Vampire Diaries stars Zach Roerig and Candice Accola have broken up. The two cast members, who kept their relationship off-screen very low-key, first got together in the fall of last year. Apparently it’s over now , though. No reason was given for the split, first reported by Us Weekly . In October of last year, Accola tweeted a photo of Roerig, writing, “Cheering on my man at his second paddle board race! He kicked some major a**.” Roerig also tweeted a photo of Accola in a bikini on the beach with “Go Zach!” written across her stomach. “My number one cheerleader!” he wrote. That was about it for public acknowledgements of their romance, however. Accola, 25, plays bubbly vampire Caroline Forbes on the hit CW show. Roerig, 27, plays Matt Donovan, always a fan favorite … in TVD death pools. The show definitely keeps its romances in house. Nina Dobrev hasn’t read Fifty Shades of Grey yet, but with her name floating around as a possible fit for the female lead, she might want to get on it! “All I’ve heard is that it’s very scandalous, to say the least,” the Vampire Diaries starlet told MTV. “I haven’t read it, but I’m intrigued … who knows?” “I mean, well, I guess we’ll have to see.” With co-star and real-life boyfriend Ian Somerhalder expressing interest in the role of Christian Grey, it’s no surprise Dobrev has been linked to Anastasia Steele. Working with Ian a second time isn’t as appealing to Nina as you night think, though. She said if she did play Anastasia, she’d prefer another guy . “I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” she said of herself and Somerhalder both starring in the movie adaptation of EL James’ erotic love story trilogy. “I think it’s best for any of the actors on The Vampire Diaries to kind of do their own things … and create new characters … if it’s the same people, the fans will alway see me as Elena and they’ll see him as Damon if we do a film together.” “I think it would be better [if] either he should get it or I should get it, but I know that apparently he’s really great for the role, so I hope he gets it!” Another pair of famous vampires, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson , have been talked about at length as good fits, especially considering that James initially modeled the books after Edward and Bella from the Twilight saga. Made in America festival curator says, ‘What people do in their own homes is their business, and you can choose to love whoever you love.’ By Jocelyn Vena Jay-Z Photo: Gilbert Carrasquillo/ Getty Images Jay-Z has long backed President Obama, and after last week’s headline-making news that Obama supports same-sex marriage , the hip-hop mogul is applauding the president for breaking new ground and helping bring progress in the gay-rights movement. “I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back,” Jay-Z told CNN in Philadelphia, where he announced the launch of the Made in America festival . “What people do in their own homes is their business, and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination, plain and simple.” Asked whether the declaration would cost Obama votes among religious African-Americans in his re-election bid, Hov said, “It’s really not about votes. It’s about people,” adding, “I think it’s the right thing to do as a human being.” Jay is hardly the first celebrity to come out in support of Obama’s comments. Everyone from “Jersey Shore” stars Snooki and JWoww to “Vampire Diaries” actress Nina Dobrev and boy banders the Wanted have all backed Obama. “It was definitely happy news, but I almost don’t want to applaud him too much, because I wish he would have done this a long time ago,” Perez Hilton told MTV News. “Having said that, it’s better that he did it than not. He could have waited until after the election. However, it’s clearly a calculated move in that he felt confident that this won’t hurt his chances at getting re-elected, and that’s why he did it.” Share your thoughts on this story in the comments below! ‘All I’ve heard is that it’s very scandalous, to say the least,’ Dobrev tells MTV News of the best-selling book. By Jocelyn Vena Nina Dobrev Photo: MTV News Nina Dobrev hasn’t read the best-selling “Fifty Shades of Grey” just yet, but with every young starlet’s name floating around as a possible contender for the female lead, literature student Anastasia Steele , she might want to start reading up. “All I’ve heard is that it’s very scandalous, to say the least,” the “Vampire Diaries” star told MTV News. “I haven’t read it, but who knows? I mean, well, I guess we’ll have to see.” Fans of the erotic trilogy might not mind seeing Dobrev get her S&M on with her “Diaries” co-star Ian Somerhalder in the big-screen adaptation of the E L James book. But she confessed that if she does play the part, she wouldn’t want to have Somerhalder playing the millionaire beau, Christian Grey . “I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” she said. “I think it’s best for any of the actors on the ‘Vampire Diaries’ to kind of do their own things … and create new characters. And as much as you try when you shoot a movie, if it’s two of the same people, the fans will always see you as … they’ll see me as Elena and they’ll see him as Damon if we do a film together.” So, that means “Fifty” fans will only get either Dobrev or Somerhalder if either gets cast in the film. And Dobrev is most certainly rooting for him. “I think it would be better [if] either he should get it or I should get it,” she said. “I know that apparently he’s really great for the role, so I hope that he gets it.” Given how sexy the book is, casting might not be the only challenge. Some fans are wondering how they can adapt the highly charged sex scenes for an R-rated version of the film . “Making this movie will absolutely be a challenge. It is going to take a devoted director who admittedly likes the books and understands that, first and foremost, this is a love story,” Lisa Parker from FiftyShadesFilm.com told MTV News. “If telling the love story is the main focus, then we do believe the steamy sex scenes can be shot and edited in a way to get us an R-rated movie rather than NC-17 … [the fans] are confident that Ms. James will protect the integrity of her story regardless of the ultimate rating.” Who would you like to see cast in the film version of “Fifty Shades of Grey”? Tell us in the comments.
