Tim Burton Has A Big 2010 Thanks To ‘Alice In Wonderland,’ MOMA Exhibit

And that’s why the veteran director is one of the entertainers we’re most thankful for this year. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tim Burton Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In Hollywood, the land of superlatives and flagrant puffery, the term “visionary” is thrown about too casually and bestowed upon flash-in-the-pan acts that all too often come and go with the change of seasons. However, one artist for whom the descriptor is fitting, whose films truly transport audiences to other dimensions and offer a childlike sense of wonder, is director Tim Burton. And this year, thanks to “Alice in Wonderland,” which brought in an estimated $1 billion at the box office ($334 million domestic, $690 million international) in addition to 20-plus years of unique and exciting filmmaking, Burton is one of the folks in the entertainment world for whom we’re most thankful. As part of MTV’s Thankful Week, we had the pleasure of chatting with Burton about the stress and eventual success of “Alice,” if we’ll be seeing a sequel or a musical adaptation on the Great White Way and a few hints about upcoming projects. MTV : Tim, every year here at MTV News, we select a few people we’re most thankful for. And you’ve had quite a year with the phenomenal success of “Alice in Wonderland” and a retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art . Tim Burton : Wow. Well, that’s quite an honor. Thank you. MTV : Did it feel like this year was a special one? Burton : Yeah, it was interesting. The MOMA show was very special, and then going to the Cannes film festival and “Alice” — it was a lot of stuff going on. It was a special year for me, definitely. MTV : Were you a little more reflective than usual with the MOMA show? Burton : Yeah, I think so. It kind of forced me to look at myself, which I don’t do very often. I even avoid mirrors as I walk by them. It was a bit of a surprise in a good way. It did make me more reflective. You know, as you go on in life, there are less and less surprises — especially nice surprises, so it’s really, really great to feel surprised in a good way. MTV : We spoke a few times when you were working on “Alice,” and frankly, you seemed stressed. Burton : I was really stressed. We were doing music to no images. It was terrifying. In a weird way, it was quite exciting too, because you never know with a film what it’s going to turn out to be. But this was just an extreme, extreme version of that. MTV : How did you feel about the 3-D debate that came with the film? Some criticized the conversion to 3-D you used. Burton : Right, yeah, but that was kind of a funny argument because the thing is, we’ll shoot what? It’s not like we were doing motion-capture or we had sets. There was nothing to shoot. We planned for it. It was kind of a created argument in a way. Everybody likes to have a celebrity death match. Who will win? Things have more shades to it than that. MTV : Right, because a lot of it became about you and James Cameron’s different approaches to 3-D. Burton : Yeah. They’re doing “Titanic” in 3-D . What, they’re going to go back and shoot it in 3-D? No. They’re going to do the same thing we did. MTV : Is Disney putting the pressure on for a sequel for “Alice”? Burton : No, they haven’t, which was smart of them. They saw that it was kind of its own thing. They didn’t push for it at all, which I thought was really amazing, and smart, and right. MTV : And you are content to leave the story where it is? Because you do leave an opening at the end … Burton : Yeah, but that’s what the material does to me, it leaves it open for you. It’s kind of like dreams. It leaves it open, as it should, for interpretation. It’s like I got a lot of pressure to do a sequel to “Nightmare [Before Christmas],” and I just didn’t want to do that, because some movies should just be left alone. I think it keeps their kind of spirit intact in a way. MTV : There’s been talk about adapting “Alice” into a Broadway show. Are you involved in that? Burton : I’m talking to them about that just because there was a seedling of an idea that I thought was interesting. I don’t know how far it will go, but it’s something. I’ve always kind of wanted to do something live onstage. I’m just going to explore it and see what happens. MTV : It sounds like you’ll be shooting “Dark Shadows” with Johnny Depp soon? Burton : Yeah, I’m working on the script, and, you know, it’s been kind of a long time coming, but I think I’m getting a script that I like. I don’t really like talking, because I’m not really sure what’s happening yet, but I’m excited about it. I think, yes, finally for me, it’s getting to be the right tone. MTV : Have you and Johnny talked specifically about his take on Barnabas Collins, the vampire at the center of the series? Burton : Yeah, we’ve been talking about it. I mean, he’s finishing up another movie, but we’ve had a couple of really good meetings. Yeah, you know, I’m excited. MTV : Have you started shooting “Frankenweenie” ? Burton : We just started a couple of shots. It ‘s good. We’ve got a pretty low budget, but I’m excited about it. We’ve got a couple of shots that are done. Yeah, it’s just starting. It’s great. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Britney Spears’ Ex-Bodyguard Defends Lawsuit

