Supreme Court Nominee Elena Kagan Dodges ‘Twilight’ Debate

Senator asks solicitor general about ‘famous case of Edward vs. Jacob’ during confirmation hearing. By Gil Kaufman U.S. Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan at her Senate Hearing on Thursday Photo: Brendan Smialowski/Getty Images She faced tough questions on abortion, banning military recruiters from campus and a host of other constitutional issues during her two days in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. And, like most recent Supreme Court nominees, Solicitor General Elena Kagan declined to offer her opinions on issues that might come up before the court should she be confirmed for a spot on the nation’s top bench. She swatted away tough questions from a number of Republican inquisitors with a smile and good humor. But when it came to the most crucial issue of our time, the question that has vexed so many (OK, not a single one) previous Supreme Court nominees — is she Team Jacob or Team Edward? — Kagan refused to bend. Kagan professed she was not really aware of the “Twilight” phenomenon when asked a question about which team she was on by Minnesota Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar. “Solicitor General Kagan, you had an incredibly grueling day yesterday and did incredibly well,” Klobuchar said. “But I guess it means you missed the midnight debut of the third ‘Twilight’ movie last night. We did not miss it in our household, and it culminated in three 15-year-old girls sleeping over at three a.m.” “I didn’t see that,” Kagan laughed. “I just had a feeling. I keep wanting to ask you about the famous case of Edward vs. Jacob or the vampire vs. the werewolf,” Klobuchar said on Wednesday. With a smile, Kagan said, “I wish you wouldn’t.” And so, as with Lady Gaga , we may never know which side Kagan lands on in the vampires vs. werewolves debate, but at least we know she got asked the tough questions. What team do you think Solicitor General Kagan is on? Should it make a difference in her confirmation to the Supreme Court? Let us know by leaving a comment below. ‘Eclipse’ Fans Love Movie’s Tent Scene, Faster Pace

Twilighters at the movie’s midnight screening call this the best of the three ‘Twilight’ movies. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Lacsina Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit We’re not sure if you’ve heard, but “Eclipse” is out now. Fans all across the U.S.A were already lining up for midnight screenings on Tuesday night to be some of the first to catch the third film in the “Twilight Saga.” MTV News caught up with New York City Twi-hards before the show , and we were also on hand to talk to Los Angeles fans as they streamed out of the theater. The consensus among the West Coast Twilighters we spoke to is that David Slade’s take on the vampire tale rocked. “Best movie! It was actually the whole tent scene. Love the tent scene; it was a battle between Edward and Jacob. It was amazing! I loved it,” Elisse Mendez raved to MTV News. “I would actually have to say this is one of the top films that has come out so far. ‘Twilight’ was good. ‘New Moon’ was good, but I think this was better. Jacob — this time around he was such an amazing actor.” Patrick Seitz said he had been hoping Slade would bring his prior vampire expertise to the film, and he wasn’t disappointed. “I actually surprisingly liked it. I think this is the best of the bunch. I did [like the end], although I feel bad for Jacob because every time he does stuff, I know what’s coming,” he said. “I like the love triangle. I like the tension. I thought it was a good ending.” Morgan Jones admitted that the end made her cry. Her pal Heather Jones added, “Loved it. This one’s so much better! I wish I could watch it again right now. The acting was better, the writing was better. There weren’t so many long pauses. It was like it moved. It was an action film.” Fans named the long awaited tent scene and the film’s conclusion as highlights. “The ending of the movie was really great,” Carissa Odenberg said. “I want to see ‘Breaking Dawn.’ It makes you want to see the next one.” Her friend Anthony Ortiz continued, “It had a lot of action. Best movie so far of the ‘Twilight Saga.’ I like the details. All the detail was good. I really enjoyed it.” “It was awesome,” Cary Lockwood said. “It was better than I thought it was going to be.” Angie Llorena added, “It was better than the first two combined. It got my adrenaline pumping. It was very cool, exciting.” Did you see “Eclipse” yet? Share your reviews in the comments! ‘Eclipse’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

