Pregnant Wife: Husband’s Last Act Saved Me and Baby

(Sept. 13) — Brian Wood's last act was a selfless effort to save the life of his wife and his unborn child. “It breaks my heart and it also fills me with gratefulness,” a weeping Erin Wood, 31, told NBC's “Today” show this morning. “If it would have been a head-on crash, we both would have been killed and our baby,” she said. Brian Wood, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene Sept. 3 after an oncoming SUV careened across the center line on Whidbey Island in Washington state, and hurtled over the roof of Wood's 2004 Suburban. His wife was in the passenger seat. The North Vancouver, B.C., couple's first child is due in early November. Her husband of five years slammed on the brakes and swerved hard to the right, ensuring that he would take the brunt of the impact, his wife said. She had been dozing and woke to see the Chevy Blazer racing toward them. She suffered a banged head and a black eye, which was still visible today, but is otherwise fine. The unborn baby boy was unharmed, she said. Two passengers in the back seat of the truck were also killed. Last week, prosecutors charged the driver, 20-year-old Jordyn Weichert, with three counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault, the Whidbey News Times reported. Authorities at the scene found heroin, cocaine, marijuana and a handgun in the truck, according to court documents, local media reported. Weichert had been pulling off her sweatshirt when she asked front-seat passenger to steer for her, the Vancouver Sun said. They then lost control of the Blazer. Authorities are mulling charges against the passenger, Seattle television station KOMO reported. “Physically, I'm doing pretty well,” Erin Wood said today. “I'm not coping well. I don't think you can cope well in a situation like this.” http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/wife-says-husband-brian-woods-last-act-sav… |htmlws-sb-n|dl1|sec1_lnk3|170296 added by: MotherForTruth

13 yr old motorcycle racer killed at Grand Prix Race.

The U.S Grand Prix Racers Union said Monday that it plans to review its safety measures after the death of a 13-year-old motorcycle rider. Chief steward Stewart Aitken-Cade said series officials will discuss what happened in Sunday’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and possible ways— including new age limits—to prevent fatalities in a sport where teenage competitors are the norm. A formal investigation, however, is not planned. AdChoices “I don’t believe there are grounds for anything drastic,” Aitken-Cade said in a phone interview. “That doesn’t mean we’re not going to look at anything that we can do to prevent something like this from happening again. This is the first accident we’ve had like this in nine years, and that’s a tremendous safety record.” Peter Lenz of Vancouver, Wash., died Sunday after he fell off his motorcycle during a warm-up lap and was run over by a 12-year-old rider from Flushing, N.Y. Lenz is the youngest driver or rider to be killed at the 101-year-old Indianapolis Motor Speedway and, series officials said, he was the first rider to be killed in their series. Autopsy results released Monday confirmed Lenz died of multiple blunt force trauma. The 12-year-old rider, Xavier Zayat, was not injured but did not race. Aitken-Cade said the boy and his family left the pits after the crash. When Lenz fell off his bike, still photos show him sitting on the track with his arms raised. A few moments later, Aitken-Cade and speedway officials both confirmed, Lenz stood up and started waving his arms and that’s when Zayat hit him. “You want to make yourself as visible as possible, and that’s when you hope the safety lessons kick in,” Aitken-Cade said. “Most racing schools teach that it is safer to stay down if there are bikes flying around, but there area some different schools of thought on that.” Aitken-Cade did not say either rider was at fault. The speedway does have video of the accident but will not release it. Track workers, Zayat and his family were all offered counseling at the speedway, and Aitken-Cade promised Monday to provide whatever help the families need. The race series features some remarkably young riders. The series requires riders to submit a resume with at least two years of racing experience and results. Aitken-Cade said the series must verify both the starts and the finishes before a rider can compete. No riders younger than 12 are permitted to race on 125cc bikes, and that age limit jumps to 15 for the 250cc bikes. “Twelve, that’s as low as we’ll go on that—with the proven experience,” Aitken-Cade said. “We can’t just have a kid off the street that decides he wants to be the next MotoGP star to come in and race. We will not allow that.” Asked if the series would consider raising those age limits, Aitken-Cade said: “We’ll look at all aspects of this.” The ages of the two boys involved in Sunday’s crash raised questions about whether riders who aren’t even old enough to obtain a driver’s license should be racing vehicles that can top 120 mph. Yet there is a long list of stars who were racing as young teens or preteens. Three-time Indy winner Helio Castroneves started competing in go-karts at age 14. IndyCar’s Danica Patrick started racing at age 10 and even left the U.S. to compete in Europe as a teen. Four-time Cup champ Jeff Gordon was driving Quarter Midgets at age 5, and two-time Cup winner Tony Stewart raced go-karts at age 7. The motorcycle series seem an even younger arena. Americans Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP world champ, and Ben Spies, the Indy MotoGP pole winner, each started racing at age 5. “With youth sports, whether it’s football, basketball, soccer, water sports or whatever, there are injuries from time to time and there are fatalities from time to time,” speedway spokesman Fred Nation said. “But when you have them in an organized sport, in a controlled environment and safety people around, we think that’s a lot safer than having kids running around on four-wheelers through the woods. So we’re comfortable in supporting youth motorsports.” added by: onemalefla