Fernando Flores tells TMZ he’s ‘standing up for what I believe is right.’ By Kelley L. Carter Britney Spears Photo: David Aguilera/ BuzzFoto/ FilmMagic A former bodyguard for pop superstar Britney Spears defended his sexual-harassment lawsuit Thursday (September 9), saying he’s “standing up for what I believe is right.” Fernando Flores, the bodyguard who alleged earlier this week that the pop singer repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances toward him and exposed her naked or near-naked body to him, gave a quick interview to TMZ outside his lawyer’s Orange County office. Spears, however, denied the allegations , posting a statement on her website saying that she and her attorneys believed the suit would be dismissed. “This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself,” the statement read. To Spears’ statement, Flores told the gossip website “if that’s what they think, then that’s what they think.” A dollar amount isn’t cited in the suit — which is posted on TMZ — but Flores is seeking damages based on the sexual-harassment incidents and for “intentional infliction of emotional distress.” Flores also alleged in the suit that Spears abused her children. In the suit, he said the 28-year-old had sex and engaged in violent arguments in front of her two young sons. Sources told TMZ that Flores’ accusations of child abuse (including an incident where he says Spears allegedly whipped one of her sons with a belt) were declared without merit by the Department of Children and Family Services. Mary J. Blige, T.I., Kid Rock Go Country For ‘Care’

It’s unclear what album leaked track might end up on. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. and Mary J. Blige Photo: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images Mary J. Blige is known as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, but the veteran singer has more range than a rifle. Blige’s country-tinged “Care,” featuring Kid Rock and T.I., leaked online Thursday (September 9.). The song includes a guitar-laden production and earnest lyrics about wanting to change the world but only having the ability to care. “I can’t stop the war, shelter the homeless, feed the poor,” Blige and Kid Rock sing together on the chorus, while T.I. ad-libs throughout the refrain. “I can’t walk on water, can’t save your sons and daughter/ I can’t change the world or make things fair, but the least I can do is care.” “For the life of me, I can’t see how the devil keeps enticing me,” Tip raps on the number. “All you see is a felon, but I know God can see what’s right in me.” In the past, Blige has worked with a host of artists in other genres, from Jay-Z to U2’s Bono to Luciano Pavarotti, but this is her first foray into country. As of press time, however, it’s unclear if the record will land on Blige’s next project. A representative for the singer has not responded to inquiries. Blige is hard at work on her forthcoming album; producer Swizz Beatz sent messages on Twitter saying he and Blige completed four songs together for her next project. In the meantime, Blige is set to go on tour next month with Jazmine Sullivan and newcomer Miguel. What do you think of Mary veering into country territory? Share your thoughts in the comments! Ice Cube Recruits Sons To Rhyme On I Am The West

‘They still ain’t better than me,’ Cube says of kids OMG and Doughboy. ‘But they dope.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Ice Cube Photo: MTV News Gangsta rap made Ice Cube do it, but the veteran rapper acknowledges that his sons have had a childhood far different from his own Los Angeles upbringing. So when he recruited his two boys — OMG and Doughboy — to appear on his upcoming album, I Am the West, Cube had to make sure the tracks they rapped on were a good fit. He ended up featuring them on the Bangladesh-produced “She Couldn’t Make It on Her Own” and “Y’all Know How I Am.” “When I heard the beat [on ‘She Couldn’t Make It on Her Own’], I wanted to do a song with my sons, and I felt like the beat feels young to me,” Cube told MTV News. “I didn’t want them to come out on something that really wasn’t their personality. Their personality, they ain’t from the ‘hood. They didn’t have to grow up like that, like I did. So I wanted them to do something that showed their personality. I put them on a track that wasn’t strictly a gangsta rap track, that was fun and something they could come off on.” OMG and Doughboy are following in the footsteps of other young artists who hope to shine on the mic like their famous fathers, including Cory Gunz (Peter Gunz), Justice (GZA) and Lil Eazy-E (Eazy-E) . The former N.W.A. star is a fan of his sons, naturally, but he said the pair still have some work to do to match his skills. “They dope,” he said of his offspring. “They still ain’t better than me, but they dope. I’m impressed. I’m really impressed by what they doing.” What do you think of Cube’s new music? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Ice Cube

