America’s First Black President Is Voted Most Admirable Man Three Years In A Row

Americans still love Barry O : His party may have suffered a shellacking in November’s elections, but President Obama remains the unchallenged champion on another front: For the third year in a row, he is by far the most-admired man. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton continues an even longer run, ranked in the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll as the most-admired woman for the ninth straight year. Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is second, as she was in 2009. Despite Americans’ unhappiness with the nation’s politics, politicians dominate both lists. The top 10 men include not only the president but also three living former presidents. Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton take the top three spots. Among women, nine of the top 11 are connected to politics through public service, political activism or marriage. “It’s all about power,” says Richard Slotkin, professor emeritus of American studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. “When we think of importance, we think politically, that’s really clear — with religion a close second, though Bill Gates beats out Pope Benedict. It’s almost like a register of power.” Not on either top 10 list: a Supreme Court justice, senator or House member, athlete or scientist. Conservative commentator Glenn Beck edges ahead of the Dalai Lama, who ranks 10th. Gates, a philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft, stands just behind South African icon Nelson Mandela and just before Pope Benedict XVI. Evangelist Billy Graham, tied for sixth, has made the top 10 every year the survey has been taken since 1955. The top 11 women (three are tied for ninth place) counts four first ladies, including Michelle Obama in fourth place. Celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie, both of whom pursue charitable causes, are on the list. Three of the women are leaders from abroad: Queen Elizabeth and former prime minister Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain and democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma. Barack Obama’s standing has fallen from the heady days after his election in 2008. That year, he was cited by 32%, a historic rating that trailed only Bush’s percentage in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 and President Kennedy in 1961. This year, Obama was named by 22%, and Bush was named by 5%. Some of the findings reflect a partisan cast. Obama is named by almost half of Democrats but just 6% of Republicans. Bush is the most-admired man among Republicans, cited by 11%. Hillary Clinton is cited by nearly a third of Democrats but just 5% of Republicans. Palin is the most-admired woman among Republicans, at 26%. Not everyone has a hero. Twenty-five percent declined to name a most-admired man, and 22% didn’t name a most-admired woman. About one in 10 chose a friend or relative. The Dec. 10-12 survey of 1,019 adults has a margin of error of +/–4 percentage points. SMH at Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck being on the list as well. Source

President Obama Personally Says “Thank You” To Eagles For Giving Mike Vick A Chance

Wow, Michael Vick is truly doing the damn thing! What has been a fairy tale year for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick has now apparently received a presidential seal of approval. In a National Football League season that has repeatedly intrigued with the unexpected, perhaps nothing has been so astonishing as Vick’s rehabilitation both as a person and a football player. He is on the short list of most valuable player candidates, and he has been equally lauded for what is by all reports earnest contrition for his part in running an illegal dog-fighting ring. Now, Vick has received indirect praise from President Obama. In his column on Sports Illustrated’s website Monday, Peter King reports that Mr. Obama called Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to thank the team for giving Vick a chance. Obama was “passionate about it,” Mr. Lurie told Mr. King, adding that the president said “it’s never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail. And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall.” Vick served 18 months in federal prison, and there was only tepid interest among NFL teams when he was released before last season. When the Eagles signed him in 2009, it was to backup to starting quarterback Donovan McNabb, who vowed to mentor Vick. Even this year, when McNabb left for Washington, promising youngster Kevin Kolb was named the Eagles’ starting quarterback, but Vick did not complain. To the contrary, he and Kolb reportedly struck up a cordial friendship, and all Vick’s comments about the situation were unequivocal in their support for Kolb. It was not until Kolb was injured early in the season that Vick got his chance, and his performances have turned the Eagles from a team scrapping to make the playoffs into a legitimate threat to reach the Super Bowl. Vick credits his ordeal with making him a better player. Arguably the best running quarterback in the history of the NFL, Vick has now added patience and better passing to his repertoire, making him a complete pro quarterback for the first time in his career. Obama’s comments come at a time when Vick is stressing the sincerity of his reformation. He recently said he would like to own a dog. He is currently prohibited form owning a dog, given that dogs in his fighting ring were maimed and killed. That’s what’s up…all Vick needs now is that MVP and a brand new multi-million dollar contract and he’ll be set! Source

