Is Rock Dead? Not If Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, More Can Help It

Rock bands had a hard time breaking through in 2010, but our critics say new indie groups might be nirvana for the genre. By Gil Kaufman Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig Photo: Karl Walter/Getty Images There was a time not long ago when good-old fashioned meat-and-potatoes rockers like Nickelback , Hinder and Disturbed frequently landed albums in the top 10 and reeled off solid chart singles. Then came a new generation of bands like MGMT , Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire who were heralded as the saviors of a limping-along genre that had been overtaken by pop cuties like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. “In 2010, we just didn’t see the people like the MGMTs, who potentially could have taken over the top from being a great niche artist to being a pop sensation [take off],” said Noah Callahan-Bever, editor-in-chief of Complex magazine, addressing the psychedelic duo’s confounding, sometimes confusing second album, Congratulations. But maybe it was just an off year and, as Elliott Wilson, founder and CEO of Rap Radar suggested, we’re due for the kind of musical flushing of the pipes we experienced back in 1991 with the rise of Nirvana. Back then, music was emerging from an era of spandex and lipstick rule by a generation of hair-metal bands like Poison and M

MTV News’ Best Albums Of 2010: The Readers React

MTV.com users sound off with their opinions on the list and their picks for the year’s top releases. By James Montgomery Some of James’ picks for the best albums of 2010 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, when MTV News published my annual Best Albums of the Year list, I wrote that “2010 may very well have been the best year for music in a long, long time … to the point where making a list of the 20 best [albums] was darn near impossible.” I wasn’t kidding, either. In fact, I was so sure I had missed some really great albums that I asked my readers to sound off with their picks. And, boy, did they ever! Over the past 24 hours, I’ve gotten tons of responses from fans all across the world (most of them angry, of course), each wondering why their favorite artist didn’t make the cut or, if they did, why they weren’t #1. There were thinly veiled threats, at least one call for me to be fired, a whole lot of curse words and even some rather spirited debate between Eminem and Kanye fans over just whose album was better. Of course, mixed in with all that madness, MTV.com readers also managed to suggest some very worthy albums that I had missed, make compelling arguments and even paying me a compliment or two. So I’d like to think that my list was a success … because, at the very least, the response it garnered proved that, unlike any other year in recent memory, 2010 really was bursting with great music — music people obviously felt very strongly about. Needless to say, I was impressed. So in order to keep the conversation going, I’m re-publishing some of the best responses here. But don’t think the debate is over … if you still feel like your voice hasn’t been heard, sound off in the comments below. And then head over to our Newsroom blog, where you can vote for your favorite album of 2010 . Because, really, I could argue about this stuff all day. On to the comments! “Props to MTV for putting Kanye at number 1 and for putting Rick Ross on the list. Teflon Don was incredible and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was classic.” — Lila “This list fails. Recovery is a better hip hop album than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Sure, Kanye’s got the better beats, but Eminem has the better lyrics, flow and overall delivery than Kanye. That’s what hip hop is really about, sure you need good production, but lyricism is more impressive.” — Ryan “This list is perfect. Eminem’s album wasn’t that good and mainstream people need to stop believing that sales equates to quality. Kanye West put out the best album this year, hands down. MTV isn’t the only one putting it at the top of the charts and if you didn’t buy it, that only reflects your own ignorance and lack of taste.” — Moze’s Mother “Great list, I’m surprised that is made by MTV. I do not understand why people think that if an album sold more must be better than others, music is not about sales or popularity, it is about quality.” — Juan17x “I just want to say that MTV did a great job with this Top 20. And it’s great the indie groups like The National, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Beach House etc were recognized. Music these days [is] infused with synths, autotunes, and other forms of manipulation. Sometimes it’s nice to just listen to the bare-bone basics of guitars, drums, vocals, and the occasional piano or other instrument. And Sufjan Stevens is great too! It was interesting to see Linkin Park’s album up there, but it might really be like Radiohead’s Kid A. Perhaps by listening to the tracks more often then it would be more easy to understand.” — A.Pearl “I haven’t heard of 70 percent of these clowns … No Rihanna? No Drake? No Diddy or Nicki Minaj? Surely James Montgomery must be living under some kind of rock … a huge one. Eminem at 14? (way too low). [The] only thing I can live with is Kanye at number 1. But it’s not worth ignoring these other artists!” — Tom “I’m happy that Kanye’s number 1 (the album’s super dope), but what about Cee Lo’s The Lady Killer, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager? ” — Mendy “Yeah! Vampire Weekend is in the top 5! YES! Grrreat, Contra is totally amazing. Amazing job you guys!” — Diana “ROBYN SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!” — Antoine “I cant believe Drake isn’t on this list.” — Kanye is the Best “[Deftones’] Diamond Eyes is definitely missing.” — Lumen “You forgot perhaps one of the biggest: 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War. … The single ‘Kings and Queens’ won [the] VMA [for] Best Rock Video as well as [the] EMA [for] Best Rock. Singles ‘Closer to the Edge,’ ‘This Is War,’ ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Kings and Queens’ have been in Billboard ‘s Top 10 Alternative and Rock categories as well as iTunes all over the world.” — Ana “Why isn’t How I Got Over by The Roots on this list? After all it is nominated for a Grammy. I also think that Eminem’s album was a lot better than Kanye West’s album. Distant Relatives by Nas & Damian Marley should also be on this list. I am a huge Linkin Park fan and I know their new album shouldn’t be on this list. Hands All Over by Maroon 5 should be somewhere on this list too.” — Facebook User “The editor of this article is a big fool and should be fired for putting up articles like this … No Drake, no Susan Boyle, no Taylor Swift, no Lady Gaga, no T.I. and these are the people making real good music that people can actually spend their money [on] and buy without regretting like I did [with] Kanye`s album. People actually think ‘Runaway’ is a great song just because of the lengthy video. That’s Dumb!” — Kenneth “Yo, Kenneth. Chill. We get it. You like music that sells well. You like ‘Glee’ soundtracks, Susan Boyle, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls records. That’s cool man … we happen to like music that appeals to us personally and possibly other intelligent, educated people with an ear for more progressive tastes. [It] just so happens, at the end of the year, journalists’ and critics’ lists are going to skew more towards our sensibilities than yours. Don’t worry though man, Susan Boyle is still going to sell 5 million records or whatever. The sun still rises in the morning.” — Yoprince Related Artists Kanye West Eminem Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Kim Kardashian Weighs In On Kanye West Baby Rumors, Music Project