If you’re not already in line to see the latest ‘Twilight Saga’ installment, check out these fun facts! By Eric Ditzian Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Entertainment It’s been 222 days since the November 20 release of “New Moon.” Over 5,300 hours. Some 319,000 minutes. Not that you’ve been counting or anything. Now here comes “Eclipse” on Wednesday (June 30) to sate your vampire thirst. What’s happened in the time since the “Twilight” franchise has been absent from the multiplex? That’s a question we’re here to answer with a jam-packed edition of MTV News’ cheat sheet. We’ve pulled together almost everything — every interview, video clip, photo and news update — that we have to offer on this third installment in the series. Read on, and trust us when we say that, afterward, you’ll know everything there is to know about what it took to bring “Eclipse” to the big screen. The Solar System Aligns The movie history of “Eclipse” goes back to November 2008 — before “Twilight” even opened — when Summit Entertainment optioned the movie rights to “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.” Studio execs probably felt pretty smart when, one week later, “Twilight” opened to $69.6 million in box-office receipts. The phenomenon was under way, and soon, “Eclipse” had a release date . What it didn’t yet have was a director. Rumored names included Drew Barrymore and Juan Antonio Bayona , but the job ultimately went to “30 Days of Night” helmer David Slade . By spring 2009, casting for new roles was under way and the shoot schedule had been revealed, with photography slated to run from August 17 through October 31. By August, of course, the newcomers had signed on: Xavier Samuel as the vampire Riley; Jodelle Ferland as the vampire Bree; Jack Huston as a Depression-era playboy named Royce King; Catalina Sandino Moreno as the vampire Maria; Julia Jones as Leah Clearwater; Tinsel Korey as Emily; and BooBoo Stewart as Seth Clearwater. But the biggest casting move came in July, when Bryce Dallas Howard controversially replaced Rachelle Lefevre in the role of Victoria. The Stars Give Us Sneak Peeks As the start of production neared, we began to hear the cast dish dirt on the upcoming film. Taylor Lautner revealed his excitement about working with Slade. Jackson Rathbone and Kellan Lutz spoke about their intense preparation for some fight sequences. And Kristen Stewart got excited about the movie’s proposal scene, one of her favorite “Eclipse” scenes “Well, to decide you’re gonna marry someone at 18 is a pretty hefty decision,” she told MTV News. “And I didn’t want to look stupid. I didn’t want it to look like kids getting married. You know what I mean?” Gazing at “Eclipse” Filming had barely begun when we got our first look at the cast in action: Howard and Samuel locking lips . Slade also posted pictures on his Twitter account, including a stunning one of Lautner flipping through the air . The first official still arrived in October: Robert Pattinson and Stewart together in a field of wildflowers. Then in March, the first trailer hit the Web , giving us Pattinson and Stewart together in bed, Lautner without his shirt on and even some acrobatic vampire action. “It’s badass,” Lutz told MTV News about the footage. “The action really drew me in, and I think the guys are really going to like this movie.” A second trailer arrived the next month, courtesy of Oprah Winfrey’s show. If the first trailer was all about Edward, Bella and Jacob’s love triangle, then this one focused squarely on violent action. And in June, Stewart, Pattinson and Lautner took the stage at the MTV Movie Awards to present an exclusive clip from the film. More clips followed: Rosalie’s advice to Bella ; Edward’s warning to Jacob ; and the Volturi’s observation of the newborn vampire army. The Stars Welcome Us Back By the summer, the “Eclipse” stars were in full PR mode. We chatted with Elizabeth Reaser , Rathbone, Alex Meraz , Peter Facinelli and many more. We also sat down for extensive conversations with Pattinson , Stewart and Lautner . “It’s my favorite, because it’s the most guy-friendly by far,” Lautner said of “Eclipse.” “It’s dangerous. There’s a lot of action. The romance is still there, but the action level is stepped up way more. It’s great.” Last Wednesday marked the film’s glittering red-carpet premiere in Los Angeles, which MTV News streamed live . Stewart chatted about her “passion” for the franchise , and Pattinson likened the end of the series to “divorcing someone.” But just one premiere ain’t enough for the “Eclipse” kids. On Monday night, Stewart and Lautner stopped by a secret screening in New York, and, of course, MTV News was on hand to chat with the stars once again. After months of shooting and publicity rounds, with the film’s release just hours away, the talk turned to lighter topics. Stewart revealed that she’s actually an accomplished chef, while Lautner said you will never see him join up for a role in a big-screen musical. “No,” he laughed. “I mean, people actually tell me that I can [sing], but I think they’re just being nice — because I definitely can’t! No ‘Hairspray 2’!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Breaking Dawn’ Screenwriter Is ‘Deep In the Middle’ Of Script

