Indie-rock band bests heavyweights like Lady Gaga and Eminem in the show’s final category. By Ryan J. Downey Arcade Fire win Album of the Year at 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images Who says the Grammys reward nothing but pop music? Critical darlings Arcade Fire nabbed the top prize for Album of the Year at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night. The Canadian indie rock group’s The Suburbs bested major label albums from megastars Eminem, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, whose media campaigns were as relentless as their radio hits were ubiquitous. The category was rounded out by Lady Antebellum , huge stars in the world of country and multiple Grammy nominees in their own right. Check out photos of Arcade Fire’s performance and more! Arcade Fire’s Album of the Year win was something of an upset, although MTV News’ own James Montgomery did sort of call it for them. The band’s Grammy heat was part of a wave that showed how much traction indie releases have gained with Grammy voters in recent years. The Suburbs was released by Merge Records, the independent label based in Durham, North Carolina, that has been home to underground acts like Lou Barlow, The Clientele, Superchunk and Neutral Milk Hotel. In addition to performing, Arcade Fire were up for three Grammys this year. On Sunday night in Los Angeles, groups like Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses and Broken Bells all joined Arcade Fire in battle with more mainstream nominees like Justin Bieber and Eminem. The Suburbs has sold roughly 400,000 copies, making it a smash for an indie label, particularly in the age of downloading. Arcade Fire’s Funeral (2005) and Neon Bible (2008) were both nominated for Best Alternative Music Album. The Montreal, Canada-based multi-instrumental band is led by husband-and-wife team Win Butler and R

SNL: Dana Carvey as well as Pals Come to Rescue, and Justin Bieber (Hmmmm)…

Dana Carvey (a wish to see) brought a demure as well as kind of icy Mike Myers with him, plus Jon Lovitz , to try as well as save “Saturday Night Live” from its torpor. I’m not sure it worked, or anything can. this deteriorate has been a disaster, as well as it only gets worse as well as worse. the the single more expel members, whose names no the single knows or cares about, have been only terrible. the “vets”– Andy Samberg, Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Kristin Wiig, Kenan Thompson –are over it, as they say. the mount out sequence, toward the end, was the “Regis” parody–dead on, essentially as well as really funny. “Wayne’s World” returned with Carvey as well as Myers, who riffed upon the pretension of “Winter’s Bone” for the Oscars. Oy. the best impulse in the total uncover comes at 1:31 upon your DVR, at the really end, when Myers folds him arms as well as stands way to the left of the screen. Jon Lovitz tries in vain to rivet him. Myers mouths “how have been you?” then backs away. then the single of the latest expel members tries to verbalise to him, as well as Myers signals which he can’t speak, as if he has laryngitis. Two more things about SNL: Justin Bieber , not as big than Dana Carvey’s teenager sons, as well as wearing girl’s red sleet boots with in. tall platforms. He did not sing upon the show. even in his “Church Lady” stage with Carvey, he didn’t even hum. we regularly say, singers want to sing. look at Steven Tyler upon “American Idol.” He’s ready to break out in to strain at any moment. ( Jennifer Lopez is not.) we goal Bieber’s film makes him a lot of money, as well as which he manages to save as well as deposit it. the time is ticking. And the James Franco bit upon “Weekend Update” was essentially flattering funny. “I similar to having jobs!” the man says, as he handles the evidence cards as well as cleans the desk. Whoever played Franco got it. PS Linkin Park : good timing, 6 months after their manuscript came out. Will Madonna Tour With Cast Of ‘Glee’?

Material Girl’s rep shoots down rumors she’ll hit the road with cast of the Fox hit show. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: PictureGroup/ Evan Agostini Last year, “Glee” aired a Madonna -centric episode featuring the mega-star’s music, but does that mean that Madge is ready to hit the road with the cast of the hit Fox show? According to some rumors, the answer is yes. The News of the World reported that Madge was eyeing Lea Michele, Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison as prospective tourmates, according to Metro.co.uk. “Madonna wants to break records and make her career bigger than ever,” the source said. “And because the ‘Glee’ episode featuring her music was such a hit, there are plans for the cast to appear.” The insider continued that the rumored tour is meant to represent Madonna ushering in the next era of her career, which she plans to spend behind the scenes. “She is in amazing shape for her age,” the source said. “But this could be her last big world tour she does for a while as she wants to concentrate on business ventures.” The problem is that none of this is real, according to a rep for the singer who told MTV News that the rumors are not true. Last April, “Glee” paid homage to the Material Girl in their “Power of Madonna” episode. And the episode, which covered such Madonna classics as “Ray of Light,” “Express Yourself,” “Vogue,” “Like a Virgin” and “Like a Prayer,” to name a few, got the thumbs up from the star. “I think Mr. Schuester is very cute,” Madonna said in a statement, referring to Matthew Morrison, who plays the glee-club instructor on the hit Fox show. “And I’m glad he’s doing such a good job empowering all the girls.” Related Artists Madonna