‘Vampire Diaries’ star tells MTV News, ‘I’m glad that he’s supporting gay marriage, and hopefully others will follow suit.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Audrey Kim The Wanted Photo: Getty Images In the days since President Obama spoke up in support of same-sex marriage , celebrities have applauded the leader of the free world for his stance on the issue. Since the president’s interview with ABC News on Wednesday, many celebs ranging from Neil Patrick Harris to George Clooney have made it clear that they are pro-Obama. And, it seems, Obama’s message is spreading internationally, as famous people around the world are also giving him props. “I didn’t see the announcement when he made it, but I’ve heard obviously a lot about it, and I think it’s great that that man, the President of the United States, who is influential, who people really admire and listen to, is making such a statement, such a sort of controversial statement,” “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev shared at the launch of the “Like Her, Like Me” Seventeen magazine campaign where she debuted her “got milk?” ad. The Canadian native added, “I don’t think [it] should be controversial at this point because we’re living in the 21st Century, but I’m glad that he’s supporting gay marriage, and hopefully others will follow suit.” Much like Dobrev, British boy banders the Wanted are also giving two thumbs up to Obama. “I think it was a logical step, about time,” Jay McGuiness said. “I wish it was church-led in my opinion, but I don’t care, it’s out there now. Well done, Obama and Co! Even if it was for the right or wrong reasons, it’s definitely the right outcome.” McGuiness is referring to some criticism that the president made the announcement hot on the heels of his re-election campaign, after years of not taking a firm stance on the issue. At a press conference for “America’s Got Talent” on Thursday, judge Howard Stern noted that he wishes more will come from Obama’s declaration. “My feelings are very clear on this,” he said. “I wish the president actually had gone further. I wish he had said he was going to back some legislation on the national level.” Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton mirrored Stern’s sentiments when he spoke to MTV News the same day. “It was definitely happy news, but I almost don’t want to applaud him too much, because I wish he would have done this a long time ago,” Hilton said. “Having said that, it’s better that he did it than not. He could have waited until after the election. However, it’s clearly a calculated move in that he felt confident that this won’t hurt his chances at getting re-elected, and that’s why he did it.” Share your thoughts on this story in the comments below! Robert Pattinson, Ian Somerhalder, Ryan Gosling are fan favorites to play the dark and mysterious character in E L James’ novel. By Christina Garibaldi Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News People just can’t stop talking about “Fifty Shades of Grey.” E L James has set the literary world on fire with as erotic novel that explores the relationship between a dark and mysterious guy named Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, an innocent college graduate. The guilty-pleasure book features characters that James created in her “Twilight” fan fiction, and it’s now being made into a feature film . That, of course, has had Hollywood buzzing with casting rumors about who could play the role of Christian Grey. Fans of the trilogy already have strong opinions about the part, so MTV News caught up with some experts for their take. “Christian definitely needs to be clean-cut, but extremely sexy when disheveled,” Alison Genet of Twifans.com told MTV News. “I wouldn’t choose a man that is overly chiseled. No juicehead gorillas need apply. Hair that can be neatly brushed, but when playing, it’s loose and wild like Johnny Depp hair. Not super short.” Of course, the physical look of the actor has to fit, but Christian is also a complex individual, and most fans want an actor who can pull off all his many dimensions. “I just think that the actor needs to be able to portray being so intense,” Mags Vazquez from , “But also showing that vulnerability that he has in reality.” Casting rumors for the part of Christian have been heating up as of late, with names like “Twilight’s” own Robert Pattinson coming up. So, do fans want to see Pattinson make the transition from Edward Cullen to Christian Grey? “There’s the side that first fell in love with the characters as part of ‘Twilight’ fan fiction and can only see Robert Pattinson as Christian and/or Kristen Stewart as Ana,” Lisa Parker from FiftyShadesFilm.com explained. “Would we be disappointed if he/she/they were cast? Absolutely not.” Others disagree, however. “In regards to Robert