‘Buffy’ Creator Joss Whedon Reacts To ‘Sad’ Reboot Plans

‘I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands,’ the writer/director laments in a message to E! Online. By Eric Ditzian Joss Whedon Photo: Dave Hogan/Getty Images Buffy Summers will rise again. Just don’t expect her creator to be very excited about the prospect. Joss Whedon, who penned 1992’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and then adapted the movie into the beloved and long-running WB series, has spoken out after Warner Bros. announced plans to reboot the property for the big screen. Characteristically resigned, self-aware and condescending all at once, Whedon spoke about his reluctance to see his characters taken over by others, even as he acknowledged doing the same thing himself. “This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my ‘Avengers’ idea that I made up myself,” he wrote in a statement to E! Online . Whedon is currently shepherding an adaptation of “The Avengers,” Marvel’s superhero all-star franchise, toward a theatrical release. While he realizes such pop culture appropriation is commonplace, he still bristles at the idea that it’s happening to his work. “I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death,” he said. “But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill.” This isn’t the first time Whedon has released a statement mixing humor and pathos after a newsworthy development involving his work. After Fox canceled “Dollhouse” last year, he announced , “I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.” Let the disappointment begin anew. Before signing off from his latest message “Leave me to my pain,” Whedon jokingly wondered if vampires are even popular anymore and promised he’ll soon be shooting a new “Batman” flick. “Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating,” he wrote. “So look for ‘The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto,’ rebooting into a theater near you.” How do you feel about a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot? Tell us in the comments.

Tim Burton Has A Big 2010 Thanks To ‘Alice In Wonderland,’ MOMA Exhibit

And that’s why the veteran director is one of the entertainers we’re most thankful for this year. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tim Burton Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In Hollywood, the land of superlatives and flagrant puffery, the term “visionary” is thrown about too casually and bestowed upon flash-in-the-pan acts that all too often come and go with the change of seasons. However, one artist for whom the descriptor is fitting, whose films truly transport audiences to other dimensions and offer a childlike sense of wonder, is director Tim Burton. And this year, thanks to “Alice in Wonderland,” which brought in an estimated $1 billion at the box office ($334 million domestic, $690 million international) in addition to 20-plus years of unique and exciting filmmaking, Burton is one of the folks in the entertainment world for whom we’re most thankful. As part of MTV’s Thankful Week, we had the pleasure of chatting with Burton about the stress and eventual success of “Alice,” if we’ll be seeing a sequel or a musical adaptation on the Great White Way and a few hints about upcoming projects. MTV : Tim, every year here at MTV News, we select a few people we’re most thankful for. And you’ve had quite a year with the phenomenal success of “Alice in Wonderland” and a retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art . Tim Burton : Wow. Well, that’s quite an honor. Thank you. MTV : Did it feel like this year was a special one? Burton : Yeah, it was interesting. The MOMA show was very special, and then going to the Cannes film festival and “Alice” — it was a lot of stuff going on. It was a special year for me, definitely. MTV : Were you a little more reflective than usual with the MOMA show? Burton : Yeah, I think so. It kind of forced me to look at myself, which I don’t do very often. I even avoid mirrors as I walk by them. It was a bit of a surprise in a good way. It did make me more reflective. You know, as you go on in life, there are less and less surprises — especially nice surprises, so it’s really, really great to feel surprised in a good way. MTV : We spoke a few times when you were working on “Alice,” and frankly, you seemed stressed. Burton : I was really stressed. We were doing music to no images. It was terrifying. In a weird way, it was quite exciting too, because you never know with a film what it’s going to turn out to be. But this was just an extreme, extreme version of that. MTV : How did you feel about the 3-D debate that came with the film? Some criticized the conversion to 3-D you used. Burton : Right, yeah, but that was kind of a funny argument because the thing is, we’ll shoot what? It’s not like we were doing motion-capture or we had sets. There was nothing to shoot. We planned for it. It was kind of a created argument in a way. Everybody likes to have a celebrity death match. Who will win? Things have more shades to it than that. MTV : Right, because a lot of it became about you and James Cameron’s different approaches to 3-D. Burton : Yeah. They’re doing “Titanic” in 3-D . What, they’re going to go back and shoot it in 3-D? No. They’re going to do the same thing we did. MTV : Is Disney putting the pressure on for a sequel for “Alice”? Burton : No, they haven’t, which was smart of them. They saw that it was kind of its own thing. They didn’t push for it at all, which I thought was really amazing, and smart, and right. MTV : And you are content to leave the story where it is? Because you do leave an opening at the end … Burton : Yeah, but that’s what the material does to me, it leaves it open for you. It’s kind of like dreams. It leaves it open, as it should, for interpretation. It’s like I got a lot of pressure to do a sequel to “Nightmare [Before Christmas],” and I just didn’t want to do that, because some movies should just be left alone. I think it keeps their kind of spirit intact in a way. MTV : There’s been talk about adapting “Alice” into a Broadway show. Are you involved in that? Burton : I’m talking to them about that just because there was a seedling of an idea that I thought was interesting. I don’t know how far it will go, but it’s something. I’ve always kind of wanted to do something live onstage. I’m just going to explore it and see what happens. MTV : It sounds like you’ll be shooting “Dark Shadows” with Johnny Depp soon? Burton : Yeah, I’m working on the script, and, you know, it’s been kind of a long time coming, but I think I’m getting a script that I like. I don’t really like talking, because I’m not really sure what’s happening yet, but I’m excited about it. I think, yes, finally for me, it’s getting to be the right tone. MTV : Have you and Johnny talked specifically about his take on Barnabas Collins, the vampire at the center of the series? Burton : Yeah, we’ve been talking about it. I mean, he’s finishing up another movie, but we’ve had a couple of really good meetings. Yeah, you know, I’m excited. MTV : Have you started shooting “Frankenweenie” ? Burton : We just started a couple of shots. It ‘s good. We’ve got a pretty low budget, but I’m excited about it. We’ve got a couple of shots that are done. Yeah, it’s just starting. It’s great. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Muse Insist They’re ‘Happy’ With ‘Twilight’ Fanbase

