MTV’s Musical March Madness Reaches The Elite Eight

My Chemical Romance outlast 30 Seconds to Mars, in Bigger Than the Sound ‘s bracketology! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic When historians look back on MTV News’ inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, they will undoubtedly focus on the Sweet 16 matchup between My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds to Mars (well, either that or Linkin Park ‘s rather erroneous omission from the entire field of 65). It was, to borrow a few catchphrases, a clash of the titans, a barn-burner, a good old-fashioned slobberknocker: Two of the biggest bands on the planet — with two of the most rabid fanbases, the MCRmy and the Echelon — squaring off for a spot in the Elite Eight. It was like Duke/ North Carolina, Ohio State/ Michigan, Israel University/ Palestine Tech, only bloodier, more venomous. It was a match for the ages. Votes poured in by the bucket load. Both bands led for extended periods of time, fell behind, then surged into the lead again, thanks to some rather creative campaigning (30STM imploring fans to vote from their school’s computer labs was a genius touch,) and, perhaps fittingly, when voting closed on Tuesday night, things were tied, with each act grabbing 50 percent of the vote. So, who won? Well, in a contest where more than 50,000 ballots were cast, it came down to just 327 votes, and in the end, My Chem moved on to the Elite Eight. I’m not gonna lie, we’ll miss 30 Seconds to Mars and their fanatic, somewhat insane dedication to winning a fictional championship. But the fans have spoken, and Leto and company will have to wait until next year. So, who will be joining My Chemical Romance in the Elite Eight? You can take a look at our updated bracket here , and voting will open Wednesday afternoon (March 31) over on the Newsroom blog . Let’s get to the results. Midwest In a region highlighted by shocking upsets (#16 the Hold Steady besting #1 Nickelback, #11 Shinedown over #6 Cobra Starship), we’re left with a pretty straightforward final: second-seeded Muse versus fourth-seeded the White Stripes. Both bands handled their Sweet 16 opponents with relative ease — the Stripes thumped Patrick Stump, and Muse rallied to knock off a game AFI — but only one can advance to the Final Four. Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! The results: (4) The White Stripes def. (9) Patrick Stump, 70-30 (2) Muse def. (14) AFI, 53-47 So, once again, our final in the Midwest region is #2 Muse v. #4 the White Stripes. To be honest, I’m sort of amazed the Stripes have made it this far. I didn’t think Jack White even knew how to use a computer. West The Wild West continued to live up to its nickname, as it played host to both the MCR/30STM tilt and #14 the Young Veins vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco, a matchup that pitted former bandmates against one another. Sadly — perhaps due to Ryan Ross’ refusal to campaign on behalf of his band — Panic! rolled past the Veins, setting up a final of two bands that haven’t released much new music in recent years but whose fans don’t seem to mind. The results: (5) My Chemical Romance def. (9) 30 Seconds To Mars, 50-50 (OT, MCR won on total votes) (15) Panic! at the Disco def. (14) The Young Veins, 85-15 The West region final is #5 My Chemical Romance v. #15 Panic! at the Disco. Can the Panic! boys’ dream run continue on to the Final Four? Or will MCR continue to flex their muscles? It’s up to you. East I suppose it had to come down to this: 16th-seeded Tokio Hotel, who entered the tournament merely as an afterthought, roll on to the Elite Eight, after finally putting away a testy Vampire Weekend. (True story, VW frontman Ezra Koenig totally tweeted at me to complain about his band’s matchup.) They’ll face off against Owl City, who pasted MGMT. Both bands’ fanatical fanbases will need to up their efforts leading up to the Final Four. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def. (4) Vampire Weekend, 63-37 (3) Owl City def. (7) MGMT, 62-38 So, our East region final pits #3 Owl City against #16 Tokio Hotel. Surely the Internet will buckle beneath the weight of the vote. South The region that refuses to make any sense reaches perhaps the most (il)logical conclusion possible: #13 Alice in Chains — who outlasted Adam Lambert — going up against #15 Coheed and Cambria, who topped heavily favored Phish. Coheed seem to care about this tournament more than any band left in the field, so I suppose it’s hard to bet against them at this point. The results: (13) Alice in Chains def. (9) Adam Lambert, 65-35 (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (6) Phish, 56-44 The South final is #13 Alice in Chains v. #15 Coheed and Cambria. Someone’s got to win, right? Once again, Elite Eight voting opens Wednesday afternoon and runs until Thursday night over on the Newsroom blog. Vote early, vote often, and perhaps you can help your favorite band advance to the Final Four! Who do you think will take home the Musical March Madness championship? Are you as surprised as we are by the results? Talk about it here! Related Photos MTV News’ Band Bracketology Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! MTV’s Musical March Madness: We Reach The Sweet 16 — Vote Now!