Pattinson, I would like to see them move away from ‘Twilight’ so it can get its own identity,” Crissy Maier of Laters, Baby! said. Well, if Pattinson doesn’t land the role, there’s a chance another vampire could step in: “Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder. “I think Ian seems like a good fit visually, I haven’t watched ‘Vampire Diaries,’ but what I hear about his acting skills there, I’m hearing good things,” Maier said. Parker agreed, revealing that her readers have been backing Somerhalder since he expressed interest in the role during an interview with Ryan Seacrest. “We’re excited to see actors step up and say they would be interested in playing the leading man,” Parker said, adding, “With Ian Somerhalder being the first and a popular candidate judging from our Twitter timeline.” These super fans have suggestions of their own though, ranging from Matt Bomer to “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill . Not surprisingly, Ryan Gosling is also a favorite. “We are fans of the love story too, so we know exactly what qualities ‘FSOG’ fans see in different actors and actresses that make them appealing for the roles,” Parker said. “Have you seen the Dunhill London ads featuring Henry Cavill? Do they not scream ‘Fifty’? Have you seen Ryan Gosling’s GQ photo shoot? Grey silk tie anyone?” Genet of Twifanscom agreed, saying Gosling’s undeniable charm could make him the perfect Christian Grey: “Ryan Gosling, Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Gosling. Imaging him in jeans hung low on the hip.” “The one thing we know for sure is that with E L James as a collaborative partner in the casting process, we are confident that she will do what’s in the best interest of her famously loved characters.” Parker said. While visiting Ryan Seacrest’s show, The Vampire Diaries ‘ Ian Somerhalder revealed that he might be “potentially” up for the role of gazillionaire playboy/closet BDSM freak Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of E. L. James’ breathless erotica 50 Shades of Grey . To which I say: Yes. I’ll allow it. That said, Somerhalder was choosing his words so carefully it’s hard to tell exactly how far in the casting process he might be, so take it with a grain of salt. Oh, and enjoy the mental image of Ryan Seacrest listening to the squirmier parts of the 50 Shades audiobook at the valet stand. Somerhalder is a touch older than the 27-year-old bondage-obsessed hero of the 50 Shades trilogy, but as you can see from his hit CW show he may look 20-something for all of eternity. (Recall his turn in 2002’s The Rules of Attraction , lest ye think he’s just some pretty face from TV.) I still can’t believe they’re attempting to adapt the dirtiest, most melodramatic piece of Twilight fan fic I’ve ever read into a movie. Let’s hope Universal & Focus keep it authentically almost-porny. This movie can’t come fast enough, so to speak. [via Celebuzz ]
The late Claude Miller’s Thérèse D will close the 65th Festival de Cannes , the festival announced today. The adaptation of François Mauriac’s 1927 novel (adapted previously in 1962 by Georges Franju) stars French favorite Audrey Tautou ( Amelie ) in the title role as a free-spirited woman trapped in an unhappy marriage in 1920s France who poisons her husband out of desperation, then must suffer the consequences. UPDATE: According to a Cannes release, the full updated title of Miller’s film is Thérèse Desqueyroux . Miller, who worked with the likes of Bresson, Godard, and Truffaut before launching his own directing career with 1976’s La meilleure façon de marcher ( The Best Way to Walk ), twice previously vied for Cannes’ Palme d’or and won the Jury Prize for 1998’s La classe de neige ( Class Trip ) before passing away earlier this month at the age of 70. Full press release follows. Thérèse D. by Claude Miller, with Audrey Tautou in the title role, and Gilles Lellouche and Anaïs Demoustier, will be screened at the closing of the 65th Festival de Cannes on 27 May in the Grand Théâtre Lumière of the Palais des Festivals. Claude Miller’s final film is an adaptation of François Mauriac’s novel “Thérèse Desqueyroux”. On the 4th of April of this year, shortly after finishing the montage, the director succumbed to illness. This film is the final piece in his immense body of work, to which the Festival de Cannes and the director’s many admirers will pay tribute. “What thrills me in the filmmaking process is to focus on the interplay of appearances, gestures, looks, behaviour and to use them to try to intimate the inner lives of people, their secret garden, even though we only see them from the outside”. Claude Miller’s formative years were in Nouvelle Vague cinema, working as an assistant to François Truffaut, “the filmmaker of the intimate”. Through the evolution of his work, he