A Royal Frenzy: Tabloids Concoct Coverage of Kate Middleton and Prince William Engagement

What’s the only development that will get tabloids in more of a frenzy than rumors of an engagement between Kate Middleton and Prince William? That’s easy: An actual Kate Middleton and Prince William engagement . Following months of speculation over whether this couple was broken up or already wedding planning , trashy magazines scrambled this week to find some unique angle on the fact that Kate and William are simply happy, together and engaged. Let’s see what they came up with: From stories on the “real” Kate (newsflash: she wears a bikini sometimes!) to inside dish on how Middleton has been molded into a princess, these publications claim to have it all. To wit: Us Weekly reports Kate has received “royal assistance” for years, including lessons on the paparazzi-filled life of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Says Katie Nicholl, author of “William and Harry: Behind the Palace Walls.” “About three years ago, palace staff started showing Kate video of Diana. Video of her getting out of a car and paparazzi going berserk, so that Kate would know how to deal with it. Now, she already knows how this works.” One of Kate’s first lessons in this world: don’t speak to tabloids such as Us Weekly .

Randy Quaid: Canada Saved My Life!

Increasingly crazy actor Randy Quaid says if it wasn’t for Canada’s refugee system, he and his wife Evi would be dead. Thanks to the star whackers , natch. Quaid made this comment as he entered his immigration and refugee board hearing in Vancouver, B.C. The couple faces an outstanding warrant in the U.S. “If it wasn’t for Canada’s refuge system, my wife and I would be dead,” Randy told CKNW Vancouver, adding that he “feels good” despite the drama. BRINGING THE CRAZY : No one does it like the Quaids . The strange couple, wanted for squatting in a home they used to own in California, is claiming refugee status because of a bizarre theory that they’re in danger. According to Randy and Evi Quaid , a random, roving gang of hooligans is hell-bent on ruining the lives of and/or murdering famous people such as themselves. The situation became even stranger after the board determined that Evi Quaid could claim Canadian citizenship because her father was born in Canada. Today’s hearing will establish if Randy may remain in Canada. We sort of hope he can, for his sake, even if it’d be more entertaining if he came home.

How Horrible is This! Teens share photos of rape on Facebook

The horrific gang rape of a 16-year-old girl is roiling Canada. It's suspected that she was drugged at a rave on Saturday and then assaulted in a nearby field by a group of males. Truly adding insult to injury: The attack in Pitt Meadows, B.C., was photographed and videotaped — and the evidence was then published on Facebook by one of her alleged attackers. The photos and video “have been viewed, shared, saved and reposted numerous times,” an official told the Vancouver Sun. The images are spreading like wildfire, and it's impossible to contain. This is the typical predicament law enforcement faces when it comes to online child pornography: Once it's out there, it's usually out there for good. The digital trail is just too difficult to trace. We've seen a similar thing with teen “sexting.” A boyfriend gets angry when his girlfriend breaks up with him, so he texts a naked photo of her to all his buddies, they send it to all their buddies, and so on and so forth. In the end, it's hard to know just how many people have seen the image and where it's ended up. This reminds me of reports earlier this year about a woman who goes by the pseudonym Amy: Her uncle sexually abused her as a little girl and circulated the photographic evidence in child porn circles. Now she's calling for damages from anyone caught with images of her abuse; so far, her photos have shown up in more than 800 child porn prosecutions. In a letter to the court, she wrote: “It is hard to describe what it feels like to know that at any moment, anywhere, someone is looking at pictures of me as a little girl being abused by my uncle and is getting some kind of sick enjoyment from it. It's like I am being abused over and over and over again.” The same could also be said about the images of the alleged gang rape. The major difference here is that the material is being distributed via a mainstream website. For the most part, these are not pedophilic child pornography collectors; many of the distributors are teenagers themselves. This of course has many adults asking that age-old question: What's wrong with kids these days? I suspect there are a couple explanations that do not require us to label “kids these days” as amoral animals. No. 1 on my list is, of course, the culture of victim blaming. According to one report, “only hours after disturbing pictures were posted on Facebook, teens were already suggesting the victim was a willing participant and asked for it.” This “othering” response allows people to mentally guard themselves against the possibility of ever being a victim themselves; it's what's known as the “just-world phenomenon” (and, ironically, it creates a less just world). Of course, the other defining element here is the Internet. The Web allows us to share videos — whether it's a crazy cat trick or footage of someone's death — with very few keystrokes, and often very little thought. These kids have grown up in the age of “Two Girls One Cup,” a coprophilic video that rose to viral status thanks to the utter horror that it inspired in viewers. There are legion examples of even journalistic videos and photographs that have whipped around the Web specifically because they are horrifying — think of the Neda Agha-Soltan video, for example. These sorts of images are the norm. We have access to them, they exist, and so we view them — duh. Carry this view a little further and it isn't hard to understand how even a nonsociopathic teenager might opt to view a photo of a girl's rape, or even send it along to a friend. This is so often how we share things, good and bad; we hit “forward” or “re-tweet” or “like,” etc. Technology offers us a sense of privacy, and detachment, even as we're sharing these things with the entire Web. The online mentality is one of entitlement and total freedom, no one has ownership over anything (just ask record label execs). I would venture to say that it hasn't even occurred to many of the kids — the ones who are not, you know, patently evil — that they are violating this girl themselves. added by: Future_America