Tokio Hotel, 30 Seconds to Mars and more march on in MTV News’ Band Bracketology By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars are poised for domination Photo: Nigel Crane/ Redferns We started MTV News’ Musical March Madness with 64 bands (well, 65 if you count Against Me!), whittled it down to 32 last week, and now, after hundreds of thousands of votes — and nearly as many ticked-off fans — we’ve reached the Sweet 16. Much like the real NCAA tourney, we had upsets, buzzer beaters and even an overtime tilt or two. After some heated, back-and-forth battles, we had heavyweights going down and Cinderella bands dancing on. One of these remaining bands will be crowned champion — and, once again, it’ll be up to you to determine who makes it to the Elite Eight. You can view the updated Band Bracket here , and Sweet 16 voting is now open on the Newsroom blog . Polls will close Tuesday night, so you’d better get cracking. And now, on to the recaps. All results are based on percentage of votes, in case you were wondering. Midwest The region where dreams go to die. Both #11 Shinedown and #10 Breaking Benjamin rolled into the field of 32 with momentum on their sides, and both jumped out to commanding leads over their respective opponents (#14 AFI and #2 Muse) but, in the end, neither band was able to hold on, and both were sent packing. The White Stripes dispensed of pesky 12th-seeded OK Go with relative ease, and, in the bracket’s best matchup, 9th-seeded Patrick Stump needed overtime to best the upset-minded Hold Steady, who led early but wilted under Stump’s full-court pressure. The results: (9) Patrick Stump def. (16) the Hold Steady (OT, Stump won on total votes) (4) The White Stripes def. (12) OK Go, 60-40 (14) AFI def. (11) Shinedown, 61-39 (2) Muse def. (10) Breaking Benjamin, 53-47 The Midwest’s Sweet 16 matchups are #9 Patrick Stump vs. #4 the White Stripes, and #2 Muse vs. #14 AFI. West Things continued to be wild out West, with #9 30 Seconds to Mars and #1 Blink-182 going head-to-head in a battle for the ages. Both bands led for extended periods of time, but in the end (thanks to some rather fervent Twitter campaigning by guitarist Tomo Milicevic), the guys in 30 STM pulled off the upset. Fifth-seeded My Chemical Romance rolled #4 Pearl Jam, #15 Panic! at the Disco blasted #7 Death Cab for Cutie, and #14 the Young Veins mounted a furious comeback to nip #6 Weezer. The results: (9) 30 Seconds To Mars def. (1) Blink-182, 69-31 (5) My Chemical Romance def. (4) Pearl Jam, 63-37 (14) The Young Veins def. (6) Weezer, 53-47 (15) Panic! at the Disco def. (7) Death Cab For Cutie, 72-28 Which means that, in the West, we’ve got a pair of totally epic matchups in the Sweet 16: #5 My Chemical Romance vs. #9 30 Seconds to Mars, and — in a battle that pits former bandmates against one another — #14 the Young Veins vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco. East Tokio Hotel march on! Originally only making the field of 64 as an afterthought, they knocked off #1 Coldplay in the first round of the tourney, then took it to #8 Radiohead in the second round. At this point, they’ve got to be the presumptive favorites to come out of the region. In other action, #4 Vampire Weekend outlasted #5 Phoenix in a battle of blog favorites, #3 Owl City nipped #6 Grizzly Bear, and #7 MGMT knocked off #2 Animal Collective. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def. (8) Radiohead, 69-31 (4) Vampire Weekend def. (5) Phoenix, 55-45 (3) Owl City def. (6) Grizzly Bear, 51-49 (7) MGMT def. (2) Animal Collective, 63-37 So in the East, we’re left with a rather improbable pair of Sweet 16 matchups: #16 Tokio Hotel vs. #4 Vampire Weekend, and #3 Owl City vs. #7 MGMT. Someone’s got to win, right? South The region that refuses to be figured out. One week after they shocked the world by upsetting #1 Kings of Leon, 16th-seeded Creed got knocked off by Adam Lambert in rather convincing fashion. 13th-seeded Alice in Chains kept their impossible dream alive by outgunning #12 Nick Jonas (and his Administration), #6 Phish rolled past #3 the Dave Matthews Band and #15 Coheed and Cambria — the band nobody wants to face at this point — knocked off #10 Mastodon. The results: (9) Adam Lambert def. (16) Creed, 65-35 (13) Alice in Chains def. (12) Nick Jonas, 56-44 (6) Phish def. (3) Dave Matthews Band, 69-31 (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (10) Mastodon, 68-32 The Sweet 16 matchups in the South should be epic: #9 Adam Lambert vs. #13 Alice in Chains, #6 Phish vs. #15 Coheed and Cambria. MTV News’ Musical March Madness Sweet 16 voting is open now on the Newsroom blog and will run until Tuesday night. Hit the polls, and perhaps you can help your favorite band win a largely arbitrary and non-existent championship! Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars

