REVIEW: Mind-Blowingly Charmless Katherine Heigl Will Rob You Blind in One for the Money

One for the Money feels like the forgotten pilot for a TV show that wasn’t picked up for series. Watch as Stephanie Plum ( Katherine Heigl ), Trenton divorcee-turned-bounty hunter, hunts down bail skippers in her high heels while trying to choose between troubled cop Joe Morelli (Jason O’Mara) and badass fellow bond agent Ranger (Daniel Sunjata) — Tuesdays on USA! Plum is the creation of author Janet Evanovich and the basis of a bestselling 18 novel franchise, and if you squint at this big screen adaptation (directed by Julie Anne Robinson, of  The Last Song and episodes of Weeds , Grey’s Anatomy,   2 Broke Girls and others) you can make out some of the character’s potential appeal — she’s an everywoman who discovers an unexpected talent for a tough gig, an outspoken Jersey girl who refuses to let the fact that she’s out of her comfort zone stop her from getting the job done, etc, etc. But as played by Heigl, Stephanie is mind-blowingly charmless, the latest variation of the on-screen persona the actress has mysteriously embraced — the prissy, once-wronged gal prone to bouts of inconveniently timed clumsiness and acrimonious banter with her eventual love interest. I don’t dislike Heigl on principle, but it’s all too easy to call out everything that’s gone wrong with the romantic comedy in recent years by way of her filmography. Her characters apparently need to be subjected to a journey of humiliating comeuppance in order to win over/come around to their unlikely loves — the rom-com as punishment fantasy. Here her hostile Romeo, Morelli (no one refers to him by his first name), is the roguish town heartbreaker who’s on the lam after having been charged with murdering Ziggy Kuleska, a local tough involved in some major criminal activity. For Stephanie, Morelli’s more serious offense is not calling her back after relieving her of her virginity in the back of a bakery when they were in high school, for which she still bears a grudge. ( One for the Money ‘s tendencies to see things like murder only as vexing complications in its protagonist’s personal life speaks both to its tonal confusion and to how minor the case around which it’s theoretically structured actually is to the film as a whole.) Stephanie will net $50,000 if she can bring the man in, though the first time she finds him she realizes she doesn’t actually have a way to do that unless he agrees to come with — and he insists he’s innocent. Heigl and O’Mara snipe at each other with the sizzling chemistry of two people who can’t wait to whip out their BlackBerries and check their email as soon as a take is over. The pair’s rictus pantomime of sexual tension is countered by Stephanie’s relationship with the hyper-competent and permanently Kevlar-clad Ranger, whom she describes as “Michelangelo’s David dipped in caramel,” and who serves as an alternate aloof romantic possibility as well as a tutor in the ways of bounty hunting. He’s more superhero and plot device than person, but he’s at least not burdened with the New Jersey accent Heigl and O’Mara gamely, unsuccessfully attempt. Stephanie is supposed to be earthy and sassy, not qualities Heigl is able to summon, but she’s also problematically written as somewhere between active if imperfect heroine and Bella Swan-style object in need of rescuing. She’s terrible at what she does, even for a beginner — a running gag about her having to rummage through her purse for her gun at urgent moments is enough to make you want to bang your forehead on the theater seat in front of you. She gets one person killed and another badly beaten, and she frequently places herself in danger, requiring the intervention of Morelli or Ranger. The tension between the allure of being saved and protected versus the desire to do things oneself is by far the most intriguing part of  One for the Money , because the film (which was written by Stacy Sherman, Karen Ray and Liz Brixius) has no idea how to balance the two and ends up instead making Stephanie seem like an indulged annoyance. One for the Money ‘s TV pilot air is furthered by the flat look of the film, and by characters who are introduced largely to have no other purpose, there to be given storylines in some (saints forbid) later installment. Annie Parisse is Mary Lou, the best friend Stephanie always calls for advice; Debbie Reynolds plays Stephanie’s loopy grandmother who shoots the roast the rest of the family is eating while fooling around with her granddaughters newly acquired pistol, because accidental domestic gun violence is always good for a laugh. Patrick Fischler is Vinnie, Stephanie’s sleazy cousin/boss, and Sherri Shepherd plays Lula, a brassy hooker who offers our aspiring bond agent information. John Leguizamo, Fisher Stevens and Leonardo Nam show up too. Hopefully the masses won’t, because there are 17 more of these books just waiting to be dragged, kicking and screaming and rummaging in their purses for their weapons, onto the big screen. Destiny’s Stepchild Michelle Williams Speaks On Meeting Baby Blue Ivy “She Is Absolutely Gorgeous!”

Uh-Oh, there’s some loose lips in the Knowles-Carter camp, and they belong to Michelle Williams! BeyBey’s fellow Destiny’s Child member recently revealed she’s already had a visit with Blue Ivy Carter and observed Bey and hubby Hov in their new parent roles. Beyonce’s former Destiny’s Child bandmate was among those who has already met Blue Ivy Carter, the singer’s first child with hubby Jay-Z, born in NYC on Jan. 7. “She is absolutely gorgeous. We were all in love,” Williams, 31, told USA Today at Saturday’s BET Honors in Washington, D.C. Beyonce, 30, Jay-Z, 42 and their little one have not yet been photographed since the much-reported birth went down in a posh, private “executive suite” at Lenox Hill Hospital two weekends ago. But the superstar couple “have already settled into their role of being parents, and it’s just awesome to see,” Williams added. Also at the BET event, fellow Destiny’s Child survivor Kelly Rowland was more reluctant to dish on the most talked-about baby of the new year. “That will be something that everybody will have to experience the same way I did,” the “Commander” singer said. “That’s for her parents to disclose, not myself.” See Kelly knows her role. She’s not getting kicked out of her godmother status just to get a couple quotes in the tabs. Source More On Bossip! Watch Elizabeth Olsen in the Real-Time, One-Take Creeper Silent House

