlay=”true”]

Michelle Obama Surprises Black College Students In Detroit

W hile traveling across the country for her Becoming book tour, former first lady Michelle Obama has been leaving a trail of inspiration in every city that she’s visited. During a recent stop in Detroit, a group of Black students from Wayne State University were in for a surprise when Obama gave them an unexpected visit, the Detroit Free Press reported. Michelle Obama stuns Wayne State Uni. students at the Motown Museum https://t.co/BWHS4PTXMr — Detroit Free Press (@freep) December 11, 2018 With every tour stop for her best-selling book, Obama has made the effort to go beyond the Q&A sessions about her memoir and interact with individuals in local communities. A group of young Black men from Wayne State was invited by her Reach Higher initiative to have an intimate discussion with her brother Craig Robinson and actor Keegan-Michael Key about the importance of education at the Motown Museum. Unbeknownst to them, Obama would be joining the conversation too. Before her appearance at Little Caesars Arena, she stopped by the museum to surprise the students and was greeted with applause. The students then candidly shared personal experiences about finding their place as Black men in predominately white spaces. One student shared the struggle of having to continuously justify who he was. “Trust me. It will continue beyond college, no matter where we go. There were people who thought that Barack couldn’t be a good president. There were people who questioned whether I would be a good first lady. My brother gets questioned all the time about whether he’s qualified or able, and we all face those things,” she said, according to the news outlet. “That doesn’t go away. But you have to practice knowing who you are and focus on just doing the work day by day. That’s really all you can do.” She encouraged all of the young men to push forward and continue to reach new heights of success. Obama is reaching new heights of her own. According to Forbes , she has now sold 3 million copies of her book since it was released in November. ‘RHOAS11’ Recap: Porsha Brings Dennis To Tears With Her Major News

Read more here:

Source: Jason LaVeris / Getty Tonight’s episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta is mostly about the Kandi, Dennis, Porsha situation again, as well as the events that go down at NeNe’s couples night event. But let’s dial it back a bit. We start the episode with a glimpse of Leon, in all his forever fine glory. Leon and Cynthia are preparing to see Noelle off to college. She has decided to go to Howard University. Let’s fast forward. Kandi and Porsha actually meet up to discuss Kandi’s spot getting blown up at Cynthia’s wine tasting. Kandi tries to explain herself again. She says she knew two girls that Dennis dated, got the story about the tattoos, and felt the need to bring it up yatta yatta. It’s not like they’re friends. Kandi says she doesn’t want to be in a bad place with Porsha, so why does she keep bringing Dennis’ dating history up behind Porsha’s back knowing dang well it could cause a problem with this group of women? None of it matters though, because Porsha doesn’t care. Nothing will stand in the way of the happiness she is after. Plus, Porsha is really coming from the perspective of, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her. Anyway, we then meet Tanya again. She’s NeNe’s friend, new satellite character, and a tech entrepreneur. Tanya is rich, full of herself and extra. She seems more RHOP than RHOA but so far she has been fitting in. She’s even going to bring her man to NeNe and Gregg’s couples night out. The theme for the latter is “Boobs and Bourbon.” Now we’re at NeNe and Gregg’s couple’s night event. Everyone comes through. Cynthia brings her friend Marcus. Marlo shows up with a man who resembles BubbaSparkxxx, but she refuses to reveal how they met, and NeNe’s spirited friend, Yavonna, comes through too. Porsha is the last to arrive with Dennis. We’re all nervous because this could go either way since Dennis knows that Kandi has been talking smack about him. However, Dennis keeps it cute and cordial. That crisis is averted but then we get back to Yovana being super extra. It turns out that Yovana and Eva attended Clark Atlanta University together. They don’t know each other but Yovana points out that Eva is good friends with her good friend. By this point, Yovana is already rubbing the girls the wrong way with her brash delivery but then it gets worse when she says she has a problem with Eva. Eva is looking like: Basically, Yovana explains that Eva pretended like they never even met when they first showed up to the dinner. Eva said but she actually doesn’t ever recall meeting her and this sets Yovana off even more. Yovana feels some type of way and states that it’s impossible for Eva to not know her because she was that b–ch in school. Everyone, including Yovana’s fiance, is looking like: NeNe squashes any impending drama with the announcement that they’ve organized a surprise couple’s trip. Aaaaaw shoot! You know it’s about to be some drama, especially if thirsty Yovana shows up! Finally, we end the episode with Porsha celebrating Dennis’ birthday. It’s an extra special celebration because this is when Porsha announces that she’s pregnant. She delivers the news by handing Dennis a gift (and eventually a positive pregnancy test). It’s a box of baby booties and he is so thrilled that he tears up. Porsha is going to have to keep the stress down, which is hard dealing with this group of women. It will be interesting to see how the couple’s trip goes and how they take it when Porsha reveals the news. Scholarship For HBCU Students Created To Honor Legacy Of Richard Collins III

