Atonement: Georgetown University Will Offer Preferred Admissions Status To Descendants Of Slaves

Georgetown University To Offer Preferred Admissions Status To Descendants Of Slaves Georgetown University is attempting to reconcile their horrific past of slavery by offering apologies, memorials and even preferred admissions status to descendants of slaves according to NY Times: Georgetown’s president, John J. DeGioia, who announced the measures in a speech on Thursday afternoon, said he would offer a formal apology, create an institute for the study of slavery and erect a public memorial to the slaves whose labor benefited the institution, including those who were sold in 1838 to help keep the university afloat. In addition, two campus buildings will be renamed — one for an enslaved African-American man and the other for an African-American educator who belonged to a Catholic religious order. Dr. DeGioia’s decision to offer an advantage in admissions to descendants, similar to that offered to the children and grandchildren of alumni, is unprecedented, historians say. The preference will be offered to the descendants of all the slaves whose labor benefited Georgetown, not just the men, women and children sold in 1838. The 1838 sale, worth about $3.3 million in today’s dollars, was organized by two of Georgetown’s early presidents, both Jesuits. A portion of the profit, about $500,000, was used to help pay off Georgetown’s debts at a time when the college was struggling financially. The slaves were uprooted from the Maryland plantations and shipped to estates in Louisiana. Dr. DeGioia said he planned to apologize for the wrongs of the past “within the framework of the Catholic tradition,” by offering what he described as a Mass of reconciliation in partnership with the Jesuit leadership in the United States and the Archdiocese of Washington.

A Lil Positivity: Detroit Shooting Victim Becomes A Doctor At The Same Hospital That Saved His Life

Shooting Victim Becomes A Doctor At The Same Hospital That Saved His Life A Detroit man by the name of Kevin Morton Jr. has decided to become a doctor at the same hospital that helped save his life according to Bradenton reports: It was nearly a decade since he was shot in an Arby’s parking lot, sustaining injuries so severe that the early prognosis gave him only a 10 percent chance of survival. But Dr. Dharti Sheth-Zelmanski, the surgeon on call in the trauma unit that night, didn’t let that happen. The care he received over many surgeries and his long recovery inspired Morton to evaluate what he would do with his second chance. The answer came naturally: He’d pay it forward by becoming a doctor himself. In 2007, the year he was nearly killed, Morton was in his fourth year of college, but only had enough credits to be considered a junior. He had fallen behind in school, working 40-, sometimes 50-hour, weeks at an Arby’s to pay his bills. The restaurant was on Detroit’s infamous 8-Mile. When Morton, then 22, was the last to leave late at night, he’d start his car remotely while still safely inside. He’d quickly lock up and hurry to his car to drive away as fast as he could. Kevin decided to go back to school and even started his rotations at the same Detroit hospital that saved his life: He went back to college at Oakland University in 2009, but this time declared his major as pre-med. He took extra biochemistry and microbiology classes to catch up, and even went back to work at Arby’s, albeit in a different neighborhood. That same year, he married his high school sweetheart, Sherry. Sheth-Zelmanski and her husband attended the wedding. When they walked in during the reception, Morton stopped the party and gave her a hero’s welcome, introducing her to his guests as the woman who saved his life. So in 2012, he took the MCAT and was accepted to Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He chose to specialize in general surgery, the same as Sheth-Zelmanski. He did his student rotations at St. John’s Hospital in Detroit, walking the same halls where he was once a patient. He’ll start his residency there in July – almost nine years to the day he was brought there as a shooting victim. What a beautiful and inspirational story!!!

Contraception Control: UGA Athletic Director Apologizes To Ludacris For Buying Him Condoms Before Concert

UGA Athletic Director Apologizes To Ludacris For Condoms Debacle UGA athletic director Greg McGarity has apologized to rapper Ludacris for supplying him with a box of condoms before a concert at the university. According to Online Athens , the AD wanted to ensure Luda had all the things listed on his tour rider but the contraception was uncalled for… “I do want to take this opportunity to apologize to our board for mistakes we made with certain aspects of the details of an entertainment agreement,” McGarity said. “Few things in my professional life have bothered me more than this situation. There are no reruns in life so we need to turn the page, learn from our mistakes and do everything we can to make sure errors of this nature do not reoccur.” Georgia paid Ludacris $65,000 for a 13-minute performance on April 16, but the three-time Grammy winner’s lengthy hospitality rider included condoms and liquor. Georgia landed the rapper to play on G-Day days after announcing it had not secured an act. After the quarterly meeting, UGA president Jere Morehead said he “certainly appreciated that the athletic department took responsibility for some of the terms in that contract. Obviously in retrospect they should have done a more thorough job of reviewing all of the riders and removing those that were objectionable. I appreciate that he’s accepted that that’s what athletics should have done and what it will do moving forward.” We hope Ludacris and his beautiful wife Eudoxie accept the apology…. Welcome To Florida: Man-Eating African Nile Crocodiles Have Been Found In The Sunshine State

