The Lagos, Nigeria native launched the company in 2013 with the mission to utilize augmented reality as a learning tool. The robot figures—which are called MekaMons—can be controlled with smartphones and players can utilize a Bluetooth functionality for their robots to battle each other. Users can also use code commands through Apple’s Swift Playgrounds coding app to control their robots. Adekunle—a graduate of the University of West England—says he couldn’t reach this level in the tech industry without the guidance and support from his alma mater. “When I started out, I had amazing support from my university and the Bristol Robotics Lab – but communicating the potential of MekaMon, as well as the technology itself, to people outside of that world required some imagination,” he told Pulse . “We believe that this technology has huge potential within STEM education – both as a teaching aid and as a means to inspire the next generation – whatever their backgrounds – to aspire to a career in STEM.” Adekunle says that he wants to use his journey to inspire the youth in Africa to pursue careers in STEM. “I hope that I might be a positive example of what is possible for kids in Nigeria with the same passion for dissecting technology and developing devices that I did at their age,” he told the news outlet. A 20-year-old Black college student has died following what his family said was a fraternity hazing incident in California late last week. Police are investigating the death and are considering hazing as a possible factor. RELATED:  Hazing Horrors: More Students Being Beaten, Degraded And Humiliated At High Schools Tyler Hilliard , 20, who would have become a junior with an engineering major at the University of California Riverside, lost his life after pledging Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the young man’s family said. The African-American fraternity has a firm anti-hazing policy, defining hazing as “illegal and a crime in most jurisdictions,” according to its website . “Pledging has been officially abolished as a means of obtaining membership in Alpha Phi Alpha, and pledge ‘lines’ have been officially abolished by the fraternity,” the APA statement also said. Hilliard began pledging the fraternity and participating in activities in July, his family said. The young man was allegedly pushed into eating an entire onion drenched in hot sauce and had to drink a lot of water. He also was allegedly paddled with a cactus, ABC-owned KABC   reported. However, things took a tragic turn when after fraternity pledges took part in a strenuous run on Saturday night that ended with him being rushed to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead. UC Riverside released a statement and its condolences. The school has offered support to the young man’s family and counseling services to the campus community. The university is working with its police department to determine the official cause of Hilliard’s death. Police are waiting on the result of an autopsy, according to KABC. “A mother should never have a bury a child like that. He’s only 20. He hasn’t even begun to live his life. He had a bright future ahead of him,” said Hilliard’s mother, Myeasha Kimble,  according to CBS Los Angeles . SEE ALSO: Where Is Amber Guyger? Barry’s Back: Barack Obama Slams President Trump, GOP In Epic Speech

Source: Scott Olson / Getty Barack Obama can no longer hold the highest office in the land, but he still has the ability to inspire the nation as evidenced by a rousing speech he gave earlier Friday. While at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, the former commander-in-chief slammed President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the most eloquent way possible. Politico reports : Laying out a brief history of America — starting with George Washington’s decision to step out of public life after leaving the presidency — Obama framed the 2018 elections as more significant than ever before. And for the first time since leaving office, he said Trump’s name. Obama unfurled a paragraph-by-paragraph condemnation of Trump, his presidency and what he has uncorked in American politics. “It did not start with Donald Trump. He is a symptom, not the cause,” Obama said to applause. “He’s just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.” It’s not just about Trump, Obama said. It’s about Republicans “who know better in Congress … bending over backwards to shield” Trump. They’re hypocrites, he said, and they’re just as dangerous to America. At times mocking them and at times laying into them, Obama said they’ve abandoned all that they’re supposed to stand for as Republicans, and as citizens of this country. Kailyn Lowry: I Want to Move Away from ALL My Baby Daddies!

