Fat Joe Calls Rumors Of His Rap Demise Premature At LP Listening Party

‘Did you ever have anybody try to kill you?’ the Bronx MC says of being counted out after weak album sales. By Shaheem Reid Fat Joe Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ FilmMagic Fat Joe is like the vampire Bill Compton on HBO’s “True Blood” — crawling out of the dirt after being, in a sense, buried alive. “They tried to disrespect the God, realest rapper ever,” Joe said Monday when we joined him at Manhattan’s Skyline Studios. The Bronx MC was talking to a group of journalists and select DJs (Clark Kent, Bobby Trends, Mister Cee and others) assembled for a listening session of his new LP, The Darkside Vol. 1, due July 27. “Did you ever have anybody try to kill you?” Joe asked, addressing Kent and Trends. “They tried to erase 15 years!” After sales of his last album, 2009’s Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.2), turned out to be meager at best, some journalists, bloggers and fans said Joe’s career was done. But on Monday night, a confident Joe Crack responded to his critics, playing Darkside over and over for hours and proclaiming the work a classic. And one song in particular seemed destined to be his newest banger: the Rico Love-assisted “No Problems.” “July 4th weekend, this will paralyze the city!” Joe said of the track. As an engineer pressed play, a thunderous “aahhhh aahhhh” came up through the speakers. Mister Cee quickly called out the “No Problems” sample as the song shook the room. “To all y’all DJs, do not go put ‘Terminator [X] to the Edge of Panic’ and ‘Flash Gordon’ on your computers now,” the legendary DJ ordered, name-checking the Public Enemy track which borrowed from Queen’s “Flash.” “Joe, do not give out an instrumental. You don’t want a bunch of n—as Mr. Potato Head-ing your record,” he joked. While Scoop DeVille produced that record, Joe also enlisted other producers for the project, including Cool and Dre, Infamous, Raw Uncut, Street Runner, Scram Jones and Just Blaze, who helmed the “I am Crack” track, which finds Joey Crack rapping from the perspective of rock cocaine. DJ Premier is behind “I’m Gone,” and Joe explained that he got the track from him the same day Preemo’s Gang Starr partner Guru passed away in April. “I’m gangster/ F— that, I’m Gang Starr,” Joe raps on the record, on which he pays homage to the late MC. “Tell Nas hip-hop’s dead now/ My man’s gone.”

Nina Dobrev Nude: Not Coming Soon!

As one of the breakout hits of the 2009-2010 TV season, The Vampire Diaries featured murder, intrigue and sex. But just because her character got it on with Paul Wesley’s Stefan Salvatore, Nina Dobrev has an unfortunate message for male fans of her show: you won’t see me naked! “I’m very content with not being nude on national television – I enjoy True Blood myself and I watch the show, but I’m happy that bra and underwear is as stripped down as I can get for [ The Vampire Diaries ].” Dobrev uttered these words at the Monte Carlo Television Festival, where she was also asked to compare The Vampire Diaries with similar programming available to viewers: True Blood and Twilight . She said: “I don’t think that we’re necessarily competitors. We’re all kind of in the same genre… but they are all very different. It’s like apples and oranges. I have friends in all three of the shows that are vampire related, so I’m very happy for all of our successes.” While Nina will be keeping her shirt on, there’s good news for female viewers of the show: Wesley and Ian Somerhalder (pictured below with their co-star in Monte Carlo) will NOT be. New episodes suddenly can’t come fast enough, can they?

The ‘Twilight’ Stars’ History With The MTV Movie Awards

From Kristen Stewart dropping her award to her near-kiss with Robert Pattinson, ‘The Twilight Saga’ has provided the awards show with many memorable moments. By Amy Wilkinson Anna Kendrick, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Getty Images As host Aziz Ansari joked at the close of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, the “New Moon” sweep of all the categories surprised, well, no one. In fact, anyone who’s watched the Movie Awards over the past three years knows the vampire saga and the awards ceremony go together almost as well as a clumsy teen named Bella and the century-old bloodsucker who loves her. Months before “Twilight” hit theaters back in November 2008, under-the-radar stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart — wearing matching Ray-Bans — and co-star Cam Gigandet attended the 2008 Movie Awards to introduce an exclusive clip from the Saga’s first film during the pre-show — the pre-show! But by the time the trio and co-star Taylor Lautner appeared at the Video Music Awards a few months later to introduce “Twilight” soundtrack band Paramore, they’d gained plenty of buzz. In fact, many Twilighters were outraged when host Russell Brand supposedly interrupted Pattinson during his speech. Hordes of Twilighters took to the Web to express their frustration and anger at the host. Fast-forward to 2009’s Movie Awards and Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner had become worldwide superstars thanks to the runaway box-office success of “Twilight” and the ensuing “Twilight” mania sweeping the nation. “Twilight” scored five Golden Popcorns that night, including Best Movie, Best Female Performance for Stewart, Breakthrough Performance Male for Pattinson, Best Kiss for Stewart and Pattinson and Best Fight for Pattinson and Gigandet. “Twilight” nearly swept every category it was nominated in save for Best Song From a Movie, which went to Miley Cyrus instead of Paramore’s “Decode.” The cast’s appearance at the 2009 show garnered many memorable moments. While accepting her Golden Popcorn for Best Female Performance, Stewart famously fumbled her award, with it eventually thudding to the floor of the Gibson Amphitheatre stage (which is probably why one of the first things she did during her 2010 win was place the statue safely on the ground before her speech). Later, when Stewart and Pattinson won the honor for Best Kiss, the two torturously teased the audience with the possibility of a lip-lock. Pattinson took the gum out of his mouth, the two closed their eyes and leaned in, but before the pucker could take place, Stewart turned away yelling, “Thank you so much!” Though fans likely felt slighted by the Pattinson/Stewart almost-kiss, they were aptly rewarded later in the ceremony when the duo and Lautner debuted the first “New Moon” trailer, which Pattinson called “a thank-you to the fans.” A few months later at the 2009 VMA Awards, the stars doubly thanked fans by introducing an extended version of the “New Moon” trailer. At this year’s ceremony, the vampire saga finally completed its long-awaited sweep — not to mention, Twilighters got what they truly wanted: a quick onstage kiss between Bella and Edward, er, Stewart and Pattinson. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Is ‘Big Enough’ For Two Films, Chris Weitz Says