‘[In] New York [I] put on like 10 pounds and then I’m pregnant with Kanye’s baby!’ reality star laughs. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kim Kardashian Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images Kim Kardashian had everyone talking when she was spotted hanging out with Kanye West in New York last month. Kardashian’s face time with the rap superstar was documented for the upcoming E! reality show “Kourtney and Kim Take New York,” and it also has generated a lot of rumors. Many gossip blogs began speculating that not only were Kim and Kanye dating, but that they also were expecting a little bundle of joy. The reality starlet laughed off the allegations when MTV News caught up with her at Z-100’s Jingleball in New York on Friday night. “My reaction is, ‘God, I’ve got to stay away from those hot dogs and nuts on the street corner and the ice cream!’ ” she explained. “Like those trucks, I’ve never seen that before — trucks of ice cream. You have to stop and eat! I couldn’t control myself, so [in] New York [I] put on like 10 pounds and then I’m pregnant with Kanye’s baby, so whatever! What can you do?! Hit the gym!” Of course, fans also are buzzing about the album that Kardashian is recording , and she teased that they will know more about it once her E! series kicks off this January. “It’s ‘Kourtney and Kim Take New York,’ so it’s a little bit different,” she said. “They might freak out about [my friendship with singer] Ciara — just all my girlfriends are on it so we have our girl time.” She added, “Ciara kind of talks me into doing something really crazy and unexpected. You’re going to have to wait and watch the show. It’s kind of in her world and not mine … I don’t know … I’m having fun — that’s all I’ll say, but you’ll definitely see it all unfold on the show.” Related Artists Kanye West

