Source: Christian Petersen / Getty Demarcus Cousins Is Getting His Own Showtime Documentary Showtime announced on Friday that they finally have a premiere date for The Resurgence: DeMarcus Cousins , a documentary that will follow the basketball star’s comeback from a career-threatening injury. The film is set to debut on the premium cable network at 8 p.m. on April 13. According to Showtime, The Resurgence is going to provide viewers with “unfettered access” to DeMarcus Cousins throughout his very emotional comeback from a career-threatening Achilles injury, along with his “roller coaster ride through free agency that resulted in a stunning one-year deal with the Golden State Warriors. In a statement released by the network, Stephen Espinoza–chief of the network’s sports programming–said the film “delivers the intimate account and high-stakes drama of one of the most misunderstood men in sports. DeMarcus reveals himself as never before—a relatable man whose fiercely competitive personality, daily struggles and triumphs embody the nature of sport.” The Resurgence is going to include exclusive interviews with teammates, coaches and NBA insiders closest to the story, which includes John Calipari, who coached Cousins at University of Kentucky, former Sacramento Kings’ head coach Mike Malone, Warriors coach Steve Kerr, along with current and former teammates Isaiah Thomas, Matt Barnes, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and more. Since the NBA’s free agency period last summer, the network has released a series of short behind-the-scenes clips online to introduce the project, which includes the moment when Cousins shocked fans by announcing he would join the Warriors for the 2018-’19 season. Source: Mark Wilson/Getty Images / Getty Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring Admits Blackface, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax Accused Of Sexual Assualt Throw the whole state away. There’s more political strife in Virginia in the midst of the Virginia Governor blackface scandal. As previously reported Democratic Governor Ralph Northam (above) was outed by a right-wing website who published a photo from Northam’s medical school yearbook that shows him in blackface and standing next to a man in a KKK outfit. He at first admitted that it was him in the photo but then recanted . There are now feverish calls for him to step down, calls that he’s casually ignoring. Now the third in line to be Governor if Northam steps down is confessing that he too has worn blackface. Attorney General Mark Herring admitted Wednesday that he wore blackface to dress up like a rapper at an 80s college party. Source: Katherine Frey/Washington Post via Getty Images / Getty In a statement obtained by CNBC , he said that while an undergraduate at the University of Virginia “some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time, like Kurtis Blow, and perform a song.” “It sounds ridiculous even now writing it. But because of our ignorance and glib attitudes – and because we did not have an appreciation for the experiences and perspectives of others – we dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup, Herring said. “This was a onetime occurrence and I accept full responsibility for my conduct.” Just four days ago Herring criticized Governor Northham and said “it is no longer possible” for him to remain in office. If you couldn’t believe that things would get much worse, hold onto your wigs. Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, also a Democrat, has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Fairfax is second in line to be Governor. Source: Paul Morigi/Getty Images / Getty That woman, Vanessa Tyson, an associate professor of politics at Scripps College in California, has hired Christine Blasey Ford’s legal team to represent her. Fairfax has denied her accusation and said what happened between them was “consensual.” If all three of the Democrats resign, the next Virginia Governor will be Republican Kirk Cox. Cox is the current state’s speaker of the House of Delegates. All top VA officials wore blackface except for the one with a black face who has been accused of sexual assault. Is that…accurate? — Felonious Munk IS Blackface (@Felonious_munk) February 6, 2019 Now, THIS is a mess. Who do YOU think will be Virginia’s next Governor when Northam (finally) resigns???

