Bristol Palin Speech Canceled Amid Washington University Student Protests

Bristol Palin’s sex life is a common topic of discussion on celebrity gossip websites. Washington University students don’t want to hear about it, though. At least not in person, for a hefty fee. The Dancing With the Stars finalist was dropped from a planned February speaking engagement at the St. Louis college following student protests. Bristol Palin , who got pregnant at 17, was invited by the Student Health Advisory Committee to talk abstinence during Student Sexual Responsibility Week. But after the student body protested the use of student-generated money to fund her reportedly several thousand dollar fee, her appearance was called off. “People are angry because of the opposition to Palin’s lack of expertise and the high cost she charges,” said student Philip Thomas, who started the protest . Fellow undergrad Ryan McCombe started a Facebook page to protest the speech and gathered several harsh comments about the daughter of Sarah Palin. “Bristol Palin rose to fame on none of her own merits,” wrote one student. “She has absolutely zero credentials in this area, and costs a ton of money.” Added another, “I mean, is Bristol honestly going to get up there and say that she was trying to make a baby and lay back and thought of England?” “Or will she say that she had sex, without understanding the steps to be taken in order not to become pregnant?” said another anti-Bristol student. Student advisory president Scott Elman said that the decision for Palin not to appear was “100 percent mutual” between her and the committee. Hey, at least her new boyfriend will be there to comfort her.

The first black woman on a tenured track at Northwestern University, the first black woman to serve in a cabinet position in New York State, the first black woman to be associate vice provost for academic affairs at the University of Minnesota, the first female president of Chicago State University and – infamously – the first female president of Morris Brown College. Now, after years of silence during the aftermath of her career-ending relationship with the financially forsaken HBCU, Dolores Cross is speaking out again. Continued at The Atlanta Post

Lil Wayne To Launch I Am Music II Tour In March

Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Travis Barker and Mixmaster Mike join 24-city tour. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Lil Wayne is hitting the road this March for his I Am Music IITtour, the sequel to his record-setting 2009 trek that grossed the superstar over $40 million. On Monday (January 24), the New Orleans MC announced the outing, on which Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Travis Barker and Mixmaster Mike will join him as opening acts. The 24-city tour opens March 18 in Buffalo, New York, and will feature stops in Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Houston and Atlanta, among other locations. Tickets go on sale February 4 through Live Nation. After keeping a low profile since his release from prison late last year, Weezy has returned his career to full throttle so far in 2011. Earlier this month, he contributed to Nicki’s “Roman’s Revenge 2.0,” and he filmed videos for his “6 Foot 7 Foot” and DJ Khaled’s “Welcome to My Hood.” The I Am Music II Tour dates, according to Cash Money Records:

Stalley Is Shooting For Greatness On Lincoln Way Nights

Ohio native gave up NBA aspirations and tells Mixtape Daily, ‘I’m more than an MC.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Stalley Photo: Courtesy of Stalley Fire Starter: Stalley In person, upstart rapper Stalley is unassuming and measured. But once the former high school sports star gets in the booth, he delivers with the same kind of authority that landed him on the University of Michigan men’s basketball team. Now, on the cusp of releasing his next project, Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music), a mixtape set to drop in February, the Ohio native is poised to make the transition from underground sensation to starter. “I’m more than an MC, I’m actually a writer. I can write songs. I can write good songs, and that’s what I want to do,” Stalley told Mixtape Daily. “That’s what I did on this project. I wrote out full songs, with ill concepts, ill lyrics and ill beats. Everything is put together. I want to be a great American writer, not just an MC, not just a rapper. So to be that, is just amazing to me.” The Creative Control/ Ski Beatz affiliate first made noise last year with his Madlib-inspired project, MadStalley: The Autobiography. Since then, he’s made his mark in a variety of ways, including blog partnerships with Slam magazine and HighSnobiety, a clothing sponsorship with 10 Deep and putting out the rumbling track “Hercules.” Now, three years after giving his undivided attention to hip-hop — back-to-back injuries at Michigan and then Long Island University shifted his focus — he’s beginning to see the payoff. That decision wasn’t easy for the Massillon native: His Ohio hometown is obsessive about high school sports (check the movie “Go Tigers” ), but Stalley was able to channel that intensity into the laidback Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music) collection. “When you’re someone known to be a lyricist, when you’re writing certain music, it comes off as dumbing it down,” he explained of searching for a sound over punchlines. “And people are confused, ‘Is this good?’ ‘Cause you’re used to this super lyrical dude. I took that and put it to the side and was just me. I spoke my story in a deeper way over deeper beats. So, I’m really happy with it. I’m becoming the artist I want to be.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Stalley, Rick Ross

A “Lil Positivity”: Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Upgraded To “Serious Condition”

