Fabolous Champions Meek Mill’s ‘Young Energy’

Don’t miss Fabolous, Maino and Skillz on ‘RapFix Live’ Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Fabolous Photo: MTV News Fabolous has collaborated with a ton of MCs in his 10-plus years in the rap game. From Jay-Z and Lil Wayne to Rick Ross and Kanye West, Loso has spit with the best of them, but a feature with newcomer Meek Mill has the veteran Brooklyn lyricist especially excited. Fab, who will be a guest on Wednesday’s (January 4) “RapFix Live,” invited Meek Mill to jump on “You Don’t Know ‘Bout It,” a track off of his recently released There Is No Competition III mixtape . “I think Meek is, like, young energy, what hip-hop needs,” Fabolous told MTV News last month. “I always like to see new, young energy come into the game.” Meek hails from Philadelphia and has made his name as an artist on Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, but it isn’t just Mill’s skills on the mic that Fab admires. Loso also appreciates the “I’mma Boss” rapper’s ability to overcome the hardships he faced in the street. “It shows a person from the same walk of life you come from reaching something that they wanted to do against the odds of what could’ve happened,” Fabolous said of Meek’s past. “I know a little bit of his story where he went to jail and stuff like that, so it’s good to see him actually doing something that he’s pursuing and being successful at that. I like that as well, just even being able to collaborate with that.” Catch Fabolous, Maino and Skillz on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. The New York Knicks Scoop Up Veteran Cavs Point Gaurd Baron Davis To Help ‘Melo And ‘Mare

This shortened NBA season looks like it may just be exciting after all… After using the amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups, the Knicks have been hunting a new starting point guard. Mike Bibby recently signed, but that’s not exactly the answer. Baron Davis was amnestied by the Cavs and cleared waivers, opening up the opportunity for him to sign anywhere. And that anywhere has turned out to be the Knicks, according to ESPN.com and confirmed by Ken Berger of CBSSports.com With the Knicks being well over the cap, the deal had to be for the veteran minimum or the “mini mid-level” the Knicks have. According to SI.com, it is indeed for the $2.5 mini mid-level. Which is why this makes a lot of sense for New York. It’s a low risk, potentially high value signing. Davis still has a lot of game left, it just comes down to motivation and health. And with him being in New York playing on a solid Knicks team, you have to think he’s going to be ready. He’s dealing with a back injury though, and could be out up to 8-10 weeks. However, after being amnetied by the Cavs, that timetable miraculously dropped to 4-6. Other teams reportedly going after Davis were the Heat and Lakers, so the Knicks landing their target to likely start once he’s healthy is a big move. Not to say Davis is going to be a star or anything, but considering the options right now for New York, Davis is about as good as they could do in their situation. Bibby is a nice veteran backup, Toney Douglas isn’t a point guard and Iman Shumpert is mostly an unknown. Davis could at least step in and handle the offense. Knicks fans, hate it or love it?!?! George Takei Jokes About The Twilight Saga: It’s SO Bad!

Will George Takei live long enough to prosper after making the following comments public? In order to settle a feud between one Star Trek icon (William Shatner) and on Star Wars veteran (Carrie Fisher), this veteran actor has taken to the Internet and posted a message that he hopes will bring both sides together: let’s all hate on Twilight instead! “What’s needed today now more than ever is star peace, for there is an ominous, mutual threat to all science fiction. It’s called Twilight and it is really, really bad,” says Takei. George Takei: Down with Twilight! The actor even gets rather specific in calling our Robert Pattinson , Kristen Stewart and company, adding: “Gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie or epic battles. In its place, we have vampires that sparkle, moan and go to high school. Now, I’m not above mixing in a little sex appeal to spice up the fantasy, but sci-fi fans be warned, there are no great stories, characters or profound life lessons to be found in Twilight… In Twilight, the only message that rings through loud and clear is: ‘Does my boyfriend like me?’ “Let us band together to combat this mutual threat.” Powerful words. Now you tell us: Which movie franchise is best?