Vampire Weekend Draw Inspiration From Kate Hudson For New Album

Frontman Ezra Koenig says watching ‘Love Guru,’ ‘Bride Wars’ is helping band ‘think about the art’ they want to make. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend performs during KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas on Sunday Photo: Karl Walter/Getty Images In 2010, Vampire Weekend released a rather amazing album of pan-ethnic pop, debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart , showed up on the “Eclipse” soundtrack , hung out with Lil Jon, the RZA, a very drunk Jake Gyllenhaal and a Jonas Brother and even got sued by the unwitting star of their Contra album cover . Needless to say, it was a pretty hectic year, the kind most bands would follow with a rather lengthy (and well-deserved) break. But, as they told MTV News on Sunday at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas in Los Angeles, Vampire Weekend aren’t most bands: They’re already in the early stages of work on the follow-up to Contra. To be honest, though, they’ve been in those early stages for a while now. “We’re always thinking about the next album. … I would say we’ve been thinking about the next album since before we finished the last one. It’s natural. … I think that’s the way we work,” frontman Ezra Koenig said. “In terms of working on it, have the four of us gotten into the studio and started laying down tracks for it? Not in any formal way, but in some way that’s not even the most important part of the process. So the ball’s already rolling. When and how we start working on it — we definitely need a break — but the talking about ideas, that’s already happened, and there’s definitely stuff floating around.” And just where have VW been gathering inspiration for that “stuff”? Why, from the works of noted auteurs Mike Myers, that dude who plays Dwight on “The Office” and, uh, Kate Hudson, of course. “Collectively, we’ve been watching a lot of big-budget comedies that may or may not have been successful at the box office,” drummer Chris Tomson said with a smile. “Usually not successful,” Koenig added. ” ‘The Love Guru,’ a notorious financial failure, ‘The Rocker,’ [that] didn’t do too well at the box office, ‘Bride Wars,’ that was the exception. … Any time you interact with a piece of art — whether it’s something that goes on to be your favorite or something that maybe you find issue with — still, that’s going to help you think about the art you want to make.” Sounds, uh, interesting. Still, though they’re working on a new album, Koenig cautions that it’s going to be a while before fans actually hear it. After the year they’ve had, VW have sort of earned the right to take their time with things — not to mention the fact that they’re still waiting for “Date Night” to make it to the top of their Netflix queue. “Knowing us, it takes us a very long time to make an album,” Koenig said. “Is it possible that things from the Vampire Weekend family could come out in 2011? I’m sure, but a Vampire Weekend album … I don’t see any reason to rush it.” Related Photos KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas Related Artists Vampire Weekend

Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs Debuts At #1 On Billboard

Indie band tops Eminem and last week’s #1, Avenged Sevenfold. By James Montgomery The Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images It’s been an oddly major year for indie artists. Back in January, Vampire Weekend made history when their Contra album debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. And now, it’s the Arcade Fire ‘s turn to take the top spot … and they did it in an even bigger fashion than anyone could’ve imagined. Their The Suburbs album sold more than 156,000 copies — some 30,000 more than VW managed to move in their first week — to bow at #1 on next week’s Top 200. They’re the highest opening numbers for any indie album since Pearl Jam’s Backspacer (which was released on their own Monkey Wrench label but sold exclusively through mega-retailer Target, indie stores and online) sold 189,000 copies in September 2008, and bested debuts by the likes of the Shins, whose Wincing the Night Away sold 118,000 copies to debut at #2 in January 2007, and Radiohead , who signed to indie ATO Records to release the physical edition of their In Rainbows album in 2008, and sold 122,000 copies to bow at #1. The Suburbs is also the first #1 debut in the 20-year history of venerable Durham, North Carolina, indie Merge Records. They came close in 2007 when the Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible debuted at #2 (behind a Notorious B.I.G. greatest-hits album). It was such a big week for the band that their first album — 2004’s Funeral — reentered the chart at #175, with sales of more than 3,000 copies. Following behind the Arcade Fire is Eminem , who sold more than 152,000 copies of his massive Recovery album to land at #2. Em’s probably not sweating it though … Recovery will pass the 2 million mark in total sales this week. Last week’s chart champs Avenged Sevenfold fall to #3, as their Nightmare album sold more than 45,000 copies. Houston legend Bun B scored the week’s second-highest debut, as his Trill O.G. album sold nearly 41,000 copies to open at #4. Rick Ross ‘s Teflon Don is in at #5, with sales of 39,000 copies. Rounding out the top 10 is Lady Gaga ‘s brand-new Remix album, which sold more than 39,000 to land at #6; Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#7, more than 37,000 copies sold); Drake ‘s Thank Me Later (#8, more than 31,000 copies sold); Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#9, nearly 29,000 copies sold); and Buckcherry ‘s new All Night Long (#10, nearly 28,000). Outside the top 10 were debuts by Ryan Star (no, not that one ) at #31, Secondhand Serenade (#42) and Los Lobos (#47). Related Artists Arcade Fire

Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Warns Of The Cycle Of Abuse

Dating violence expert says clip’s ‘warning’ message is heightened by Eminem’s and Rihanna’s personal histories. By Rochell Thomas, with reporting by Adam Murphy Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage In Eminem’s controversial new video “Love the Way You Lie,” love and violence intertwine seamlessly. One moment, a couple sleeps in each other’s arms, the next, they’re violently fighting, tossing bed sheets. Later, they kiss passionately, pressed up against the same wall the man has just punctured with his fist. All the while, Rihanna croons the chorus which includes the line, “That’s all right because I like the way it hurts.” But is it really all right? Less than 24 hours after MTV debuted the video for Eminem’s chart-topping single about the evolution of his relationship with his ex-wife, Kim, many are wondering: Does “Love the Way You Lie” glamorize domestic violence?

B.o.B Kicks Off Lollapalooza: Watch Exclusive Footage Here!

MTV News follows rapper up onstage before he tears into his hits and closes with MGMT’s ‘Kids.’ By James Montgomery B.o.B performs at 2010 Lollapalooza Photo: MTV News CHICAGO — The speakers boomed the theme from “Star Wars” over the empty expanses of Grant Park, the gates opened, and the kids came on through. They were just a trickle at first, then a heavy flow, and finally a steady surge, sprinting and screaming, kicking clouds of dust up into the air. Lollapalooza 2010 was officially under way. And backstage at the Adidas Mega stage — which, conveniently enough, was adjacent to the river of kids — the first performer of the fest was getting ready. But this wasn’t your ordinary curtain jerker; this was B.o.B , possessor of two massive hit singles, a #1 album and five Video Music Awards nominations . So obviously, the kids made a beeline for the stage, set up shop on the guard rail and got ready to get wild. About this time, B.o.B was exiting his tour bus and making the long walk to the stage. Flanked by his posse, and followed by a crew of cameras, he strutted and laughed — until he got to the gangplank that ramped directly up to the sea of kids. Then the cameras shut off, his posse clammed up, and B.o.B got serious. As luck would have it, he allowed our crew to follow him up. As his name was announced, he ducked behind the stage, crouched, bobbed his head and prepared himself, like a prize fighter getting ready to go 12 rounds. Then, he hit the stage. The kids cheered, his cracking live band laid into the groove, and his double-jointed go-go dancers did their stuff. It was red-hot. He played the hits — leading the audience in sing-alongs of “Nothin’ on You” and “Airplanes” — worked snippets of Vampire Weekend into his tunes and closed with a fabulously funky cover of MGMT’s “Kids.” And then, as the kids screamed their approval, he threw down his mic and disappeared backstage once again. It was a pretty excellent way to kick off a festival. And a weekend. Lollapalooza 2010 gets under way Friday — make sure to check out MTV News’ Lollapalooza Live , streaming Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m., right here on MTV.com. Charice’s Rep Denies The Singer Got Botox For Cosmetic Reasons

