Sarah Palin aide helped Nixon dump Jews from government

WASHINGTON – A top adviser to GOP star Sarah Palin was once dispatched by ex-President Richard Nixon to sweep Jews out of government service, newly released tapes show. Nixon aide Fred Malek's role as what Democrats call a “Jew counter” for the disgraced President was already well known, and he has spent decades apologizing for activities that later cost him a Republican National Committee job in the 1980s. But he remains a prominent GOP powerbroker. “The government is full of Jews,” Nixon griped to chief aide H.R. Haldeman in a July 1971 Oval Office recording released by the University of Virginia's Miller Center on Thursday. “Most Jews are disloyal.” The Republican President, who resigned amid the Watergate scandal in 1974, said he wanted Malek in charge of cleaning Jews out of “any sensitive areas.” “We've got to get a man in charge who is not Jewish to control the Jewish – do you understand?” Nixon said. “I sure do,” Haldeman answered. Ultimately, Malek turned over a list of more than a dozen Jews in the Bureau of Labor Statistics, files show. Most were fired. The Democratic Party fired off at least 13 e-mails to reporters blasting Malek – who ran George H.W. Bush's 1992 campaign – and forwarded unflattering stories about the new tape. Malek was recently named a budget adviser by Virginia's Republican governor, Robert McDonnell. “As Mr. Malek has said before, he has made mistakes in his life for which he has apologized, atoned and learned from,” Malek's spokesman Mark Corallo said. Back in 1971, Nixon only appeared dimly aware of the background of the West Pointer and Vietnam vet. “Malek is not Jewish?” he asked Haldeman, who replied that Malek was not. Many prominent Jews have rallied behind Malek, a successful GOP businessman and philanthropist, including Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), The Washington Post reported. Tastes Like Chicken: The Quest for Fake Meat

PART ONE… http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1993883,00.html?hpt=C2 Tastes Like Chicken: The Quest for Fake Meat By John Cloud Monday, Jun. 14, 2010 The desire to eat meat has posed an ethical question ever since humans achieved reliable crop production: Do we really need to kill animals to live? Today, the hunger for meat is also contributing to the climate-change catastrophe. The gases from all those chickens and pigs and cows, and from the manure lagoons that big farms create, are playing a part in global warming. So the idea of fake meat has never been more alluring. What if you could cut into a juicy chicken breast that wasn't chicken at all but rather some indistinguishable imitation made harmlessly from plant life? This spring, scientists at the University of Missouri announced that after more than a decade of research, they had created the first soy product that not only can be flavored to taste like chicken but also breaks apart in your mouth the way chicken does: not too soft, not too hard, but with that ineffable chew of real flesh. When you pull apart the Missouri invention, it disjoins the way chicken does, with a few random strands of “meat” hanging loosely. (Watch TIME's video “Turning Powder Into Poultry.”) The vegetarian world is buzzing about the breakthrough in Missouri. “Along with ham, chicken has always been the holy grail,” says Seth Tibbott, 59, the creator of Tofurky and the dean of soy-meat inventors. Tibbott's Oregon-based Turtle Island Foods has become famous for its surprisingly full-flavored fake turkey. But Tibbott says efforts to create a credible fake chicken have foundered because of chicken's unique lean texture and its delicate flavor. (“Turkey has a gamier flavor,” he says, “and it's easier to match stronger flavors.”) Like his competitors, Tibbott is now investigating whether to buy the Missouri product. A meat analogue that not only looks like chicken but also works in your mouth like chicken has great market potential. According to the Soyfoods Association of North America, a Washington-based trade group, annual sales of soy products totaled $4.1 billion in 2008, up from $300 million in 1992. But $4.1 billion is, to use a food metaphor, just peanuts. Americans spend something like half a trillion dollars on real meat every year. A meaty-tasting alternative that could capture even a tenth of this market would make someone very rich. The University of Missouri team may finally have cracked the code. For several years, Fu-Hung Hsieh — a biological-engineering professor who, at his previous job at Quaker, figured out how to use glycerin to soften the raisins in the company's granola — had wondered how to solve the fake-chicken problem. The answer was certainly going to be a combination of soy, wheat gluten, oil and water — the building blocks of most fake meats, including Tofurky. But in what combination? And how would you get it to transform from a congealed goo into a believable simulacrum of chicken? Hsieh, a slight man who was born in Taiwan and educated at Syracuse, worked on the problem in a concrete-floored lab with an unlikely partner, Harold Huff, a tall and gruff native Missourian who runs the mechanical parts of Hsieh's lab. (See pictures of what makes you eat more food.) What has confounded fake-meat producers for years is the texture problem. Before an animal is killed, its flesh essentially marinates, for all the years that the animal lives, in the rich biological stew that we call blood: a fecund bath of oxygen, hormones, sugars and plasma. Vegan foods like tofu, tempeh (fermented soy) and seitan (wheat gluten) don't have the benefit of sloshing around in something so complex as blood before they go onto your plate. So how do you create fleshy, muscley texture without blood? Read more: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1993883,00.html?hpt=C2#ixzz0q7W… CONTINUED… added by: EthicalVegan