Best EDM Artists Of 2011

MTV counts down the top 10 electronic dance music artists of the year. By Akshay Bhansali and Adam Stewart deadmau5 Photo: Getty Images Maybe you were at the grocery store when you found yourself singing along to Afrojack’s “Take Over Control” for the hundredth time. Or maybe it was when Martin Solveig’s “Hello” was suddenly on repeat on your iPod. Whatever your moment was, it’s fair to say the American appetite for electronic dance music surged in 2011, bringing “the rave” to radio and festivals, touching every U.S. city (big and small). Even Grammy voters took notice this year, nominating Skrillex for Best New Artist and in four other categories. Afrojack, David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Benny Benassi put up mainstream, chart-topping bangers. Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival and Miami’s Ultra Music Festival saw record attendance, and dance music’s biggest stars headlined a stage at every major mainstream festival: Lollapalooza, Coachella, SXSW, Austin City Limits. We’ve been covering the movement, but this year we tapped some of our EDM pros to commemorate a seminal year for the genre. MTV News’ Akshay Bhansali and Adam Stewart, MTV Coordinator of Music & Talent Rawley Bornstein and MTV World Music Director Micah McKinney sat down for a roundtable discussion — moderated by MTV News’ Sway Calloway — about the biggest players this year and crowned our top 10. Below, we reveal #10 through #3. Stick with MTV as we reveal our final two at 4:59 p.m. ET on Monday (December 12). Who will be named the Best EDM Artist of 2011? 10. Martin Solveig When Irv Gotti stopped by MTV News’ “RapFix Live” in October, he joked, “We’re just one record away from Kanye or Jay [being like]: [ sings hook to Solveig’s ‘Hello’ ] ‘I just came to say hello — Hov!’ ” Gotti was kidding, but it’s true. Rap dudes beware: Songs like “Hello” and guys like Martin have seen such widespread success that the hip-hop industry, which has long enjoyed club and radio dominance, is shook. In addition to being a technically superior producer and DJ, Solveig has also proven to the world that he has a sense of humor. His “Smash” video series — including “Hello,” “Initial S.H.E,” “Ready 2 Go” and “Big in Japan” — are some of the funniest and most well-produced clips of any genre. Kudos to Martin and his “manager” Lafaille for making us laugh and dance in 2011. 9. Ti

‘Expendables 2’ Stuntmen Involved In On-Set Accident ID’d

Following the death of one stuntman and the injury of another, the film’s production company releases a statement clarifying previous reports. By Kevin P. Sullivan Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables” Photo: Lionsgate Nu Image/Millennium Films has identified the stuntman who died on the Bulgarian set of “The Expendables 2” on October 27. Stuntman Kun Lieu was killed in an on-set explosion . The production company behind the all-star action sequel released a statement Tuesday (November 1) clarifying previous reports and updating the status of the second stuntman injured in the explosion. The second stuntman, Nuo Sun, was also injured in the explosion and was reportedly in critical condition when reports of the accident hit late last Thursday. A new statement released by Nu/Image Millennium Films updated his status, and Sun is now in stable condition in a hospital in Munich, where he was transported to undergo treatment by specialists. The statement also corrected claims made by Bulgarian newspapers that inaccurately identified the stuntmen as the doubles for Sylvester Stallone and Jet Li and asserted that the those stuntmen were nowhere near the set at the time of the incident. The production company also reconfirmed previous reports that neither the stars nor director Simon West were present for the accident. The full statement from Nu Image/Millennium Film follows: “Our deepest condolences go to the family of Kun Lieu. His passing is tragic. Our sympathies also go to Nuo Sun, who was seriously injured as a result of the same explosion. We have been informed his condition has stabilized. He has been transported to Munich, Germany, where he is receiving top medical care from the best specialists,” the statement reads. “Regrettably, Bulgarian language newspapers have incorrectly reported that stunt doubles for Jet Li and Sylvester Stallone were involved in the accident. This is absolutely false and inaccurate. At the time of the accident neither Li’s or Stallone’s stuntmen were on or near the Second Unit set, nor were any of the film’s main actors, director Simon West or any of the Main Unit crew. “Only Second Unit filming has been temporarily suspended and will resume shortly. The filmmakers continue to work with authorities investigating this accident. Main Unit production has not been interrupted and continues as scheduled.” “Expendables 2” is scheduled to hit theaters next August and stars Stallone, Li, Jason Statham , Bruce Willis , Arnold Schwarzenegger , Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme . Justin Bieber Got Boyz II Men’s Advice During Mistletoe

Under the Mistletoe collaborators tell teen singer, ‘You’ve got to have your wits about you,’ during ‘Fa La La’ recording session. By Jocelyn Vena Shawn Stockman and Justin Bieber Photo: LiveWire Entertainment Justin Bieber and Boyz II Men are singing “Fa La La” on the young singer’s new Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe, released Tuesday (November 1). When the group hit the studio with Bieber in September, the recording session made headlines, and the moment marked a triumph for the teen star. The Boyz have been heroes for the singer since he was just a kid growing up in Canada. So, when they all went in to work on the track, Shawn Stockman and the guys had some advice for the 17-year-old as he continues on his path of pop superstardom. “He’s a fan of our music,” Stockman told MTV News. “So him being in the studio and everything, when we were singing the parts, and he’s bugging out, and we got a chance to talk to him and give him some brotherly type advice.” What advice did the veteran group — celebrating its anniversary this month with the album Twenty — share with the teen? “[We] just gave him some wisdom to know how to keep things going from a mental level [and] not just doing this [to do this] because people can get caught up in the success and all the hype and the girls screaming and the money and all the other good stuff, and you’ve got to have your wits about you,” Stockman said. “And make sure that you don’t want to have this legacy of being this brat … you don’t want that. You want longevity, not only in this business, but life as well.” Stockman said Bieber can expect many highs, but there will also be lows, and he wants to make sure the young star can weather all of those moments. “There’s going to be ups, and there’s going to be downs … you’re not always going to be on top, so you have to build certain things to cushion the fall a little when it does happen,” he said. “Because it will happen. It happens to everyone; no one’s exempt.” Under the Mistletoe features original holiday tunes by Bieber, as well as reimaginings of classic tunes, like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas.” Bieber is joined by Carey as well as Boyz II Men, Usher, Busta Rhymes and the Band Perry on the album. Drake Insisted On Recording Only With 40 For Take Care