Jimmy Fallon, Betty White Earn Our Alternate Emmys

MTV News picks the truly award-worthy moments — and the massive fails. By Gil Kaufman Jimmy Fallon at the 2010 Emmy Awards Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Getty Images Sunday night’s Emmy Awards were full of unforgettable moments and thrilling first-time wins for the casts and brilliant minds behind “Modern Family,” “Breaking Bad” and “Glee.” But because there’s no Emmy Award for the Emmy broadcast itself, MTV News decided to sprinkle a bit more Hollywood pixie dust on Sunday night’s winners and losers with our own nods to the show highlights. Instant Viral-Video Hit : Host Jimmy Fallon didn’t knock it out of the park, but his opening musical tribute to “Glee,” set to the tune of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” became an overnight viral hit. Social-Networking Fail : Fallon promised to take the Emmys into the future with some Twitter bits, but his introductions of presenters courtesy of viewer tweets fell flat nearly every time. Best Name That Totally Sounds Like It Was Made Up : Bucky Gunts. We were totally with comedian Ricky Gervais when he said he hoped the director of the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics with the vaguely porn-y sounding name would win his category. Worst Use of a Prop : Gervais provided many moments of hilarity during his time onstage (go back and listen to the Mel Gibson bit), but perhaps the night’s most awkward moment came after his rant about how, unlike at the Golden Globes, there’s no booze at the Emmys. He rectified that situation by sending waiters out into the audience with a variety of microbrews for the attendees. Things got a bit weird, though, when former “Friends” star Matthew Perry, who has spent time in rehab, had to politely decline a bottle of suds. Think It, But Don’t Say It Award : Definitely goes to three-time Emmy winner Edie Falco for joking after she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in “Nurse Betty”: “I’m not funny.” Guess who else doesn’t think you are? All of the other women in the category. Best Unexpected Cameo by the Subject of a TV Movie You’d Never Heard Of : Admit it, you got a bit misty when the spunky inspiration and namesake for “Temple Grandin” stood up during David Strathairn’s acceptance speech and showed off her lady rancher outfit and later took the stage with her Hollywood doppelg

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart Pics Renew Romance Rumors

New grainy photos emerge online that seem to show the ‘Twilight’ stars kissing. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (file) Photo: Getty Images Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart haven’t even stepped foot yet on the “Breaking Dawn” set and already rumors of their romance have kicked up again. Last week, a photo of Pattinson apparently “nuzzling” Stewart’s neck surfaced . And this week, some fuzzy pics of them maybe possibly locking lips have hit the Web. Pattinson visited the newly blond Stewart on the Montreal set of “On the Road,” where the photos were reportedly snapped. While the “nuzzling” photo could also be interpreted as Pattinson trying to whisper something to Stewart, the latest pics look a lot more intimate. The photo of the reported lip-lock found its way on Celebuzz.com along with several other photos, seemingly taken the same night, that clearly show the two hanging out. This isn’t the first time Twilighters have wondered about photographic evidence of a Pattinson-Stewart romance. Last summer, the pair was spotted together at a Kings of Leon concert . Then they were snapped holding hands as they made their way through an airport in Paris. Neither Stewart nor Pattinson has ever ‘fessed up to an off-screen romance, and even their “Twilight” co-stars claim to know little about the true nature of their relationship. “I never know anything,” Elizabeth Reaser told MTV News about the duo earlier this year. “I’m also, like, the clueless person on set that has no idea what’s happening. And I think I like it that way.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Breaking Dawn.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Black Bloc Tactics- To Clear the Way