Psycho Jared Loughner’s main target in the Arizona mass shooting is beginning to recover from her injuries as families continue to grieve and ask why. The congresswoman shot in the January 8 mass shooting in Arizona reached another milestone as mourners said goodbye to one of her staff members and a retired construction worker who died shielding his wife. U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was upgraded from critical to serious condition Sunday, eight days after being shot in the head at a public event. “The congresswoman continues to do well,” University Medical Center said in a statement. The two other shooting victims still hospitalized were both in good condition, the hospital said. On Sunday, the funeral for Dorwan Stoddard took place in Tucson. Witnesses said when the gunfire rang out, Stoddard, 76, was trying to protect his wife, Mavy, when he was shot in the head and fell onto her. A memorial for Gabriel “Gabe” Zimmerman, 30, also took place Sunday. Zimmerman was director for community outreach on Giffords’ staff and was engaged to be married. Cameras were not allowed inside the memorial. Footage from KGUN showed people leaving the event, some of them stopping to embrace one another. In addition to Stoddard and Zimmerman, those killed included 9-year-old Christina Green; Arizona’s chief federal judge, John Roll; Dorothy Morris, 76; and Phyllis Schneck, 79. A total of 19 people were shot at the “Congress on Your Corner” event at a Tucson supermarket. Authorities believe Giffords was the target of the mass shooting that left six dead and another 13 wounded. A 22-year-old suspect, Jared Lee Loughner, is in custody. The contentious issue of gun control was put in the spotlight Saturday when one of the 13 wounded in the attack was involuntarily committed to a county mental services unit after he made threats against a Tea Party member at a town hall event in Tucson. James Eric Fuller, 63, photographed Trent Humphries and said, “You are dead,” when Humphries began speaking at the event, according to Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jason Ogan. Humphries told CNN that Fuller’s comment came when the town hall discussion turned toward the issue of gun control. “I was asked to give my thoughts on gun control laws and perhaps the passage of new laws,” Humphries said of the incident. “I said something to the effect that although gun rights and laws are not necessarily the primary focus of the Tucson Tea Party, our community needs to be given the opportunity to allow some time to pass and people to heal before we start this type of political dialogue.” SMH, we hope some good comes out of this mess in the long run. Swizz Beatz Says No Monster Mondays Tracks Will Make Haute Living

‘That’s really just a forum for people to promote great music,’ producer says of weekly free-music series. By Mawuse Ziegbe Swizz Beatz Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News Swizz Beatz is leaving his free music on the Web. The Grammy-nominated producer’s weekly Monster Mondays series of gratis ear goodies follows in the footsteps of fellow MC and songsmith Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays campaign , but unlike ‘Ye, Swizzy maintained that his upcoming Haute Living album will be largely free of Monster records. “Monster Mondays is its own entity for right now. But will I put my first single on Monster Mondays? 100 percent. Monster Mondays, Swizzworld,100 percent. I’m gonna promote my stuff when it’s time,” Swizz recently told MTV News. “That’s really just a forum for people to promote great music, which is now turning into them shooting videos for it, labels putting up budgets for it. It’s just a great forum.” True to the spirit of the initiative, some of the music has already turned up on other projects, like the Diddy-Dirty Money track “Ass on the Floor,” which first hit the Web via Monster Mondays but ultimately ended up on the trio’s debut LP. So far, everyone from Ace Hood to Busta Rhymes has participated in the campaign — which kicked off in October — but Swizzy singled out his team-up with lyrical legend Rakim as his personal highlight of the series. “My favorite song on there is ‘King Tut.’ Getting a chance to work with Rakim and let people to just hear him, like, in 2010 when he did it. Like, that’s Rakim right there. Just to be able to say that I did that was super fun and [there’s] no politics involved. We don’t gotta deal with nobody. It’s no politics — I’m not talking to no labels, no management. It’s like, ‘Yo, you either wanna do it or not,’ ” Swizz explained of the project’s energy. Swizz has also switched up Kanye’s original music-centric blueprint by putting out a brief documentary of the creation of “Speechless,” a track that features his superstar wife Alicia Keys and longtime Ruff Ryder crony Eve riffing over Yeezy’s “Devil in a New Dress” beat. As the hitmaker is apparently in full-on collaborative mode — outside music, Swizz has also struck up partnerships with Reebok and luxury car company Aston Martin — he also got the production pupils from his New York University class in on the Monster Monday action. “Then taking it to what I did with my wife with the documentary with her and Eve, taking a whole other side and adding a documentary vibe to it. The biggest thing out of the documentary, other than them seeing the process, was it was done by some of my students from NYU,” he said. “Just taking that and adding talent with talent, it’s just fun. It’s all fun.” What Monster Mondays track do you like best so far? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Swizz Beatz