Lindsay Lohan Singles Out ‘The Hangover’ For Best Movie

‘It was actually on the other day at my apartment,’ the actress says at the MTV Movie Awards. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lindsay Lohan at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — We’re not sure if she was making a good-natured joke about her legal situation , but when asked on the red carpet of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards which of the Best Movie nominees was her favorite, Lindsay Lohan singled out Todd Phillips’ blockbuster comedy “The Hangover.” “I thought ‘The Hangover’ was hysterical,” Lohan said, offering an example of her devotion to Phillips film. “It was actually on the other day at my apartment. It was really funny.” At the same time, Lohan admitted that “The Hangover” was just one of her favorites among the nominees, which include “Avatar,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” and, of course, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Lohan explained, “I’m a fan of all of them, and they’re all different. I mean, ‘New Moon’ has this sci-fi element and I know ‘Avatar’ does too.” Lohan has appeared at several past MTV Awards ceremonies, including in 2004, ’05, ’07 and ’08, where she was a presenter and attendee at both the Movie and Video Music Awards. Meanwhile, Lohan shared the red carpet with the castmembers of “Jersey Shore,” a show which she says she’s familiar with, even though it hasn’t prepared her for conversations with its resident lothario, Mike “The Situation.” When asked what a conversation would be like between the two, she said, “I haven’t watched it that much, so I don’t know. We’ll have to see when I meet him.” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com. Aziz Ansari Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

2010 MTV Movie Awards host’s movie roles include comedic performances in ‘I Love You, Man’ and ‘Funny People.’ By Larry Carroll Aziz Ansari Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic He’s been a Human Giant, stolen scenes from folks like Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler, and waged a big battle with IMAX. Now, he’s ready for prime time as host of the MTV Movie Awards . And if you don’t already know the 411 on Aziz Ansari, well, you’d better keep reading. When the 27-year-old funnyman landed the gig as host of the 2010 Movie Awards, his name started trending faster than a recently deceased Golden Girl. Everyone had questions about his background, and celeb buddies like Sarah Silverman , Kristen Bell and Diddy were happy to provide answers — even if we’re pretty sure most of them were made up. “One time, young Aziz got stuck under a TV,” Diddy said of one of the formative moments in Aziz’s youth. “He was trapped under there for six years. Six years.” The real story began in the comedy gold mine of Columbia, South Carolina, where Ansari was born and raised, eventually matriculating at New York University and honing his craft in the evenings at the Upright Citizen Brigade Theatre. Ansari first made a name for himself in 2005 when Rolling Stone magazine put him on their “Hot List” for his comedy skills, and constant touring alongside folks like Flight of the Conchords and the Comedians of Comedy made his spotlight shine brighter. Littering his material with up-to-the-minute references to pop culture and his love of Facebook and Twitter, Ansari began collaborating with funny friends Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer to make short films, which eventually became the 2006 breakout series “Human Giant.” Meanwhile, he proved himself as one of Hollywood’s MVPs with tiny-but-memorable roles in everything from “The Rocker” to “Observe and Report” to “I Love You, Man” — breaking through most memorably as scene-stealing, Dane Cook-like comedian Randy in Judd Apatow’s “Funny People.” In 2009, he was cast opposite Amy Poehler in “Parks and Recreation,” and although the reviews and ratings weren’t great at first, the show would soon turn a creative corner. Like any great comedian, Aziz also has a tendency to sometimes tell it like it is too much, resulting in a dust-up in 2009 with IMAX. “IMAX is whoring out their brand name and trying to trick people,” Ansari wrote on his blog after paying extra to see a movie that was played on a smaller screen than the large-format company normally uses. The company shot back , but the message was clear, and Ansari’s sizable following seemed to appreciate him stepping out of his funnyman box for a cause close to his heart. So, who exactly is Aziz Ansari? A handicapper ? A wild card ? An aficionado on naked celebrities ? The truth might be a little bit of everything all tied together — including one hell of a funny host. Before Oil Spill, It Was Unclear Who Was in Charge of Rig – The New York Times

