SMH: A Staten Island woman died a day after her husband beat her for not paying for cable TV while he was hospitalized over Thanksgiving , law enforcement sources said. Blanche Scala, 59, died on Nov. 27 after her husband, Thomas Scala, 57, attacked her inside their New Dorp Beach home when he came home from the hospital, the sources said. The husband, who was just released from another 3-month hospital stay on Thursday, was charged with assault and criminal mischief for the alleged attack – but could face a murder rap once the case goes before a grand jury, sources said. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide due to blunt impact trauma to the head. Scala, who has a long history of health issues, was angry at his wife for not visiting him at the hospital and because she refused to pay for premium cable channels during his stay, sources said. “Things escalate,” a source said. “Things get thrown.” Investigators believe one of the objects was an ashtray that caught his wife in the head. The woman hurriedly packed her clothes into a cart and tried to escape the Finley Ave. home, but the enraged husband doused them with rubbing alcohol and used hairspray to set them ablaze, sources said. She burned her hands putting out the flames. The wife was treated for the injuries at Staten Island University Hospital and took shelter at a friend’s house. Her husband found her at the home and began harassing the woman before cops were called and he left, sources said. As the shaken wife tried to go to sleep that night, she complained to her friend of nausea and headaches, sources said. The friend found her on a couch the next morning not breathing. She was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, but couldn’t be saved. Autopsy results showed she died as the result of the bleeding of an existing subdural hematoma, a collection of blood on the surface of the brain. Investigators learned that Scala hit the woman just a week before on Nov. 19, sources said. Detectives believe the ashtray she was hit with just before she died struck the same injury and caused her death. Scala has admitted to family members that he had hit his wife, sources said. He was released on his own recognizance after his arraignment on Friday. Wow, this story is crraaazzzyy. R.I.P. Source

Drummer tells MTV News that five songs are completed for long-in-the-works project. By James Montgomery Travis Barker Photo: MTV News NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — At this point, you’ve probably heard everything the members of Blink-182 have had to say about their loooong -in-the-works new album, from their initial announcement that they were “in the studio writing and recording” in February 2009 and the first mentions of “Up All Night,” the new song they never ended up playing on their reunion tour , to Mark Hoppus’ promise to do “all I can to have a new Blink-182 album in 2010” and, finally, Travis Barker’s admission that the album wouldn’t hit stores until 2011. So you probably took it with a grain of salt when, earlier this week, Barker tweeted that the new Blink record would be out “this summer.” And we did too. So when we visited Barker in his NoHo studio — where he played us a handful of tracks from his upcoming solo album, Give the Drummer Some — we had to ask about the status of the Blink album. From the sound of things, well, summer is definitely in the cards. “I think we’ll turn in our album in June or July, honestly, and, I mean, the stuff’s awesome, ” Barker said. “It’s coming close, to the point where these are completed songs and they’re not going to change. These are album versions.” Barker said Blink have “five, pretty much, songs” finished for the album and added that its delay has had as much to do with his and his bandmates’ hectic schedules as it does with the way they’ve chosen to work this time around. “You know, it’s hard, because we would get home from a tour, and then Tom [DeLonge]’s side project would go out, his side project comes back, he’s back now, he’s ready to get in the lab, [and] I’m about to say, ‘Peace out, I’m about to do my thing.’ So it’s like, when we’re in a room together for more than a month or two, it’s gonna really happen,” he said. “I mean, up until the last album, every album was written in a week. All of us had ideas, we would come, we would get into a room, [and] we’d go, ‘OK, you want to write the album?’ And we’d write those songs, and then we’d record them the next week. Now … we all have studios, we all have the luxury of staying home and doing it, and we don’t have to get into a room to get an idea out or pay for a studio. So a lot of it’s going down. Like, we’re working in separate studios, just really kind of working on music.” For the record, yes, he realizes Blink fans have been waiting a very long time, but he promises that the wait will most definitely be worth it. “I wish I could play everyone the songs now,” he smiled. “Like I said, they sound awesome.” What are you expecting from the new Blink album? Chandler Wiz Khalifa Photo: Al Pereira/ WireImage After spending a few months away from the road as he prepares to release his major-label debut, Rolling Papers, Steelers superfan Wiz Khalifa is set to embark on a 17-city college tour aptly named “The Green Carpet Tour.” The “Black and Yellow” MC’s latest tour is a joint effort in conjunction with non-profit Reverb and Pretty Polly Productions as part of its Campus Consciousness Tour series. Wiz will be joined by fellow Pittsburgh artist Mac Miller on the college trek starting April Fool’s Day in Raleigh, North Carolina, before ending the tour in his home state of Pennsylvania on April 26. Wiz’s reputation for loving all things “green” precedes him, but this tour serves an even greater green purpose: It aims to promote environmental awareness by using clean burning biodiesel fuel to power his tour bus and only bio-degradable and recyclable products backstage. Wiz’s successful Waken Baken tour of last year was just the start of a series of notable wins for the charismatic rapper. The 23-year old sensation is a nominee for the 2011 mtvU Woodie of the Year award , and Rolling Papers is set for a March 29 release. ‘I really didn’t think it was going to be me,’ jazz singer/bassist tells MTV News of topping Justin Bieber and Drake for coveted award. By Kara Warner with reporting by Sway Calloway Esperanza Spalding wins Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammys Photo: Getty Images Who would’ve thought that a young jazz bassist would come in and steal the Best New Artist Grammy out from under the likes of Justin Bieber, Florence and the Machine and Drake? Not too many people, that’s for sure. In fact, gambling