Botox was used ‘to relieve a jaw problem,’ spokesperson tells Us Weekly. By Mawuse Ziegbe Charice Pempengco Photo: Jemal Countess/ WireImage Teen singer Charice Pempengco is set to make her debut on the upcoming season of “Glee,” and according to some reports, the star is going to great lengths for a fresh-faced look. The Associated Press reports that the singer revealed in a TV interview that she received Botox injections and an anti-aging procedure “to look fresh on camera.” Cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo told ABS-CBN television that the Botox was supposed to narrow out her “naturally round face” and divulged that she also received a Thermage skin-tightening procedure. According to the AP, the Filipino singer explored cosmetic options because of the intense pressure surrounding her “Glee” debut. “All people will be anticipating how will Charice look? Is she good enough to pit against [Lea Michele’s ‘Glee’ character] Rachel Berry? So of course there is tremendous pressure,” the singer said. However, a rep for the 18-year-old star denies that Charice went to such great lengths for her “Glee” debut. The singer’s spokesperson told Us Weekly that the Botox was not for cosmetic use but rather “to relieve a jaw problem similar to TMJ.” The star’s rep maintained: “It did not hurt; it relieved the pain.” “You’ve seen her face — she doesn’t have a wrinkle in it, so she wouldn’t need it for cosmetic purposes,” the rep continued, adding that the teen singer had already won over the show’s producers with her look. “The ‘Glee’ people are thrilled with the way she looks, which is why she got the part.” Charice’s rep conceded that the star did go back to her original hair color but said “other than that, she’s not changing anything about the way she looks.” Charice got her start belting out songs at local competitions and shot to fame after scoring co-signs from talk-show queens Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres. The singer will star as an exchange student on the hit musical show. Are you looking forward to Charice’s appearance on “Glee”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Charice Pempengco

Vampire Weekend ‘Look Forward’ To Resolving Contra Lawsuit, Label Says

Frontman Ezra Koenig calls album-cover suit ‘a little frustrating.’ By James Montgomery Kirsten Kennis featured on the Vampire Weekend’s album “Contra” Photo: XL Recordings Last week, Ann Kirsten Kennis — the cover star of Vampire Weekend’s Contra album — filed suit against the band in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging that her signature was forged on photographer Tod Brody’s photographic release. At the time, VW’s label, XL Recordings, told MTV News they had “no comment” on Kennis’ lawsuit, and the only comment from the band itself was a winking emoticon tweeted by frontman Ezra Koenig. Since then, things have changed. First, Entertainment Weekly spoke to Kennis’ attorney and Brody, who, somewhat understandably, had differing opinions about the suit. Alan Neigher, who is representing Kennis, said his client was unaware that a Polaroid of her was being used by the band until her daughter told her, adding that the picture was “taken by her family” in 1983 and Kennis “has no idea how that photograph got into the photographer’s hands.” Brody — the photographer — laughed when he heard Neigher’s claims, maintaining that not only did he take the photo, but that it “was in my possession the entire time, for 26 years, until it was delivered to Vampire Weekend.” And late Friday, reps for XL sent a statement about the lawsuit to MTV News, saying they did their due diligence when securing the rights to the photo and that they “look forward” to proving that claim in court. “As is standard practice, Vampire Weekend and XL Recordings licensed the rights to use the photo on the cover of Contra pursuant to a license agreement that contains representations and warranties authorizing this use of the photo,” the statement read. “Now that a lawsuit has been filed, we look forward to having the matter resolved in Court. We will be filing our response after we have had an opportunity to review the allegations. Consistent with our practice, we will not be commenting further about the pending litigation at this time.” And finally, during a talk with British mag NME at this past weekend’s Latitude festival, Koenig broke his silence, saying he and his bandmates found the entire experience — and the inability to speak openly about it — “a little frustrating” “I think I can speak for all of us and say this is the first time any of us have ever been sued, so we’re still learning how it works,” he said “There’s so many things we could say about it, but given we have no experience of it, we’re just keeping conversations to a journal for now, which is a little frustrating. “There’s nothing we can say about it,” he continued. “We’re not trying to be mysterious. I imagine in the next few months, there’ll be plenty to talk about. Given it’s our first time, we just want to do it properly.” What do you think about the suit against Vampire Weekend?