‘One of the biggest challenges is it’s really thick with mythology,’ Melissa Rosenberg reveals to MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Melissa Rosenberg Photo: MTV News Although the first of its two installments is more than a year from hitting theaters, the forthcoming “Breaking Dawn” already has Twilighters trying to predict how much of the books will make it to the screen. MTV News recently went in search of some inside scoop from screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg . Like you, we wondered just how much of the 754-page book we can expect to see. “I’m deep in the middle of it,” Rosenberg said of her progress on a script. “I’ve been working on it for several months now and it’s a bear, but it’s exciting.” Rosenberg, who has written the screenplays for all three “Twilight” films, also revealed that the “Dawn” adaptation is proving particularly challenging because of the sheer number of characters and the dense mythology behind it all. “One of the biggest challenges, it’s really true with all the novels, but probably more so with this one, is it’s really thick with mythology, there are a lot of characters,” she said. “The characters expand with the arrival of Carlisle’s friends. It’s really about who do you pull forward, where do you focus?” Rosenberg said that though the story always centers on the three main characters — Edward, Bella and Jacob — she wants to make sure to explore the body of myths that fuel the vampire series. “That’s the dance I’m playing throughout the entire thing,” she said. As for the cast of the “Twilight Saga,” they seem to have welcomed news that the final chapter in the series will be a two-part story. “I didn’t want to read the script that was just one [movie],” Kristen Stewart recently told MTV News . “It would have lacked so much because you just couldn’t cram the story into one. At least that was my opinion, so I’m really excited.” “Eclipse” opens June 30, and the first of the two “Breaking Dawn” films is scheduled for a November 18, 2011, release. What part of the book should absolutely make it to the “Breaking Dawn” movies? Tell us in the comments! We’ll be live at the L.A. premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” on Thursday, June 24. Ian Somerhalder on Gulf Oil Spill: It’s Time to Change

On The Vampire Diaries , Ian Somerhalder play Damon Salvatore, an often-scary blood sucker. But in real life, the actor isn’t frightened by garlic or stakes to the heart – he’s simply taken aback by the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf. A native of Louisiana, Somherlader was front and center at the CNN telethon that raised $1.8 million this week. He’s also devoted the last few weeks to doing all he can to call attention to this region and this catastrophe. “You know when something bad happens in your life, or something goes wrong – that weird kind of really uneasy feeling you have in the pit of your stomach? I’ve had that for two months,” he told Zap2It, adding: “Basically, the entire area is shut down. Everyone from the waitress who serves you breakfast to the guy who owns the charter boat to the shrimpers – they all literally rely on the ocean to keep their industry going… Think about how frightening it is when you suddenly, though no fault of your own, can’t feed your children or pay your mortgage.” Somerhalder is especially outraged over how and why this accident took place. “All of this happened due to human error – the error is cutting corners, saving money at the expense of safety measures, and a nonexistent regulatory commission,” he said. “The [U.S. Minerals Management Service] gets royalties from the oil industry. How is that any kind of regulatory body?” It’s a question the admistration most definitely has to answer, as many believe this is the prime to enact a serious climate change bill and convince America that government can – nay, must! – play an important role in the free market. Concluded Ian, who we greatly admire for putting himself out there in this manner: “It’s time to change, and I think this disaster is the game changer. It feels like this is one of those catastrophic events that truly changes the way that we think.”

