USA Today Frets Obama Unable to ‘Infuse Courts with Women and Minorities’ – i.e. Liberals

The “deeply polarized confirmation process in the Senate” has “undercut Obama’s effort to significantly infuse the federal courts with more women and minorities,” USA Today’s Joan Biskupic fretted in a Wednesday front page article in which she refused to identify Obama’s nominees as liberals as she attached the positive “diversity” patina to Obama’s agenda without any regard for the irony such “diversity” is ideologically uniform. She led her June 16 story, “ Push for court diversity hits snag: Partisan rancor ties up action on Obama nominees ,” however, by noting the ideology supposedly pushed by President George W. Bush: “President Obama came into office determined to stop the rightward shift of the federal courts — after eight years of appointments by President Bush — and to add more diversity to the bench.” She then outlined Obama’s achievement: So far he is setting records for the number of women and minorities nominated to lifetime appointments. Nearly half of the 73 candidates he has tapped for the bench have been women. In all, 25% have been African Americans, 10% Hispanics and 11% Asian Americans. But, his noble quest has been thwarted: Yet as Obama tries to make gains in diversity among judges, he faces a deeply polarized confirmation process in the Senate. During his first 18 months in office, his administration has been thwarted by unprecedented delays. The situation, which has received little notice against the backdrop of a pending Supreme Court nomination and the administration’s complex legislative agenda, could undercut Obama’s effort to significantly infuse the federal courts with more women and minorities. Deep in her article, Biskupic at least acknowledged how Democrats had blocked a “diverse” nominee who happened to be conservative: This is a long-building situation. Senators on both sides recall old grievances and try to settle scores. The senior Judiciary Committee Republican, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, often invokes President George W. Bush’s nominee Miguel Estrada, whose nomination to the influential Washington, D.C.-based appeals court was filibustered by Democrats. Estrada, who would have been the first Hispanic on that court, withdrew in 2003, after two years of delays. From April: “ USA Today’s Biskupic Sees SCOTUS of ‘Ideological…Conservatives’ and ‘Pragmatic Liberals ‘”

Argentina 4-1 South Korea | World Cup 2010 match report

Gonzalo Higuaín scored the first hat-trick of the 2010 World Cup as Argentina overcame a protracted second-half wobble to secure a comfortable win over South Korea today. After scoring twice from set-pieces before the interval, the first of them an own goal, Diego Maradona’s side notched their first goals from open play as Higuaín scored his second and third from moves inspired by Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero, a substitute for Carlos Tevez. On another freezing day under a cloudless Johannesburg sky Maradona replaced Juan Sebastián Verón, nursing a calf injury, with Maxi Rodríguez, reverting to a straightforward 4-3-3 with Messi, Tevez and Higuaín interchanging across the front line. Effective set-pieces are becoming the unexpected hallmark of Maradona’s Argentina. After enjoying untroubled possession in the early stages against curiously tepid and unadventurous opposition, they took the lead in the 16th minute after Angel di María had been fouled by Oh Beom-seok on the left, level with the edge of the South Korean area. Messi took the kick, which brushed off the head of Martín Demichelis and struck the right leg of the unsighted Park Chu-young just below the knee, skimming into the net past the helpless Jung Sung-ryong. Sixteen minutes later, another foul in the left corner – this time on Tevez, by the combination of Kim Jung-woo and Oh – led to the second goal. Rodríguez tapped the ball to Messi and looped round to take the return before clipping in a diagonal cross that Nicolás Burdisso, a 23rd-minute replacement for Walter Samuel, glanced on to Higuaín, who headed in at the far post. A minute before half-time Messi came close to producing exactly the goal his fans have been anticipating when, from inside a thicket of six defenders around the D, he chipped a delightful shot that floated just wide of the right-hand post. The South Americans’ virtually unbroken dominance was rudely interrupted, however, in first-half stoppage time, when Lee Cheung-Yong stole in to rob the dilatory Demichelis on the edge of the area and flipped the ball neatly over Sergio Romero. In the third quarter of the match the South Koreans’ confidence grew along with their sense of adventure and Yeom Ki-hun should have equalised just before the hour, after Lee Chung-yong put him through with a fine pass. As Argentina defended with increasingly furrowed brows Jonás Gutiérrez picked up a yellow card that will cost him an appearance in Argentina’s final group match, against Greece. But then came the substitution of Agüero for Tevez and immediately the Atlético Madrid forward’s pass to Messi, provoked a jinking run which led to a first shot hitting Jung’s left foot and the follow-up effort deflecting off the near post to Higuaín. The Real Madrid centre-forward then completed his hat-trick with a far-post header from Agüero’s cross, the move again set up by Messi. Sunderland sign Belgium Under-21 goalkeeper Simon Mignolet