Vanessa Hudgens Is ‘Good’ After Zac Efron Split

Actress says she’s hanging out with gal pals and ‘excited to see what the future is going to hold.’ By Jocelyn Vena Vanessa Hudgens celebrates her birthday in Las Vegas on Saturday Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron shocked fans when news broke that the “High School Musical” couple broke up. But as Hudgens celebrated her 22nd birthday in Las Vegas over the weekend, the actress assured fans that she’s doing well in a post-Efron world. “We’re good,” she told People at her birthday bash just a week after their split. Adding that she had a “good year,” Hudgens observed, “I worked a lot in 2009. I did two movies back to back, so this year I just hung out, took it easy, did a play, which was a lot of fun, did a movie and now the year is coming to an end before I know it.” Going solo into 2011, Hudgens said she also has a full schedule to look forward to. “It’s going to be a very, very busy year,” she said. “I have three movies coming out in the next year, so I’m excited to see what the future is going to hold.” She also spoke to Us Weekly at the party, which was attended by Ashley Tisdale and Brittany Snow. “They’re my best friends,” Hudgens said. “I got to have my girlfriends.” So, how are things between Vanessa and Zac since the breakup? “We’re good,” she said. While Hudgens didn’t have much else to say about the split, sources told the website that Efron is celebrating the single life. “He wants to put his whole ‘High School Musical’ past behind him and be known as a sexy solo actor like Leonardo DiCaprio,” a source said. “He was ready to experience life as a single man.” When news first broke that the pair has separated, friends close to the couple confirmed that neither party had cheated. “It’s nothing dramatic,” another source told E! News. “There’s no third party involved. They were together for so long. It just ran its course.” What do you think of Zac and Vanessa’s split? Tell us in the comments! ‘I wonder how people find out these things,’ Paltrow says of party attended by the couple. By Jocelyn Vena Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic This fall the world has been entranced by Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift’s romance , watching them canoodle their way through coffee shops and ice cream parlors. So when an Us Weekly report hit the Web indicating that Gwyneth Paltrow might have been the one to introduce them, USA Today made it its job to find out about the alleged November dinner party the Oscar winner hosted for the pair. “Where is this coming from?” Paltrow asked the newspaper. “I’ve just known Jake for a long time and he’s a great guy, and [husband Chris Martin] has a friendship with Taylor.” Paltrow, who’s currently doing press for her role as a country singer in the film “Country Strong,” added that she didn’t want to say much else about it. “Well, I’m scared to say,” she said. “It’s so weird. I wonder how people find out these things. It was a while ago, so I don’t know why it would come out today.” While Paltrow was tight-lipped, a source was eager to share all with Us. “Jake and Taylor were driven from the Dorchester Hotel to Gwyneth and Chris Martin’s house in Primrose Hill for dinner. Gwyneth seems to have played a role in their relationship,” the source said. Neither Swift nor Gyllenhaal has said much about their relationship, but back in November, shortly after the couple was first spotted together, Swift said , “I’m always optimistic about love. Yes, always, sometimes.” Related Videos The Evolution Of: Gwyneth Paltrow Related Photos The Evolution Of: Gwyneth Paltrow Related Artists Taylor Swift

Pesticidal Proteins (Bt) From GM Corn Plants Are Now Common In Midwest Streams

Short-lived, non-biting, adult lake fly – Chironomus plumosus. Golden Globes Snub ‘Lost,’ Embrace ‘Walking Dead’

The always-unpredictable Hollywood Foreign Press Association delivered some surprises in the TV categories. By Aly Semigran The cast of “Lost” Photo: ABC While the Emmys often serve up nods to the same old favorites, year after year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Globes are beloved for their unpredictability. In the TV category, the domination of shows like “Glee” and “Mad Men” wasn’t too surprising, but there were plenty of out-of-left-field choices and sad-face snubs to keep awards-show junkies amused on Tuesday morning (December 14). (Here’s a complete list of the 2011 Golden Globe nominations .) In the drama acting categories, a Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama nomination for Katey Sagal for her work on FX drama “Sons of Anarchy” ( The Atlantic raved that Sagal gave a “riveting performance as matriarch of a corrupt biker family”) may have been overshadowed by the “Huh?” factor of “Covert Affairs” star Piper Perabo also being placed on the list. Fans of AMC’s bloody good newcomer “The Walking Dead,” should be thrilled to see the show nominated with established heavyweights such as “Mad Men” and “Dexter” for Best Television Series – Drama. Another new show, HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” snagged a nod in the category. But devotees of the shows left off the drama list are bound to be vocal about the oversights. HBO’s “True Blood” and “Big Love” were left out. And after a love-it-or-hate-it series finale, bragging rights for biggest snub goes to “Lost,” which was shut out of the running completely. The groundbreaking show kept fans’ interest until the very end (especially with strong turns by cast members Michael Emerson, Terry O’Quinn and Matthew Fox), but apparently not the HFPA. The often-snubbed “Friday Night Lights” received zero nominations during a year that included stand-out performances by its cast (particularly Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton and Zach Gilford). “Come on, Golden Globes, no ‘Friday Night Lights,’ either?” ( Entertainment Weekly ‘s Ken Tucker complained. Elsewhere, Christina Hendrick’s continually impressive work on “Mad Men” (including tackling story lines of infidelity and pregnancy) somehow was overlooked. ( USA Today noticed some more obvious snubs including, “Breaking Bad” ‘s Aaron Paul, the 2010 Emmy winner for supporting actor in a drama, and “The Good Wife” ‘s Archie Panjabi, who took the Emmy last fall for best supporting actress in a drama. There were hardly any stunners in the comedic acting categories, except for, perhaps, the inclusion of “Hung” star Thomas Jane in