Vandalism a central part of anarchists’ tactics Black Bloc tactics seen as a method to clear way for other protest groups to state their cases The black-clad vandals who fanned out across Toronto’s downtown are relatively foreign to the city’s streets, but their Black Bloc methods and motivations have been deployed around the world for decades. But the shattered storefronts and graffiti slogans left in their wake do not answer the most fundamental of questions: Who are the ruffians and what do they want? The individuals who carry on the anarchist Black Bloc tradition today congregate through online forums, newsletters and small conventions. They are yoga teachers, soup-kitchen volunteers, community organizers and university students from Southern Ontario, Quebec and points further afield. They bristle at the anarchist label – they bristle at most things, for that matter – and reject their common portrayal as an ignorant pack of angry young men. “We don’t just crawl up from the sewers from protests,” says Chris Bowen, part of the anarchist hip-hop duo Test Their Logik and one of the movement’s most visible proponents of property damage. “We are not violent people. I’m filled with love – love for this planet, not for pacifism and the status quo.” It was difficult to see the love in images of smashed Starbucks windows and burning squad cars. Many, including Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair and Mayor David Miller, lamented the violence and promised retribution. But when your goal is to “smash capitalism,” violence takes on a very narrow definition. Mr. Bowen, a yoga teacher by day, insists property damage is necessary to draw the world’s eyes. “When buildings are destroyed and no one is hurt – who cares?” said Mr. Bowen during a protest earlier this week. “It’s a broken window, not a life. The violence comes from the companies that are targeted. They are wrecking the environment; they are wrecking lives.” Mr. Bowen was scooped up during mass arrests of demonstrators on Sunday morning, joining the ranks of more than 600 detained by police. The number of protesters participating in Black Bloc tactics this week were not expected to exceed the roughly 400 who turned out for the 2001 Summit of the Americas held in Quebec City. “If you look at our movement before and after 9/11, it dwindled,” Mr. Bowen said. “People got scared and left.” One of those alleged organizers, Alex Hundert, arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit mischief during an early-morning police raid Saturday, recently wrote a treatise at rabble.ca defending destructive Black Bloc tactics used during the 2010 Winter Olympics. He claimed that Black Bloc acts as “a wrecking ball” that clears the way for other protest groups to state their various cases. Smashing windows at Hudson’s Bay Co., for instance, “actually opened up space for Canadians to stop and think about the colonial history of HBC,” Mr. Hundert wrote. Mr. Hundert is part of a large contingent of demonstrators affiliated with the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Centre for Social Justice. Other protesters in police custody hail from Montreal, Guelph, Ont., Vancouver and the United States. “They are your co-workers and neighbours, your teachers or students, your relatives,” said one anarchist organizer who asked not to be identified. “If it seems they only appear when an event like the G20 takes place, it’s because the rest of the time they are not wearing masks.” Toronto Police have been investigating Black Bloc strategies for months. On Saturday night, Chief Blair vowed to root them out. “There is no sanctuary from responsibility and accountability for their criminal acts,” he said. In a press release Sunday he urged the public to submit any images they have of “the small group of criminals, whose only motivations are violence and destruction, who have appalled those who came to express their views in a peaceful manner.” Many Black Bloc demonstrators arrived in Toronto as part of tight-knit affinity groups – clusters of friends who spread ideas and tactics in small meetings to avoid police detection – to answer a general callout by the Southern Ontario Anarchist Resistance and the Toronto Community Mobilization Network. They’ve been staying on numerous couches and carpets throughout the city. “We have friends willing to open their doors here and all across the land,” Mr. Bowen said. “They have my back, and I have theirs.” During the destruction on Saturday, affinity groups employed tactics they say were popularized during historical uprisings such as the Boston Tea Party. Dressed in black, affinity groups would dart from within masses of peaceful protesters to smash windows and paint anarchist slogans. Minutes later, they would change into light-coloured garb and rejoin the crowds, relying on the anonymity of the throng for camouflage. Online explanations of Black Bloc encourage this shape-shifting approach while discouraging violent confrontations with police so that participants can avoid arrest. These tactics are hardly secret, easily accessed through popular anarchist websites such as crimethinc.com and theanarchistlibrary.org. Even with hundreds of detained demonstrators, the anarchists insist their movement is snowballing. “Look here, look at the reaction to austerity measures in Greece, look at the anger surrounding BP in the Gulf,” Mr. Bowen said. “The whole global economy is coming down. We are going to kick it until it breaks.” added by: animalia_libero

"November Days" Filmed By Bike, Distributed By Bike

Photo still from Field Guide to November Days. “Field Guide to November Days” is a new film by Portland filmmakers Mary DeFreese and Nick Peterson that I really want to see. Not just because its two protagnists live a biking life (and the directors shot most of the film by bike). It’s also because DeFreese and Peterson are taking their 10-city film tour to show the movie at art film theaters, by bicycles. They started on June 10 from Vancouver, B.C. and will end in San Diego July 10. “There have been some scary things,” said DeFreese of the cycling film tour thus far. “In Tacoma, I thought someone … Read the full story on TreeHugger