• 6ft 4in keeper brought in to battle Craig Gordon for No1 slot • ‘I’m sure he will push our current goalkeepers all the way’ Sunderland have completed the signing of Belgium Under-21 international goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Sint Truidense for an undisclosed fee. Mignolet, 22, rose to prominence when helping his hometown club to a fourth-placed finish in last season’s Jupiler League and was also chased by PSV Eindhoven. But he opted for a move to Wearside where he will challenge Scotland’s No1, Craig Gordon, for a place in the starting XI. The 6ft 4in stopper becomes Steve Bruce’s second summer signing following the capture of the midfielder Cristian Riveros, who is currently on international duty with Paraguay at the World Cup. “Simon is an excellent young goalkeeper and he has a lot more to offer,” said Bruce. “I’m sure he will push our current goalkeepers all the way next season. “He is a player that we have watched on a number of occasions, as have a lot of clubs in Europe over the last couple of seasons. We’re delighted to bring him to Sunderland. He’ll come back ready for the start of pre-season training and will be looking to push for a place in the team.” Sunderland Transfer window guardian.co.uk

World Cup 2010: Rio Ferdinand will not return to South Africa

• Injured England captain to take break with family • ‘Rio is making good early progress from his knee injury’ Rio Ferdinand will not rejoin the England party for the remainder of the country’s World Cup campaign. Ferdinand returned to Manchester on Sunday to have his knee injury assessed having sustained the injury – and been ruled out of the tournament – following a training ground accident with Emile Heskey. He had stayed in Rustenburg to watch England’s first game against the USA last Saturday. It had been thought the 31-year-old would head back South Africa but, having been assessed by Manchester United’s medical staff, it has been decided Ferdinand will take a short break with his family before returning to Carrington for more intensive treatment. “Rio is making good early progress from his knee injury,” United said. “Medical staff have advised a two-week recuperation period with his family before returning to Carrington to complete the rehabilitation process.” Although United have not put a timescale on Ferdinand’s likely return to action, given the two-week break he has now embarked on, there must be a doubt over the defender being part of the club’s summer tour to North America for which they depart on 12 July. There would be more confidence of him being available for the Premier League opener against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on 14 August and England’s friendly with Hungary at Wembley three days before that. Spencer Pratt: The Tweeting Rampage Returns!

Cut off by The Hills, and possibly by his wife, Spencer Pratt has been left alone with his thoughts. Fortunately, he still a Twitter account on which to share them. Without any reality show producers to worry about, the hothead returned to the social networking site after a prolonged absence, unleashing a fury of Tweets . No one is safe. While he did not directly address his separation from Heidi Montag , Spencer targeted Hills stars and strangers alike in a rant easily comprising 100+ Tweets. On Lo Bosworth: “Lo has been banging 60 year old rich guys on the side to keep up her look because she only gets paid few grand and plays star HAHA.” “I pray to see @lobosworth ugly ass out in a club now that i can do whatever i want without feeling bad for heidi! lo your [sic] f–ked! Wh-re!” Spencer Pratt has officially lost it . On Audrina Patridge, who he previously accused of getting “Tijuana plastic surgery”: “Audrina has fake everything. Damn we fakeass reality show foolios.” On Whitney Port, now the star of MTV’s The City : “No whitney port sucks and has ever since we were in high school together before all her surgeries.” On Heidi’s mom, Darlene Egelhoff: “it’s her fake mom. ask the government! darlene lied about everything she told Heidi. she stole heidi as a baby! Spreading the love to strangers as well, Spencer targeted a particular Twitter user from England who had been writing to him, sending replies. “Glad we didn’t let you in America foreigner b–ch! USA is to [sic] smart for you fool. log off our American website and go do something foreigner.” Heidi filed for legal separation from Spencer on June 8 with photographers in tow, igniting speculation that the couple was just scheming for publicity. With Spencer absent from The Hills and real life in recent weeks, however, you have to wonder if Heidi really did up and leave the nut job for good. NOTE : Follow The Hollywood Gossip on Twitter ! Ed Schultz Hates Country Star Lee Greenwood’s Patriotic Song ‘God Bless the USA’