Source: Allison Joyce/Getty Images / Getty February 5, 2019, Marks Trayvon Martin’s 24th Birthday Today would have been Trayvon Martin’s birthday. The 17-year-old Florida teen who was gunned down in 2012 would’ve been 24-years-old today if his life wasn’t tragically cut short. His mother Sybrina Fulton recently spoke at Oregon State University and spoke on the need for unity. Sybrina who helms the Trayvon Martin foundation told students “we need to learn how to all get along together.” “The time is always right to do the right thing,” said Sybrina. “My disappointment, my sadness, my hurt, my pain, I put all of that in my foundation.” Trayvon’s being remembered today by several celebrities including Ava Duvernay who’s using his passing as a teachable moment about white privilege. When people ask me what white privilege is…. Imagine if this was a white boy in a hoodie with a bag of skittles who was just trying to walk home. https://t.co/ty8ogrzDtC — Ava DuVernay (@ava) February 5, 2019 Others are also pointing out the timing of Liam Neeson admitting that he wanted to kill a random black man after his friend was raped on what would’ve been the teen’s birthday. We are discussing Liam Neeson’s comment about wanting to kill any Black person the same time of Trayvon Martin’s Birthday. — Preston Mitchum (@PrestonMitchum) February 5, 2019 Wow. R.I.P. B lack women are displaying excellence in all fields, especially in the realm of sports. A group of women from Antigua recently hit a major milestone by becoming the first all-Black women’s rowing team to cross the Atlantic Ocean, Black Enterprise reported. Meet the first all-black women’s rowing team to cross the Atlantic Ocean. https://t.co/BHM4a2X4aN — Black Enterprise (@blackenterprise) February 1, 2019 The women—dubbed Team Antigua-The Island Girls—competed in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The competition is a premier event in ocean rowing. The team—which included Kevinia Francis , Christal Clashing , Elvira Bell , and Samara Emmanuel —embarked on their journey on December 12 in the Canary Islands and returned to Antigua at the end of January. Their journey was nothing short of grueling but the women pushed through and persevered. The entire trip was a total of 3,000 miles and they dealt with sea sickness and complications with their boat. Each woman brought their vast athletic experience to the competition. Francis was known for playing a handful of sports including track-and-field, basketball and cycling, Clashing is a former Olympian who became the first woman swimmer to represent Antigua and Barbuda at the Olympics, Bell is a swim instructor, and Emmanuel’s experience as a sailor spans over a decade. Junella King —a 17-year-old who served as an alternate for the team—worked as a sailing instructor. The competition was about more than rowing, the focus was on social good as well. The team competed to raise $150,000 for a charity called Cottage of Hope which focuses on providing shelter for orphaned girls who experience abuse. The women received a warm welcome home, as the government closed schools and other institutions early so that locals could congratulate the team. “While this is the third time a team from Antigua and Barbuda has entered the Challenge, we are truly proud that the first all-black female team to row the Atlantic is comprised of four courageous Antiguan women,” Charles Fernandez , Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism, told Caribbean Life News . “This is history in the making, and it will truly be a momentous occasion for Antigua and Barbuda.” SEE ALSO: Hampton University Becomes First HBCU To Have Women’s Triathlon Team Tennis Star Naomi Osaka Slated To Ink Adidas’ Biggest Deal With A Woman Athlete [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3845042″ overlay=”true”]

S everal Black athletes are paying it forward by giving back to the communities that they grew up in. Just days after it was reported that NFL star Marshawn Lynch was combating gentrification in his hometown of Oakland, NBA player Kevin Durant has opened a new after-school center for youth in Prince George’s County, Maryland, ESPN reported. On Wednesday, Kevin Durant attended the grand opening of “The Durant Center” in Suitland, MD. Opened in partnership with College Track, The Durant Center is a state-of-the-art facility aimed at helping low-income and underserved students enroll and graduate from college. pic.twitter.com/YIRxzTNrGC — The Undefeated (@TheUndefeated) January 24, 2019 The facility—which is named after the Golden State Warriors player—will serve as a resource center that provides tools and assistance for youth to further their education, the news outlet writes. Through the center, students will be able to secure college scholarships and receive financial help and tutoring. The NBA player provided $10 million for the creation of College Track at The Durant Center. Durant unveiled the new center before a group of local children who will be involved in the program on Wednesday. It was a full-circle moment for him; the center is located just a few blocks away from where he grew up. “To have this as a kind of staple and my family’s name on it and it’s doing so much for kids, man. It’s one of the greatest accomplishments so far in my career,” he said in an interview with the Washington Post . “As a basketball player it’s easy for us to say, ‘Let’s create an AAU team or let’s do a camp.’ As you get older, you start to look for bigger ways to impact. I see my peers, and not just NBA players but athletes in general, but just trying to push the future forward, push the youth forward.” The opening of the center comes months after Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James opened the I Promise School for at-risk youth in Akron.