‘New Moon’ director also talks birth scene: ‘Kristen Stewart giving live birth through the stomach in 3-D! I’m there.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Chris Weitz Photo: MTV News The “Twilight” gang loves Chris Weitz. There’s no doubting that. In the run-up to the release of the Weitz-helmed “New Moon,” Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner spoke effusively about working with the director, even hoping he might reprise his role behind the camera for “Breaking Dawn.” Weitz ended up declining the opportunity to bring the final book in the vampire series to the big screen, but he remains flattered that the cast supports him and even has a bit of advice for “Breaking Dawn” director Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls”). “That’s very sweet,” Weitz told MTV News when reminded of how the cast has championed him. “I think that’s because I was the last person who directed them.” Weitz, who led “New Moon” to more than $700 million in worldwide box-office receipts, is confident that Condon is the right man to step into the director’s chair for “Breaking Dawn.” “I think he’s terribly talented,” Weitz said. “I know him, he’s a solid citizen, great guy, very smart. I think he’s going to do an amazing job.” His one piece of advice? “Think carefully about babies clawing out of people’s stomachs,” Weitz said in reference to one scene in the book, going on to refer to an even more famous scene in 1979’s “Alien.” “[Director] Ridley Scott sort of did it.” Weitz added with a laugh, “Kristen Stewart giving live birth through the stomach in 3-D! I’m there. I’m paying.” And he’d be happy to pay for not just one film, but two. It has long been rumored that “Breaking Dawn” will be split into two flicks. That’s a move Weitz endorses. “The book is big enough that it would warrant it,” he said. Vampire Diaries Season Finale Will Leave You Speechless + Last 5 Minute Spoiler

I’m still in shock from the Vampire Diaries Finale tonight. The Founder’s Day event happened with Elana wearing a gown like Katherine wore back when Damon and Stefan were with her. Damon was rendered speechless while Stefan simply smiled. Let me just get to the good part and we will recap this all nice and pretty tomorrow. Damon is on the porch with Elana after the Founder’s event, he starts getting all gushing and saying he cares for her, Bonnie, and her brother but then he gets all up in Elana’s face. He plants a tender kiss to her cheek and then goes in for the big kiss. I could hardly believe it. But, wait! Elana goes in the house, looking like she has no regrets. She walks into the kitchen where John is about to make him something to eat and she asks if he needs help. He says, yes and she takes the biggest knife there is, looks at the ring on his finger and chops his hand off before stabbing him. And, it’s not Elana. Katherine is BACK. Oh, it’s going to be good. Too bad we have to wait until next season to see how it all turns out. More recap tomorrow….

Vampire Weekend ‘Holiday’ Video Premieres Today On MTV/MTV2!

Low-budget clip for Contra single shows band dressed in powdered wigs, stockings and ordering burgers. By James Montgomery Vampire Weekend’s “Holiday” Vampire Weekend ‘s “Holiday” is a rather cutting assessment of capitalism and colonialism and the special sort of cocoon both those things help create. With lyrical nods to republics on the beach, the tea trade and a girl who decides to protest the war by going vegetarian (as opposed to, you know, doing anything that may actually help), it’s the kind of whip-smart pop that’s in short supply these days — a cranky and clever tweaking of hideous Americans abroad, and equally hideous Americans at home. Needless to say, “Holiday” probably won’t be burning up the nation’s airwaves anytime soon, but that hasn’t stopped VW from releasing it as the third single off their surprisingly successful Contra album. And you can sort of understand why. After scoring a #1 album and a pair of unlikely rock-radio hits, they’re playing with house money at this point anyway. To accompany their odd choice of single, the band has delivered an equally odd video, a delightfully low-budget clip ( no Jake Gyllenhaal here) that sees the Vampire guys parading around Southern California dressed as dandy, European gentlemen of leisure. Powdered wigs, waistcoats, breeches, stockings and a whole lot of ruffled accoutrements — it’s all there. And while it may be hilarious to watch them prance around SoCal, order In-N-Out Burger (at least, I think it’s In-N-Out Burger) and pound on surfers down by the beach, there’s probably a deeper message here: These are exactly the same kind of out-of-touch, entitled intellectuals frontman Ezra Koenig is singing about in the song — only from about 300 years ago. These powdered ponces conquered, enslaved and trampled those less fortunate than them, and did so for centuries, before they were eventually overthrown (and mostly beheaded) by the same folks they’d been subjugating. I’ll let you draw the comparisons to, say, the last 50 years of U.S. foreign policy or the creeping advance of capitalism on the undeveloped world … and what may very well be waiting around the corner for us one day if we keep it up. Or, you know, you could just laugh at the dudes in the funny wigs. It kind of works either way. And that’s sort of the brilliance of Vampire Weekend. “Holiday” might not be the same kind of hit as “Cousins” or “Giving Up the Gun,” but that’s hardly the point. Just by getting this one out there, they’ve already won, even if it’s just a tiny victory. Don’t let the boat shoes and pique polo shits fool you — Vampire Weekend are downright dangerous dudes. That you can dance to, of course. Do you think “Holiday” will be another Vampire Weekend hit? Let us know in the comments Related Artists Vampire Weekend