Brian Maloney at Radio Equalizer found Ed Schultz on his radio show Tuesday mocked country star Lee Greenwood and his patriotic song “God Bless the USA,” which he suggested was an anthem for American imperialism. Remember when every time we invaded an oil-rich country or any time there was any kind of confrontation, we were subjected to — ad nauseam , I might add — [mock sings, really badly] “God bless the USA.” That Lee Greenwood song…I mean, Every single event! Every time we were marching to the flowers put at our feet in Iraq, it was more Lee Greenwood! [mock singing again] “God bless the USA!” Man, we need an oil spill song is what we need! We need to get somebody — [laughs at himself] Some idea, somewhere, some songwriter out there’s gotta come up with something, to remind us, just like Lee Greenwood reminded us that it was the right thing to do to love America and invade everybody. We need some song out there to remind us that, [sings] “It’s BP!” Greenwood’s song, written in 1983, expresses a love for our flag standing for freedom and for American soldiers: “I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free / And I won’t forget the men who died who gave that right to me.” Ed Schultz finds that too sickening to sit through. That’s not the worst attack on Greenwood. Snopes dismissed the smear that Greenwood was a Vietnam-era draft dodger. He was deferred because he was a father at 17.

Officer Punches Teenager in Face Over Jaywalking

According to the SeattlePI, there is a pedestrian overpass over Seattle’s Martin Luther King Way. Gallup Poll for June 16, 2010: Many Americans Say Gulf Beaches, Wildlife Will Never Recover

___ To see the various graphs, try clicking on this link. However, if it doesn't work, go to: gallup.com , and look for Poll Number 140762 _______________ June 16, 2010 Many Americans Say Gulf Beaches, Wildlife Will Never Recover Nearly all agree that full recovery will take 10 years or more by Lydia Saad PRINCETON, NJ — From what they have seen of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill rolling onto America's shores, nearly half of Americans (49%) believe that at least some of the affected beaches will never recover. Even more, 59%, believe normal levels for some animal species will never be restored. Predicted Timeline for Full Recovery of Gulf Shore Beaches, Wildlife (Including Fish and Birds) More generally, Americans foresee a very long road to recovery for both the U.S. beaches and wildlife affected by the BP oil spill. The vast majority believe it will be a decade or more, if at all, before either aspect of the Gulf environment is back to normal; few think a full recovery will happen within four years. Separately, Americans broadly agree that the oil spill will negatively affect the U.S. economy and the U.S. consumer. Roughly four in five believe the overall U.S. economy will be hurt, that gas prices will go up, and that food prices will increase. Possible Economic Effects of Gulf Oil Spill Women More Pessimistic Than Men About Undoing Oil Damage The most striking subgroup differences in views about the oil spill's impact are by gender, with women much more pessimistic than men. (Gallup has previously found women to be more concerned than men about environmental matters.) Sixty percent of women, compared with 37% of men, believe some Gulf beaches will never recover — a 23 percentage-point gap. Additionally, there is a 13-point gap between men's and women's perceptions of whether the affected wildlife will fully recover. Predicted Timeline for Recovery of Beaches Predicted Timeline for Recovery of Wildlife Women are also more likely than men to believe that gas prices will increase (83% vs. 74%), and that the U.S. economy in general will be hurt (88% vs. 78%). Bottom Line In his remarks when visiting the Gulf shoreline this week, as well as in his Oval Office address Tuesday night, President Obama has stressed the need for a long-term commitment to the oil spill cleanup. Americans may be getting impatient with BP and the federal government for not doing enough to cap the gushing oil rig and contain the leaked oil, but it appears they are resigned to a lengthy process to restore the beaches and wildlife, with perhaps limited success. Survey Methods Results for this USA Today/Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted June 11-13, 2010, with a random sample of 1,014 adults, aged 18 and older, living in the continental U.S., selected using random-digit-dial sampling. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is

What is it with USA Today getting all this first glimpses lately? On Tuesday, it was the ridiculous Hugh Jackman robot boxing movie Real Steel and now here comes the equally ridiculous big screen adaptation of The Smurfs . Hey, remember when everyone in Hollywood said audiences wanted originality and not reboots of popular ’80s brand names? Just kidding! After the jump, check out your first look at The Smurfs (shouldn’t this be subtitled “Take Manhattan”?) and find out why all the purists will be flaming message boards with hatred over a change in the Smurf mythology.