Man-Eating African Nile Crocodiles Have Been Found In Florida Florida really is the weirdest stat e in America according to CNN News : A team of scientists has identified three reptiles captured near Miami as Nile crocodiles, a species native to Africa. Through DNA testing, scientists from the University of Florida were able to confirm that the reptiles captured in the wild from 2009, 2011 and 2014 were Nile crocodiles, the second-largest extant reptile species in the world. The findings were published in the journal of Herpetological Conservation and Biology in April. The study could mean that more of these man-eating creatures are lingering in the Sunshine State. “The odds that the few of us who study Florida reptiles have found all of the Nile crocs out there is probably unlikely,” Kenneth Krysko, herpetology collections manager at the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida, said in a statement. “We know that they can survive in the Florida wilderness for numerous years, we know that they grow quickly here and we know their behavior in their native range, and there is no reason to suggest that would change here in Florida.” Welcome to Florida, folks!!!

Race Matters: Study Shows Young Black Americans Are LEAST Likely To Vote In Elections

Young Black Americans Are LEAST Likely To Vote A new study shows that young African Americans are not finding their way to the ballot box according to Washington Post : African Americans account for a larger share of Democratic primary voters this year than they did in 2008, but that is because of older black voters, not higher participation by younger black people. Across two dozen states where exit polls were conducted in 2008 and this year, black voters older than 45 grew from 12 percent of the electorate on average in 2008 to 16 percent this year. In those same states, black voters younger than 45 made up 11 percent of voters in 2008 vs. 10 percent this year. Democratic candidates and strategists have stressed the importance this year of all young voters, who heavily favored Obama in both of his election contests — and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in this year’s Democratic primaries. But younger Americans are the least likely to turn out in elections: The share of eligible voters ages 18 to 29 who cast ballots fell from a record high of 48 percent in 2008 to 41 percent in the 2012 presidential election, according to the U.S. Elections Project. Fredrick Harris, a political science professor and director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University, said the success of the Black Lives Matter movement should not be measured only by voter turnout or candidate preference. It has succeeded at doing what no other black leaders have done, especially those who have lined up to endorse either Sanders or Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. “Voting is definitely one way, and I wouldn’t insult my ancestors by telling people they shouldn’t vote, but there are other ways of reimagining and restructuring the world, and that lies in organizing our communities,” said Ashley Williams, a 23-year-old activist who attends the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Discuss.

Race Matters: Samford University Sorority Prints Up Inflammatory T-Shirts Depicting Blacks Picking Cotton And Chowing On Watermelon

Samford University Sorority Hands Outs T-Shirts Depicting Slaves Picking Cotton What makes these white frats and sororities think that they can get away with the blatantly racist things they try to pull off on these campuses? WIAT reports that the administration at Samford University in Alabama is offering apologies for some offensive t-shirts that were created by Alpha Delta Pi sorority that CLEARLY show a slaves picking cotton and happily chowing down on a slice of watermelon. A statement from Samford’s Executive Director of Communications, Philip Poole, says that the university apologizes for the offensive image that appeared on the shirts, calling it completely inconsistent with the university’s mission and values. The release also states that the school denied the shirt design after a review process but the shirts were created anyway. University President Andy Westmoreland said in an email to students and employees: “I was repulsed by the image.” Alpha Delta Pi’s national headquarters in Atlanta said in a statement: “The shirt design absolutely contradicts the values of respect and dignity that our organization prides itself on.” Here’s what the University had to say: Samford University apologizes for the offensive image that appeared on T-shirts produced by the Kappa chapter of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. This is completely inconsistent with the university’s mission and values. We are addressing the issue with our Alpha Delta Pi chapter and the international organization and with the vendor who produced the shirt. Despite the university’s denial of the project through our normal review and approval process, the shirts were produced anyway. We are following our procedures as quickly as possible to address this violation of Samford’s values community. There’s never a good time to be a racist, but ESPECIALLY nowadays as we watch police gun down black folks for no damn reason and a guy like Donald Trump rise to power. Tension is high and these folks are playing with fire. Not a good combo. Image via Facebook