created a universe that could speak to a very broad audience, from The Best Way to Walk (La meilleure façon de marcher) (1976) to The Grilling (Garde à vue) (1981), from Deadly Run (Mortelle randonnée) (1983) toThe Accompanist (l’Accompagnatrice (1992) and A secret (Un secret) (2007), from the Prix Delluc forThe Hussy (l’Effrontée) (1985) to the Jury Prize at the Festival de Cannes for Class Trip (la Classe de neige) (1998). As a politically engaged filmmaker, he also chaired the Association of Filmmakers and Producers (Association des réalisateurs producteurs) and was active in the “Club des 13”, a think tank for reforming the production system. By dedicating the closing night to him, the Festival de Cannes, along with his family, friends, producers, and distributers, is very pleased to pay tribute to the memory of Claude Miller. And the synopsis for Miller’s Thérèse D released last year : France, late 1920’s. Lovely and free-spirited, Thérèse marries her neighbor Bernard Desqueyroux, thus joining their respective properties in one vast estate. Bernard tolerates his brilliant, passionate young wife’s strong character and opinions, but she soon finds herself suffocated by the boredom of her provincial life and her husband’s intellectual mediocrity. She dreams of Paris, longs for stimulation and culture and, despite herself, starts to seek a way out. Until the day Bernard gets intoxicated with deadly arsenic… What starts as a mistake turns into an attempt to poison him. Thérèse is found out and, in addition to being disgraced in both her own and her husband’s families, she must face justice for her attempted murder. The heartbreaking torment of an astonishing and superb character, played by French star Audrey Tautou. Get more Cannes Film Festival updates here.
If the Tremor brothers were slightly less-deranged they might be the Southern-fried antiheroes of The Baytown Disco , whose trailer reveals a startling lack of disco and copious amounts of gun-battling, yee-hawing, and evil Billy Bob Thornton . (Oh, evil Billy Bob! How I love you.) Watch as Eva Longoria taps the trio of redneck bros to kidnap her godson — and in the process, invite road warriors, Thornton’s “whore assassins,” and Stefan from The Vampire Diaries to hunt them down — in Baytown Disco ‘s Smokin’ Aces -meets- Gigli trailer. The Oodie brothers are played by Clayne Crawford (who actually battled the Tremor bros. in the direct-to-video sequel Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball ), Daniel Cudmore ( Twilight , X-Men ), and Travis Fimmel; The “Southern whip-ass extravaganza” is directed by Barry Battles from his Black List ’09 script with Griffin Hood and also stars Andre Braugher (!), Meagan Good, Michael Rapaport, Paul Wesley, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Zoe Bell, and Agnes Brucker. The synopsis: The rousing rebel spirit of a family of Southern thugs takes off at breakneck speed in “The Baytown Disco” — a wickedly playful, high-velocity action-comedy in which three infamously ruthless Alabama brothers find themselves on the wrong side of crooked cops, relentless Feds, mad mobsters, road pirates, tomahawk-wielding bikers, tricky femme fatales and an unforgettable cast of characters as colorful as they are lethal when they finally try to do a single good deed. Academy Award® winner Billy Bob Thornton and Golden Globe winner Eva Longoria headline this wildly explosive, yet ultimately moving, tale of honor breaking out among thieves with madcap results. It all starts when the fetching Celeste (Longoria) has a falling out with her nefarious ex-husband Carlos (Thornton) who kidnaps her beloved son, Rob (Thomas Brodie Sangster). Knowing her ex can be a maniacal psychopath, not to mention a bit trigger-happy, she turns for help to the most bad-ass, lawless hit-man trio in Alabama: the Oodie Brothers. Ringleader Brick (Clayne Crawford, “24,” “The Glades”), mute wrestling phenom Lincoln (Daniel Cudmore, “The Twilight Saga”), and the baby of the brothers, the kick-ass G.I. McQueen (Travis Fimmel, “The Beast”) are known for being mean as a bag of rattlesnakes –and measly kidnap rescues are not on their menu of services. But when Brick is unexpectedly moved by Celeste’s plight, what he thinks is going to be an easy smash-and-grab job turns out to be the most hair-raising and hilariously intense adventure of his and his brothers’ harrowing careers. Suddenly the Oodies have their hometown Sheriff (Andre Braugher, “Men of a Certain Age,” “Salt”), in a tangle; a pesky DEA Agent (Paul Wesley, “Vampire Diaries”) on their trail, and Carlos and his heinous assortment of henchman out for their hides. With no one quite who or what they seem, they are headed for a showdown — and a shot at redemption — they never saw coming. The Baytown Disco is seeking distribution, release TBA.