‘Not only would I record it with 40, but I might take the beat apart with 40,’ Drake tells MTV News of Noah ’40’ Shebib. By Rob Markman Drake Photo: MTV News When you’ve made an impact with your music the way Drake has, you earn the right to do things your way. For the Toronto MC, that meant recording his sophomore album, Take Care, in his native city. Not only that, he insisted on only recording with his producer/engineer and longtime friend Noah “40” Shebib . So even when working with producers like Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, for example, the veteran hitmakers would have to give Drake the creative freedom to rework a track with his hometown guy. “The majority of producers, not only would I record it with 40, but I might take the beat apart with 40 and add elements that weren’t there before that just because I need a consistent thread,” Drake told MTV News of his Take Care recording process. Drake looks to add to Take Care what he felt Thank Me Later lacked: continuity. ” Thank Me Later was just song, song, song, song, song, whereas So Far Gone was a consistent thread,” the Young Money MC said of his debut album in relation to his breakout mixtape. “It was a story to me. And Thank Me Later, I sort of didn’t have enough time mentally to piece together a story. It’s very tedious.” Call it a case of being his own worst critic, as last year’s Thank Me Later was met with favorable reviews and was commercially successful as well. Still, Drake aimed to tweak his creative process with his next album, due November 15. “With that being said, I also need sonic consistency, so I need that presence in a Timbaland beat or someone’s beat,” he said. “There’s times when I really can’t even use someone else’s production because as much as I know that joint can be crazy, I want a consistent sound.” 40, who has amassed quite an impressive discography himself (DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One,” Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” and Alicia Keys’ “Un-Thinkable”) provides Drake with the sonic continuity that he seeks, whether he is producing a record, engineering the session or mixing down the final product. This is a formula that has worked most recently on Drizzy’s latest Take Care single, “Make Me Proud,” with Nicki Minaj. The song was produced by Canadian producer T-Minus but tweaked by Shebib and Drake. “He knows if I like a beat, he’ll send it over to us and allow us to maybe creatively beef it up or strip it down or add one thing,” Drake said. Rihanna ‘Can’t Wait’ For Fans To Hear New Album

RiRi and her ‘Cheers’ producers tweet about recording album number six. By James Montgomery Rihanna Photo: James Devaney/WireImage She may still be wringing singles from her platinum-plus Loud album, but Rihanna is already prepping her sixth studio effort. And, from the sound of things, it’ll be finished soon. RiRi took to her Twitter account early Thursday morning (September 15) to confirm that, yes, sessions for album number six are already under way. “I can’t wait to start filling u guys in on some details!” she exclaimed. Rihanna punctuated that tweet with a “*Zips lips*,” meaning that, for now at least, she’s done talking about the project. Talk of new music began on Wednesday, when the singer retweeted a post from production duo the Runners (Rihanna’s “California King Bed” and “Cheers”), who wrote , “Shout out to @alexdelicata for makin history with us. Wait till they hear this new @rihanna song.” But in late July, producer Verse Simmonds — one half of the studio duo known as the Jugganauts, who produced Rihanna’s hit “Man Down” — talked to MTV News’ Mixtape Daily about the new album, saying that Ri was close to completing work on the disc. “From what I understand, she’s is closing the album up now, and we did two records for her that she really, really loved, and I’m really excited about them as well,” Simmonds said. “They are records that we wrote and produced as the Jugganauts.” Simmonds said he was “99.999 percent” sure that he and production partner Sak Pase’s contributions would make the final cut, and while he wouldn’t elaborate on what Rihanna’s new album would sound like, he did hint that it’ll move in a direction quite different from “Man Down.” “Because we … as producers, as artists, we try to always come with something different, a whole new sound,” he explained. Of course, finishing up her album isn’t the only thing on Rihanna’s plate these days. During Wednesday night’s “The X Factor” launch party in Los Angeles, Simon Cowell confirmed to KIIS FM that she would also serve as a guest judge on the show, saying, “You’re going to see her.” Related Artists Rihanna