Last year, Sundance It Girl Elizabeth Olsen had two notable films debut in Park City. One was Sean Durkin ‘s Martha Marcy May Marlene , which earned Olsen raves and new fans for her central turn as a paranoid cult survivor. Now comes Olsen’s second Sundance ’11 pic, Silent House , in which poor Olsen finds herself spooked by bumps in the night and possibly more insidious forces while stuck in a darkened abandoned house. Was it really shot in a single continuous take, as co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau claim? Is there any young actress quite as watchable in moments of terror as the younger Olsen? Watch the trailer and let us ponder these questions together. Silent House is a remake of the 2010 Uruguayan horror film La Casa Muda , which played the Cannes Film Festival and also used the one-take gimmick. As far as trailers go, this is how you do it. The “inspired by real events” angle has been done to death in modern horror (see: The Devil Inside ), but using Texas Chainsaw -style snapshot editing and voice-over makes it feel both fresh and retro at once. And then there’s the captivating power of Elizabeth Olsen’s face, fascinating even in terror, lit gorgeously within the constraints of a set that seems to rely on practical lighting. And hey! Her real-time ordeal lasts only 88 minutes. When’s the last time a movie promised not to take up too much of your day upfront? Verdict: Can’t wait to shiver and squirm along with Lizzie Olsen on March 9. In real time!

Can Bill O’Reilly, Ridley & Tony Scott Top These Other Past and Future Retellings of Lincoln’s Assassination?

In 1865, actor and Confederate loyalist John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in the balcony of Ford’s Theatre, committing one of the most notorious crimes in American history. In 2013, Fox News talking head Bill O’Reilly will team up with Tony and Ridley Scott for a two-hour National Geographic documentary exploring the events surrounding Lincoln’s death, adapted from Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever , co-written by O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. But with so many previous Lincoln assassination projects in the ether, what new ground can O’Reilly and the Scott brothers tread in Killing Lincoln ? Lincoln’s death, of course, was so violent, tragic, and significant an event that it inspired many a filmmaker over the years. D.W. Griffith made a film in 1930 — his second screen depiction of the act — entitled simply Abraham Lincoln , that examined the president’s life, taking a few creative liberties along the way. (You can watch it here in its entirety, if you’re so inclined.) In the same decade, John Ford made two movies with ties to Lincoln: The Prisoner of Shark Island , about the doctor who tended to Booth after the attack on Lincoln, and Young Mr. Lincoln , which focused on the future president’s career as a young lawyer. And as the decades went on, scores more depictions of Lincoln’s life and death were committed to celluloid as generation after generation of filmmakers sought to mine the event for the social and historical significance it bore to the shaping of America. Unfortunately, other attempts, like Robert Redford’s recent The Conspirator , proved downright snoozeworthy. Hence, it seems, O’Reilly and the Scott brothers’ attempt to jazz up the Lincoln saga with “feature-like re-enactments, rare historical archives and CGI.” CGI! O’Reilly and Dugard’s 2011 nonfiction book promised “history that reads like a thriller.” Set your DVRs for high intrigue at Ford’s Theatre! (And if that’s not enough Honest Abe for ya, there’s also Steven Spielberg ‘s Daniel Day-Lewis-starring Lincoln biopic and the promising Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter coming up later this year.) Regardless of how much adrenaline the O’Reilly factor pumps into recreating Booth’s dastardly attack in Killing Lincoln , I’m not sure it could stand up to the rollicking menace of this recreation, as seen in the major motion picture National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets : Or: Might it unearth new theories regarding what motivated Booth to pull the trigger, a la Family Guy ? In any case, there’s no way Killing Lincoln can capture the truth of the event quite like this sketch from The Whitest Kids U Know . I’m pretty sure this is totally historically accurate .

Here you go Studs and Queens! The Advocate has released it’s new list of the best places in America to be gay. Rather than to use the traditional census information, for the third year in a row, the list has been compiled based on thing that actually matter to the LGBT community… which apparently includes the WNBA. Here’s a diagram of the formula The Advocate used this year: That might explain why the cities we would have expected to see on this list didn’t make it. Hell, Atlanta barely made the top 10. Hit the flip and check out this year’s gayest cities.

Russell Brand Files For Divorce From Katy Perry After a Year of Marriage

Sad news for the fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand ‘s marriage: The pop star who provided the voice of Smurfette and her Get Him to the Greek husband have filed for divorce after just 14 months of wedlock. Now repeat after me: I will not let this Hollywood divorce ruin my New Year’s Eve . I will not let this Hollywood divorce ruin my New Year’s Eve. Earlier this afternoon, Brand — who just finished filming Adam Shankman’s ’80s musical movie Rock of Ages — issued a statement to the USA Today : “”Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.” News of the divorces arrives weeks after tabloid speculation that a split was impending. In honor of this sad news, let’s revisit an eerie Get Him to the Greek clip which shows Brand’s larger-than-life character Aldous Snow breaking up with his pop-star girlfriend (Rose Byrne) on a talk show.