‘Piranha 3D’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics cite ‘mayhem,’ ‘gore’ in new horror flick. By Eric Ditzian Jerry O’Connell in “Piranha 3D” Photo: Gene Page / Dimension What can a critic possibly say about a film whose director describes his creative approach thusly: “I understand why James Cameron in ‘Avatar’ didn’t want to make the 3-D gimmicky, and he was right. But we are making a piranha-attacking-spring-break movie, so we are going to go for the huge on-the-screen effects and fish attacking the audience.” That’s how Alexandre Aja explained “Piranha 3D” to us earlier this year. And his movie is either the type of cinematic experience you crave — buckets of blood, tons of silicone — or the type that you find emblematic of the unraveling of Western culture. Moviegoers in both camps should note that the film is not tracking particularly well and will be lucky to gross more than $10 million over the weekend. Yet the “Piranha 3D” reviews have been largely positive thus far; critics seem to understand that Aja wasn’t trying to make an awards-season darling (despite ). Check out what the pros are saying and decide whether or not this flick is for you. The Story “[T]here’s a lake packed with drunk hotties in bikinis they’re forever taking off. There are big piranha packs swarming. A few scientists stop by to throw in lines like ‘you’re not going to believe this.’ A few law enforcements types scream, ‘Get out of the water now.’ Mayhem everywhere, enough that the fake-blood and severed-limb budget was probably the film’s biggest expenditure. I’d try describing the gore, but words just can’t do justice to the damage a massive Mesozoic underbite, and the occasional outboard motor, can do.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Direction “Alexandre Aja, who worked his remake magic with 2006’s atmospheric ‘The Hills Have Eyes,’ gets it mainly right, assisted by a lively CG boost and a game cast that really gets into the spirit of things. … [He] exhibits little patience for such stuff as dramatic tension and tautly coiled suspense, and there are some undeniable choppy bits— but he never loses sight of the potential fun factor laid out in Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg’s script. Nor does he stint on the gore, with a terrific assist by the veteran effects duo of Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, who truly outdo themselves with all those nibbled body parts, as well as added bite by creature designer Neville Page.” — Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter The Performances “The cast knows exactly what they’re doing, and Elizabeth Shue and Adam Scott both walk away winners. Scott in particular seems to be having indecent fun striking a few action hero poses and reacting with droll alarms to the monster fish. Christopher Lloyd shows up for what is really just an extended cameo, but every line out of his mouth gets a laugh just because of the general lack of Lloyd in our lives lately. Ving Rhames doesn’t have a lot to do, but he goes down swinging. O’Connell may never be able to convincingly shake off the scumbag after the enthusiastic way he and his cameraman (Paul Scheer of ‘Human Giant’ fame) ply their trade and earn their punishment. Even the young cast, led by Steven R. McQueen and Jessica Szohr, acquit themselves as well as possible considering how generally thin the material is.” — Drew McWeeny, HitFix The Gore “There’s no way you can talk about the film without going gore gaga over the main attack that hits during the wet t-shirt contest. I’m relatively positive that this film used more blood than any film in film history. I’m thinking elevator scene in ‘The Shining’ … times 3,000. More than that though was the crazy awesome gore by [effects studio] K.N.B. There’s crazy awesome make-up effects here that just don’t stop. For every moment that the CG fish get on your nerves, there’s six gore gags by K.N.B. that are just epic.” — Harry Knowles, Ain’t It Cool News The Bottom Line “[H]ere, in the best/worst traditions of ’70s exploitation cinema, are flesh-eating fishy gore, lip-smacking nudity and lots of laugh-out-loud silliness. If you’re looking for the anti-establishment message found in the John Sayles’ scripted, Roger Corman-produced ‘Jaws’ rip-off, you will be disappointed. However, the re-make’s cheesy, eye-popping 3-D effects — flayed bodies, naked breasts, vomit and a severed penis are all flung out of the screen — are an authentic, affectionate throwback to cheapo Cormanesque excess.” — Nigel Floyd, Time Out London Check out everything we’ve got on “Piranha 3D.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Ben Mendelsohn on Animal Kingdom, Crafting a Monster, and the Upside of Tension

There are bad guys, and there are bad . Guys. Veteran Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn plays the latter in Animal Kingdom , the Sundance-winning, Melbourne-set crime drama currently wowing moviegoers in limited release. Much of that reaction has focused on the quality of the film’s evil double-headed, awards-worthy hydra, with the terrific Jacki Weaver smiling and snarling on one side and Mendelsohn — as bipolar (or monopolar, really) robber ganglord Arthur “Pope” Cody — on the other. As Mendelsohn candidly and readily admits, it was not a beast you wanted to mess before or during the grueling Kingdom shoot.

