Get Out Of Jail Fat Free: Prison Inmate Earns Early Release By Dropping 25 Pounds

If George McCovery keeps up the hard work, there’ll be no more “overweight thuggin” for him. Mccovery lost 25 pounds in just 20 days while locked up in Lake County, Florida. A 345-pound man jailed for driving with a suspended license was freed nine days early thanks to a Lake County, Fla., judge’s “lose-a-pound, gain-a-day” deal. George McCovery, 37, dropped 25 pounds in 20 days — a feat he credited to bland prison food and the judge’s weight-loss challenge. “She gave me a chance to prove myself, and I didn’t want to let her down,” he told the Orlando Sentinel. Judge Donna Miller, whose courtroom proceedings are replayed in the TV show “Lake Courts,” is famous for her unusual sentence deals. In her 17 years as a judge, Miller has ordered defendants to start jogging, take a dance class, tutor math and write Christmas cards, according to the Sentinel. “I do what I do to try to change the person in front of me,” she said, acknowledging that her self-improvement sentences won’t be doled out to everyone. “If the person needs jail, they get jail.” Miller said she would check McCovery’s weight after 20 days. And to her surprise, he had already shed 25 pounds. “It’s not easy to lose weight,” Miller told the Sentinel. “I thought he’d lose 5, maybe, 6 pounds — not 25.” McCovery, who takes medication for high blood pressure, said he wanted to lose weight during the trial. But it isn’t easy. Obesity treatments, such as bariatric surgery, are effective, but many people are reluctant to undergo such an invasive procedure. And a dearth of drugs approved to treat obesity leaves few options for extreme weight loss short of strict diets and intense exercise programs. But the benefits of weight loss are well worth the effort. According to an August 2011 report, if every obese person decreased his or her body mass index by just 1 percent (a loss of 2 pounds for a 200-pound adult), as many as 2.4 million diabetes cases, 1.7 million cases of heart disease and stroke and 127,000 cancer cases could be prevented. Although McCovery lost more than a pound a day, experts say slow and steady weight loss is the best way to shed the pounds for good. “There’s a lot that goes on between losing that first pound and losing that 100, 50 or even 20 pounds,” Lisa Cimperman, a registered dietitian at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, told ABC News. Aiming to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week can help you stay on track and power through the inevitable weight loss lulls. Along the way, McCovery was encouraged by his detention deputies, the Sentinel reported. “Studies have shown that support groups or just having someone else encouraging you will help make you successful,” said Lisa Cimperman. That encouragement and the promise of making it home in time for Thanksgiving was enough for McCovery, who earned a note of praise from Judger Miller on his release order that read, “Good job, Mr. McCovery!” This is a great story. We hope George continues to work at his weight loss now that he’s a free man cuz 345 lbs is no way to live! Source More On Bossip! Southwest DeKalb High School graduate Robert Champion, 26, was found unresponsive in a parked bus in front of a hotel in Orlando, Florida. The tragedy occurred after FAMU’s (Florida A&M) football team lost to Bethune-Cookman (November 19), investigators suspect it is a result of hazing. In Florida, if any deaths are the result of hazing it is considered to be a third-degree felony. The investigation will continue and will not be able to confirm if hazing was the result for another 10-12 weeks explained by Sheri Blanton, a forensic coordinator for the medical examiner. In response the president of the University, James Ammons, suspended the marching band, Marching 100, from practice and performances until the cause of death is revealed. Megyn Kelly on UC Davis Pepper Spray Scandal: No Big Deal!

Earlier this week, police on the campus of the University of California-Davis used pepper spray to subdue protesting students. The maneuver – which you can watch on tape HERE – caused outrage across the Internet. But Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly has no idea why. “It’s like a derivative of actual pepper,” she actually said on air yesterday. “It’s a food product, essentially.” Megyn Kelly Speaks on Pepper Spray Kelly acknowledged the video “looks bad,” as officers in riot gear unleashed the substance on a group of relatively calm individuals. But they didn’t really react, so might the cops have used a “diluted” version of the product, she wonders? Watch the clip above and react: Kelly is…

UC Davis Cops Pepper Spraying Peaceful Protesters Placed On Leave! [Video]

