The Oscar-winning actor’s latest skin-crawling, onscreen turn, “The Rite,” topped the Friday box office. The film, which is based on real-life events and stars Hopkins as an unconventional exorcist, debuted with $5.3 million. When MTV News sat down with Sir Hopkins recently, the veteran star admitted he has a gift for freaking out fans. “I know how to do those parts,” he said. “Not because I’m scary, but because I know how to scare people. … It’s a question of being quiet and not overplaying it,” he explained. “You let the script and the audiences do the work for you. You don’t have to play evil.” Behind “The Rite” is last week’s box-office winner, “No Strings Attached. Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman’s portrayal of “sex friends” who shrug off the possibility of a relationship in favor of casual lovin,’ scored $4.3 million. Friday’s earnings kick the film’s total haul to just over $30 million. Jason Statham’s latest firepower-heavy flick ,”The Mechanic,” came in third place. Roger Ebert: Before and After Plastic Sugery Pics

During his battle with thyroid cancer, Roger Ebert says he “studiously avoided looking in a mirror.” That’s because the movie critic lost the bottom half of jaw his jaw to the disease. But a two-year process has now resulted in a silicone prosthesis that Ebert debuted this week, one that he’ll wear during upcoming TV appearances. Below, right, the veteran reporter shows off his new look: “I will wear the prosthesis on the new television show – that’s not to fool anyone, because my appearance is widely known,” he says. “It will be a pleasant reminder of the person I was for 64 years.” Ebert Presents at the Movies debuts tonight on PBS. It will feature Christy Lemire and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky reviewing films and Roger discussing new films and classics.

Neil Patrick Harris Regrets Blasting Soap Star On Twitter

Actor calls Eric Braeden a ‘D-bag’ after soap star drops out of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ cameo. By Mawuse Ziegbe Neil Patrick Harris and Eric Braeden Photo: Getty Images “How I Met Your Mother” star Neil Patrick Harris recently stirred up some offscreen drama related to the show, but later regretted starting the flap. The controversy began when Harris tweeted some unsavory comments about soap star Eric Braeden, who was slated to tape a cameo as character Robin Scherbatsky’s father. However, Harris took offense after “The Young and the Restless” actor dropped out of the appearance. “Eric Braeden is a D-Bag. the actor, (Robin’s dad) agreed to a cameo, then last night bailed, saying the part wasn’t ‘substantial’ enough,” Harris tweeted on Friday. Braeden shot back in an interview with Entertainment Weekly later that day, shrugging off Harris’ gripe and explaining he ditched the cameo due to an increased workload. “I really don’t know who that fellow is. He’s a guy who stars in that series,” Braeden laughed to EW. “It’s very unfortunate. First of all, I came back from hip surgery. I was off for three weeks. I’ve doubled my work, 30 to 50 pages a day for me, alone. Everyone knows that I’m exhausted. I was not about to appear on a show for two lines, because that’s what it amounted to.” Braeden added that he returned to the show because he enjoyed his first cameo in 2008 and “the cast and crew and producers couldn’t have been nicer.” However, the veteran actor appeared to view Harris’ comments as arrogance. “His choice of words bothered me,” Braeden added. “It seems to me like a young whippersnapper, having seen himself on a few covers, who’s received a few awards, is now suddenly suffering from the first signs of hubris. I’ve been in the business for 50 years. I’ve seen people come and go and I’m still here.” Ultimately, Braeden maintained that he had no plans to escalate the drama, saying,”If he is a worthy adversary, he’d better not cross my path. I will let bygones be bygones.” Later, Harris returned to Twitter to explain he just had a visceral reaction to someone bashing his beloved “Mother.” “Now I feel bad for the D-bag comment,” he wrote . “Don’t know the guy personally. I’m just fiercely protective of our show.” What do you think of Harris’ comments? Let us know in the comments below!

‘Love And Other Drugs’ Co-Stars Have Chemistry On (And Off) Screen

‘Just wait, she’s going to say something amazing,’ Jake Gyllenhaal gushes about Anne Hathaway during MTV News interview. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Much of the advance buzz about Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Love and Other Drugs” has centered on the film’s nudity — the co-stars bare some serious skin in a few key moments — but the actors’ chemistry is another important element in the movie. Actors will typically declare how well the cast and crew got along on set when promoting a movie, whether it’s true or not. But in the case of Hathaway and Gyllenhaal, it seemed obvious the two share a genuine mutual affection, as MTV News learned when we caught up with them to discuss their romantic comedy, which opens Wednesday. Since Hathaway and Gyllenhaal have collaborated onscreen before, we asked what it was like to do press together. “[She’s] annoying,” Gyllenhaal joked about having to sit side-by-side for interviews all day. Then, turning serious, he added, “She’s so dope at press. Can we talk about this for a second? She’s got a rare talent at ‘pressing’ it.” “How dare you set me up at the beginning of an interview like that?” Hathaway interjected in mock protest. “How dare you!” “Your mind is going to be blown by this chick,” Gyllenhaal continued. “Wait, he’s about to say the smartest thing you’ve ever heard!” Hathaway countered. “No, just wait, she’s going to say something amazing and you’re going to be moved, you’re going to cry,” Gyllenhaal enthused. “There’s going to be something you’ve never felt before.” The onetime “Brokeback Mountain” co-stars then began talking over each other, spouting off various compliments. “No, Jake’s great. Jake’s awesome,” Hathaway said as Gyllenhaal echoed the warm fuzzy sentiments. “She’s so talented. She’s at the top of her game. Everything about her is so special,” he said. “It’s so nice to know that someone really has your back,” she said. “She’s so beautiful right now,” he said, which got Hathaway’s attention. “Oh, thank you,” she said, turning to her co-star. “I think you’re just really handsome!” “Her body is gorgeous in the film,” Gyllenhaal continued. “Well, that’s too far,” Hathaway said.