Original post:

T he legacy of Richard Collins III —a student who tragically lost his life on the University of Maryland’s campus last year—will be kept alive through the creation of scholarships for HBCU students in the Maryland area, the Journal for Blacks in Higher Education reported. An annual $1 million scholarship was launched in honor of Richard Collins III, a Bowie State University student killed in May 2017. It will support ROTC cadets at all four of Maryland's HBCU's. https://t.co/qbOcD6ncMN — WJZ | CBS Baltimore (@wjz) November 29, 2018 Collins—who was a senior at Bowie State University—was the victim of a hate crime, the news outlet writes. While visiting the University of Maryland he was fatally stabbed by a white man. Collins had so much going for him. He was a 2nd Lt. in the Reserve Officer Training Corps and was slated to graduate just days before he lost his life. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan recently shared that the state would fund a $1 million scholarship—dubbed the 2nd Lt. Richard W. Collins III Leadership with Honor Scholarship—which will be awarded to students who attend historically Black colleges and universities and are a part of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Students who attend Coppin State University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, and Bowie State University will be eligible for the scholarship. The families of several individuals who lost their lives to violence have chosen to honor their legacies by helping others further their education. The family of Tamara E. O’Neal —a medical student who was murdered by her boyfriend in Chicago—launched the Tamara E. O’Neal Memorial Fund as an avenue to create scholarships for young, Black medical students. “Tamara was an incredible advocate, particularly for physicians of color or anyone that may have expressed an inkling of doubt, as her disarming nature and warm smile made it easy for even the shyest aspiring doctor to inquire about the amazing job she loved, and in due time lend herself as a resource,” said one of her classmates in a statement . Race Matters: Arizona Lawmaker Doubles Down On Saying Black People Don’t ‘Blend In’ With Society

Source: Robert Alexander / Getty David Stringer Doesn’t See A Problem With His Racist Comments An Arizona state legislator with a long history of anti-immigrant comments is facing calls to resign after he told university students that black people “don’t blend in” to society like European immigrants do. Representative David Stringer, who represents the Yavapai County area, made the comments after a public lecture at Arizona State University on November 19, during which a history professor, Donald Critchlow, discussed the 2018 midterm elections. Mr. Critchlow said that the students recorded a “private conversation” they had with Mr. Stringer after the lecture, which was  sent to local news outlets  last week. In said recordings, Mr. Stringer can be heard saying that he doesn’t think America is a “successful nation.” He follows up by saying that “diversity is relatively new” in our country, and that while European immigrants assimilated to society, “that’s not the case with African-Americans or other racial groups because they don’t melt in.” He continued on to say that this was connected to “white flight” and people moving out of Detroit and Baltimore. Stringer said that immigration was affecting states like Arizona in a “dramatic way.” He claimed that it cost more to educate children who don’t speak English as their first language, which he described as a “burden” on taxpayers. He also said that he wants to slow down immigration because it is happening too fast. The context of the conversation and how it began were not immediately clear from these recordings. Since his comments became public, there has been widespread condemnation of Stringer’s words. The Prescott City Council voted 6 to 1 to pass a resolution asking for Mr. Stringer’s resignation. David Stringer says he doesn’t intend to resign for his comments, though–because to him, it’s all true, he explained to the  Prescott Valley Town Council on Thursday evening. “I believe that everything I‘ve said, if you look at what I actually said, is defensible, that it is truthful, that it is factually accurate, that it can be supported by academic research,” the Republican said. Though calls for his resignation have been made, not a single Republican in the Arizona House has called for Stringer’s resignation.