These cops got crazy for no reason!: Two University of California, Davis police officers involved in the pepper spraying of seated protesters were placed on administrative leave Sunday, as the school’s chancellor accelerated an investigation of the incident and made plans to meet with protesters amid calls for her resignation. UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said she has been inundated with reaction from alumni, staff, students and faculty over the incident Friday in which a riot gear-clad officer fires pepper spray on a line of sitting demonstrators. The protesters flinch and cover their faces but remain passive with their arms interlocked as onlookers shriek and scream out for the officer to stop. The officers placed on leave have not been identified. In a news release, the university said, “Videos taken during Friday’s arrests showed that the two officers used pepper spray on peacefully seated students.” The faculty association on Saturday called for Katehi’s resignation after video of the incident was circulated widely on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter on Saturday, saying in a letter there had been a “gross failure of leadership.” Katehi has resisted calls for her to quit, vowing instead to rigorously investigate the incident during which 10 protesters were arrested. “I am deeply saddened that this happened on our campus, and as chancellor, I take full responsibility for the incident,” Katehi said in a statement Sunday. “However, I pledge to take the actions needed to ensure that this does not happen again. I feel very sorry for the harm our students were subjected to and I vow to work tirelessly to make the campus a more welcoming and safe place.” Katehi also set a 30-day deadline for a task force investigating the incident to issue its report. The task force will be comprised of students, staff and faculty, Katehi said, and will be chosen this week. She plans to meet with demonstrators Monday at their general assembly, said her spokeswoman, Claudia Morain. The protest was held in support of the overall Occupy Wall Street movement and in solidarity with protesters at the University of California, Berkeley who were jabbed by police with batons on Nov. 9. As the video spread online and on television of an officer blasting pepper spray into the faces of seated protesters, outrage came quickly — followed almost as quickly by defense from police. However, a law enforcement official who watched the clip called the use of force “fairly standard police procedure.” Charles J. Kelly, a former Baltimore Police Department lieutenant who wrote the department’s use of force guidelines, said pepper spray is a “compliance tool” that can be used on subjects who do not resist, and is preferable to simply lifting protesters. “When you start picking up human bodies, you risk hurting them,” Kelly said. “Bodies don’t have handles on them.” After reviewing the video, Kelly said he observed at least two cases of “active resistance” from protesters. In one instance, a woman pulls her arm back from an officer. In the second instance, a protester curls into a ball. Each of those actions could have warranted more force, including baton strikes and pressure-point techniques. “What I’m looking at is fairly standard police procedure,” Kelly said. Images of police actions have served to galvanize support during the Occupy Wall Street movement, from the clash between protesters and police in Oakland last month that left an Iraq War veteran with serious injuries to more recent skirmishes in New York City, San Diego, Denver and Portland, Ore. Some of the most notorious instances went viral online, including the use of pepper spray on an 84-year-old activist in Seattle and a group of women in New York. Seattle’s mayor apologized to the activist, and the New York Police Department official shown using pepper spray on the group of women lost 10 vacation days after an internal review. In the video of the UC Davis protest, the officer, a member of the university police force, displays a bottle before spraying its contents in a sweeping motion while walking back and forth in front of the demonstrators. Most of the protesters have their heads down, but several were hit directly in the face. Some members of a crowd gathered at the scene scream and cry out. The crowd then chants, “Shame on You,” as the protesters on the ground are led away. The officers retreat minutes later with helmets on and batons drawn. Nine students hit by pepper spray were treated at the scene, two were taken to hospitals and later released, university officials said. UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza has said the decision to use pepper spray was made at the scene. “The students had encircled the officers,” she said Saturday. “They needed to exit. They were looking to leave but were unable to get out.” Katehi said the university is challenged by its capacity to balance freedom of expression with the need to feel safe. “These past few days our campus has been confronted with serious questions which will challenge us for many months and years to come,” Katehi said. Turn the page for the actual footage of the incident.

Urban Meyer To Coach Ohio State Football Team?