mavens Ladbrokes and Bodog placed the odds of Esperanza Spalding winning the award at an unlikely 20-to-1 . But she did it, and she is the first jazz artist ever to do so. “I really didn’t think it was going to be me,” a delighted Spalding told MTV News after her win. “I was one of those [surprised] people. … It was so unexpected, that’s the truth. I’m grateful to all my people in my big musical family that have given me so much support and help over the years,” Spalding gushed. “I don’t really think this is for me; it’s for all of us. And I wish they could all be here to put one finger on this with me.” Since we’re still reeling over the fact that Spalding overcame the tsunami of popularity currently surrounding her fellow nominees, it’s time to take a closer look at this mega underdog-turned-big winner. The 26-year-old Portland, Oregon, native discovered music at an early age, teaching herself to play the violin at age 5 and playing with the Chamber Music Society of Oregon. She dabbled in the guitar, the oboe and cello before settling on the bass in high school. After putting in time in at both Portland State University and the prestigious Berklee College of Music on scholarships, she broke onto the jazz scene in a big way with her album Chamber Music Society. Though Spalding was primarily known in jazz circles, her Best New Artist Grammy will surely put her on the proverbial music map for a new group of fans. “I am a bassist, composer and singer,” Spalding explained to MTV News. “I guess that’s the easiest way to describe the music I do. You really just have to hear it. It’s rooted in jazz, but there’s a lot of stuff up in there. You just have to have a taste.” Not only that, but Spalding joined music legend Prince on his Welcome 2 America Tour . These scientists nowadays will try to convince you that everything you eat, smell, and drink is going to do something crazy to you. Many studies have linked marijuana use with early onset of psychosis. The question is, does smoking marijuana cause earlier psychosis? A new review of 83 studies involving more than 22,000 participants seeks an answer. The meta-analysis found that people who smoked marijuana developed psychotic disorders an average 2.7 years earlier than people who did not use cannabis. But the review also found that people who used any illegal drug suffered psychosis two years earlier than non-users, not a large difference. While alcohol use was not associated with early onset, the studies reviewed could not rule out the influence of cigarette smoking, which is a common habit of people with psychotic disorders and those who smoke marijuana. In many of the countries from which the data was gathered, in fact, cannabis is typically smoked mixed with tobacco. The researchers argue that cigarette smoking—unlike marijuana— does not worsen hallucinations or paranoia in patients with schizophrenia, so they believe that tobacco does not account for earlier onset. Led by Mathew Large of the University of New South Wales in Australia, the authors of the new research review also focused on other factors that may have contributed to the association between pot smoking and early psychosis in previous studies. For instance, it’s known that men are both more likely to take drugs and to develop psychosis at an earlier age than women, and the preponderance of men in past studies might have contributed to the connections found. It’s also known that young people, including those who have schizophrenia, are more likely to smoke pot than older folks, so previous studies that put upper age limits on their participants could have overstated the marijuana-psychosis link. But based on the meta-analysis, researchers found that the link persisted independently of these factors. In the paper, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, they conclude that their results “provide evidence for a relationship between cannabis use and earlier onset of psychotic illness and they support the hypothesis that cannabis use plays a causal role in the development of psychosis in some patients.” We’re not sure that the kush makes you crazy, but we definitely know some folks that are crazy for the kush ! Just like a basketball player, life twists and turns. Melvin Jones is not only a basketball star, but also a top student at Portland State University — and all because his high school coach, Kasey Poirrier, thinks of him as a little brother. Kasey’s mom, Jennifer Annable, was five months pregnant when she moved to Seattle with 50 bucks in her pocket. She worked long hours, struggling to become a teacher. Eventually she became director of a school for children with special needs, but her marriage ended in divorce before she could give Kasey that little brother. One night Kasey asked his mom: “How would you feel about Melvin coming to stay with us?” Melvin Jones had just been shoved out of two other high schools and had entered Kasey’s with zero credits. At age 16, he was drifting on the streets of Seattle. “Every time I took him home, I was taking him somewhere else,” Kasey recalled. “We drove around to four or five different places and there were no adults.” Melvin’s mom was dying of AIDS. “He was loved, but not parented,” is how Jennifer put it. So she made up a room for him. Why would a single mom take on such a challenge? Jennifer’s father grew up in foster care; her mother in an orphanage. Jennifer had opened her home to kids before: Five, in fact, during Kasey’s childhood. “My dream was always to run an orphanage,” she explained. “When I was a little girl, I had a hundred dolls and I used to line them up on the back porch. Those were my kids.” Her mom was almost adopted three times, but each time, the couple sent her back. “To think that somebody would take in a child, then give them back,” Jennifer said. She simply wanted to help children like her mom. Still, she recalled: “Taking in Melvin was one of the hardest things I ever did in the beginning.” He did not trust her. He stashed the groceries she bought him under his bed, afraid some one would steal them. Melvin resisted Jennifer’s every attempt to become his new mother. “I did not like it at all,” Melvin said. “I fought it.” Jennifer told Melvin: “ ‘I’m not trying to take anyone’s place, but you need a mom!’ ” And she had love enough to help another child. Still, Melvin’s little sister, Marika, was not happy. “Why you wanna go move in with her? She’s not family.” “He was with me,” big sister Lasheka Bousley insisted. “I was trying to figure out why he’d want to go with someone else other than me.” Melvin simply wanted someone to show him how to study. “Jennifer was like a gnat, like you slappin’ at a gnat and it just won’t go away.”