John McCain is on Team Snooki

Nicole Polizzi, a.k.a. Snooki from Jersey Shore, has found an unlikely ally in U.S. Sen. John McCain. Ally for what? Nothing really. But he’s on Team Snooki! In a radio interview yesterday, the former GOP Presidential candidate offered his opinion on the July 30 disorderly conduct arrest of the MTV reality star. “I kind of think she might be too good looking to go to jail,” said McCain , seeking reelection to the Senate this year at the age of 73, on Phoenix’s KMLE. Snooki, who spent a few hours behind bars for being drunk in broad daylight before posting bail, agrees. Monday, she told MTV succinctly, and humbly: “I’m too pretty to be in jail… I’m not a criminal.” Start printing the McCain/Snooki 2012 presidential campaign signs now. She may actually be an intellectual step up from his previous choice of running mate . Amazingly, this isn’t the first McCain shout-out to the pint-sized party girl. After the Oompa Loompa lodged a complaint about proposed taxes on tanning beds in the Jersey Shore premiere, the veteran politician Tweeted in kind. McCain, or an intern who watches Jersey Shore and worked in a quality play on words, Tweeted at Ms. Polizzi: “@Sn00ki ur right, I would never tax ur tanning bed! O’s tax policy is quite The Situation. but I do rec wearing sunscreen!” EDITOR’S NOTE : In referencing this line – one of our favorite Jersey Shore quotes of the new season – we chided Snooki on the grounds that the law doesn’t take effect for years. The law has, in fact, taken effect already. We regret the error! Snook bashed President Obama for his “tax on tanning.” Obama, too, referenced her in a recent interview, although somewhat less flatteringly. He claimed he didn’t know who Snooki was during his controversial appearance on The View .

Ice-T Arrested For Driving With Suspended License

Rapper was pulled over in New York for not wearing a seat belt. By Jayson Rodriguez Ice-T (file) Photo: Scott Gries/ Getty Images Veteran rapper Ice-T was arrested and taken into custody by New York Police Department officials on Tuesday morning (July 20) after he was spotted driving without a seat belt and authorities later discovered his driver’s license was suspended. According to a spokesman for the NYPD, the rapper was arrested on 40th Street and 11th Avenue in Manhattan at approximately 9 a.m. this morning. An officer pulled over Ice-T (real name: Tracy Marrow) for a routine stop after noticing the entertainer driving without a seat belt. A check of the “Law & Order: SVU” star’s driving records showed his license was suspended. He was then taken into to custody at the 10th Precinct where he’s expected to be issued a desk ticket and return to make a court appearance at a later date, an NYPD spokesman told MTV News. A representative for the rapper was not available for comment. Earlier on Tuesday, Ice-T tweeted that he would be taking wife Coco’s dog to have surgery after the animal injured its knee two weeks ago. “Up early,” he wrote. “@cutespartacus [Coco’s dog’s Twitter handle] has to get knee surgery today. It’s a simple operation that [is] common for bulldogs. Still sucks. Wish him luck…” On Tuesday afternoon, Coco confirmed on Twitter that her husband had been arrested and released. “Yes, Ice was arrested this morning but we don’t know what the hell for! He’s been released,” she wrote. “We got pulled over for not wearing seat belts.” Related Artists Ice-T

Weezer Say New LP Will Have ‘More Raw Rock Energy’

Still-untitled album due in September. By Kyle Anderson Weezer Photo: Geffen Weezer once let five years lapse between albums (1996’s Pinkterton and 2001’s Weezer, a.k.a. The Green Album ), but lately the group has become one of the more prolific outfits in rock. Less than a year removed from 2009’s Raditude, Weezer will put out their still-untitled eighth studio LP on September 13. According to frontman Rivers Cuomo, it won’t be business as usual for the veteran band. “There’s definitely going to be more raw rock energy on this one,” he told The News-Times, a paper based out of Danbury, Connecticut, not far from where Cuomo grew up. “I’ve spent the entire morning trying to come up with a name for the record. How does Heavy Mental sound?” The new album will mark the band’s first release away from Geffen Records, which originally signed Weezer and has put out all of their previous releases. “We don’t know what format these recordings are going to come out on,” Cuomo told MTV2’s “Subterranean” last year. “Is it going to be an old-fashioned CD put out by a record label? Is it going to be something that is only online? Is it going to be a shorter album — eight songs — or is it going to be a longer album — 20 songs? We don’t know. When the time comes, we’ll see what’s behind the next door.” Weezer’s eighth album also promises to have the same collaborative spirit as Raditude, which featured contributions from Lil Wayne, Dr. Luke and the All-American Rejects. Cuomo already said he was working with Ryan Adams , and other potential contributors include Katy Perry (with whom Rivers worked on her album Teenage Dream ) and Paramore singer Hayley Williams (who joined Weezer onstage at a Florida show in January for a rendition of the classic “Say It Ain’t So”). No matter what the album ends up sounding like or how it gets out into the world, Cuomo will have plenty to write about. In the past year, he has turned 40 years old, survived a harrowing tour bus accident and ventured into the world of sleeved blankets with the “Wuggie.” Related Artists Weezer
