Kanye West Protege Big Sean To Appear On ‘RapFix Live’

G.O.O.D. Music MC will chat with Sway on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Alvin Blanco Big Sean Photo: Theo Wargo/ WireImage “RapFix Live” is back Thursday at 4 p.m. ET, and our special guest is G.O.O.D. Music/ Def Jam rapper Big Sean. The Detroit MC and 2010 XXL Freshmen 10 alum will be fresh from rocking South by Southwest this past weekend with Jay-Z and his G.O.O.D Music family, including mentor Kanye West. Big Sean first made a name for himself about four years ago when his song “Getcha Some” was a standout on West’s Can’t Tell Me Nothing mixtape. After catching Yeezy at a radio station and impressing him with an impromptu audition, Sean passed on a scholarship to Michigan State University to tour with West and eventually signed with the Chicago rapper’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint in 2007. Since then, Sean has released three volumes of his Finally Famous mixtapes ( The Mixtape, U Know Big Sean and BIG ) to keep his fans satiated, and he was also a regular on West’s G.O.O.D. Friday music leaks. After a few delays, Sean’s long-in-the-making debut album, Finally Famous: The Album, has an official release date of May 3. Right now, Sean can be heard on the album’s No I.D.-produced lead single “My Last,” which features R&B crooner Chris Brown. “I’ve seen and [gone] from doing shows in Detroit and getting booed to people just looking to a couple people knowing the words to doing sold-out shows with thousands and thousands of people just knowing [my songs],” Sean told MTV News from the set of the video for “My Last.” “And it [comes from] years of grinding, man.” Sean performed the song at SXSW and the Detroit spitter also has a verse on West’s soon to be released “All of the Lights” remix with Drake and Lil Wayne . Don’t miss “RapFix Live” with Big Sean on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Related Artists Big Sean Kanye West

Stalley Makes Music For His Ohio Hometown To ‘Ride Out To’

‘This is something I wanted to give back,’ rapper tells Mixtape Daily about Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music). By Jayson Rodriguez Stalley Photo: Jan Ferrer Main Pick Street King : Stalley Holding It Down For : Massillon, OH Mixtape : Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music) Real Spit : Stalley is a hometown hero. He might have moved out of his home state of Ohio, first by taking a scholarship to play hoops at the University of Michigan then later at Long Island University. But his heart never left Massillon, a blue-collar town bred on basketball and football dreams. For his latest project, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music), he recruited a fellow Ohioan, producer Rashad, and the two created the soundtrack to Massillon’s night life. “It’s paying homage to my hometown, and in my hometown there’s a street called Lincoln Way that everyone cruises on Friday and Saturday nights, showing off the cars, whether it’s an old muscle car or a new-school paint-up car with a loud system. This is something I wanted to give back, as far as a music project, for that strip. Something that people can actually ride out to or be that soundtrack to that journey.” Start it up. Jesus Take The Wheel: BYU Boots Center Brandon Davies For Chopping Down Some Mormon Backs!!

This has gotta be tough on the kid. It isn’t like he sexually assualted someone or committed a crime, just a lil hanky-panky with his girlfriend. Sticking to principles appears to carry a steep cost for the nation’s third-ranked college basketball team. A day after Brigham Young University dismissed center Brandon Davies from the team for violating the school’s strict honor code, the No. 3-ranked Cougars were throttled Wednesday by unranked New Mexico. “The honor code really reflects who we are as a university. It defines us and it does make us different,” BYU spokeswoman Carrie Jenkins told CNN affiliate KSTU-TV. Davies, a 6-9 sophomore from Provo, was the team’s top rebounder and third-leading scorer. He received the Cougars’ Academic Excellence award last season, according to an online profile. BYU had been gunning for a high seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, but the team’s fortunes took a tumble with Wednesday night’s 82-64 loss to New Mexico. University officials said Davies admitted violating the honor code at BYU, which is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church. The honor code requires all faculty, staff and students to: Be honest; Live a chaste and virtuous life; Obey the law and all campus policies; Use clean language; Respect others; Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse; Participate regularly in church services; Observe dress and grooming standards; Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the honor code. The code forbids homosexual behavior and bars members of the opposite sex from going beyond the lobby of the school’s single-sex dormitories. The dress and grooming standards forbid beards, tattoos and piercings for men and short or form-fitting clothes or bare feet in public for women. The university did not say which part of the code Davies violated, but it did say he had not committed a crime. Davies’ future as a student at BYU and his status for next season have yet to be determined. Ah c’mon give the kid a break! A lil poon-tang ain’t never hurt nobody (long as he wore a Jimmy!) Do you feel that BYU has a right to ask players not to have sex as a condition of playing for the team or going to the school??? Source

Some Sunday Controversy: David Aldridge Labels NBA All-Star Weekend As The “Black Thanksgiving”

Here’s what CNN writer David Aldridge feels about NBA All-Star Weekend (which caused quite the stir in the sports world) …Via CNN : So, you want to know about Black Thanksgiving? That’s what sports writer Mike Wilbon calls NBA All-Star Weekend. First of all, what you need to know about Wilbon, whom I love, is that he has been known to exaggerate just a touch on occasion. But on this one, he’s on point. For those of us who cover the NBA for a living, like me and Wilbon — now an ESPN yakker and writer, formerly a Washington Post yakker and writer, and my friend –All-Star Weekend is a long four days of work. But for most of the people who descend into town — this year it’s Los Angeles, with its still sparkling Staples Center and the surrounding “L.A. Live” area — it’s an opportunity to go wild (sometimes a little too wild, as happened in Las Vegas a few years ago) and get together. Other folks have Tweetups. Black people have All-Star Weekend, or ASW. It’s a national holiday, sort of. ASW is the only time of the year that people call me. I don’t say that to be maudlin, ’cause most of the time, I don’t want people to call me. (Dirty little secret: I don’t really like talking on the phone.) But they come out of the woodwork this time of year, because NBA players are royalty in Black America, and everyone wants to be near them. The old saying is that ballers want to be rappers, and rappers want to be ballers. That’s really, really true. Basketball is a culture. It isn’t for everyone, though the game is loved by people of all colors. There is a rhythm to it, just as if McCoy Tyner was dribbling a ball instead of playing piano. “Considering that the culture of basketball in a predominantly black league like the NBA is so strongly connected to African American culture, the NBA All-Star weekend has turned into a celebration of African American culture by extension,” says Todd Boyd, professor of critical studies at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. The season begins just as baseball’s ends, when the days grow short and the weather turns windy and cold. The tempo is slow at first, like the beginning strains of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme,” but then, just as with Coltrane, it picks up steam. Rookies like the Clippers’ Blake Griffin find their voice, and their game blossoms, as the calendar turns to a new year. While older, wiser veteran players and teams tinker here and there, not much interested in the daily standings, knowing that the important games come in the spring. They can wait. Does this offend you???