‘Loads of young fans come to our gigs now who say, ‘We heard that song from that film,’ ‘ frontman Matt Bellamy tells MTV News. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Tim Kash Muse Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Muse’s victory in the Favorite Alternative Rock Artist category at Sunday night’s 2010 American Music Awards felt like the crown jewel in what has been a pretty incredible few years for the band. Their latest album, 2009’s The Resistance, has sold millions of copies around the world, scored them a handful of hit singles, allowed them to sell out concerts on four different continents and perform at a number of high-profile television events. A bulk of that success is because of Muse’s participation on the soundtracks of “The Twilight Saga” movies (Muse are “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s favorite band). Their “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever),” for one, was the lead single from the soundtrack to last summer’s “Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” But in an interview with BBC’s Radio 1 back in July, Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme expressed some trepidation about the band’s involvement. “I’m not sure how cool it is to be on those kind of things, but sometimes you’ve just got to get your music out there in different ways,” he said. “You have to take every opportunity you get, and sometimes you have to sell your soul.” When asked on Sunday about their “Twilight” stance, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy clarified the group’s position. “Loads of young fans come to our gigs now who say, ‘We heard that song from that film,’ ” he told MTV News’ Tim Kash after the AMAs. “And that’s great. We’re happy with that.” Bellamy also said that he’s fine with the vampire flicks. “The first one was pretty good,” he told Kash. “The second one I only saw a bit of it. A guy kept taking his shirt off and showing his muscles, which was getting a little cheesy. The third one was pretty good.” Muse later told Kash that they’ll remain on tour for the time being — they have dates in Australia coming up — and will then take the bulk of 2011 off for a little rest and recovery from the whirlwind that hasn’t stopped since they dropped The Resistance. But they hope to be working on new music by the end of the year for release some time in 2012. Of 2010, Bellamy said, “It’s been one of the best years for the band.” What do you think of Muse’s take on “Twilight”? Sound off in the comments! Related Artists Muse

James Franco Is ‘Fascinated’ By ‘Twilight’

‘The go-to guys, Taylor and Rob, are in the tent [and] it’s almost like a ‘Brokeback Mountain’ scene,’ he tells MTV News of ‘Eclipse.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz James Franco Photo: MTV News James Franco is becoming not only an actor-of-all-trades, what with his stints in dramas, comedies and soap operas, but also a bit of a Renaissance man, having gone back to school for a master’s degree, filming a documentary, etc. So it should come as no surprise that he has some very insightful thoughts on the phenomenon that is “Twilight.” When we caught up with Franco at the Toronto International Film Festival recently, where he was alongside director Danny Boyle promoting their buzzy “127 Hours,” we asked him his thoughts on the series. “I haven’t read the last one! I kind of know what happens … some very strange birth, right?” he asked rhetorically about Stephenie Meyer’s fourth book in the series, “Breaking Dawn.” “I read a part of it. I think I got to the sex scene, but it was so brief, I didn’t even know if it was the actual sex scene,” he admitted. “It was kind of a letdown after all that buildup.” But did he enjoy the three novels he has read? “I wouldn’t say I enjoy them, but I’m fascinated with them. I’m interested in the metaphor of the vampire placed in the high school setting and how a relationship with a vampire can stand in for general feelings that people have as teenagers,” he said. “And the obsession people have with that is also fascinating to me.” Franco also revealed that he has seen the three “Twilight” movies, enough to call out series superstars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner by first names and cite the infamous “tent scene” in the process. “The movies are interesting also because they’ve really become part of the whole ‘Twilight’ phenomenon, and it’s really hard to extricate those actors from the reading experience or just the phenomenon of ‘Twilight’ now. They’ve become a part of it to the point that the movies are almost commenting on themselves,” Franco said. “There will be a scene where the go-to guys, Taylor and Rob, are in the tent, it’s almost like a ‘Brokeback Mountain’ scene, where the two guys are talking in a tent and the girl is asleep, and they’re having, like, this romantic moment almost through her, in a way. One of them says, ‘Well, I’m hotter than you,’ and it’s almost like they’re winking at the fans, like to the Team Jacob or the Team Edwards.” Perhaps we should enlist Mr. Franco for further “Twilight” analysis … What do you think of Franco’s “Twilight” enthusiasm?