PART ONE… http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/06/us/06rig.html?hp June 5, 2010 Before Oil Spill, It Was Unclear Who Was in Charge of Rig By IAN URBINA NEW ORLEANS — Over six days in May, far from the familiar choreography of Washington hearings, federal investigators grilled workers involved in the Deepwater Horizon disaster in a chilly, sterile conference room at a hotel near the airport here. The six-member panel of Coast Guard and Minerals Management Service officials pressed for answers about what occurred on the rig on April 20 before it exploded. They wanted to know who was in charge, and heard conflicting answers. They pushed for more insight into an argument on the rig that day between a manager for BP, the well’s owner, and one for Transocean, the rig’s owner, and asked Curt R. Kuchta, the rig’s captain, how the crew knew who was in charge. “It’s pretty well understood amongst the crew who’s in charge,” he said. “How do they know that?” a Coast Guard investigator asked. “I guess, I don’t know,” Captain Kuchta said. “But it’s pretty well — everyone knows.” Looking annoyed, Capt. Hung Nguyen of the Coast Guard, one of the chief federal investigators, shook his head. The exchange confirmed an observation he had made earlier in the day at the hearing. “A lot of activities seem not very tightly coordinated in the way that would make me comfortable,” he said. “Maybe that’s just the way of business out there.” Investigators have focused on the minute-to-minute decisions and breakdowns to understand what led to the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, killing 11 people and setting off the largest oil spill in United States history and an environmental disaster. But the lack of coordination was not limited to the day of the explosion. New government and BP documents, interviews with experts and testimony by witnesses provide the clearest indication to date that a hodgepodge of oversight agencies granted exceptions to rules, allowed risks to accumulate and made a disaster more likely on the rig, particularly with a mix of different companies operating on the Deepwater whose interests were not always in sync. And in the aftermath, arguments about who is in charge of the cleanup — often a signal that no one is in charge — have led to delays, distractions and disagreements over how to cap the well and defend the coastline. As a result, with oil continuing to gush a mile below the surface in the Gulf of Mexico, the laws of physics are largely in control, creating the daunting challenge of trying to plug a hole at depths where equipment is straining under more than a ton of pressure per square inch. Tad W. Patzek, chairman of the Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering Department at the University of Texas, Austin, has analyzed reports of what led to the explosion. “It’s a very complex operation in which the human element has not been aligned with the complexity of the system,” he said in an interview last week. His conclusion could also apply to what occurred long before the disaster. CONTINUED… added by: EthicalVegan

Transplanting Coral As a Cheap, Easy Way to Restore Reefs?

Photo via NOAA Could restoring damaged reefs be as easy as super gluing corals to new shelves and ledges? Perhaps so, according to research done by Dr. Graham Forrester from the University of Rhode Island, and a team of scientists, students and locals who worked to restore a dead reef in White Bay in the British Virgin Islands. After focusing on a specific variety of elkhorn coral often damaged during storms, they found that after transplanted, corals reattached themselves after three months and after 4 years had become large adult corals. Dr. Forrester thinks that perh… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Green Food Choice May Not Be So Green

ScienceDaily (Apr. 1, 2010) — If everyone became vegan and so ate only fruit and vegetables, then the reduction in greenhouse emissions for the whole of food consumption would be a mere 7%. The widespread adoption of vegetarianism would have even less impact, while organic food production actually leads to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Those are the conclusions of a research paper published in the journal Progress in Industrial Ecology. Helmi Risku-Norja and Sirpa Kurppa of MTT Agrifood Research Finland, working with Juha Helenius of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Helsinki, have determined that the cultivation of soil for whatever purpose, whether growing crops or raising livestock is the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions in food production, not fertiliser production, animal husbandry, nor agricultural energy requirements. The team explains that for current average food consumption, in Finland, emissions from soil represent 62% of the total emissions. Greenhouses gases released by cows and sheep account for 24%, and energy consumption and fertiliser manufacture about 8% each. The greenhouse emissions performance for extensive organic production is poor, they explain, despite this approach to farming being considered the “green” option, the lower efficiency requires the cultivation of greater areas of soil, which counteracts many of the benefits. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions through food consumption would require large-scale changes among the entire population, the team points out. They suggest that rather than stressing the impact of an individual citizen's dietary choices, we should be paying more attention to social learning and to the notion of working towards food sustainability and security. In general, sustainable consumption might be possible by introducing services to substitute for material consumption. Although food itself cannot be substituted, a lot can be done at the household level to improve sustainability of food provisioning and reduce food wastage. “There is a pressing need to design effective policy measures,” says Risku-Norja. “Consumer information is important from the viewpoint of food and sustainability education, leading eventually to adopting more sustainable lifestyles in the coming generations,” the team concludes. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100401101521.htm added by: versasrev

Garcelle Beauvais to Divorce Mike Nilon

After outing husband Mike as a cheater earlier this spring, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon is officially ready to ditch the second half of her hyphenated last name. In court documents unearthed by E! News, the actress filed for divorce from Mike Nilon, her husband of nearly nine years, citing irreconcilable differences. In April, she accused Mike of cheating on her in a furious email to colleagues at his CAA agency. Subject line: “Tiger Woods / Jesse James / Mike Nilon .” The message read: “What do they have in common. I found out today that MY husband of almost 9 yrs has been having an affair for 5 yrs with some slut in Chicago. I am devastated!!!! And I have been duped!! Our boys don’t deserve this!” No word on said slut’s ID. Mike Nilon has been likened to Tiger Woods and Jesse James. He would need far more mistresses for that to be a fair comparison, but he still sounds like an a$$ . The pair wed in 2001 and have 2-year-old twin sons Jax Joseph and Jaid Thomas, born in 2007 just months after Playboy ‘s Garcelle Beauvais nude spread. Soon after her email went public, the former NYPD Blue star said: “My focus at this time is my kids and healing the pain. There will be no further comment.”
