R.I.P. Geraldine Ferraro Dead At 75

Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to run for vice president on a major party ticket, died on Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital, a spokesman for her family said. She was 75. The cause of death was complications from multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that she had battled for 12 years, according to a statement from her family. Ferraro, the first woman and the first Italian-American to run on a major party national ticket, was Walter Mondale’s vice presidential running mate in 1984 on the Democratic Party ticket. She earned a reputation for speaking her mind on the issues of the day, sometimes generating controversy for her outspoken opinions. R.I.P. Source

Maxim Bottom Feeds with Michelle Trachtenberg of the Day

This is funny to me on a few levels. Firstly, I hate Maxim. I think the magazine is shit, itt’s struggling, they can’t get a decent bitch in a photoshoot, but more importantly, they are fucking assholes. Their vice president emails me consistently acting like a total cocksucker… So when I saw this Michelle Trachtenberg shit, a bitch who people only found hot cuz she was Buffy’s underage sister on a show that lured in the perverts, over a decade ago… So when I saw them trying to make her doughy, uninteresting ass sexy, I realized, this was one of the final nails in the coffin of a magazine you’d think was innovative, if you were an idiot frat boy with no grasp of reality…which I am pretty sure you are… So here is their promo video 10,000 people watched in the last 5 days, cuz Maxim is a sinking ship…. And now I wait for their idiot marketing executive to email me to take this down, when he should be hiring me as his replacement, cuz clearly he fucking sucks and this is all his fault. No offense to Michelle Trachtenberg, I’m sure she’s a decent person and all that shit….She’s just not meant for Maxim and is the victim in all this…

Miss Universe Body Paint Pics Stir Up Controversy

Is it possible for a beauty pageant to be too sexy? That’s the question directed at Miss Universe these days, as the organization has posed most of its 2010 contestants in almost nothing but body paint for a new set of promotional images. Miss USA, Rima Fakih , and Miss Trinidad and Tobago, LaToya Woods, show off these looks in the examples below: Some think these photos go too far. “It’s alarming that this has been turned into a Playboy-esque masquerade,” Angie Meyer, a former pageant employee, told Fox News. “By implementing topless photos as part of the pageant process, they’re putting applicants in an extremely compromising position.” As opposed to the bathing suit and evening gown segments of the event, which place contestants in uncompromising positions and are not based on appearances? Responded Lark-Marie Anton, vice president of marketing and public relations for the organization, to the charges of inappropriateness: “The contestants who compete at Miss Universe are diverse, as they represent more than 82 countries around the globe. Many of their cultures embrace nudity… We feel the images captured are fashionable and cutting edge!” The Miss Universe pageant airs on August 23. Do you think these pictures cross a line?

Playboy Offends Itself in ‘Shocking Breach’ of Standards

It must be difficult to offend a company that makes its money off pictures of naked women (to be fair, there are also articles … apparently). The folks at Playboy Portugal managed to do just that. On Wednesday, news broke that the Portuguese edition of Playboy magazine published several photographs depicting Jesus Christ observing pornographic scenes . On Thursday, the parent company, which licenses the Playboy name to international publishers, distanced itself from the controversy. “We did not see or approve the cover and pictorial in the July issue of Playboy Portugal,” Playboy’s vice president of public relations, Theresa Hennessy, reportedly told the gossip blog Gawker in an email. “It is a shocking breach of our standards, and we would not have allowed it to be published if we had seen it in advance. Hennessy told Gawker the magazine would be “terminating our agreement” with the Portuguese publisher. ( Visit Gawker for the full statement . Content warning: some readers may find Gawker’s photo offensive.) As of Friday morning, however, the Playboy website still listed Playboy Portugal among its 27 international editions.

Big Apple? More Like Big Brother

Citing the specter of terrorism, an appeals court overturned a decision that would have forced New York City to turn over documents detailing the surveillance of demonstrators, street performers and other ne’er-do-wells who may have threatened the 2004 Republican convention … and our national security, of course. New York Times: More than 1,800 people were arrested and fingerprinted during the convention, but lawyers for the civil liberties group, representing some of those arrested, were seeking the documents to see how and why arrests were made and what information the police may have had before they made the arrests. In recent years, the city has paid millions of dollars to many of those who sued after their arrests, asserting that they had been improperly taken into custody. Many were herded into pens at a West Side pier in Manhattan that was dubbed Guantánamo on the Hudson. Read more Related Entries May 31, 2010 What’s Not to Like About Civil Rights? NBA Leads Sports in Diversity

Professional sports have long had a disconnect between the players and management where diversity is concerned, so hats off to the NBA for setting an example for baseball, football and that weird boring ice game. The basketball league scores an A in both racial and gender diversity, with women sitting at 44 percent of the desks in league offices. AP via ESPN: The NBA was again the only men’s professional sports league to receive a combined “A” for race and gender in the annual report released Wednesday by the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. Women made up 44 percent of professional employees at the league offices. That increased by one percent from last year, higher than any other men’s professional league in any previous study but still below the NBA’s high of 49 percent in the 1995-96 season. There also were 34 women in vice president positions in the league office, an increase of three. And while the league received high marks for gender again, Lapchick said that might be the area the NBA can make the biggest strides. Reruns of Seinfeld Could Prevent Conan From Signing With Fox

Before Conan O’B rien starts his 30-city nationwide tour tomorrow night in Eugene, Oregon, he better plan on giving a big hello to Mark Metzger. Who’s that? Well Metzger is the general manager and vice president of Eugene’s Fox affiliate, KLSR, and he’s just one of the people that could prevent Conan from becoming a late night television fixture once again.