Sometimes life doesn’t work out quite like you’d always imagined. Plans change, things happen, and suddenly you’re in a difficult situation you’d never prepared for. Like, OK, say you’re a teenage girl, right? You have a very difficult home life but a pretty cool boyfriend, and you wind up pregnant. You have the baby, break up with the boyfriend, and spend the next few years getting settled into being an adult and raising your kid. But then you meet another guy, and you marry him, then you have a child together. Sounds pretty cool so far, but after some years go by, the marriage ends up falling apart , and you get a divorce. After that, you start hooking up with an old friend, but guess what — you’re pretty fertile, it seems, and so you get pregnant again. And just like that, you have three kids with three different men, and luckily they all want to be involved in their children’s lives, but that does make things pretty darn complicated . Surprise, you’re Kailyn Lowry! Kailyn is originally from Pennsylvania, and that’s where she met Jo Rivera, the father of her first child, Isaac. They broke up and eventually she met Javi Marroquin — they moved to Delaware when the Air Force stationed him in Dover, then got married and had little Lincoln. Jo and his girlfriend, Vee, moved to Dover as well so they could be closer to Isaac. After Kailyn and Javi split, she started hooking up with Chris Lopez, a friend of hers from college — they both attended Delaware State University, which is located in Dover. She got pregnant, and she claims the pregnancy was planned , and that’s when baby Lux came into the picture. So after a series of choices made over several years, she has found herself with three children who have three different fathers, and every single person involved lives in Dover. And she’s just not down with that. “I wanna move outta Dover,” she complained on Twitter over the weekend. “Middletown or Newark. There’s nothingggggg in Dover for me.” She added three crying emojis, so you know she’s really distressed about the situation. On one hand, it’s not like she’s talking about moving across the country or anything. Middletown and Newark are both in Delaware, and neither is more than an hour away from where she lives now. But on the other hand, saying there’s nothing in Dover for her is really not the truth. Don’t worry though, Twitter was very quick to call her out on everything. “Your location is not about you at this stage,” one person told her. “Thought you were more grown than this and would’ve known that.” “Wait until your kids are older,” another advised. “It’s not just about you.” One of her followers said “Your kids have their dads in Dover and they are what matters,” and someone else told her not to be “selfish.” Other people left comments like “Cuz you’ve literally ‘done’ everything and everyone.” “What’s wrong?” another super classy reply read. “No men left in Dover you haven’t screwed?” Look, there are tons of reasons why Kailyn might want to leave the city she’s currently in, and if she’s just thinking about moving to another city in that tiny, tiny little state, then it’s really not a huge deal. Could she have worded her tweet a little differently? View Slideshow: Kailyn Lowry: Does She Have the Best Sex Life of All the Teen Moms? Yeah, sure. But again, it’s sincerely not a big deal.

This Alabama County Has Never Had An Integrated School Until Now

View original post here:

O ne county in Alabama was finally moving forward with stopping segregation in its schools. The first integrated school in Sumter County finally made its debut on Monday, ushering in a new era after a painful past. The University Charter School (UCS) opened its doors to serve students from kindergarten to eighth grade in the city of Livingston, AL.com reported. Both white and Black students — more than half of the 300-plus students were Black while a little less than a half were white — sat and learned in classrooms. UCS made history with having a better balance of a diverse student body. No other school in the county has even come close to UCS’ more equitable ratio of white and Black students, according to historical enrollment documents. The UCS ratio shed light on the county’s demographics, which is 76 percent Black and 24 percent white, according to the latest U.S. Census  data. The county was also the poorest one in the state. The *first* integrated school in Sumter County, Alabama opened its doors yesterday. (via @Trish_Crain ) https://t.co/7vNVB0CZ93 — adam harris (@AdamHSays) August 14, 2018 The process of integration in Sumter, like that of Alabama, has been slow despite the large population of African-Americans in the county. The 1969 federal court decision that ordered integration to come to Sumter — 15 years after the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education decision — spurred white students to create their own private schools called “segregation academies.” As those private “academies” spread, Sumter’s public school district became predominantly Black. Parents were stuck with a choice of sending their kids to an all-white private institution or a largely Black public school. However, that hasn’t stopped strong integration pushes, which have led to the creation of UCS. A circuit county judge gave the green light for the school’s opening last month, beginning to clear the way for the painful segregation struggle to end and a more intertwined community to emerge. With the school’s debut, parents, teachers and students alike were thrilled and recognized the significance of the event. “The school will work wonders for the community,” Markeitha Tolliver , parent of fourth-grader Marquez Tolliver , said. “I’m praying they keep it for a very long time.” SEE ALSO: Soul Music Legend Aretha Franklin Is Reportedly Near Death Florida Denny’s Turns Away Black Churchgoers And Forced To Apologize [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3821729″ overlay=”true”]