Did the burn patterns of the acid reflect Bethany Storro’s account of a stranger tossing it in her face?

Police Say Wash. Acid Attack Self-Inflicted Bethany Storro Admitted Story Was Fake, Vancouver Police Say Posted: 7:23 pm EDT September 16, 2010Updated: 7:11 am EDT September 17, 2010 VANCOUVER, Wash. — When the initial shock faded, police in this suburb of Portland, Ore., began to question some details in Bethany Storro's account of the day her face was irreparably burned by acid. Why, they asked, did the burn patterns of the acid not reflect Storro's account of a stranger tossing it in her face? Why was she wearing sunglasses – something she said she never did – just after 7 p.m. on Aug. 30? And why did no one see the alleged assailant? Those questions culminated in a search warrant served at Storro's house on Thursday, when she admitted that she fabricated the story of a stranger's attack. Instead, she said, she did it to herself. The attack drew worldwide sympathy. Facebook groups were formed to draw attention to her plight. A fundraiser was planned in Vancouver, and donation sites were established at branches of two local banks. So it was in a soft-spoken voice that Vancouver police chief Clifford Cook told reporters on Thursday that Storro invented the story. “During the course of the investigation, several discrepancies began to emerge regarding the alleged attack,” Cook said. “During the interview, Ms. Storro admitted the injuries were self-inflicted.” Cook said he did not know a motive for Storro's actions, but added she is “very remorseful.” He said Storro was still being interviewed by detectives during a press conference on Thursday. Police had been seeking a black woman with a ponytail after Storro described the alleged attack. She had said the woman asked her, “Hey, pretty girl, want something to drink?” then threw acid in her face. After the incident, Storro made several media appearances, but a planned interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” was canceled. She said she had received correspondence from people around the world concerned for her well being. She recounted details of the alleged attack at a news conference, with her head wrapped in bandages and her parents by her side. She said she wanted to know why the unnamed assailant had attacked her. Funds were set up for Storro at Umpquah and Riverview Community banks. Messages to the banks were not immediately returned Thursday. Vancouver police Commander Marla Schuman said detectives were working on a way to return any money donated to Storro. Cook said any decision to charge Storro with a crime would be left to the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Clark County Senior Deputy Prosecutor John Fairgrieve did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday. “She is extremely upset,” Schuman said. “In many ways, this got bigger than she expected.” Schuman was asked whether Storro will face a charge of filing a false police report, to which she responded: “At this point, yes, that would certainly fit.” A burn surgeon who operated on Storro said the substance thrown on her face was an acid as strong as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. Police said Thursday that they haven't yet identified the substance Storro used, nor did they find any evidence of acid in her home or car. http://www.wsbtv.com/nationalnews/25043587/detail.html added by: MotherForTruth

Acid Attack Victim in Vancouver WA Admits She Did it to Herself!

VANCOUVER, Wash — A woman who claimed she was the victim of an acid attack has admitted her injuries were self-inflicted, Vancouver, Wash., police said Thursday afternoon. Police Chief Clifford Cook said at an afternoon news conference that Bethany Storro, 28, told detectives the truth during an interview after discrepancies emerged in her story. Her interview was conducted after a search of her home, which she shares with her parents, police said. Interviews with her family are continuing, they said. Police will turn over their findings to prosecutors who will decide if charges will be filed against Storro, 28. They said they were not ready to discuss Storro's motivations. Storro is remorseful and in a “fragile mental state,” police said. Splash patterns and other parts of the story, like wearing sunglasses at night, led to the unraveling of Storro's story, Cook said. “All things that didn't add up to the circumstance,” Cook said. The revelation followed the cancellation of Storro's scheduled Thursday appearance on “Oprah.” Storro originally claimed a black woman with a ponytail threw acid in her face at night on Aug. 30 as she was celebrating a new job and had just bought a pair of sunglasses. Police said it was important to get the word of Storro's confession out immediately to assure the public knew that the Esther Park area of downtown Vancouver, scene of the alleged attack, was safe.