Kristen Stewart Says ‘Breaking Dawn’ In 3-D Would Be ‘Awesome’

‘What if she opens her eyes to this extraordinary world?’ actress says of soon-to-be vampire Bella. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News Will “Breaking Dawn” be in 3-D ? That’s the question Twilighters have been tossing around, particularly since news broke that the final chapter of the vampire saga would be split into two films . When MTV News asked Kristen Stewart back in February how she’d feel about seeing, say Bella Swan give birth “Avatar”-style, in 3-D , the star was a bit squeamish. But now, it seems Stewart may be warming up to the idea. “I’m probably speaking out of line or whatever, but I think it would be awesome,” she told MTV News about the prospect of “Breaking Dawn” director Bill Condon going three-dimensional. “Nobody knows what it’s like to look through the eyes of a vampire. What if [Bella] opens her eyes to this extraordinary world? It could be cool.” Of course, there’s still the issue of whether the gory birthing sequence that would bring Renesmee Cullen into the world should get the 3-D treatment — or any onscreen treatment at all. “I mean, the baby part, it’s easy to joke [about] how weird it would be, but it wouldn’t be the whole thing,” Stewart speculated of what might make it to film. “It would be parts.” For now, those details are still up in the air and the decisions will ultimately rest with Condon and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. As for what we do know, Stewart is thrilled that the “Breaking Dawn” story will be told in two parts . “I’m really excited,” Stewart said when we spoke with her as she promoted the June 30 opening of “Eclipse.” “I didn’t want to read the script that was just one [movie]. It would have lacked so much because you just couldn’t cram the story into one. At least that was my opinion, so I’m really excited.” Should “Breaking Dawn” hit theaters in 3-D? Robert Pattinson Says Bella And Jacob’s Relationship Is ‘Easier’

‘Edward’s got to remember, or learn, how to be a normal 17-year-old,’ ‘Eclipse’ star says of love triangle. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News If you pay attention to the tabloids, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are either about to get engaged, or one “Twilight” co-star has gone ahead and dumped the other. It’s all too silly to pay attention to, and it proves how complicated it is for RPattz and KStew to have a relationship of any kind while so fully in the public eye. And the relationship of their fictional alter egos, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan , isn’t any easier. He was transformed into a deadly vampire in 1918; she’s a normal, accident-prone high school girl growing up in the Pacific Northwest. You can see why Pattinson might think Jacob Black is in many ways a better fit for Bella than Edward is. No matter that Black is a shape-shifting werewolf. “Their relationship is so much easier, Bella and Jacob, because he’s just a normal kid,” Pattinson told MTV News. “Edward’s got to remember, or learn, how to be a normal 17-year-old, because he’s never bothered.” As Pattinson describes it, Edward spent the first two movies in the vampire franchise remaining largely aloof, even going so far as to leave Bella in “New Moon,” deciding that she’d be better off without him. All that changes in “Eclipse,” and Edward has to play some serious cultural catch-up. It’s anything but easy. “[T]he whole thing is him having to accept the consequences of [being with Bella], which means catching up to the same pace of every other 17-year-old in the contemporary world, emotionally and intellectually and everything, and realizing he’s quite a long way behind,” Pattinson said. Does RPattz have a point about Edward and Bella, or is he just being humble? Share your analyses in the comments. We’ll be

‘Eclipse’ Soundtrack Debuts At #2 — Should Fans Worry?

