Jake Gyllenhaal Channels John McEnroe For Vampire Weekend Video

‘I basically changed into a tennis outfit, and I got down,’ he tells MTV News of ‘Giving Up the Gun’ cameo. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Jake Gyllenhaal Photo: MTV News Vampire Weekend’s “Giving Up the Gun” video is a smorgasbord of thoroughly WTF cameos — everyone from Joe Jonas to Lil Jon shows up at one point or another — but perhaps no guest star is as perplexing as Jake Gyllenhaal. After all, with a relatively huge summer movie to promote (the swords-n-sandals epic “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” ), you’d think he’d have better things to do with his time. Turns out, nothing could be further from the truth. “That was just amazing, because I love that band, and I love their first album, and I had recently just got their second album,” Gyllenhaal told MTV News. “I got a call from the directors, who are friends of mine … and they were like, ‘We’re doing this thing, and we heard you’re a big fan of the band. We didn’t know if you wanted to come down.’ I was actually in San Francisco, and they were shooting it in Los Angeles, and they were like, ‘We’re shooting it this evening,’ so I said, ‘All right, I’m there.’ So I drove down from San Francisco to this soundstage in downtown L.A., and I basically changed into a tennis outfit, and I got down.” In the clip, Gyllenhaal plays a hard-swinging, even harder-boozing tennis pro, a role that, surprisingly, wasn’t that much of a stretch for the Oscar-nominated actor. “Well, that’s the only way anyone’s going to beat me, if I’m that wasted,” he joked. “They call me, like, the John McEnroe of action films.” And though, yes, he does have a film to promote, Gyllenhaal said he’d drop everything if the guys from Vampire Weekend came calling again. Just as long as “Gun” co-stars Jonas, Jon and the RZA are involved. After all, he’s old pals with all of them. “It was really fun. I met the band and hung out with them. They’re all really cool guys … and the Jonas Brothers, the RZA and Lil Jon, we all usually chill anyway,” he laughed. “Actually, we were up in San Francisco, and I was like, ‘You guys, do you want to come down with me?’ And Lil Jon was like, ‘I’m busy,’ and I was like, ‘Come on, man, get in the car!’ So we all chilled out, listened to the whole album, and the RZA was dope. He was great. He sat shotgun, because that’s where he likes to sit usually. … We all hang out because we’re all really good friends.” What did you think of the cameos in the Vampire Weekend video? ‘Eclipse’ Soundtrack Includes Vampire Weekend, Beck, Dead Weather

Metric, Florence and the Machines, Black Keys, the Bravery also announced in slowly revealed lineup. By James Montgomery Vampire Weekend Photo: Francois Guillot/ AFP/ Getty Images We already knew Muse were onboard for the much-hyped “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack, but on Wednesday (May 12), we learned who else would be joining them … albeit very slowly. Yes, the folks over at MySpace Music — perhaps taking a page out of the Bonnaroo playbook — decided to reveal the names of each artist (and song) on the album individually, with a new name being unveiled every 30 minutes. And given that there are 15 spots to be revealed, well, we hope you’re not doing anything for the next seven-and-a-half hours. Anyway, at the time of this writing, seven acts and songs have been revealed, a list that includes Vampire Weekend (who contribute a song called “Jonathan Low”), Beck (who duets with Bat for Lashes on “Let’s Get Lost” — no word from Atlantic Records on whether it’s a cover of the Elliott Smith song or of the old jazz standard), the Bravery (“Ours”), the Dead Weather (“Rolling in on a Burning Tree”) and Metric, who nabbed the album’s opening spot with a track called “Eclipse (All Yours).” Other confirmed artists and songs are Florence and the Machine (“Heavy in Your Arms”), Akron hammers the Black Keys (“Chop and Change”) and London-based pop act Fanfarlo (“Atlas”). The first single off the “Eclipse” soundtrack is Muse’s rather excellently titled “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever),” which was revealed on “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s official site last week. The single will head to radio on May 17. As previously reported, the “Eclipse” soundtrack is due in stores on June 8 , which is probably right around the time MySpace will be finished revealing the last of the artists that will appear on it. What do you think of the “Eclipse” lineup so far? Is it missing anyone you were hoping for? Sound off in the comments. Miike Snow Count Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, Perez Hilton And More As Fans

‘I’m pretty overwhelmed,’ bandmember Pontus Winnberg says of the group’s success. By Joel Hanek Miike Snow Photo: Downtown Records While not yet a household name, Miike Snow is the band that the household names are listening to. Having only released one album thus far, last summer’s self-titled debut, Miike Snow has quickly gained a following among the blogosphere and established acts alike. Along with inescapable pop sensation Ke$ha , “American Idol” breakout star Adam Lambert named the trio’s debut as one of his favorite albums of 2009, even if he had a little trouble pronouncing the name. He raved to MTV News , “That album is unbelievable!” Blogger Perez Hilton also told MTV News that Miike Snow was one of his favorite acts at this years’ South by Southwest festival , and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” director Edgar Wright said the group’s uptempo dance track “Animal” was one of his favorites of ’09 . Although the band is relatively new in music years, the members are not amateurs. Miike Snow, an “indie electro-pop trio,” are comprised of American writer/producer Andrew Wyatt along with the Swedish writing/producing team of Chris Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg. The Swedish duo, also known as Bloodshy & Avant, have written for major acts like Madonna and Britney Spears — and won a Grammy for penning Spears’ 2004 infectious hit “Toxic.” Winnberg explained why the Swedes were so good at writing music. “[Sweden is] cold and grim and the only thing you can do is rehearse with your band and write songs and be depressed,” he said. The group formed in 2007 when Wyatt met up with Karlsson and Winnberg. “I was in Sweden because I was touring with another band, stopped off and did some stuff with [Andrew and Chris], just for fun,” Wyatt explained. Even though the three members are mainly experienced behind the control board, they describe the songwriting process as very natural. “It’s very organic,” Winnberg offered. “We like to be in the same place at the same time, so it’s just like us three f—ing around in the studio and whatever happens, happens.” The group has been touring in support of their debut album since last May to a string of sold-out club shows around the country — even making a stop at the Coachella festival along the way. “Yeah, I’m pretty overwhelmed,” Winnberg said of the fans’ response. “I mean, the first time you saw people singing along with the lyrics it was a very cool experience.” “Amazing, and in some ways surprising for us because it’s a new thing for us to be touring,” Karlsson added. Not only does the band have a cavalcade of celebrity followers but, thanks to their production experience, Miike Snow have gotten involved with the best in the world of remixes and remixing. DJ heavyweights like Mark Ronson, Crookers and Fake Blood have remixed “Animal,” and the band themselves have done re-workings of songs by indie darlings Vampire Weekend and Passion Pit. “I guess you kind of take away everything from a production standpoint that is kind of boring — it’s just the fun parts,” Winnberg explained about remixing. “You don’t have to record the vocals, you can more or less just do what you want.” Miike Snow plan to continue touring throughout the summer and hope to record the follow-up to their much buzzed-about debut by the end of the year.
