Christina Aguilera Sparkles In ‘Burlesque’ First Photos

‘The art of the tease, the dance, beautiful women,’ the singer tells USA Today of what drew her to upcoming flick. By Eric Ditzian Christina Aguilera Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images More than a year before Christina Aguilera got back into the pop music game with Bionic, her first studio album since 2006, the signer decided to explore some artistic territory she’d never visited before: the big screen. In May 2009, Xtina signed on to star in “Burlesque,” a musical about a small-town girl who dreams of becoming a star. Now, we’re finally getting our first look at Aguilera in the fall release. “It’s sexy, it’s sensual,” Aguilera told USA Today. “The whole idea of burlesque has always intrigued me. The art of the tease, the dance, beautiful women — need I say more?” All that and more is on display in photos published by USA Today. . One image captures Aguilera in a leg-revealing, gold bodysuit as dancers flip and bow around her. Is this the film’s climatic scene? Is it a dream sequence? Fans will have to wait until the movie hits theaters in November to find out. Other pics show Aguilera with longer blonde locks: in her kitchen and at a nightclub with co-star Cher. “I love no-bullsh– women, and she’s the best of the best, an original trendsetter in her time and a legend in mine,” Aguilera said of Cher, who plays the owner of the burlesque club in the film. “I found her kind and warm. She had helpful advice and stories for days.” But Aguilera didn’t seem to need much advice, according to writer/director Steven Antin, who told the newspaper she didn’t take long to get the hang of a movie set. “She figured out how it works within weeks,” Antin said. “She is a little bit of a freak of nature and a perfectionist. This girl is a movie star.” What appealed to her about the role, Aguilera said, was that her character “wasn’t just a girl who comes to L.A. and makes it big. It was a girl who had suffered and felt pain, been in seven foster homes. She doesn’t let her past make her a victim. And that to me was so appealing.” Playing the character was so appealing, in fact, that the pop singer is already looking forward to taking on more movie roles. “I think people will definitely feel energized and excited,” she said. Librarian Tells a Patriot Act Story

Besides the Shakespeariana and Elizabethan maritime rarities on display, the highlight of the evening was the story former ALA President Carol Brey-Casiano told—for the first time in its entirety, she said—about an experience she described as the worst in her professional career. It involved a Texas Ranger, a lawyer named Paco, the Patriot Act, and the Merritt Fund. Shortly after the September 11 attacks in 2001, two men came into the El Paso (Tex.) Public Library where Brey-Casiano was (and still is) director. One man, wearing a white cowboy hat and a huge belt buckle, identified himself as a Texas Ranger. He told her a threat had been sent recently from one of the library computers and demanded to see the sign-up sheets. Brey-Casiano replied that she could not release patron records without a court order and that, in any case, the sign-up sheets were shredded every night. The ranger’s sidekick began citing the USA Patriot Act as authority, but she reminded him that it was a federal law, which cannot be invoked by a state law enforcement official. The two men left, but the next morning a court order arrived asking for specific sign-up sheets—ones that could not be handed over because they had already been shredded. The following Monday, Brey-Casiano got a call from the mayor of El Paso, who accused her of withholding information (a felony in Texas) and told her he was putting her on administrative leave. Knowing her rights, she insisted she had done nothing wrong and followed proper legal procedures. The mayor admitted it was out of his hands, since the Texas Ranger had filed the complaint. He agreed to let her stay on the job as long as she told no one about the situation—effectively a gag order—during the course of an official investigation of her actions. She immediately called the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom, which advised her to find a lawyer quickly. OIF Director Judith Krug told her she should apply for assistance from the Merritt Fund. She applied and received a grant of $1,000, which helped her pay for her lawyer, an El Paso attorney named Francisco “Paco” Dom

Report: Landon Donovan Knocked Up British Chick

U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan may be facing a crisis much bigger than his team’s elimination from the World Cup this past weekend – a forthcoming love child. A newspaper in the UK will allege that a British woman is pregnant by Donovan, who is separated from his wife, actress Bianca Kajlich, but not divorced from her. His relationship with Kajlich became the subject of great interest last week after they shared an emotional phone call following his winning goal against Algeria. Donovan, who played for the Liverpool football club Everton this winter, blew her a kiss during an interview, fueling speculation that the couple might reconcile. “It would surprise no one if Landon and Bianca were back together very soon,” said one of her friends. “They have remained in contact and are very close.” Landon Donovan is separated from wife Bianca Kajlich. The fact that he may have fathered a love child with someone else may not aid his bid to reconcile with her . The identity of Donovan’s baby mama is unclear at this time, as is how Bianca will feel about his attempts to win her back if this love child rumor proves to be legit. Regarding the pregnancy rumor, Donovan did not deny it might be true, telling Sports Illustrated’s Web site: “I was informed of the possibility during the World Cup.” “If I need to take responsibility, then I will provide the appropriate support,” he added. “This is a private matter, and I will refrain from further comment at this time.” Donovan has spent most of his career in the U.S., but played on loan in Liverpool earlier this year, becoming a fan favorite – apparently with one woman in particular. He was a hero for the USA at the World Cup, scoring three goals and guiding the team to the knockout phase, where they were eliminated on Saturday by Ghana.

Mary Matalin Battles Libs Arianna Huffington and Mark Green in New Radio Show

A new talk radio show launched this weekend that will certainly get a lot of attention from producers across the fruited plain if not from listeners. Called “Both Sides Now,” the program pits far-left internet publisher Arianna Huffington against conservative political consultant Mary Matalin. Unfortunately, there’s a glaring problem with the format: the host is the far-left leaning Mark Green who used to be the president of Air America Radio. As such, listeners will likely hear twice as many liberal views as conservative ones. Naturally, Green didn’t admit this in his debut announcement published at the Huffington Post Sunday: Welcome to the debut audio-blog of Both Sides Now w/ Huffington & Matalin. We’re a new nationally syndicated radio show whose name sort of conveys it all — Both Sides Now will be the first syndicated radio show that presents both sides with two prominent women. So instead of talk radio just being ideological monologues to the faithful, we’ll have two politically savvy women keeping each other on their toes. My goal as the host is to either clarify differences or bridge them. Clarify differences? Well, isn’t that special? Arianna’s got a far-left-leaning referee on the set to “clarify differences.” Readers are advised that Green co-authored 2004’s “The Book on Bush: How George W. (Mis)leads America” with the far-left writer Eric Alterman. His most recent work of “non-fiction” is “Change for America: A Progressive Blueprint for the 44th President,” which was co-produced by the far-left outlets New Democracy Project and the Center for American Progress; both are funded by George Soros. As such, having Green “clarify differences” between Huffington and Matalin is like having Yankee fans officiate a Yankees-Red Sox game. Nevertheless, as I am a HUGE fan of Matalin’s, it will be interesting to see how this format works. Stay tuned.

AP Breaking: Supremes’ Ruling ‘Casts Doubt’ on Chicago Handgun Ban

Lord have mercy, even when it hits him in the face, the Associated Press’s Mark Sherman won’t concede the obvious : “Cast doubt”? Is that what court rulings do now? A USA Today item has it right: Other sources describing the ruling accurately include:  CNN — “Court rules for gun rights, strikes Chicago handgun ban” Fox News — “High Court’s Big Ruling For Gun Rights.” From text: “Today’s ruling also invalidates Chicago’s handgun ban.” Reuters, as carried at the New York Times — “Supreme Court Rules Chicago Gun Ban Unconstitutional” As with the Washington, DC Heller case in 2008 , the real outrage is that the ruling was 5-4.