We take a look at what that album sales mean for the latest ‘Twilight’ film’s box-office numbers. By Eric Ditzian “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack Photo: Atlantic When it was released in November 2008, the “Twilight” soundtrack shot straight to the top of the Billboard albums charts, and by the end of the month, the first of the vampire franchise flicks had opened at #1 on its way to $193 million in box-office receipts. A year later, in its first full week out, the “New Moon” disc also topped the charts, warming up fans’ ears and wallets before the film started its climb toward $297 million in total ticket sales. Now the “Eclipse” soundtrack has dropped, and its opening-week numbers — 144,000 albums sold, good for Billboard ‘s #2 slot on next week’s chart — represent the weakest debut yet for the franchise’s albums. Is it time to panic? Might this be the first glimpse of the decline of “Twilight”? Hardly. “I don’t think the drop-off is anything to be freaked out about,” said Keith Caulfield, senior chart manager/analyst for Billboard. “I wouldn’t pin it on just one thing. You can chalk it up a bit to album sales declining in general. And it’s not surprising that part three sells what it sells in its first week, because as with anything, especially continuing movie franchises or TV series franchises, the interest begins to wane a little as the excitement and the newness dissipates a bit.” Yet it’s important to note that with the first two films, album sales and box-office numbers had an inverse relationship. The “Twilight” disc boasts 2.6 million in total sales and “New Moon” ultimately moved 1.1 million discs, while “New Moon” out-grossed its predecessor by $104 million. Further explaining the disparity in album sales is that, unlike the first soundtrack, the “New Moon” disc didn’t boast a tune by star Robert Pattinson on its track listing (nor does the “Eclipse” album). Of course, RPattz’s smoldering mug is all over the films. The point is, while there is a relationship between album and ticket sales, the two do not move in lockstep. “A not-perfect comparison would be when people discuss the ratings of ‘American Idol’ to how well Lee DeWyze or Crystal Bowersox are going to do [selling albums],” Caulfield noted. “The TV show exists in a different world from the artists and their music. If 20 million people tune in to vote each week, not very many of them are actually buying anything. It’s the same thing with ‘Twilight.’ Some people find the music perfectly pleasant in the film, but they’re not going to be moved to actually purchase the album for whatever reason.” What they will be moved to do is continue to the support the film franchise — “New Moon” swept the fan-voted MTV Movie Awards this month — and buy oodles of theater tickets. “New Moon” is the top-selling pre-release title in the 10-year history of ticketing site Fandango, and there’s no reason to expect “Eclipse” to suffer a dramatic drop-off (pre-sale numbers for the film are not yet available). After the film premieres, there may even be an uptick in “Eclipse” music sales. Following the November release of “New Moon,” Billboard noticed an increase in sales related to interest in the Lykke Li track, “Possibility,” which was featured during a key montage in the film and made the Oscar Best Original Song shortlist in December. “That song really resonated with people, and they wanted to get the album partially for that song,” Caulfield said. Come the June 30 premiere of “Eclipse,” the soundtrack might benefit from similar, experience-based fan curiosity. ” ‘Twilight’ has done a really great job of curating the music on the albums, because it so complements the intention of the films and the author’s intent,” Caulfield said. “People who are interested in ‘Twilight’ are especially interested in the music because it’s all part of one big story.” Have you bought the “Eclipse” soundtrack? How does it compare to the first two? Share your thoughts in the comments. We’ll be

Robert Pattinson Says Life Without Music Is ‘Driving Me Crazy’

‘I’ve just bought a couple new guitars, and I’ve started trying to write things again,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News Back in July 2008, “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke told MTV News that Robert Pattinson had plans to compose three songs for the vampire film’s soundtrack. As it turned out, only one RPattz track popped up on the album, but Twilighters were on notice: The Brit actor harbored some serious musical ambitions. “I was doing music before I started acting, so I still have bits and pieces, and I’ve been playing in Portland [during the shoot],” Pattinson told us on the “Twilight” set . “I’ve been trying to write an album for years and years.” Two years later, with the third installment of the franchise about to hit theaters, Pattinson has found himself frustratingly disconnected from that passion and without the time to listen to much music or write his own material. “I haven’t been [paying attention to music] for a while,” he told MTV News. “I don’t know why. I’ve just sort of not been listening to it. It’s so odd when that happens. You’re just like, ‘I’ve forgotten what everything is.’ ” Yet Pattinson refuses to let his musical talents go to waste, as he’s trying to dive back into songwriting mode. Stymieing those efforts are his jam-packed schedule of shooting and publicity; he’s in the midst of shooting “Water for Elephants” with Reese Witherspoon at the same time that he’s promoting “Eclipse.” “I’ve just bought a couple new guitars, and I’ve started trying to write things again,” he said. “But I never have any time, ever.” You can tell how perturbed Pattinson is by his inability to carve out time to play music. And you’ve got to hope he figures out a way to make music work within the confines of his hectic professional career, because right now, he’s bummed without music in his life. “It’s kind of driving me crazy,” he said.