‘Superman’ Star Henry Cavill Had Long Road To Landing The Role

Actor has been linked to Superman reboots since 2002. By Eric Ditzian Henry Cavill Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images It took Henry Cavill far longer than expected to complete his journey from Krypton to Earth. Years after the British actor first circled the role of Superman, he finally landed the part of the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s reboot of the storied comic franchise. It was, indeed, a circuitous path for Cavill, involving brushes with other heroes and the planet’s most swoon-worthy vampire. He’s been this close to becoming a breakout Hollywood star a staggering number of times, but until now he was unable to seal the deal. Now his life is about to change in a big way. As we applaud Cavill for winning the part, let’s take a look back at the ups and downs he endured before signing on to play the world’s most iconic man in tights. 2002 : Though he was mostly known as a stage actor, Cavill’s name cropped up in “Superman” conversations following director Brett Ratner’s stated desire to cast an unknown in the title role of his in-the-works reboot. Ratner also had a strong interest in future “White Collar” star Matthew Bomer , but the studio pushed him in the direction of established talent like Jude Law and Josh Hartnett. It didn’t matter, though: Ratner left the project early the next year. 2003 : McG came aboard to replace Ratner and began to search, like Ratner, for an unknown actor to play Superman. Cavill actually ended up landing the role. “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” he explained to MTV News in 2009. But McG’s version of the film never came to pass and Cavill once again missed out on the opportunity to play the Man of Steel. That same year, following rumors that Cavill was being considered for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s reboot, Christian Bale won the role of the Caped Crusader. 2004 : After McG’s departure from “Superman,” Bryan Singer hopped into the director’s chair and targeted an unknown actor. But the actor wasn’t Cavill. Instead, Brandon Routh won the lead role. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained in ’09. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” 2005 : Cavill wouldn’t have been faulted for avoiding any contact with iconic film characters, but he kept pushing. In ’05, he screen-tested for the role of James Bond in “Casino Royale.” But the part went instead to Daniel Craig, and Cavill, perhaps, was left with his confidence shaken, not stirred. 2007 : By this point, Cavill had mostly appeared in low-profile films like the direct-to-video “Hellraiser: Hellworld” and in supporting roles in higher-profile fare like “Tristan & Isolde.” But the guy got a break when he was cast in the Showtime series “The Tudors,” opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The series enjoyed a successful run, lasting four seasons and earning a Golden Globe nomination in 2007 for best drama. Cavill had also reportedly been “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s top pick to play Edward Cullen, but at the end of ’07, the role went to Robert Pattinson. A few years later, we asked Cavill how close he had actually come to playing the vampire. “I’ve heard this, but I haven’t heard from Stephenie,” Cavill told us . “I haven’t spoken to her personally, and I haven’t spoken to the producers.” 2009 : Rumor has it that Cavill was competing for the role of Hal Jordan in the long-gestating big-screen adaptation of “Green Lantern.” And — surprise, surprise — after losing out on Batman and Superman, Cavill failed to land the role. Instead, Ryan Reynolds signed on to play Jordan . 2011 : At long, long last, the guy who missed out on playing some of pop culture’s best known characters officially signs on to play Superman . “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Eminem, Taylor Swift Top Album Sales For 2010

Recovery led the year’s new releases; Katy Perry was queen of song downloads. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Despite late charges from Susan Boyle and Taylor Swift, Eminem came out on top in the year-end Nielsen SoundScan tally. According to figures compiled by Billboard magazine, the rapper’s return-to-form CD, Recovery, led all new releases in 2010 with sales of 3.4 million copies, followed by Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now (3.1 million), Swift’s Speak Now (3 million), Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 (2.3 million) and Boyle’s The Gift (1.85 million). The rest of the top-selling albums including Lady Gaga’s still-moving debut, The Fame , which sold another 1.5 million copies last year, followed by Sade’s Soldier of Love (1.3 million), Drake’s Thank Me Later (1.2 million), Usher’s Raymond v. Raymond (1.18 million) and Ke$ha’s Animal (1.1 million). Recovery was also the #1 digital album, thanks to sales of 852,000 copies. A combination of her still briskly selling back catalog and her new hit album made Swift the year’s overall top-selling artist, with more than 4.4 million units shifted, followed by Slim Shady (4.3 million), Lady Antebellum (3.8 million), Bieber (3.7 million) and the cast of “Glee” (3.6 million). Katy Perry was the queen of the digital songs tally, racking up nearly 4.4 million downloads for her hit collabo with Snoop Dogg, “California Gurls.” Just behind was Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” (4.3 million), Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” (4.2 million), Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” (4 million) and B.o.B and Hayley Williams’ “Airplanes” (4 million). Albums sales continued their nearly decade-long slide, dropping another 12.8 percent to 326.2 million units as sales of CDs fell by almost 20 percent for the fourth year in a row. But individual digital track sales saw a slight 1 percent increase last year to 1.17 billion, and digital album sales grew by 13 percent to 86.3 million, meaning they accounted for more than 26 percent of all U.S. album sales in 2010. And, in one of those stories it feels like you hear every year, vinyl was big in 2010 as well, with the vintage category growing by 13 percent. That uptick was fueled largely by the Beatles’ Abbey Road, which sold 35,000 copies, followed by the Arcade Fire’s Suburbs (18,000), the Black Keys’ Brothers (18,000), Vampire Weekend’s Contra (15,000) and Michael Jackson’s Thriller (14,000).