Read more:

Ohio State University may have a new head coach of the football team, now that Ohio native Urban Meyer has been contacted about the job. Current head coach Luke Fickell was named interim head coach earlier this year, after Jim Tressel’s abrupt resignation. But Fickell has had a challenging season. The Buckeyes are usually at the top of the Big 10 conference and national championship contenders. This season, they’re not even ranked. The news about Meyer comes after the Buckeyes’ loss to Penn State University. According to ESPN , Meyer has denied that he’s going to Ohio State and said, “I’ve not been offered any job, and I’ve certainly not accepted any job.” Notice how he didn’t deny having talks with the school? Meyer currently works as a broadcaster for ESPN, but is best known for his success as the head coach at the University of Florida. The Gators won ove 100 games and two national championships under Meyer’s decade of leadership. He resigned in 2010 to spend more time with his family. Lisa Ling On Black Male Prison Crisis “Our America: Generation Incarceration” [Video]

Finally Oprah is stepping her game up and showing some stuff black people actually want to see on the OWN network. Lisa Ling is taking on the prison industrial complex with her latest episode of “Our America” : Lisa Ling has covered a range of topics on her documentary series “Our America,” from underage sex trafficking to the difficulties of being gay and Christian. Now, the 38-year-old journalist is taking on the issue of black male incarceration. In an episode titled “Incarceration Generation,” Ling will explore the disproportionate number of black men behind bars and the challenges they face after being released. The show will also discuss the effect imprisonment has had on multiple generations, creating a cycle of poverty in the African American community. Ling spoke about her work with the OWN network series that is now in its second season, a venture she took on after doing investigative work for the National Geographic Channel and a three year stint on ABC’s “The View.” “It has certainly been the most gratifying work experience I’ve ever had,”she said, according to Eurweb.com. “I can’t tell you how many times throughout the course of shooting this series, that I felt like I was in a foreign place or a distant place. But the reality is that all of these stories, in their greatest complexity, are in our backyards.” Statistics show that an incarcerated man is not foreign within the black community. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, non-Hispanic blacks comprised 39.4 percent of the total prison and jail population in 2009, with an imprisonment rate that was six times higher than white males and almost three times higher than Hispanic males. That number goes beyond prison doors and into homes. A Bureau of Justice Statistics special report found that over 1.7 million children had a parent in prison in 2008, usually a father. Of those fathers, four in 10 in state or federal prisons were black. Studies have found that children of incarcerated parents face unique difficulties including increased chances of homelessness, agressive behavior, failure in school and future imprisonment. In addition, ex-offenders are far less likely to find a job upon their release from prison, crippled not only by their criminal record, but oftentimes, additionally hindered by their lack of experience and education. According to a 2003 report by the New York University Urban Institute Reentry Roundtable, about 70 percent of offenders and ex-offenders are high school dropouts. Ling takes on these issues and more in the episode, which airs Nov. 20 at 10pm ET/PT. This one looks like it might be good. Check out the sneak peek below: More On Bossip! Lady Gaga Shows Off Prized Asset in Diddy Coffee Table Book

Thank you, Diddy. Thank you. The rapper has, for whatever reason (not that he needed one) released a new coffee table book titled Culo, which means buttocks in Italian. You can guess what’s in it. Diddy, record executive Jimmy Iovine and photographer Raphael Mazzucco teamed up to compile an artistic, memorable 248-page pictorial expose on female butts. Chief among them? Lady Gaga. Girl’s got back, who knew! Lady Gaga was born this way, baby. Well, sans tattoo . Yeah. After all her ridiculous fashion over the years, who would have guessed one of the more shocking Lady Gaga photos out there would feature her wearing nothing. “Raphael is a true artist,” says Diddy of Mazzucco, the man behind the image above. “He relies on pure instinct, capturing a raw, natural sense of beauty through his lens that celebrates the female form. His work is passionate and powerful.” That’s a verbose way of spinning a book about asses, but we’ll buy it. Actually, no. Sadly, Pippa Middleton does not appear. Boycott it.

Joe Paterno, Disgraced Penn State Coach, Diagnosed with Lung Cancer

Joe Paterno, the Penn State football coach who was fired last week due to his role in a child molestation cover-up , has been diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer. His son, Scott, said the diagnosis took place last week and released the following statement: “He is currently undergoing treatment and his doctors are optimistic that he will make a full recovery. As everyone can appreciate, this is a deeply personal matter for my parents, and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment.” Penn State remains under intense scrutiny and investigation for the alleged actions of ex-assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who faces 40 counts of sexual abuse charges stemming from his interactions with young boys on and off the university’s campus. He recently admitted to showering with these young teens.