Demi Lovato Says Boyfriend Joe Jonas Doesn’t Share Her Love For Heavy Metal

‘I played it for him and he’s like, ‘Whoa that’s crazy,’ ‘ the Disney star said on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live.’ By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato appears on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Photo: ABC Joe Jonas apparently doesn’t have a high tolerance for girlfriend and fellow Disney star Demi Lovato ‘s taste in heavy metal. Lovato, appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night, said she was tired after going to see a Maylene and the Sons of Disaster concert the previous night. When asked if boyfriend Joe shared her fondness for “hard-core Southern rock metal band,” Lovato said, “No, we’ve talked about it. … I played it for him and he’s like, ‘Whoa that’s crazy.’ ” While they might not agree on what kind of music to listen to (Jonas has admitted to being a big fan of indie rock band Vampire Weekend ), not surprisingly, they haven’t even broached the subject of starting a family. “You know, it’s a little early to talk about that,” Lovato told Kimmel. All joking aside, the couple will appear on “American Idol” this week, where they will sing their duet, “Make a Wave,” from the new Disneynature flick “Oceans.” (Jonas appeared on “Idol” earlier this season as a guest judge .) “Yes we’re doing a duet. I’m afraid of Simon, so I’m good [about not being judged by him while on the show]. … The song’s coming out and it’s great,” she explained. “It’s not about being in love. It’s whatever you interpret it to be.” Lovato currently stars on the Disney series “Sonny With a Chance,” but she got her big start in entertainment alongside a certain big purple dinosaur. “I was on the ‘Barney’ show for about two seasons. I don’t [keep in touch]. You realize he’s kind of a dinosaur,” she joked to Kimmel. Related Artists Demi Lovato Joe Jonas

Corey Haim’s MTV Interviews Through The Years

MTV first caught up with the late ‘Lost Boys’ star in 1987. By Eric Ditzian Corey Haim in 1987 Photo: MTV News From Corey Haim’s teenage years as a Hollywood heartthrob to his attempts at a comeback, MTV News has followed the actor’s career and sat down for several on-cameras interview with him. After Haim’s death Wednesday morning from an apparent drug overdose, we went back into our archives to pull out some compelling moments over the last two decades. In 1987, fresh off the success of “Lucas,” in which he played a painfully awkward teen who decides to join the football team to impress a cheerleader he’s fallen for, Haim sat down with MTV to promote the vampire drama “The Lost Boys.” In the midst of a wide-ranging discussion alongside co-star Jason Patric, Haim talked about the evolution of his career. ” ‘Lucas,’ everybody was like, ‘Aw, he’s so cute. He’s such a little nerdy kind of guy,” he said. “With ‘Silver Bullet’ I was in a [wheel]chair. In ‘A Time to Live,” I had muscular dystrophy. I portrayed a kid who was dying. His mom was freaking out. This is pretty much my first chance to say, ‘Hey, he’s a dude. Gnarly!’ ” The next year, we caught up with Haim again, this time quite unexpectedly during an interview with his friend and frequent co-star Corey Feldman . The two threw their arms around each other, messed around and took nothing too seriously — even a discussion of Feldman’s legal battle to become emancipated from his parents. “We’re best friends and we have the same name, so it’s very easy,” Feldman said. “And the same style of dressing!” Haim added. The duo would go on to star in films like, “Dream a Little Dream,” “License to Drive” and “Blown Away.” But when we caught up with Haim almost two decades later, while he promoted his comeback reality series with Feldman called “The Two Coreys,” we encountered quite a different person. He’d battled substance abuse for years and had checked into treatment centers too many times to count, but maintained he’d finally gotten sober. “Everyone asks me, ‘Would you change anything, Corey Haim , from your past because of the drugs?’ ” he told us. “No, except maybe the emotional hurt I put on my family and friends. But no, I wouldn’t change anything.” Just a few years later, though, Haim died at the age of 38. “This is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family, and best friend,” Feldman said in a statement released Wednesday.
